A magical adventure and must play for any disc golfer!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 18, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetics/vibe:

This is where this course is pretty much unmatched. The only other course that even comes close in this regard is Bucksnort in Colorado. The amazing desert landscape with these beautiful, vertical, red rock spires is unlike anything these eyes have ever seen. Coupled with the gorgeous Colorado River as a backdrop to the property and course combined with absolute quiet and solitude makes this place special. Wild life is abundant here as well, saw lots of lizards, chipmunks, all sorts of birds, insects. Did not see any rattlesnakes or cougars (mountain lion) fortunately. Although the course itself is wild and fun there is so much more to this special area than just a disc golf course.

Amenities of the property:

Tom (the owner) has several options if you're planning on staying a few nights. The hogans are primitive shelters made out of straw and mud and whatever is around when building, I didn't stay in one but looked at them up close and they look like fun, even fire pits are nearby for some true hippie guitar fun, drinking or any other substances that would be a blast to enjoy out here. You can rent ATV's here for much cheaper than in Moab and there are off road trails starting pretty much where his property ends. Fishing, hiking, canoe or kayak fun, even a sandy beach at the river. For an off the grid adventure you can't beat this place.

Course overview:

First up you should go and find Tom who is either inside or outside on the porch and meet up with him. He will give you a map that shows you both the blue and red tees and has hole information and comments/tips on those holes on the back of the map. A side note; even though there is no cell service for whatever reason Udisc was still working for me so I used that most of the time. Hole 1 starts behind Tom's place toward the river. Holes 1-3 throw around the cabin until hole 4 and this is your last chance for water (which is provided by Tom) or snacks or whatever you need from the car. This is where the course starts to get really fun!

You're throwing uphill by this point with baskets near all of the boulder fields and going long or left has your disc falling off a cliff basically. You play around the hogans and start making your way downhill again. Many awesome holes in this section have you throwing a top of the world shot to a basket tucked in to boulder fields and dirt mounds with trees and bushes blocking your way. After the long par 4 you play up the rocky side of a cliff face and this is where your discs get really banged up and you feel like this is what playing disc golf on the moon feels like only with gravity. You get another big downhill throw off the top of this section to a basket in front of a large flat rock face that you eventually make your way down to. The last couple of holes play mostly flat back towards to cabin and your car.

Cons:

Let's talk about the drive in. While it is a stunning drive, it is also freaky if you're afraid of heights even a little. You start out from town and see a bunch of people camping out by the side of the road and then nothing but silt/dirt until you start going uphill. Now when I did it the county recently graded it so it was pretty smooth and I didn't have to cross any creeks. If you're doing this early in the season you may have to get a little wet. When you start heading uphill towards Hurrah Pass the road gets rocky, I mean BIG rocks that you have to avoid. The road snakes uphill, is very narrow, and one mistake and you are falling to your death. We call these shelf roads because if you fall off the shelf you're a goner. You'll notice the closer and closer you get to Base Camp the worse the road gets. After Hurrah Pass you think you've accomplished something but there are still rough times ahead all the way down until you hit Base Camp. We made it in a Subaru Outback, my dad driving who used to do off road rally in the 70's and 80's. While he was concentrating, he was also smiling while I was half smiling and half pissing my pants. Having all wheel drive was helpful for sure and there were spots where if we didn't have it we might have gotten stuck. If you have confidence in your driving skill and have an AWD vehicle you can make it no worries as long as you go slow and pick your spots in the road. 17 miles took us 90 minutes.

Other Thoughts:

Make sure to check out his pet tortoise Kobae. Not sure how old this big guy is but he still moves really well and was expecting us to feed him I think. Take some carrots or something with you to feed this guy, way to cute not to.

Moab is a beautiful city and of course there are other activities around town. Canyonlands, arches, among other national parks are just outside of town. I recommend a good week minimum between Base Camp and Moab to do all of the fun things around there.

Overall this is one of the best experiences of my life disc golf or otherwise. This is the definition of a destination course. A truly epic adventure that no disc golfer should miss out on. I can't say enough about Tom and his hospitality. Go play it, make plans right now, purchase your ticket or load up the cart just GET OUT HERE!

Base Camp Adventure Lodge DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

My Three Pros:

-The word 'Adventure' in the course name is no understatement. The drive, course and surroundings are so epic that the adventure begins on your drive out of Moab and doesnt end until you reach pavement again. It goes without saying the #1 'pro' for the course is its beautifully epic location that requires an adventure just to get there. The course itself requires a substantial hike through rocky sandy terrain, up and over cliffs and boulders and alongside the the Colorado River directly across from Canyonlands National park. The number of signature holes keep the round exciting throughout to make for an equally epic round of golf.

- The baskets were surprisingly nice For some reason I expected portable or even homemade baskets but these are very nice Innova Baskets all permanently mounted. In addition all tees were well marked and Tom had maps available that made navigation pretty easy.

-The signature holes of the course were some of the best I've played anywhere due to the combined elevation, scenery and basket placements. #5 is easily my favorite and one of the most fun holes I've played, throwing across the canyon to basket protected by boulders, all right next to the river below. The string of holes up in the rocky hill have such dramatic elevation in play with precarious baskets placed on slopey slickrock just waiting to send your disc rolling.

Cons:

My Three Cons:

-The adventure is a double edged sword.... I made the trek to moab in 2019 very intent on spending a day at the base camp only to be turned around by the required creek crossing below the drive up the pass. We figured our jeep cherokee could make it up the pass but the creek was deep enough to change our minds. Many reviewers mention the crazy drive up and over hurrah pass but it is well worth mentioning that if you come in spring you may have to cross a 16"+ creek before you have the chance to try the crazy hurrah pass. Definitely check the weather for rain the days BEFORE you plan to arrive to guestimate what you may have to drive through. I came back this time with a much higher vehicle and drove right through no problem. Needless to say this place is remote and you will be without signal or access to food/supplies until you get back to Moab.

-Teepads leave very much to be desired as they are mostly all strips of turf laid on the ground and marked by small blue or red PVC stakes. On the rock holes you throw from a marked area on the rock itself. It is obviously a major effort to try to haul the water and material up here to pour teepads but the natural pads are the glaring flaw on an otherwise incredible course. Luckily there are long and short teepads for most holes. The natural tee's and lacking teesigns are what take this course from a 4.5 to a 4.

-Although most holes here are good or great, there are a few filler holes that could be tweaked or replaced. #2,3,4 come to mind as those that could be replaced and some of the longer holes need some work or to be split up. My issue with #2,3,4 are their close proximity to the lodge in a scrubby area just make for a not so pretty slog through the sand hoping a disc doesnt find its way under s bush. The longer holes always irk me at sandy locations as I find it hard to throw it nearly as far with sandy footing. Then again I'm not very good.

Other Thoughts:

I had high hopes to play this course since seeing it in 'the most epic courses' thread years ago. After being turned away by the creek in 2019 it was a dream come true to finally make it out and play the course. The course did not disappoint in fun and beauty; and the stars aligned such that I played a fantastic -7 round with girlfriend in tow.
We were lucky enough to camp in one of the 5$ hogans and had a great time. The lower of the two hogans is directly next to the #6 teepad and the #4 basket is about 100' away to throw at while sitting at camp. Definitely try to stay at the lodge or hogans if you have the chance, but be sure to call ahead as the place fills up regularly nowadays.
Also nearby are plenty more 4x4 trails out around chicken corners, or hiking trails around Jackson hole, or mountain biking on the nearby captain ahab trail, or paddling on the colorado river- all epic adventures of their own.
Tom was a very nice host and we were able to even see Kobe, the giant tortoise, come out to get some sun on the lodge porch.
I cant recommend this place highly enough.
Play This Course.

If this course isn't on your bucket list, add it. If it is on your bucket list, play it and get it off that list! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pros: Incredible views and vistas. Surreal holes across the red rock that feel like you're playing on Mars. Great hosts, great fellow golfers (Anyone who puts in the time to get to this course loves the game.).

Cons:

Cons: Takes commitment to get there. Terrain is really tough on your plastic.

Other Thoughts:

Base Camp is a course unlike any other I've played. For the unique experience and outstanding views and holes, I have to give it a 5. To be perfectly honest, it has some holes with funky tees, and a couple of the baskets are super low (due to infill from floods that raised the desert floor a few feet)....but those factors were inconsequential to me when balanced against the setting. It's like playing on another planet. Just amazing.

Holes 12-15 on the original course (there are 2 courses) was one of the best stretches of golf I've ever seen.

Now, about that road? Yes, it's hard. No, it's not impossible. You do want good clearance. And you want to pick your driving lines carefully on a couple of spots where the hard stone surface creates ledges/steps that you drive up or down. I got out of my car a half dozen times to assess the drop-offs and pick the right line so I wouldn't bottom out my car. I even placed rocks at one point to create an extra step to go down so I wouldn't bottom out. But it's doable and so worth it. I strongly recommend an over night stay, or more. Going in and out just to play one day would be a lot of work unless you live in Moab. We stayed 4 nights and would have been glad to stay more except I ran out of beer and ice. Tom and Linda are amazing hosts.

Red Rock Bliss 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 12, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a destination DGC. The large red rocks that this course plays in, on, and around are so epic, and jaw dropping that you will wear out your camera taking pix. The views of the Colorado river are also spectacular. The DG is very challenging, and also done in a way that works well with the environment.

Cons:

The signage could use some work. Prepare to be HOT in the summer. Can be a little hard to follow the first time around. Many of the baskets are blind, and somewhat hard to find. Can be dangerous if you don't keep your sh*t together, and head on a swivel.

Other Thoughts:

We stayed in one of the hogan's and had a blast doing it. I highly recommend staying at the basecamp, it is an awesome place to wake up at, and explore. They have quads to rent, kayaks for free (if you stay there), and many fun hikes very close to home. Tom is a very nice host who will bend over backwards to make your stay enjoyable, and safe.

Best Course I Have Ever Played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Unbelievable terrain, epic holes, best course I have ever played. Way more fun than Beaver Ranch for example, and Beaver Ranch is an awesome course

Cons:

Heat mid summer (go spring or fall), no concrete tees, bad place for people allergic to huge turtles.

Other Thoughts:

The course is 40 minutes or so from the town of Moab on a dirt road. The first 20 minutes or so is on an easy dirt road that any car could make it up.The second half goes up and down Hurrah pass. The conditions on this part of the road change quickly. Right after it is graded which happens infrequently, almost any car could make it up, but as it rains and erodes it gets harder and harder to travel. If you have a low clearance car AND you know how to drive well on rough roads (if you don't know how to drive on rough dirt roads, why would you try getting back there in the first place!) you can probably make it there without too much issue, but check with the owner first to get his assessment of the road conditions. He's a great guy and will give you honest advice. Any SUV type vehicle with decent clearance (ie a RAV4) should be able to get there with no trouble at all.

The most unique course I've played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Amazing scenery and landscape. Extremely exclusive land for the course. Friendly owner. One-of-a-kind experience.

Cons:

Confusing course layout and flow. No tee signs and a terrible map (but at least eyes a map!). Exceptionally difficult to get there. Old baskets. No tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

The truth is that this course gets most of its score for the unique location alone. Playing among the alien Utah landscape feels like a disc golf course in one of the local and spectacular parks like Arches.

The course itself isn't anything special. The layout can be very confusing, the baskets are old and worn-out, and there are no tee signs or tee pads. The landscape allows for the placement of some epic holes, and there are quite a few of them on this course. However, that also makes it very easy to lose track of discs and there is some seriously nasty underbrush for some of the roughs. There are also some uninspired filler holes.

But the epic holes are so epic they overshadow a lot of the cons. And the sheer uniqueness of the course scores it higher. But there are a lot of cons that the overall experience and the landscape itself overcompensates for. A little care and attention could make this a truly spectacular course.

I do have to point out that we called to ask about bringing a Honda Element out to the course and were told it would be no problem. That was a dangerously misguided response from the course owner. The road to get there from Moab becomes extremely rough and a vehicle with clearance is definitely needed. I'm not sure a 2WD vehicle would be advisable, but it might be possible.

The downhill part of the road was even more gnarly than uphill to Hurrah's Pass. In fact, we drove up to the Pass in the Element and turned back around. We then rode bikes to the course the next day. The owner kindly drove us back to the Pass after our round. I'm not sure we would have made it on bike, especially after an exhausting round in 110°+ heat. In hindsight, the suggestion here to go by bike probably meant motorbike!

You will definitely want a capable vehicle with clearance as well as the nerves to drive some rough mountain roads both up and down. If the owner tells you, as he did us, that a minivan could make it, do not listen to him. I felt it very irresponsible for him to suggest that. The desert is no joke and the route to the course could be dangerous for the unprepared.

Even the experienced owner in his pickup truck was struggling on some parts of the road and I wasn't even sure if his truck was going to make it. There's no way a sedan or anything with low clearance is going to make it up to Hurrah's Pass from the course, even if you somehow made it there to begin with.

At any rate, it's without a doubt the most unique and memorable course I've ever played. It wasn't the best course I've ever played, but it stands alone. 5/5 for the setting, experience and uniqueness. 3/5 for the course design, layout and flow.

Favorite Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

I give this course a 5/5. There are more "epic holes" on this one course than the total of all the other courses I've ever played. The scenery and all of the challenges that come along with it makes it completely unique and extreme. All baskets, tee pads, signs and markers are in excellent shape and are easily visible. The course map represents the course well and is full of helpful notes. Some gems include, "Two rattlesnakes live between holes 8 & 9. Do not kill. Call on the walkie and we will come catch them or leave them alone." and "Bighorn sheep like to hang around this basket. If male (horns) use caution." The course has great flow and loops back around to the lodge. Despite the wild landscape, the course is very well-maintained. Obviously not a busy course, which is part of it's rustic charm. Restrooms, water and shade at the lodge.

Cons:

The condition of the road is certainly downplayed. The website provides excellent directions but the road, itself, is truly considered an off-roading experience. I took my small rear wheel drive SUV and put it through the most challenging conditions it has ever seen getting to this course. Not necessarily a con, per se, but your car is not going to make it. You will need a least a small SUV for the clearance, alone. It is also very technical driving- you will need to cautiously choose where you are putting your tires with sheer drops off the side. Kings Canyon road is NOTHING compared to Hurrah Pass and Hurrah Pass is NOTHING compared to Chicken Corners, so basically the road gets more challenging as you go along. Just be warned. I personally enjoyed the challenge but it would not be for everybody.

Other Thoughts:

Kobae the security tortoise and Tom, the owner were awesome. Great vibes at this place. Also, plan enough time to play the course twice. It will be worth it and you will want to feel like the drive was worth it other than for the incredible views.

Incredible Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is an incredible course located in outskirts of Moab, one of the best places on earth for us outdoor lovers.

Every hole has clearly marked tee pad with distances and directions to where the basket is if it's a blind shot. You are given a map which is extremely helpful in navigating the course as well.

Tom, the owner, took the time to walk us through what to expect and lent us a walkie talkie in case there were any problems.

You have a great variety of throws here, though most of them are long. The best though is that you get throws here that I've never seen on another course, like throwing next to or over a cliff!

Cons:

This course is extremely hard on discs. You are throwing onto sandstone rocks on many holes which can eat your disc alive, so be sure to bring ones you are ok with dinging up a bit.

Some of the baskets are about a foot off the ground due to flooding and such. It's not a huge con, obviously, but it is a little odd.

Other Thoughts:

I wondered why this course was rated so high, and now I see. It is absolutely beautiful and tough as hell! A great course for sure!

This course is in the desert! It is hot and dry and very secluded. Tom does his best to make sure everyone has access to fresh water and knows the risks of the course though. It's rocky and covers a lot of ground, so good shoes/boots will go a long way.

We didn't have 4-wheel drive going out there and kinda got stuck once. It took us a few min to get our 2WD explorer out of the sand, but after that it was pretty good. 4WD is certainly preferable but not absolutely needed.

Bring some lettuce or cucumbers to feed the giant turtle at the lodge!

Cons:

No civilization nearby, its not really a con. It just is. So be prepared with all your gear. One step teepads arent really a con either, but just maybe work on your one step drives before you head out there.

Other Thoughts:

Take plenty of pictures, it is the most amazing Wile E. Coyote terrain. Wear gators and good hiking boots. Ask where the road meets the course out by hole 9 and drive back and drop off extra drinks to refuel before starting your round.

Base Camp - Ahhhh 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Holes 5,6,13,14 are on my "dream 18" disc golf holes of all time. Really cool shots combined with unbelievable views and backdrops.
-The area around the course is pure unspoiled nature at it's most raw and beautiful. Overall conditions will vary WIDELY depending on when you play.
-This course is an 'overall experience' that is just amazing. If you ever find yourself fortunate enough to be playing this course, consider yourself very lucky. The experience is getting there, hanging out at the lodge, watching the huge tortoise and staying the night if you have the time. And if you are at this course then you should make the time. We stayed in a hogan for $5 a night. It's a freaking mud hut! And it was very cool.
-I enjoyed the hiking/bouldering around very much and I consider it a pro to the course.

Cons:

-Teepads - the rock and grass were fine with me, but the sand was difficult to throw from.
-I thought there were a few too many long par 3s and would have liked to see some of the holes lengthened or shortened for either a bigger challenge or a more fun ace run.
-The first four holes that play around the lodge are wide open and not very memorable.

Other Thoughts:

-Westin from Provo: PM me on here if you read this, thanks for waking up early, it was a fun round.
-Tom the owner is a really cool dude. Please respect his private property if you ever get out to play this course. Make sure you are prepared to be totally self sufficient.
-The Diamond-X course by itself IS more extreme.

A few thoughts on the drive to Base Camp:
Oh. My. God. So we had a rental Nissan Xterra and it was OK navigating the mountain road up to Hurrah Pass. Do not try this without a 4x4 vehicle. This is a road that was originally put in by the uranium miners back in the 50s. Now it is used by jeepers and mountain bikers seeking thrills with exposed rock ledges. Take the river shuttle from Moab if you don't have a capable car!

A very special place in the desert. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 29, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is everything you would expect a desert course to be like. Hills, rocks, cacti, and sand fill the landscape of what may be one of the coolest courses I will ever play. I love how secluded the course is from the city. You even have a few overnight staying options. The course plays openly around the lodge for the first four holes with great views of the Colorado River, then you begin the journey over rocks, canyons, desert hills, and washed out drainages. The beautiful red sandstone plays on many holes. The tees are a mix of astroturf, slickrock, and dirt, which aren't all perfect, but they are sufficient enough for a good blast. Most holes have both amateur and pro pads. Each hole is unique with a name and has vertical and horizontal distances on a sheet provided by the owner. The property owner is very friendly and will help you with any questions you may have. You even get a walkie talkie to carry for the round.

Cons:

This course, being very secluded, requires a decent vehicle to get to it. I've heard 2WD cars with good ground clearance can make it, but I wouldn't risk it. Bikes and atvs would make a fun journey to the course as well. Bring water and food because it is the desert, and far from any stores! The lodge has water to fill you up before you start playing away from it. We played before the summer heat arrived and it was perfect! I can imagine how strenuous it would be to play in 100+ weather.

Watch where your drive lands, you may have to search under rocks and in cracks between rocks. I know from experience. The rocks are also very rough on discs, if you don't want to tear up your nice plastic.

Watch for cactus. I got a splinter on my hand that delayed the round. Also be aware of snakes and scorpions as it is their territory.

Other Thoughts:

Me and a friend traveled from Colorado to play this course and now I dream of going back. It is a one of a kind course that all disc golfers should experience.

Most amazing course i've ever played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you wandered around arches national park and thought it would make a good disc golf course, then this is the course for you.
The course winds over, through, and along red sandstone canyons. It's absolutely beautiful. The holes are well organized, and even though there aren't signs, the map is easy to follow. When the holes are hidden, they all have large poles sticking out of the top. When the holes are totally blind, there are directional poles mounted on rocks.

I've thought about this course a lot in the past few weeks, and i've played a few courses since then too. I can not say enough about the absolute beauty and fun of this course. I would say that this is the one true "legendry", "must play", "destination" course that i've played. I would recommend playing this course at all costs. Make a trip out of it if you need to. Go play this course. It'll make almost everything else you play seem a little tame and normal.

Cons:

Pads are astroturf, dirt, sand, and rock. The rock is just like a concrete pad and the astroturf isn't bad, but the sand was a little annoying.
No signs. Not particularly necessary, but would have been a nice touch.
This course would be tough to play alone. There were some blind holes and blind approaches. It was very helpful to have a spotter especially since much of the terrain is bushes and shrubs, and without a spotter and an ability to remember bushes, we probably would have lost some discs. Spotting wasn't too hard though. Aside from bushes and despite some ridiculously amazing vantage points, it would've been very difficult to lose discs.

Don't let these minor complaints dissuade you though. Usually i'd knock off more than half a point for natural pads and no signs at the tees, but this course is so amazing it deserves to be played.

Other Thoughts:

Access to the course:
GET ON THE LODGE WEBSITE AND FOLLOW THEIR DIRECTIONS. The map on this site puts the first tee north of the river which it is not.

Access to the site is possible in a two wheel drive car with moderate clearance, but the car needed a push coming in and going out, and much like the course itself we needed some help spotting a safe path over the rocks. We still scrapped bottom a few times, but nothing too damaging. So it is possible to do it if you have someone else in the car, but i don't think i'd do it again. Something with more clearance than a VW passat would be highly recommended, and 4 wheel drive would be very nice.

There are other ways to the course. The lodge website gives directions for boat access, and this is how we probably should have gone.

The scenery on the way was absolutely wonderful though, and even though the last 5 miles of the drive took 30 minutes it was absolutely amazing scenery.

Canyon discing heaven 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Phenominal scenery, every hole offers a new view
-Amazing diversity of shots. No two holes take the same path
-The hike. It offers a unique experience of the canyons. Imagine a disc golf course through arches national park, and that is this course.
-Complimentary couse map and scorecard near hole 1
-The friendly owner and his African tourtoise Kobae. He saw my group walking up to the lodge from a mile or so away, and immediately after, we hear a call on a walkie talkie sitting on a water cooler, "Can I help you?" he said we could take the walkie talkie with us if we didn't know the course.
-The simple feeling of satisfaction in knowing that this course is everything I could have dreamed of in a canyon/desert disc golf course. It's ideal

Cons:

-Dirt, felt, slickrock, and often sand pads. It's easy to slip amidst the torque of a drive, I fell a few times.
-poor signs many were simply arrows on a pole.
-the HIKE. It's awesome, but challanging and exhausting to navigate this course.
-the drive. An hour on a damn near 4x4 road. a front wheel drive car with some decent clearance can do it, but it's difficult and abusive to the vehicle

Other Thoughts:

The only thing keeping me from giving this course a 5 is the lack of adequate pads/signs. It is everything you could hope for in a desert course. Bring lots and lots of water, pack a lunch. And remember, don't go left on 1 or right on 5 unless you can swim. And don't go right on 14 unless you can fly.
