Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 24, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course isn't great. The layout is simple. But, man, how I wish this course was across the street from my house.
- Location. Scenery. The appeal of this course is that you're an internet distance's throw from the Great Pee Dee River. This is one of the best backdrop's for any course I've ever played.
- As for the course itself, it's a simple, short par 3 layout. Plenty of birdie and ace runs. There is a challenge here that creates an extra level of difficulty. That's the winds blowing off the water. Had one gust blow my soft toss completely off line. Lesson learned.
- Great course for beginners, families, and those looking for a relaxing round. This is a great course to introduce new players to the game.
- Based on the tee signs, holes range in length from 135 to 275 feet. Online and on the apps, you'll see different distances.
- Course does a good job using the trees as obstacles. Most holes may only have one or two trees. They just so happen to be right in the way of the line you want to throw (said through gritted teeth). There's a small marshy, wetland area to the left of the #7's fairway that presents the only risk of struggling to retrieve a disc.
- Course is surprisingly easy to navigate. Holes are all clustered together. After finding the first tee, it's easy following the flow. If not, you can always use the online map for assistance.
- Good course for practice. Baskets aren't in the best of shape, but are more than adequate for what's needed here.

Cons:

Hole length issue needs to be addressed. Each hole has a single tee and a single basket. Yet there are three hole lengths listed for each hole on this site. One is from the tee sign; two are from the scorecard. Hole #3, for example has lengths of 160, 185 and 222 feet. You play the hole at 185 feet when it's actually 222, well sir, you just played yourself out of a birdie.
- As has been mentioned already, tee sign for #1 was missing completely. On other holes, the signs are laying on the ground. I'm assuming fixing tee signs after a tropical storm or hurricane isn't the highest priority.
- The layout, based upon the hole numbers and UDisc map varies slightly from the online map listed on this site. The only difference is #5 & 7. Based on the tee signs, #7 is the hole to the far side of the park, the one with water in play. The map listed here has that as #5.
- I suspect the course may flood easily and can take time to dry out at times. For locals, that's not an issue. For out of towners, may be an annoyance if it's your one chance to play.
- For the pickiest of nitpicks: holes #8 & 9 are the two easiest on the course. For those who expect courses to end o n a high note, you won't end on a bang here. Sorry to disappoint.

Other Thoughts:

East Bay is a fun, simple design. I enjoyed the 15 minutes it took to play. I suspect many will.
- Other than #4, 7 & 8, the other six holes all felt virtually the same. Sure, you may have to start your throw a little further left or right to make it around a tree, but you can throw the same shot on every hole. #4 & 8 are more wide open, and #7 has the 'water' obstacle and a little more length.
- As stated above, the breeze off the bay will give the course its strongest punch. The couple stronger gusts, maybe 10 - 15 mph, did start impacting shots. On a really breezy day, it would be fun navigating 30+ mph winds and seeing if it's a struggle to shoot par.
- Course can be played with only a couple discs. #7 was the only hole I needed something with a little more speed as I was trying to throw across the wind.
- I'd surmise that many of us would want this to be the course across the street from our homes. Having water, and a disc golf course, as our front yards is a good thing.
- You're 45 minutes to the two 18-holers in Myrtle Beach and Sewee Outpost near Charleston. There are a couple nine-holers closer than that. If you're nearby, it's worth your time to stop by for a quick nine or 18.

East Bay Park - Georgetown's Contribution 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

East Bay Park sits about 20 miles south of Murrells Inlet . Just inside of Georgetown . The park was semi crowded with lunch eaters and parents with kids . There was a Port O Let near the tennis courts .
The Equipment - The tee pads are cement , smaller but new . The signs are blue edged with hole # , par and distance . The baskets are numbered Chainstars and look pretty new . There is tape on the basket rungs to point you to the next tee . I don't know why most parks don't use this idea .It really helps with navigation . There is a shelter in the middle of this park , which is nice on a hot day when you need a break .
The landscape - The park and course were mowed and branches trimmed when I was here . The park was clean . There is a small bridge near the number one basket that you might use if the course is soggy in spots . This course is true park-style . There are some trees to contend with more in the center of the course , and there is a marsh that you will have to throw near or over on I think #7 .( Don't land in it . It's really wet . Not that I would know mind you , A local might have told me ) . The total acreage of this course is very small . It sits between 3 roads and the rest of the park .This course will be wet during a good rain or the water rises on the bay .
Appearance/Atmosphere - The park is nice , and the course , although small looks okay . What makes the appearance shine here is the south end showing the bay . I bet this course looks incredible at sunrise or sunset .
The Highlights - Not much in the way of highlights here . All of your throws are going to be straight ahead and short .. You might have to contend with a few trees on some holes but you won't have to be creative .
No signature hole , but my favorite one to throw was #7 , 275' over a marsh .with 4' high plant life in abundance in it .
Disc Risk - As long as you avoid the marsh ( I found a disc in it ) , the rest of the park will keep your risk low . No overgrowth anywhere but there .
The Time - It took me 25 minutes to play this course , and I had to look for a disc . A group of 4 will get through this in 45-50 minutes .
This is a tight fitting course , but if you have it all to yourself like I did on a Thursday midafternoon , you have no worries . I can see kids or newbies getting their first ace on this course . If not , they will still grab a load of deuces .

Cons:

#1 Alligators - If you read the front page of Disc Golf Review , it says that alligators like to sun themselves in the ditches of the course . From my testimonial that I had an alligator come up at me on land when I was putting at Sunset Park In Sea Breeze Florida , An alligator sleeping or not will scare the Bejesus out of you . Stay aware .
#2 Safety - only a concern if multiples are playing here at the same time . Fairways can run close together and the wind coming off the bay can alter and magnetize a disc to your cranium .
#3 Navigation - Spotty . You can see all 9 baskets in many spots in the park Print the map and eliminate . The hole numbers aren't all correct on the map .
#4 Challenge - Flat , missing tight lanes because of a lack of trees , most holes are straight ahead . the total distance of the course is under 2000' . Did I miss anything ?
#5 Out of the way - Georgetown needed this course . It is a pretty long way going south to Sewee Outpost , and Warrior Run is 17 miles north . But the course is kind of a distance for anyone else to play a 9 hole course except for the locals .
#6 Other Tees , Please ? - I saw no second set of tees to make this an 18 hole course when I played . Maybe gators where sunning themselves on those tees while I was playing .That said , the con is that it is only 9 holes .
Because of the water , bugs can be bad when its hot . You may want to spray before you play during the summer .

Other Thoughts:

I don't know how much tourism Georgetown has during the year , but a disc golf course can give both the locals and the vacationers something to do other than going to the beach 7 straight days .The city will get double or triple their investment back when out of town players stop here to play , then eat lunch , fill the gas tank , maybe even check out the whole city . I bet this course is captivating-looking at sunset over the bay . I only wish I had the time to see the city and take it all in .
My Recommendation - Great intro course , and fun for the family and 1 discers , + dates . It's short and fast . Only putting and approach practice for the experienced . The course is out of the way and near uncollectable for baggers , and travelers unless staying in the Georgetown area . If in the area take 20 + minutes and play the course and see Georgetown , but don't make a special trip . The course is not quite there , yet .

Fun to play with a map! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 31, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Easy Ace Race course with short distances.
*Greens are very well kept.
*Baskets are in good shape.
*Great course for beginners to learn the basics.

Cons:

*Navigation is very poor, unless you have a map or someone in the group who has played this..Good luck.
*Basket are in good shape, however they are the cheap portable style with less chains causing alot of spit-outs.
*Due to being the low-country, when it rains this course will flood.
*Horrible bugs during the hot summer months.

Other Thoughts:

This is a course that has alot of potential, however in it's current state it is just passable imo. A great place to teach drives with it's short holes. However with little buffer zones between holes and lack of variety of distances, this course is not worth a drive. If you are in the area, then I would play it.

Pleasantly surprised 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 10, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete pads put in within the last year. Tees are a bit small, but fine for short course.

Baskets look new and all in great shape. Most have tape showing direction of next tee pad.

Grass is being maintained so pleasant to walk around.

Cons:

Large wet area on one hole, but easy to throw over and walk around.

Short course and a good player should be able to do most holes in 2. But still a good place to practice.

Tight layout but nice for the small few acres they had to use.

No map on site so kind of hard to figure out the layout. But since the whole course is in view, shouldn't be that hard to figure out.

Other Thoughts:

Looks like someone has put a little effort into the course lately with what looks like new basket and concrete tee pads. Nothing to drive out of the way to play, but if passing through and want to stretch your with a quick nine or get some practicing in, is a great place.

Definitely don't let the older reviews prevent you from stopping by. I've played in the past and just mainly stopped by to see how bad the course had gotten and was pleasantly surprised with the great condition.

The Course that Time Forgot 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 19, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a really beautiful parcel of land that borders the bay. Very scenic.

The land is overall fairly well utilized, and there are actually a few thoughtful drives/approaches that face the player. Most holes have both a forehand line and a backhand line which makes this course very beginner friendly. There is good separation between disc golf and the playground which minimizes disc safety concerns.

Portajohn on site and a nice playground if you want to bring the family

The water hazard/OB (marshy area) on 5 didn't look like it was any fun to throw into, but it did at least make you think a bit about that drive.

Cons:

Unfortunately there are lots here:

The baskets are in terrible shape. They started as cheap single chain baskets but have been beaten up pretty badly. There are some laminated patches on the basket trays (not sure why). Hole 8's pole appears to have been broken at some point and the basket is secured to a stake in the ground.

The baskets themselves (most of them) are moveable, meaning the layout you see on the map may not be where the baskets are located. It seems that someone probably stole the basket for #2. I used a tree as a target on that one.

The tee boxes are single patio stones. One for the red tee, one for the white per hole. Unfortunately, on many holes, they are both painted white. This makes navigating the course very difficult because there is no signage (see below) so without help you don't know which tee is which or even which way to aim. A course map is an absolute necessity when you come here.

There is basically no navigation. Hole 6 is the only hole with a sign still in place. Hole 7's tee marker is the only one I saw that was numbered. I couldn't find the tee for 5, and given the fact that the baskets are mobile, the map wasn't that much of a help because the previous basket location is the only clue there to help find the next tee. I wandered around for 20 minutes before I found the first tee.

Baskets are not numbered, which on some courses is not a problem. But when you can see all of the baskets at the same time and they are all so close together, having them labeled would be a huge plus. In addition, the fact that the #2 basket is missing also made things pretty confusing.

Hole lengths are all very short and the course gets monotonous. I am sure the hole lengths are a bit off as well since the baskets are mobile.

Wear some old shoes...there was a ton of standing water when I played which by the looks of it is a pretty frequent problem.

Other Thoughts:

It is always great for towns to get a new DG course. But when not used much, we get courses like this that have not gotten much TLC over the past few years. I have to wonder if courses like this are doing harm or good. On one hand, it gets the sport some exposure. But the exposure here is unfortunately so low quality that it might deter people from continuing to play. I think with a bit of work, there could be a decent beginners' course in this park, but as of right now, there doesn't seem to be much initiative to maintain this one.

At least the scenery was nice... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's right on the bay, so the view is awesome. Easy course when you can find the tee pads. Wind adds some challenge. No real hazards to contend with.

Cons:

Lack of a decent map - i used one of the signs on hand to try and figure it out, but it was of little use. Gave up trying to find the tees for 5 or 6.
Disc catchers are barely functional.

Other Thoughts:

The only reason I didn't score this course lower is because it at least gave me something. The grass had not been cut the day i was there and the provided maps look like they were taped to real estate signs - and they weren't very good to use.

Homer Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Love the setting of this course. Beautiful views of Winyah Bay.
- Layout works well with available land.
- Recently installed tee markers (short and long) makes it easier to navigate than before.
- Rarely are there other players so it is a peaceful place to play.
- Does not take long to play, which can be good if you are short on time.
- Lots of ace run opportunities (I have only hit one in ~100 rounds) but still makes it fun

Cons:

- Frequently the course can be wet during high tide and after heavy rain.
- If you hate wind, you wont like it here. It is easily the biggest challenge here when it is blowing (makes for great practice)
- Sometimes there are non disc golf players who don't realize there is a course there and will walk their dog around, or setup a picnic. (infrequent, but does happen)

Other Thoughts:

- I live right in Georgetown, so I can walk to the course. Perfect place for me to play a quick round and get some practice.
- Sure it is not an elite course, but is perfectly suited for someone who lives nearby to get some practice in. I love it for that.
- I hope the town continues to support it to some degree. The baskets are okay for now, but they could use replacements within 2-3 years.
- East Bay Park is near downtown Georgetown which is a great area for walking around, having a drink or dinner. I am so glad this course is here, hence my relatively high rating.

So pumped that Georgetown has a course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 6, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has one element that makes it extremely challenging--the wind.

By playing your own tee pads, you can make it a more interesting course. I used the concrete from the playground in the west corner of the park as the tee for #2 and #4. For #5, I used the road behind the tee (East Bay Dr). For #8, I used the east corner of the park (as far northeast as I could go before I hit the swampy bits).

Cons:

Baskets suck.

I would like to have seen more pins extremely close to trees, protecting them.

And, of course, mosquitoes suck.

When I played, many of the vinyl tee location signs where either gone or blown to various parts of the course.

Other Thoughts:

This is the worst course I've ever played... But what matters more is that Georgetown has a course! I grew up in tha G-Funk, but didn't start playing DG until I moved to California. I was shocked when I came home and visited my mom and she told me there was a disc golf course in Georgetown. It barely passes as a "course", but still.

Anybody that complains about this course does not understand how awesome it is that Georgetown has a course.

Spend money to install NEW baskets and redesign it! I'd strongly suggest 9 Innova DISCatchers! These can show # on the basket to avoid hole # confusion.

Birdie Central 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 10, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a free 9 hole course with plenty of activities for the family. This complex has portable toilets and a big playground for the kids. The 9 hole course is great for beginners or players wanting to boost an ace or birdie record. I found that the wind conditions gave the holes a nice challenge. This course is great for beginners to intermediate players. There were signs with the tee numbers at every hole. With being in Georgetown, a smaller city, the traffic noise is very low. The scenery is very nice with a beautiful view of the water. There are no water hazzards and very little widlife.

Cons:

Although there are tee signs, the goals are not numbered. So be very careful not to play the wrong basket. This course is a fast, fun course for beginners, however better players may find themselves bored. The goals are instep baskets with only a few chains, causing some pop-outs.

Other Thoughts:

This may not be the toughest course, but is a great course to practice control and attempt ace shots. I found myself overshooting alot of baskets with ease and was hitting birdies alot.

Bland 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

*A nice view of the bay in the distance with some tall marsh grass
*Some nice tall pines and well manicured green grass in a clean park.
*Being a short, relatively open, Green level course it would be a good place to teach a brand new beginner how to throw.

Cons:

Basics
-Tees: not marked at all. With no markers I just threw near the tee sign.
-Baskets: In Step baskets are weak, seem cheap with weak chains, and no numbers on them.
-Navigation: there's a map on every tee sign but since the tees aren't marked and there are usually several baskets in sight, it can still be confusing which basket to aim for. It would really help to have numbers on the baskets!

Design
-Terrain: Too open and all very similar. Every hole feels about the same.
-Fairways: Lacking variety because too many straight holes and no doglegs right. 6 Straight/ 3 Left.
-Elevation changes: None; it's completely flat.
-Length variety: Very little. 11 of 110-185/ 5 of 200-285/ 1 of 305 ft.
-Greens: too open for my taste, so overall they were below average

Amenities
-Very limited. There were a few trash cans, but no warm up basket, no message board, no benches.

Other Thoughts:

Course Level = Green (most suited for kids, short throwers, and players rated 775-825.)
It's a good course for beginners because it's open and they can't lose a disc, but more experienced players won't find much challenge here.

~2 sets of tees allow you to play 18 holes, but the 2nd set aren't marked in any way and are just 25 ft straight behind the original 9. It's rather boring that they don't really add anything but a little bit of length.
~Tee signs: functional but below average
~An extremely basic map and a basic score card are available online. Make sure to bring the map with you. Having unmarked tees combined with several unnumbered baskets in sight it would be really hard to know where to throw without the map. Even so, I still made a few mistakes and had to replay to the correct hole.
~When I played in May the horse flies were horrible, nasty, and really annoying. This may only happen at certain times, but it was unpleasant.

As my rating indicates, my enjoyment of this course was quite low. Some aspects can't be changed-- such as being flat and a small park with all the same terrain. But if a few changes were made it would be much more enjoyable. Here are a few of my main suggestions: 1) Mark the tees. Even better would be to put down rubber pads; 2) Number the baskets. This would reduce a lot of navigation frustration and thus increase the "First Time Friendly" (FTF) factor; 3) Get new baskets that are permanently installed. My personal preferences are Mach Vs or Chainstars.

A note about my rating: My rating is a subjective measure of my enjoyment of the course, on the day I played it, and it is NOT intended to be a measure of the quality of the course. Endangered course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Free! Next closest course is a play to pay over 30 minutes away.
This course is a good family outing on a cool (non-windy) day.
9 baskets marked with small vinyl signs. Tees 10-18 are around 30 feet behind the signs, look for reminence of white paint.

Birdie fest that would boost your ace count if the baskets were not mach 1.
Lightly wooded, enough to create challenge to beginning and recreational players.
Rec center sells a small amount of discs for $6.00 each (cash only)

Cons:

Tee pads are hard to find patches of grass that are sometimes marked with white paint. Course does not offer a challenge to highly skilled players, unless the 30 mph winds are blowing off the bay. Wind can be a huge factor.
Locals say the bugs and lack of shade are brutal in the summer.
Course is muddy and flooded, the tide comes right up and can overtake the course. BRING WATER PROOF SHOES.
The basket of hole 8 sits infront of a road and a scum filled ditch.
Navigation can be confusing for the first 9, but the signs are usually nearby to help, but baskets have no numbers.

Other Thoughts:

I hear this course may soon be on the extinct list when baskets are sent away to a new course. Also baskets are not secured and theft may cause this course to become prematurely extinct. If you are in the area and want to try to boost your ace count, hit this course before the baskets are gone.

Throwin on the Bay 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 21, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

East Bay park is in a park along the Winyah bay in Georgetown, SC.
-UPDATE: Concrete small concrete squares have been poured in the ground to identify the tee with distance and hole# listed on the square. Not big enough to be a teepad, but enough to identify the tee area. (A friend from back in MB gave me the upate)
-Great for beginners, one can learn to develop strategies for throwing around trees and other obstacles here at this course.
-The trees actually give the course a fair challenge for beginners. You'll need different strategies on different holes.
-Great course to work on ones short game
-Has a varying lengths for the different holes. There are a couple distance holes around 300ft. The shortest being 110ft.
-For such a small area, the pin placement is excellent and well thought out. For what it's worth!
-There are bathrooms (porto's).
-The rec-center does sell discs for 6$. It's the cheaper plastic's, but they have Innova, Discraft, & lightning. Did I mention they sell for 6$.
-The directors of the park were very nice and helpful. They are always glad to see new faces throwing discs.
-Nice signs with an over-view map of the course.
-Grass is well manicured and the park is well maintained.
-They have one mosquito trap on the front half of the course! (You WILL still want to bring some Deet or Off)
-Scorecards available in the office, or from this site.

FYI: There is a Farmers Market open in the Parking lot during the summer, and Tennis Courts as well. In fact, look for the Tennis courts and you'll find the Disc Golf Course.

Cons:

-The baskets could use another row of chains. I realize they were donated to the course, but I've still had many blow through shots.
-It's a very small course. This course most common phrase uttered by first time visitors is "You mean this is it???". I think that says it all. Remember, this is a park course, nothing more.
-Navigation can be a little tricky on your first round. It's usually not an issue on following rounds.
-Park attendees can be oblivious to Disc Golf.
-East Bay is right on the Bay, when the tide comes in, it can cross the road, and flood the backside of the Course. Holes #7,#8,& #9 are prone to flooding from the high tide. The water does recede fairly quickly though.
-If you are going to play here, consult a tide chart for when high tide is.
-The bugs can be vicious on the backside, starting around hole 6. (I mentioned it earlier, bring repellent!) I've been using Avon's "Skin So Soft Bug spray/sunscreen" and it's actually kept the bugs at bay. They will still hover around you, as if they were looking in a window, but it should keep them off of you.

Other Thoughts:

East Bay Park is a nice little small town rec course. I think that this course will improve and develop over time. So the more people play here, the better! This is a recreational course, not a professional course, so bear that in mind if you come here. For years Tupelo Bay has been the only option for people in the Myrtle Beach area. The nearest courses being 60 miles in any direction. It's good to have more than one course to choose from, and it's nice to actually see a few obstacles. If you are in the Grand Strand area, I would encourage you to come down and play here. I probably wouldn't make a special trip to play this course, but if you live in the area it's worth checking out. Georgetown County needs to see people playing this course, because that could lead to more courses in the area!

Nice Day By The Bay 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Short course. Great for rookies or those woking on the short game.
-Clean, well maintained course tucked away in a beautiful coastal neighborhood on the bay.
- Good signage w/course map on each sign. (Signs on hole 5 & 7 were switched)
-Course flows pretty well and is fairly easy to follow.
-Restrooms (portajohns)
-Terrain is flat and mostly open. Could be great for rolling.
- Park pretty easy to locate.

Cons:

-Course Not Permenant - Baskets are Mach I Portables
-No tee pads - Tees are marked with a sign and a little area of white spray paint on the ground.
-Potential for confusion in locating targets & tees due to non-permenant nature of the course.
-Because of small course, there is potential for crisscrossing on busy days.

Other Thoughts:

This is my 1st time playing in the great state of South Carolina. Go Gamecocks!!!
The park was pretty easy to find but we did not use the DGCR page directions. We took Rt 17 but turned on to St James Street and then made the left on to Duke Street. The park is between the neighborhood and the bay so there is an opportunity to see some wildlife over the marshes. We spotted quite a few water fowl during the round which was a cool treat.
The course itself is short but mostly open with large, tall pine trees scattered throughout. The trees are used fairly well to give some interest and challenge to the course. There is some OB that does come into play. (A little marshy area to the left of hole 7 & a road and ditch that runs behind hole 8)
Since it is on the bay, there is a fairly steady breeze. It was a beautiful August day so it wasn't that bad but I'm sure it is a major factor on lesser weather days.
Though it is a 9 hole, the alternate tees are not much longer but do give the most holes a different look and often make you alter your drive from what you did on the short tee.
After our round we chatted with some locals who were also playing the course for the first time. They gave us a little background info into the history of the little course. Thanks Tom & Dan!!! Seems odd that with such a great ball golf scene in this area there are few disc courses. But if you find yourself in Mrytle Beach and in need of getting that Disc Golf Fix, enjoy a pleasant day at East Bay.

Bad basket cost me an Ace! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 18, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good course for beginners and those who never played before. Park is close to bay, so wind adds to challenge. Extra course to play off US 17 when traveling along the SC coast between Charleston and Myrtle Beach. It's now playable 24/7!

Cons:

Sad to see thin-chain temporary baskets for a brand new course. I missed making an ace that a DISCatcher basket may have caught! Layout was confusing at first. It may need redesign to improve safety - if more people were playing all at the same time.

Other Thoughts:

While the Georgetown Parks & Recreation Dept. should be praised for creating this new course, they should be encouraged to spend money to install NEW baskets. I'd strongly suggest 9 Innova DISCatchers! These can show # on the basket to avoid hole # confusion.
