Pros:
Even though this course is just off of a main intersection of town , it wasn't easy to find. Drive behind the gas station near Rochester and Milwaukee on a small service road . Someone decided to throw some serious money at Akron Community Disc Golf Course .
Equipment : The course has nice cement tee pads . If the course wasn't so short , the width and length might have been in my cons . The signage was adequate , with par ,distance and hole # . The baskets are Yellow banded Discatchers . There are also very nice metal green benches at every hole . Bathroom is near hole #1's basket .
Landscape : The course was mowed and looked well taken care of . . The elevation here is pretty mild , Some grades here and there , with a small hill to either shoot into or off of near hole 7 -10 ? There is a big top of the world shot off of what looks to be a man made hill at #12 . This course is pretty much park style , but there are a couple of semi-wooded holes that change things up .
Highlights : The course has no holes here to take your breath away , but many are fun . #4 is a nice short tunnel shot that moves slightly uphill . #6 is a short tight drive up a grade #13 ( or 17 ) , I think , is a top of the world shot .off a man made hill .
Disc Risk . Low . Not much in the way of heavy rough and no water . Since it can be open and windy here , the only way to really lose one is to throw it way up in a tree .
Time : It took me a little over 45 minutes to play this course , so figure a foursome taking about an hour and a half
Cons:
Safety : There are walkers and dog owners that mill around this park . Be patient and cognizant of those around you .
#2 Challenge . Some of these holes are almost straight and open fairway shots , maybe with an embankment that the basket sits on , or with a tree in the way . What may seem like a fun play to many will be way too easy for intermediates or pros . There are only 2 holes longer than 291' , that being 315' and 317' . Midrange and putter territory for the rest .
#3 Navigation . First , going from 2-3 will be hard . It is a hard right and a little backwards up the hill to find it . Also , there will be spots where you are standing that you see maybe 6 different tees and 6 different baskets . Some Next Tee signs would help . An online course map and map at a kiosk would be great.
Other Thoughts:
They jammed 18 holes into this park , and guess what ? It works . What is short on length is made up in fun . Some open , some holes a little tighter , but all playable . The Akron Park Board designed and supported this course and they did a good job .
With the benches here , you can take your time going from hole to hole , or blow through it in the time it takes you to order and eat a fast food lunch . I think you will like the park here .
My Recommendation : This is the course that every newbie should start on , and all families should play . Easy on the exertion , little chance of losing your only disc , and won't take all night to play . Also great for the locals to play and hang out with friends , a perfect social gathering ( maybe add a shelter ? ) Good for the travelers to leg stretch and the Course Collector ( combine with the Boonies and Rochester ) . Just a goof around course for the intermediates and pros , but who doesn't like goofing around ? I am not going to coerce you to play it , but I think you should give this course a try .
