Awesome Edition to Adams Lake 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Perfect Beginner Course. Even though I'm not 100% on the layout since just the baskets are out, I can tell this is the perfect intro course for Adams County. With the next closest course being Black Bear I believe a beginner course is awesome.
-Well Maintained. The whole course has been very well maintained both times I went. No areas where you could lose a disc really. Minor trimming could be done once the tee spots are established.
-Great Scenery. Wonderful setting for a disc golf course running beside the lake and in the gentle rolling hills with the cedars.

Cons:

-Not Finished Yet. Obviously the biggest con and reason for the 2/5. Of course it still needs some tee areas (natural would be just fine) and mainly needs some tee signs so people know the intended tee spots and pars and such. I hope that they get some high quality long lasting signs. If the work horses/designers of the course read this I'd love to donate some to get some of the tee signs in so please reach out!
-Not a Lot of Challenge For Advanced Players. The flip side of the course's big pro is that advance players might not have as big a challenge. But maybe if there is some pro pads drawn up it could definitely add some challenge especially for the good gals and guys to go after that elusive "perfect" 9 hole round perhaps. So still has the potential to be super fun for experienced players, but I would definitely focus on just getting the normal tee pads and signs out first and get that beginner and new player audience going.
-Watch for Pedestrians. Overall the course is out of everyone's way but as with all park courses especially close to walking paths just have to be respectful of park goers.

Other Thoughts:

I'm so glad someone decided to put a little 9 hole course here. It has a lot of potential and the bones are perfect. I love how it loops so well. Can't wait to see the finished product in a few years hopefully. And once again if the creators of the course see this I'd be happy to donate some tee sign money if I can! I grew up just probably 5 miles from Adams Lake and would love to give back to getting the State Park improved.

I also like how you all are waiting to put the tee signs in so you can get the perfect spot for all of them before committing. Great idea. Next time I'm in the area I'll use the map and U Disc to see what they're thinking and update this review and the wall with any suggestions I might have as someone who's only been playing for little over 3 years.

Pretty Potential 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

As the first disc golf course to go in to Adams County, Ohio, the designers want to get people playing and finalize the layout as they do, so they started with the installation of 9 good, sturdy DGA baskets with number plates on top, and a general map for course flow. As is, the park is well maintained, and there is a TON of potential for safe, fun, challenging lines of flight as you play the loop. Mature pines and other native park trees will give numerous opportunities to decide which gaps they intend their target audience(s) to hit, and there's room on nearly every hole to have at least two (and often three) levels of challenge.

Played according to the map uploaded here, the course starts out with an open, short par 2 (!) left of the road, where even noob hyzers will play safe., then you cross the road and work clockwise between the road and the lakeside path for the next seven holes. They've placed the baskets well away from playgrounds, shelters and picnic tables, so kudos for that much planning. The final hole is actually pretty neat, even for beginners, as it obviously intends to throw over a small section of the lake (yay!), then over the path (boo), and uphill to a basket about 220' away. It would be difficult for beginners to throw one in the water here, and they can always go around to the right if they can't clear the far edge of the water less than 75' off the tee.

The 8th basket and the entire 9th hole are situated lakeside with some really pretty views. In all, the course has lots of possibilities for beginners through recreational divisions, and could even provide some challenges for intermediates to learn shot shaping and control.

Cons:

The obvious first need here is at least some indication of the intended places from which to tee off. Then 'next tee signage (see below). The intent would obviously be to determine the best shots before installing permanent tees, but something is needed to help people begin playing. There really isn't a space here for the big arms to show off (and that's OK with me: I love 150'-300' comet lines through park trees with no underbrush!).

Other Thoughts:

I understand the designers are looking for feedback. Well, here goes: I envision this course as having potential for red, white and possibly blue tees, but I would start with red. All holes would be in the range of 120' to 250', with the cleanest lines I could find that angle out from the 'center' of the park. An intermediate player could obviously play this layout as a 'birdie bash', but beginners will have fun carding an occasional three or two.

Once those have been marked (even with mulch tees or toeboards and basic signage), it'll be time for a little more challenge. Drop back 50' to 100' on average (probably more in 'parallel' with the course loop), and find a moderate difficulty line for rec to intermediates. Establish those lines as white tees. THEN the guys who really want to step it up can begin creatively looking for the most technicality (keeping it safe), and have some (maybe not all?) blue tees.

I look forward to seeing what they do with this, and revising this review upward!

Potentially a great beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a brand new course near West Union, Ohio. This review is taking in the fact that: teepads are coming, a kiosk will likely go in at some point, and there will be some basic trimming in the near future.

The course plays along mildly rolling hills nestled between a park road and beautiful small lake.

Most of the holes are short and slightly technical. Potential for some roll always.

My favorite hole was #4. Nice low ceiling shot with potential for OB road.

Cons:

The cons are mostly in the fact that the course is new. If you arent accustomed to natural tees, or like searching for the tee ares.... you wont like this yet.

The parks department didnt seem to understand that the baskets might need moved at some point. The lock tab was buried on every basket. One of the baskets had the number plate facing the wrong direction.

Hole 1 was very short. I noticed afterward that it is a par 2, which makes more sense now.

Hopefully the course will become 18 holes later. I wish the beautiful lake could have been used more, but given the beginner nature of the course, newbs probably dont want to swim for their disc.

Other Thoughts:

This is going to be a good beginner course to introduce more people to disc golf in the area. Hopefully this will trickle down to more players in the area, and more people playing towards Portsmouth for us.

Cant wait to see how this course grows! Good job guys!
