An average course but better than some 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Had never played this course so we made the 50 mile trek. Pulled in the park, paid our $6 ( there are 4 parking spaces right outside the gate- if you park in one of those, you'll save the $6) and found #1 tee. Good things:
1) big concrete pads
2) decent signage with distance and pin location marked. I'd have liked to have a range finder because some tees listed distances that seemed way too optimistic. 325'? More like 290'...
3) wide open fairways and you can always see the baskets. It's nearly impossible to lose a disc here unless you fling one in the lake.
4) decent mix of holes distance wise but only two have trees that really enter into play. This course is 95 percent. So nothing technical here.
5) plays easy, not too busy, pretty lake, etc. Nice area

Cons:

Not my type of course. It's a disc golf course laid out in a huge playground/field area. At no time did you feel like you were in nature. In fact, pavement crisscrosses everywhere and I damaged a disc when an errant shot blew off truck and edge-landed on the blacktop.
2) baskets had no markings period and were tough to see. Flat grey blends in- and most were rusted pretty heavily. Discs took done wear as a result.
3) course was kind of boring for me- no real challenges to overcome. Just show up, throw and keep score. Pretty straightforward but I prefer a challenge.
4) water on a course is normally a plus but not when it will result in the loss of a disc. Personally I don't mind losing a $1-$2 golf ball in a water hazard but do mind losing a $20 disc. Never had an issue with the lake but I found myself pulling back pretty severely on shots when the water came into play. Added several strokes to an otherwise good round.
5) it's plain Jane, nothing special, nothing fabulous, no WOW factor. At 50 miles away, no reason to go back.

Other Thoughts:

For those nearby it's a nice course. Clean, pretty, has decent facilities, etc. If I lived much closer I would come back but it just wasn't worth the drive. If you are nearby, go for it. But just don't go too far out of your way. With Idlewild and Lincoln Ridge so close by go there instead.

Good open practice and novice friendly 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

I wanted to take my adult son out to play a course that would be beginner friendly. Also, I had not played disc golf for four months and needed some practice. This course was a good warm up course and except for a couple of the water holes it was not too intimidating for a novice. Some of the holes were a little long for a novice but the pars were reasonable. This also was not an "easy" course for my noodle arm either. If you are looking for a good practice course then this is an excellent choice. Finally, this course does have a lot of elevation which adds to the design and difficulty. The use of the water was well designed. I would play this course again.

Cons:

There were a few issues with the course:

1. There was no direction assistance on the course. The next tee pads were not always obvious after a hole. Since this was the first time I played this course it was difficult to navigate at times. I looked up the course map on DGCR but it was not always clear. If I had been a beginner, then the navigation would have been very discouraging. I gave the course demerits for the navigation issues.

2. The baskets should have hole numbers on them. Several of the holes crossed or the next basket for that hole was not always clear. Also, it would have helped with navigation.

3. The low areas retained substantial water and mud and it was very wet and muddy. It had been a couple days since it rained and it did not drain well.

4. Other than as a novice or practice course, this course is a bit too open and repetitive. It could be argued that the length is a negative for a true beginner.

Other Thoughts:

If the navigation issues were resolved I would likely rate this course a little higher since it was a nice open course with elevation for practice.
I am also a big proponent of some courses being novice friendly in order to grow the sport.

Played on a rainy day 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A.J. Jolly is a nice park in the Northern Kentucky area to take the entire family. This is a 18 hole course that has a wide variety of holes. There are holes that are wide open, up/down hill, dog leg left and right, wooded, and holes that are lined with water. There are a variety of distances as well per hole. The course is well maintained. The signs, tee boxes and baskets are well taken care of. The course only took a couple of hours to play.

Cons:

The times that I have played the course, even when it wasn't raining, the course is rather damp. The holes around the lake can be especially damp. I found it somewhat difficult at times to find the next hole the first time I played.

Other Thoughts:

The park takes a little while to get to when coming from the interstate. It is worth the trip if you are looking for a nice course to play.

Oh Jolly!!!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It has been a while since i have played this course however i remember this course very well. I actually like this course very much. It is an open course that you have to open your arm on. Great course to practice those long drives BUT you cant overthrow some holes. First hole is just a nice power drive about 475 feet and it goes uphill. Second hole is just a beauty that scares me. Nice over the lake shot. I have lost 2 discs in that lake on this hole. Now the next 2 holes if you overdrive the hole you will be wet and wont find your disc. Then the course goes back up the hill and you have 4 or 5 holes that are 250-300 feet. After those open holes u have 2 holes that go to the woods. The first is more open but then the basket ducks in the woods. I recomend a good forhand shot for rhbh throwers with a big turn around disc. Then you go back into the fields and have shots that range from 200 feet to another 480 footer at 18. The tee pads are awsome here and are very big.

Cons:

Not many cons for this course. A very well designed course to test your placement. Dont need a ton of accuracy as in trying to it certain holes or certail lines. I would say this course is a very good course to start testing your distance and see how far you can go. On windy days this course is very difficult. Be carefull playing in the summer this course is very dry and also the wind is normally blowing pretty good but that will make you think that you are cooler than you are. big course drink lots of water.

Other Thoughts:

Overall it is a nicely designed course. My buddy and i played this several times and have played it at night which is fun and difficult. hole 2 is awsome at night with just a little glow stick to shoot for. i did lost 2 discs here for that hole. Course should be played by beginners looking to become serious. Looking to get that power drive and test their shots. ALSO NOTE PARKING CAN BE DONE OUTSIDE THE PARK WITHOUT GOING THROUGH THE GATES. IT IS RIGHT BY THE PRACTICE GATE. Other than that have fun and enjoy about 2 hours of disc golf.

Picturesque Setting 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- You can really let it out on quite a few holes since it's wide open.
- Memorable peninsula green on hole 2. Only 200ft but the risk/reward is certainly there.
- While you can let it out you also need to have accuracy as quite a few holes play right along the lakes shores.
- You will need to throw drivers and putters/mid ranges off the tees, so it's not just all driver drives.
- Tee pads are all concrete and in fantastic shape.
- Grass is always well taken care of.
- Baskets are in good shape and catch well.
- Great place to get out and do field practice off a tee since it doesn't get a ton of play.

Cons:

- With being along a lake with ducks there can be duck crap on some of the tee pads and hole signs.
- Potential to lose discs in the lake with little chance of getting them back unless you're willing to go in after it.
- People fishing along hole 2's tee pad and next to the basket and are sometimes unwilling to move so you can throw.
- During summer months hole 10 can sometimes be unplayable due to cars and vans/suv's parked right in the fairway.
- Hole 12 can be unplayable for several weeks after very heavy rains.
- Some of the fairways hold water for awhile after rains so water proof shoes are always a plus for this course.
- Not a ton of variety to the holes or shot requirements.
- You will literally feel like you're in a fire pit during hot summer days as there is very little shade anywhere on the course.
- The wind can be very strong at times here and will be blowing somewhat almost always due to being so wide open

Other Thoughts:

- There is a parking area right next to the practice basket that doesn't require you to buy a pass.
- Many things for the whole family to do from disc golf, playgrounds, picnics, fishing, sports fields and camping.
Overall a fun beautiful lake course to play

A fun course to check out 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course plays around (and over) a really beautiful lake. Lots of variation in lengths and a little in elevation. Some very interesting shots, especially the ones close to the lake (which there are many) I play this course a couple times a week and have never seen it get overgrown. Very well taken care of.
Nice concrete tees, very nice baskets.
The signs are accurate and the course is fairly easy to navigate.
There's hardly ever anyone here, and this course really is beautiful.

Cons:

There is always people fishing around the holes, and sometimes people even sit in the baskets. You'll see a baseball field where baseball moms park their vans, we make that part of the challenge, don't hit cars or trees.
Can get mushy in some places

Other Thoughts:

There's a little shop that has a few discs for sale, mostly DX ones. You can also buy cold drinks or camp around the lake.

Lake…Big Lake 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 9, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

My first visit to AJ Jolly Park was on a 60 degree sunny day last fall, as the leaves were changing. I think I saw only one jogger, and a car parked down by the boat dock, suggesting someone was out fishing. I couldn't believe this beautiful lakeside disc golf course wasn't crawling with players, and others partaking of the fields and basketball courts. But it is located well southeast of Cincinnati, and I guess it's a considerable drive out there.
The course has large cement teepads, good baskets, and a reasonable layout. It has been well maintained every time I've been here. Except for the water (which is a huge exception) and three wooded holes, it's unlikely you'll lose any discs in the rough, because there really isn't any.
The signature holes are obviously the 200 foot over-water shot at the lakeside on #2, which can be a real gut-check when it's windy (and it often is here by the lake), the lakeside baskets on 3, 4 & 9, and the hilltop tee & wide open field on the lengthy #16.
There are many opportunities to gun your tee shots here, but only three holes where the natural woods are a factor at all. Two more involve planted but fully mature tree tunnels. The technical challenge here is definitely throwing with precision on waterside shots when the wind kicks up.

Cons:

Some of the fairways (in particular 1, 8, 16 & 18) get marshy (they seem to retain water).
#10 is a short hole that shoots back across the drive and under some low branches. It changes from a definite birdie hole to a challenging hole when the baseball moms' minivans are parked there at the bend (in the fairway) instead of in the lot.
I don't recall seeing benches at all, but the trash buckets don't usually overflow.
If you don't like playing in the wind, be sure to check a detailed hourly weather forecast before you go all the way out here.

Other Thoughts:

The area tournament schedule gets out here a couple of times a year. We played an 'Ice Bowl' here this year with 20 mph winds, and light flurries, where you didn't need to be a newbie to put one in the drink. Personally, I was happy to have a blizzard driver under 140 grams. Twice.

Dec., 2013 update, to be taken as a possible note for the future. Sometimes these plans take longer than expected, or even fall through, but Fred Salaz posted this on the Cincy club forum yesterday: "AJ Jolly is removing the disc golf course from its current location in the next few years. The Master plan calls for a marina, a stage and rv parking to go where #1, 18, 2,3 4 are. They have asked me to redesign the course in another part of the park. They will be building cabins and offices by the ball golf course, which is one area I will be looking at for the new course. They also would like a championship caliber design so that disc golfers will come to play the course then spend the night in one of their cabins. They didn't give me a time table but look for it to be all completed in about 5 years. More info later." That's all for now, but it could mean changes, even if not immediate.

Update February, 2018. All the changes here in the last five years have been negative for disc golfers, and I'm lowering my rating by a full point because of it. The park did add an amphitheater beside the 18th tee, which is cool, but they scalped the top of the hill, dragging the 6th tee to the side and never putting it back. They also yanked the 15th basket & leaned it against a tree for a year. Then they cut those trees, but reinstalled the basket. They cut more than half of the woods out on 11 & 12 (so they could see?), causing the 11th tee shot to pose a hazard for folks teeing on 12. Trees have died that defined the shots on 14 & 17. They paved more road within 12 feet of the 16th basket, and a jogging path to bring pedestrians into the fairways on 9 & 10. The worst move was when they built a kayak ramp/dock on the green of their signature hole 2 (!!!). Finally, they gated off the boat dock parking so now you pretty much have to pay ($5) at the gate to park near the disc golf course that they're not keeping up. If they want to move the course, let's do it!

Update January, 2022: Now they've completely moved the signature hole over the 'bay', and put it as a 200' uphill diagonally back after old 3. Definitely a 'minus' for the course. And they've spent big bucks on another gate to keep you from parking in those four spaces near hole one (when closed).

Don't under estimate this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

As the course description says, this is a beautiful course with rolling hills and a beautiful lake.

This is a great course to let your discs fly, but don't under estimate the winds. There are several rolling hills and a large lake that produces unpredictable winds. At times they can knock your disc down and some can carry your disc twice as far, and into the lake ;) You may not see this as a pro, but I see it as a tool to develop my skills at understanding my discs and the wind.

My wife who has a weaker throw enjoys this course because most of it is open and she doesn't have to search the weeds all day.

Cons:

After several storms, the lake will rise causing several holes to get pretty soggy. Others don't drain well and stay soggy for long periods.

The parks department holds boating races which blocks a couple holes, but it's only happened to me once, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Other Thoughts:

This is a wonderful course in the long list of courses in the Greater Cincinnati OH area. If you are in Northern Kentucky to play Idlewild and/or Lincoln Ridge, I definitely recommend a stop here.

Beautiful day, topped with a little Disc Golf... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I only played one round, one day, on this course so the extent or the review might be subpar. I'll do the best i can to paint the picture.
A.J. Jolly is a very relaxing and layed back course. The environment around the park is fun and cheerful. I have a course near my home town i would compair this course to as far as the challenge of skills. I like using that course to hone my shots and practice my game. A.J. is a great course for just this reason. It is not overly difficult, nor is it a push over. The course will test you at points. Now, having said that, i urge more experianced players to try different shots and discs around the course. Some holes will set you up for some pretty tough shots here and there. I would use this course as a great practice field. Here are a few holes i felt the need to mention.
#2... What a great design for a hole. It is kinda short, but if your not confident of the tee, your disc will be better served as a frog boat. (see photos)
#14... Very fun hole. On a wide open field with two rows of HUGE trees giving you a nice tunnel shot. It also makes for some great shade on a hot day!
#16...Summed up in one notorious phrase..."GRIP IT AND RIP IT!" Huge distance on the hole. Right off the slightly elevated tee box, your bombing into an open field.

Cons:

Since i played here once, my Cons might be a little...for lack of a better term... lame. The Cons i can remember are few. One, It was a long drive to get to the course, and i was really expecting a more challenging course. Two, be sure to pick up a map at the front kiosk. There are no "Next Tee" signs. It could get confusing navigating the park at times. The only really BIG Con i think should be said is just difficulty level. Its a beautiful park, with a average grade course.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to bring friends to who are beginners. The distance is subdued by open fairways, and short holes are stretegically made. You will have a blast just having FUN out here. Don't get pumped, or psyched for a tough course. You will leave dissappointed. Play here to have a great afternoon, and leave feeling even better!

Great Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 2, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I live in eastern Cincinnati by the Woodland Mound course and this course is worth the drive time to me. This is a good place to learn and test out new throwing styles such as rollers and sidearms because their really isn't any penalty or people to worry about except by the lake. I also take new disc here to break them in and learn there habits. The holes by the lake on this course are beautiful!!! There are also one or two tees on the top of relatively tall rolling hill and these holes are a blast to play as well. Hole #2 is the best one on the course and one of the most memorable in the Cincinnati area (if only because of the lake)!!!

Cons:

Many of the middle holes are too wide open or uniquely memorable. Not enough holes have strategically placed risk/reward obstacles (e.g. trees) to create a "pros" challenge but the holes by the lake are great. You can always count on the wind being here since its next to a lake.

Other Thoughts:

I think the wind is the best part of this course after multiple visits, because it can really affect your hole strategy. It also occasionally gives you the best long distance drives that will just seemingly flutter up and down forever. Try throwing hole #2 over the lake with a high arcing rhbh and a stable disc for a great adrenaline rush, while you pray that your frisbee stays true in the air and doesn't roll on the landing. Also, bring a fishing pole and a pale of beer and you'll have yourself a great vacation day!

A.J. Jolly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great elevation changes, a few up hill shots that are pretty challenging. Decent use of lake as water hazards on a handful of front 9 holes. These holes force you to play it safe and force your accuracy. Concrete tee pads nice tee signs that are very helpful as far as lay out of the hole. The baskets are fairly new and I have never seen them vandalized. A few long holes and a few short with a good variety in between that. Mostly open with a few holes with tight fairways either from thick trees and brush or from lines of giant oak trees or pines. There is never a problem with brush or over growth, and grass is never too long. There is a practice basket right by the parking lot and the first tee. Course is never very busy or over crowded. I don't think I have ever had to wait on a hole or if I have it wasn't very long. This is probably because it is in the middle of no where.

Cons:

Biggest con is the low laying areas. Since a lot of the course plays through the lakes flood plans. There are a few spots on the course that just always seem to be wet and nasty no matter how long ago it rained.

Other Thoughts:

There are sometimes people fishing along the lake by holes which can be a pain.

Scenic Course, Room for Improvement 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Natural Beauty- This course plays around one of the prettiest lakes in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Playability- On the day I went out, next to no one was in the park. Though there was still a bit of mud on the course, the rains were torrential the day before and I can't fault the maintenance.

Facilities- A lot of work was put into making this course worthwile. The tee pads were all concrete, and the signs are clean and very helpful. Refreshments were sold at the gate. The permanent bathrooms were for the most part clean.

Cons:

Course Design- Something tells me that they put the course in the wrong part of the park. Despite the beautiful rolling hills you see all around you, much of the layout centers around the baseball fields. In addition, many of the holes are monochrome, with only one strong element per hole. For example, while #16 has an excellent elevated tee exposed to the wind, the rest of the nearly 500 yard hole is wide open, treeless, and flat.

Course Flow- The best holes unfortunately hit too hard, too fast, and too early in the round. Hole #2 is easily a standout, with both tee and green on points jutting out into the water. While the hole itself is excellent, it often gobbles up discs more than generates excitement. Nearly every hole with significant risk/reward is done by hole 9, and the vast majority of the back nine mostly plays over open fields and contrived tree chutes.

Other Thoughts:

The potential for an amazing course is here, but unfortunately wasn't fully realized. If this course were to be completely redesigned (and placed, say, on that gorgeous land on the other side of the lake), we would have a rival for Lincoln Ridge and Idlewild.

Also, coming from Cincinnati, beware that it's a much longer drive than you might expect to get out here. You'll feel like you've passed out of civilization before you catch the turn in.

Most Scenic Disc Golf in Cincinnati Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A simple eighteen hole course that can range in difficulty between casual day of fun to an absolute monster when the wind comes into play. One day you're throwing understable discs, the next overstable. It's definitely more of an intermediate level course and harder when winds get into the 40+mph range. As far as the technical aspects, you'll encounter a variety of :
• distances - up to around 600ft or so
• low ceilings
• left & right doglegs
• elevation changes
• water in play on ~6 holes

Cons:

• Really is a pretty boring course in terms of difficulty. The difficulty level increases only because of the wind.
• Most holes are ace runs but do also have low ceilings and water hazards to help keep things from getting too stale.
• It is far away from the Cincinnati Big 3 (Idlewild/Banklick/ Mt. Airy).

Other Thoughts:

I really like playing this course more for the scenery than the challenge. Don't miss it if you play in Cincinnati in the fall and love the changing of the leaves. It's like a treat to get to make the drive out there. The redesign has improved flow and only made the course better. I can get in three or four rounds in a day there and make it worth the drive. It's really not very difficult, but it's a fun time. I have sacrificed a lot of cherished discs there to the drink, so if you play, be careful and bring your overstable plastic if there's wind. Also, watch out for snakes on the banks.

Open and pretty course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is very nicely kept, and has lots of great views of the lake. The entire course plays on very nice grass that was mowed fairly recently when we played. The tee signs are very nice (they seemed new), and had accurate depictions of the holes along with distance. The tee pads were all concrete, and were in fine shape.

The water is a fun hazard, and was used well on a few holes. Many holes play along or toward the lake shore, making for tough decisions on the tee. One hole plays across a small inlet of the lake, and seemed well designed to allow risk reward decisions between going for the birdie or laying up safely around the water.

The course is on gentle rolling hills for the most part, and the design takes advantage of the small elevation changes as much as possible. The trees that were on the course were also used well. It was fun at the end of the course to have a few holes to really open up on, with a few 450'+ holes in a row.

Cons:

This course for the most part is wide open. Only one hole could be considered a 'woods' hole, and only a few had more than a couple scattered trees on the fairway. This meant that the holes got repetitive, as the majority were straight shots between 300' and 340'.

On holes 2 and 3, there were a number of people sitting (and parking their cars) on the fairways. They seemed not to realize that the space was also used for disc golf, though none had a major issue with us playing through.

Other Thoughts:

We enjoyed playing this course, though I wouldn't recommend driving way out of your way just to play here. The park was very pretty, and this would be a great place to bring a family to play, or new players who aren't ready for the more challenging and technical courses in the area.

Pros:

Fun course that really lets you air out your discs on some big throws. #2 is a great hole that throws over water and so is always a scary throw, but the normal fade of a RHBH will bring your disc towards the land and there is plenty of safe landing area if you don't want to risk losing a disc at the penalty of not having much chance of a 2. The new #12 (which is a combination of the old 12 and 13) is probably my favorite hole on the course: a long, tough, tightly wooded hole. Overall the hole layouts are well planned make use of the terrain and force a decent shot variety. The water and hills make it a very picturesque course to play, especially at sunset. The new #6 is a fun downhill shot that takes the place of the unofficial "dumpster hole."

Along with the new hole and 12/13 merge, the tee signs have been replaced and provide length, par, and hole diagram information. The course is well maintained and kept clean.

I'm listing several negatives below, but despite the cons this is my favorite course in NKY behind Lincoln Ridge (Banklick) and Idlewild.

Cons:

If your game is a bit off the water that is along many of the holes on the first half of the course can be frustrating. In fact, most of the challenge offered by the course unfortunately comes from fear of losing a disc in the water not from clever risk/reward design.

Several holes are just long throws into a field (16 and 18 being the worst) that are tough to get a par unless you've got a big arm.

I did mention there is plenty of shot variety, but the problem it is only of slight degrees. Most holes are fairly straight with almost no holes with significant doglegs, making this mostly a course to practice your drives on.

Other Thoughts:

Several of the holes seem to be in permanent swamp mode, even when there hasn't been a rain for some time. There are often fisherman on the lake on 2 and 3 (there's a small beach on the shore) that seem oblivious to the fact that they are standing on (and have sometimes parked their car on) the course.

AJ Jolly is a fairly large park with a golf course, sports fields, fishing, picnic shelters, and other fun things to do.
