Short but Sweet!

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The three courses all start at about the same place. I'm sure this makes for a really fun start for events with everybody gathered together. The campsites are neatly laid out, and I saw several stacks of wood. It just felt welcoming!

The signs are clear about which course starts where. The signs on the teepad tell you the number, and there are probably a couple of spots where you could accidentally jump from one course to another, but they're well spaced that this seems unlikely. I also enjoyed seeing all the names of the sponsors and people who had aced holes and the like. Again, it provided a very strong community feel that I enjoyed.

The baskets are *beautiful* and catch well, and it's wonderful that each course has baskets that correspond to the course color. (Red baskets on the red course, green baskets for green, blue for blue.)

Use of Elevation - Out of all 3 courses on this property, this one uses elevation change in such a fun way. While you mostly throw down hills, it doesn't mean that it makes the holes easy. With many of the holes being so, so short, having to take juice off of your putter from the teebox is a funny feeling and makes for some hilarious (terrible!) throws.

Scenery - This course plays towards and around the lake which makes for some really lovely views. The pavilion on hole 10 overlooking the lake is quite majestic.

Layout - At 24 holes, all short, the course plays as long as 18 on a "normal" course. The green course is actually listed as being slightly longer than the blue course which has several par 4s and an 800+ foot par 5!

Overall design - While not all holes are amazing, there are some really fun holes with some neat designs. It's not so hard to get within 50 feet of the basket which really separates the wheat from the chaff when it comes to putting. It can be quite tricky on several holes to park it, and you do see the occasional "that's not what I was trying to do" shots land by the basket. Super fun.

Teepads - Not all holes have concrete/brick teepads, but many do. Like the other teepads on the property, they're in great shape. Even the natural teepads are well-denoted and have benches to sit on.

The care and attention was evident everywhere. All of the paths were very obvious. The little signs on the baskets pointing you in the right direction, even when it wasn't necessary, were great. The landscaping wasn't over-the-top but added to the experience. Not even a cigarette butt on the ground. Just fantastic.

Cons:

Green Baskets - Chad, the designer, has said this himself: "Green baskets weren't the best choice." They can be hard to see in the woods. I appreciate the aesthetic, but I think if he simply put bright orange flags on top that it would solve the problem. Many courses do this, and it would completely eliminate this con for me if he did.

Some holes are just too easy - I imagine it's very difficult to make a course with 24 short holes that are all quite challenging. It's quite hard to bogey any holes on this course. When it happens it's usually because a putt clangs and rolls or because your approach hit the first tree and you're essentially throwing the same shot again. If you're going to use a "birdie bag" for this course, you might indulge on every other birdie instead of every one…

Repetitive feel - Honestly the holes are all pretty different, but 24 shorties in a row does create a kind of Groundhog's Day feel. Since you're only throwing putters and mids (roc, buzzz, wombat for me) off the teebox there aren't many choices to make. Leave your drivers in the car, you won't need them.

Can't get off the ride - All 3 courses are out-and-backs, meaning you don't get back to the parking lot until you finish hole 18 (or 24 in the case of green). With such short holes and the repetitive feel, the green course would be ideal to set up as two 12's or, man, even as three 8's. I see on uDisc there's a 9-hole option. However, if the course is busy at all you're guaranteed to be disrupting the other groups if you do that.

Natural teepads - This course has the most natural teepads on the property. I didn't count, but I'd guess it's about 7 or 8 holes out of the 24. You honestly don't need a runup on all or almost all of the holes, but it's still not ideal.

Other Thoughts:

I typically don't like to review a course until I've played it at least a few times, but with only 6 reviews at the time of writing, I think it's worthwhile to add my two cents.

With this lovely short course on the property, it's hard not to play this one first as a warmup before jumping onto the red or the blue. It really makes me wish it had some short loops as per my con, but it's still a fun course to start on. Out of the 3 courses, I like red the most (easily) and green ekes out blue. If blue is a 3.5 (good course), I don't think green is a 4 (excellent). I think it's a 3.6 or 3.75. I'm giving it a 3.5, though, because I'm a stingy butt.

Playing on a private property course can be hit or miss. Chad has really put his heart and soul into this course. Chad told me he used to work at Blue Ribbon Pines until he got his hands on this property. The style and grace of BRP is very evident on this property. He's typically welcoming people, collecting his $8 (what a steal!), shooting the breeze, or on his ATV cruising around working on teepads and the like.

I like to end my reviews by imagining what kind of a player I would be if this were my home course. This is a tricky question to answer since there are three full courses on this property. Focusing just on the green course: With such short holes, I'd obviously have 0 long shots. Even with a putter in hand, I wasn't ripping it on most holes. Accuracy is king here, and there's no doubt that I would eventually be able to hit the wings off a fly from 100 feet. I think my long putts would really surge, too. On average of my rounds on the green course, I'd guess half of my putts for birdie have been outside circle 1. I'd also save a lot of money on plastic! It's hard to lose discs when you're only throwing 200 feet and can see the whole fairway every time.

This is an incredible piece of property. I visit my mother-in-law down in Cambridge (about 30 mins away) about once a year. I will definitely return. For those of you who don't have a reason to be so close, I strongly recommend setting up a trip and playing all the courses on the property. The camping looked like a good setup, so an overnight could be a great time.

With the blue course at a 3.5 for me, the green a 3.75, and the red a 4.5, I think I would give the entire property and experience a solid 4.25. That's more than the average of the 3 courses. At $8, it's such a good value to be able to have such different experiences on a well-maintained course. I solidly recommend Chain's Edge.

Abbondanza of FUN 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Mille Lacs Uplands

Sand and Stone Till creates a Multitude of Varying Elevation
From slightly undulating Terrain, to Ridges Ravines Ribs Saddles & Washouts

Course plays entirely Wooded under a Canopy of Maples, Oaks, and Walnut Trees

Pretty Dank Understory of Ferns
Never DG'd thru Ferns under a Maple Canopy before... it's pretty awesome, Highly recommend it :D

The Stonework for the TeePad areas is pretty Excellent
And the Stonework for Stairs and Greens takes it to another Level of Excellence
Then the Decks at 8 & 10 take it to other new levels of Magnificence!!!

Nice looking Wood used for Homemade Signage

Plenty of Arrows to help the Frolftards along. Thank You

Paver Tees were excellent, with my Playing style, in my experience

Chad has done a Phenomenal Job of Designing a Superfun Discing Experience in these Woods

You like throwing Mids for Birdie Looks?!?!?!

Lots of Sweet Fairways and Sweet Greens on Green

Stupendous use of the Elevation

Starts out by going in thru a Fern Gulley Washout thingy 1-4

6 thru 13 is a main reason for the Hype regarding Green
I'm not going to do a hole by hole breakdown
Just gonna say it's as Fun, Challenging, and Pretty as any Birdable stretch of Discgolf out there

18 thru 24 Play around an area with the Least Elevation changes, on Green
These Fun Holes are Diverse in both how they Look and how they Play
But the DG all still Feels very Green Course :)

Cons:

Not sure if Clay is what makes the Till Brownish or not, but it would make things Extra Slick during Wet conditions, if it were so

With all the Deciduous Trees, Leaves could hide Discs during Fall... am assuming

Dragonflies were out, during my Visit
Not sure how Pesky the Mosquitoes get out there, next to the Lake Overflowage

Only 24 Holes

Other Thoughts:

Some things are still a Work in Progress

More Teepads have been installed since Bobs review

Views of the Lake on numerous Holes is probably something everyone Enjoys and Remembers about Chains Edge

Ferny Understory is something else everyone can Enjoy and Appreciate out there

Birch/Poplar Trees along Fairways or around Baskets add to the Aesthetics on some Holes

There's mostly Maple Canopy here, but sometimes I'd walk up to my Throw and be standing on a pile of Acorns, then look up at a Massive White Oak
Trees on Red are even Bigger versions

Threw Meteors and Buzzz' like a Mofo at Chains Edge... and Loved every minute of it :D

Pros:

- good quality baskets
- great navigation, very simple and easy to follow
- good variety of distances ranging from 150' to 350'
- very technical lines are required to score well
- you can see almost every basket location from the tee
- good amount of elevation change
- camping available
- you have the option of playing 3 different courses

Cons:

- dirt tee pads, they are very flat and solid pads but for a pay to play course you expect concrete or rubber
- tee signs are very basic, not a whole lot of detail
- some shots start to feel repetitive after a while, tunnel shot after tunnel shot.
- no water obstacles which you would expect in Minnesota

Other Thoughts:

Just to clarify, since I was a little confused myself, this is a property with 3 different courses. Green, Red and Blue. Green is 24 holes and the other 2 courses are 18. The green is the shortest but most technical. This is an incredible property and I really want to play the other 2 courses.

Best in MN 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Elevation, tunnel shots, very unique. This is the best course in MN. Every hole would be a signature hole anywhere else.

Cons:

Dirt teepads, could use more trashcans.

Other Thoughts:

This is the shorter of the two courses, you must play both. Very reasonable rates for camping.

Amazing Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Choice of two course ( Green & Red with the red baskets very easy to see through the trees...the green's a little tougher)
-Beautiful, thought out design
-Mostly wooded with at least one water obstacle and elevated lanes
-Can play all day for once price
-A bit isolated, but a local bar and grill sits about a mile away with a very nice view of a charming lake.
-Outhouse are at the start of the courses and I even saw one half way through the Red course
-Through the course is fairly easy to follow, lots of signs point the way if you get turned around.

Cons:

-Off the beaten track, and a tad hard to locate the first time.
-Bring repellent and even long pants and shirts. The mosquitoes were very bad that day and even cut my game short.
-Out houses, at least one, was in desperate need of being swapped out
-Some of the course signs were down, offering a bit of confusion at a few points
-No concrete tees, but tees are well designed and stable Not really a problem, more of an observation.
-There is a fee for playing, not a con really but it should be know to all who choose to play there.
-There is a lot of vegetation here and the lanes are narrow, even the best golfers may be looking for lost discs.

Other Thoughts:

Starting on the Red Course I was struck by the beautiful red mushrooms that lined the paths, the lush green ferns that sprung up around me and the tiny frogs that constantly dared me to stomp on them. On this course you are as one with nature as it gets and it is elevating. At moments I felt like I was transported to the Black Forest, half expecting to see a cottage made of ginger bread at the next turn. That's how enveloped this all feels.

It is a Pay to Play course and if you come on a weekday I would suggest trying to contact the owner and let him know when you plan to arrive since he is not always there or available when he is there unless he knows when you plan to arrive.

There are two course a Red and a Green course, The Red is longer and, according the owner, easier. Red and Green baskets are used to identify and separate the two distinct courses. I can't speak for the Green Course, but the Red Course does have a water hazard and some sunny wide open lanes that break from the trees about half way through its run.

This is one of the best courses I've been too and I so want to play it again. Every lane is a mini work of art by the owner who is passionate about disc golf. You can see how much of himself he has put in this place with every well though out lane. If your in the area I think it's a must.

Top 5 MN course / #1 disc destination in MN 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-24 holes of heavily wooded technical fun
-Great natural pads that I personally like. The soil is more sand than anything and creates a nice solid surface to throw from. Does not get all sloppy from rain, the sand drains much better. Slip factor not as much of a factor on these pads as it is on a standard dirt natural pad that gets muddy.
-Great design on almost every hole on the course. Chad does a great job at creating the lane for the "best" shot at a run towards the basket, however, he also gives an alternative lane for a guy that maybe isn't as versatile and is stuck on only a forehand or backhand.
-Navigation out on this large stretch of property is made very easy to follow. Anyone should be able to throw a hole and using the arrows easily find that path that leads to the next hole. There are 48 holes out here and my group didn't once seem to have an issue navigating.
-Basket locations all easily determined from the box. Don't believe we had to walk up and down a fairway at all out here scratching our head as to where the basket was. With a little bit of common sense and perhaps stepping off to the side of a box we were able to spot where we were going on most holes.
-Can camp in a tent out here or utilize the cabin Chad has available. This is very convenient for the crowd that looks to put some rounds in out here.
-Tons of fun holes out here. I walked up to hole after hole and found myself saying this looks like another fun line to throw. Chad understands what he is doing and creates fun lanes requiring the player to be skilled in many different throws. The 1 throw hyzer shot will not get it done out here if you want a decent score.
-You throw uphill, downhill, right, left and s-curves throughout this course. You really can't be a one trick pony.
-The downhill shots out here are truly something to get excited about.
-outhouses on site and are fairly clean. Hovering isn't completely necessary out here.

Cons:

-No garbages out on the course, requiring you to hold onto anything you brought in with you or be the complete jacka** that throws his garbage out on the course. This is a one man wrecking crew out working on this course(chad). Please be respectful and let him focus on continuing to make the course better by picking your own garbage up.
-Outhouses at the start, but beyond that make sure you bring a rag in case of an emergency. The terrain out here is similar to mountain climbing. Hitting up 24 holes without a toilet at the midway point can make for a rough situation if the rumbly tumbly's hit hard once you get a few holes too deep. Make sure you take care of any questionables before you make the trek or you may regret losing your tshirt back in the woods.
-I believe there was only 1 "water" hole on this course. the terrain in general is what it is and most holes you will be looking at the same hazards as all the other holes out on the property. The water you do have to throw over is right in front of your face and would like require a horrible kick off a tree or a slip for you to hit.
-The holes are all fairly short with a few getting some decent distance. This is what it is, the course is highly technical and if these holes were too long it would be impossible to feel good about your game after throwing it.

Other Thoughts:

Chad is doing an awesome job out on both the courses on this property. It is very difficult to distinguish the 2 courses which is somewhat of a drawback. This property truly feels like 1 course containing 48 holes. However, the 48 holes Chad has designed out here are 48 holes of complete awesomeness for anyone who enjoys a good technical course. If you prefer a more routine, long holed "championship" style course only, this may not completely satisfy your needs, though you will have fun. Beginner players and those who never developed their game much will have a hard time out here as the lanes require you to understand how discs fly and good technique. I came out with a group of 3 and wasn't sure if we would be staying 1 night or 2 nights. As soon as I drove into the place I had a better idea I would be wanting to stay here longer. Chad was very hospitable and we stayed in the cabin. The cabin is a shell, wooden cabin that gets the job done. Look at it this way, it saves you from having to set up a tent basically and protects better from the elements than a tent if needed. If you are a big arm guy that really has no technical game, you will likely not like either of these courses. Be honest with yourself, come out with the right expectations and work on your technical game out here because it is probably the most fun I have had throwing technical courses. An easy comparison for those that have played it would be Standing Rocks in Wisconsin. These courses are awesome and I recommend every avid disc golfer to get out here immediately before everyone is out here. Top 5 in MN no doubt in my mind and when you add in the ability to sleep right out on the courses, it makes it a top disc destination in MN.

One of MN's top courses! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

well designed, well maintained, bathrooms on-site, beautifully technical (but not impossible for good shots), amazing scenery, many elevation changes on almost every hole, well placed tee boxes, no overlapping, next tee signs on every hole, lanes for almost any throw from tee boxes, new baskets, shorter course (distance) than the Red which makes it a little easier, no bugs when I went, more ace-friendly holes than the Red

Cons:

pack-in/pack-out course with no garbage receptacles, restrooms are only in the parking lot (can be a problem with 24 holes), signage is pretty minimal for the course-property entrance, gets a bit muddy especially the natural tee pads after rain

Other Thoughts:

With 24 holes, expect to spend 3-4 hours with a group to finish. This course is second to only the Red course that shares the property (IMHO). Expect to have your mind blown from how much this course has to offer. Chad, the owner/designer is awesome and very helpful. Do yourself a favor and plan to play this course on a Saturday or Sunday so you aren't racing the sunlight. The Green run is a little easier than the Red run with distance being the main difference. Plenty of variety in hole design and no repetitive holes. This is a Bucket List course, hands down.
