Bored At Ford Park

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ The venue is spacious and peaceful with a peppering of tall shady trees.
+ A practice basket nearby the first tee.
+ The course is very open so you can let loose at full power, but...

Cons:

- ...The course is very open, which means repetitious distance throws.
-/+ Tee areas are just sand, dirt or grass, but the 'concrete layout' has passable concrete tees.
- There is no nav signage, but disc golfers' logic usually prevails. So does Udisc...
-/+ Tee signs are just the link# and distance on a colored post unless you're playing the 'concrete layout,' which has decent signs.

Other Thoughts:

If a course is mostly open such as Ford Park, then I feel as though it needs to compensate for that in some other way. Give us grand elevation challenges. Send us over a pond. Sometimes, the available land doesn't have those. Okay, then give us island greens, mandos and so forth. Ford Park tries a little bit to do these things, but it isn't enough to save it.

For the blue layout that I played, there are three fairway modifiers that I encountered. Links12 and 16 have double mandos to force players to focus on their aim. Link18 has a clearly marked 'fake pond' to throw over. The rest of the course is just a point and shoot fling-fest with two exceptions. Link11 was nice to look at and play because it has an actual ceiling partway down the fairway. It is the closest this course gets to having anything resembling a tunnel. Link21 was my favorite one to play because the basket was defended by a ring of small trees- kind of like bouncers or body guards. It was an actual obstacle to defeat, but it was too little too late. Link2, for what it's worth, has a small valley for elevation. If you can ignore the OB fence and road on the right-hand side, then that one could be fun to play, too.

My least favorite link? Pick one. I'll say link14 gets that distinction here because it has the player throw in the direction of a residential road. Plus, it is one of the most wide-open and featureless fairways on the course. Lots of these links can be described like that, though. Despite the trees that we see in all directions at this place, they don't pose much of a threat because they are few and far between. This is a park-style course if ever I've seen one. Very few areas of rough. Generous space between trees. Links10 and 11 have a fenced-off area to the right that functions as OB. Link13 has the player throw over an OB park road, but that's as careful as a player needs to be here.

All told, it is obvious that this course is meant for the big arms and power throwers. It could also be a harmless place for the newbie to introduce themself to the sport without too much tree interference. I wasn't too crazy about Ford Park, but that's no reason why you shouldn't at least see for yourself. It won't stir anything inside you, but don't let my word be your deciding factor.
If you are a course bagger, then this course is for you by default, but no matter what flavor of disc golfer you are, don't be in a rush to get here.

Throwers Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 6, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Easy to get to with tons of parking. There is a smaller parking lot located near hole 1 that will do just fine for everyday use and if there are tournaments here then there is plenty of other parking in the park that is around the course.

+ Practice basket near hole 1 that seems to be one of the older Mach baskets used from the course prior to its upgrade to DISCatchers.

+ Brand New DISCatcher Baskets. Nothing more to say here.

+ Great teesigns that give you all the relevant information.

+ One set of concrete teepads. There are up to three tees for each hole but only one concrete tee per hole. Concrete tees are for the white layout. Would be nice to see them all be concrete eventually but it's nice to have what there is.

+ Teepads are tall person and James Conrad run-up approved. The tees are large and tapered. They are also flat to the ground with most holes having plenty of space behind them to get a good run up on.

+ The course is set in an old park with huge trees. It's pretty much an open course that weaves thru these huge trees. Nothing is really too tight for wooded golf but there are enough trees around that its not a truly open course. For it being slightly open, there weren't a ton of straight lines to the baskets. You have to shape your shots off the tee here. The bigger arms will have a great time here.

+ The course uses the little bit of elevation on this course nicely. I would say that the course has some rolling hills on it, nothing crazy for elevation but enough that it makes a difference. This course uses it nicely.

+ - Hole 4 has two baskets. This can be a bit confusing. Its awesome to see that you have a choice of which basket you want to throw to but when I played the hole, I didn't know that there were two baskets. It was only after my 3rd throw on the par 5 that I even noticed that there was a shorter position I could have played too.

+ The flow of the course is pretty great in my eyes. Its not something that you normally think of but its nice to see a course where there are long holes and short holes and they mix them in-between each other so you aren't just throwing your arm out one hole after the next.

Cons:

- Not a ton of variety of shots needed. If you are a completely FH or BH player, you will be able to throw your preferred line on almost every hole.

- Hole 19-21 seem like an after thought. The first 18 holes play pretty naturally. Starting and stopping at the parking lot. 19-21 also start and stop at the parking lot but they are a bit out of the way to play. It also kinda stinks that they are natural tees and not concrete. The tees were muddy and the ground was not flat when I played them so I had to make up my own tee to play.

- Felt like there were a lot of tweener holes. There were some soft par 4's and some tough/long par 3's. Everybody plays the same course so it's not too big of a deal but if was noticeable.

- Navigation would be tough without uDisc. There were a few times where you go search for the next tee and in the area there are multiple tees in sight. There were also more backtracking to find tees then I would have liked to see.

- No loop back to the parking lot after half the course. The course plays in a big loop around the park. Bring everything you need from the beginning.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a fun playable course. Its a bit more open then I would like to see but you still need to hit your lines on a good majority of holes. If you like to air shots out then you will love this course. There are plenty of longer holes with a few shorties mixed in. There was nothing that stood out to me as a signature hole but Hole 2 was pretty to look at and play. The holes kinda all blend together, each hole is unique and nothing is too similar but they aren't all too unique either. Not really a good or a bad thing, just a thing.

So I liked this course but I wouldn't say that you need to go to any lengths to play this course. If you are in the area and play here then you shouldn't be disappointed.

50 tee pads and 22 baskets to choose from. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The Big 3: Ford Park features Discatcher baskets, concrete tee pads, and metal tee signage on all 21 holes. The baskets appear to be brand spanking new. It looks like older Mach style baskets were replaced last year based on pictures. Signage also looks brand new (possibly replaced at the same time) and really top notch. The concrete tee pads are plenty long and tapered. This course truly nails the basics.
- 3 Tee System: This course features gold (pro), white (amateur), and blue (novice) tees. Sometimes all three tees are separate, sometimes blue and white are combined. On one hole all 3 are from the same tee box. If I counted correctly, there are a total of 50 tee boxes on the 21 hole setup. That is such a great feature to appeal to a wider amount of players. The only downside is that only the white pads are concrete and have the only detailed tee signage. This is true unless blue and white are combined, in which blue also has concrete and signage. The other pads are natural and feature painted wooden poles with hole number and distance. The addition of all concrete pads and signage at every tee box would put this course in a very high rating for me personally.
- Hole Features: #2 has a really unique/beautiful rocky green with a view of the lake. This is probably the most beautiful scene on the course. Many holes feature large mature trees that are great on the eyes and provide challenge. There is some extreme basket guarding on #5 and an elevated basket on #6. Finally, hole lengths vary greatly from sub 200 to over 800 so there is something for everyone.
- Staging Area: There is a practice basket and pavilion with picnic tables and trash cans. A course map would be a great addition here.
- Amenities: I counted a total of 5 benches and 4 or so trash cans. The addition of more benches would also help to solidify this as a top course.

Cons:

- Navigation: Fortunately, I had a guide for this course but I can see where navigation might get tricky in a few spots. Unfortunately, this course lacks the primary things that will help with this. I didn't notice a course map, next tee information on tee signage, or next tee indicators. These would all be great additions to this course.
- Elevation. Ford Park doesn't have much elevation change at all after the first couple holes. Obviously nothing can be done about this but it is worth noting if that is your thing.
- Basic Holes: A few holes seemed very basic due to being wide open and flat with minimal obstacles. #14 seemed to be the main culprit. The elevation is tied into this drawback. Some shrubs in spots might help with this issue a bit. However, you could always skip the 3 weakest holes and make a really great 18.

Other Thoughts:

Not Pros or Cons:
- Single Pin Placements: The addition of multiple pin placements is always nice for locals and tournaments. However, this is far from a con here with 3 tee pads on many of the holes. That certainly breaks up any monotony that might be felt after many rounds here. Also, #4 has two baskets to choose from.
- No Turn: This course makes a massive loop around the park and does not return to the parking lot until after 18 so bring anything you might want mid round. However, There is a convenience store a mid range shot away from #15 basket. I walked over and grabbed a water. The pinnacle of convenience.

It'll do just fine 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Ford Park is situated by a lake on the Northwest side of Shreveport. 18 holes, and several tees on each hole, but I don't remember seeing multiple tees after the first few holes. The lake never comes into play, and you don't really get a look at it other than on the drive up.

Holes are a mix of long challenging pars, and short birdie-ace opportunities. There are a couple par 4's and 5's to really add some more advanced challenge. For being an open park, there aren't a lot of just straight open shots. If you want to get close to the pin, you really need to put yourself in position. But don't get me wrong- this is not a technical course by any means.

I did have a lot of fun playing this course. I never got the "same hole twice" feel. I got to use several drivers and a good range of shots to reach the pin on this course. There just wasn't anything super stand-out about it.

There are a couple holes that are unique, like one that's short, with a wall of short trees between you and the basket. You can't really throw through them, just around. It was interesting.

Cons:

That's really the only real con, is that nothing about his park takes it to the next level. There's no significant elevation, there's no notable scenic holes. It just is.

Navigation can be kinda tricky at first, I couldn't figure out which tees lined up with which color on this app. So if you use the DGCR app to keep score, it's going to be a little difficult.

Other Thoughts:

I like this course. I almost rated it a 3, but I think on the strength of its variety it deserves a 3.5. I know that DGCR calls a 3.5 "Very Good," and it may fall just short of that, but it's definitely more than your standard average, or good course. Between this and Highland Park, this is the course with more intentionally designed holes, and longer fairways. It has an elevated basket! But HP, a neighborhood 9 hole course, has more elevation and shorter holes. They compliment each other well, and it's hard to say which I would play more if I lived in Shreveport, but I will play them both again when I return.

Good mix of hole lengths
Interesting baskets placements
The trees
This is a great looking park

Cons:

The interesting basket placement can make locating your target a little difficult

Other Thoughts:

We only played the front 9 due to time constraints, but enjoyed this course very much. Hole 5 is particularly fun with the row of small trees directly between the tee and the basket. The pine trees on this course are HUGE! We will play this one again.

Worth the trip. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 23, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The more that I play Ford Park, the more it grows on me. I also remember that I enjoyed the first time playing it.

This course is set in a municipal park with gentle elevation changes and mature trees, mostly tall pines. The first 6-7 holes wind through the pines and then the course opens up a little, with a few exceptions, and then ends up back in the large pines for the last three holes.

The standout holes in my mind are 2, 4 and 10. Although many of the holes are laid out very well.

Other park activities don't seem to interfere with the course. There is a good mix of very short, middle distance, and long holes.

The average level of difficulty is not all that high due to the lack of any underbrush to speak of. The large trees will punish errant shots and add strokes on longer holes.

Navigation is fairly straightforward. I didn't have a map, but never got lost after locating the first tee box (which didn't take long). The tee boxes on most holes are large and are wider at the rear which is very nice.

This course uses a lot of real estate and there are no cross play issues. Some of the holes have some added features to make them more interesting (one basket on a tower so that it can be see from the tee (but the tower cannot), one behind a hedge line, one shot between two rows of trees, etc.

Cons:

Some of the baskets can be a bit difficult to locate from the tee and the signs are not the best. All of the signs are marked with a par of "3" which is clearly incorrect on a number of holes. Though there are multiple tees, only one set is concrete. The rest are dirt.

These are minor and certainly don't detract from this being a fun course.

Other Thoughts:

If you are in the Shreveport area, this course is close to I-20 on the western part of Shreveport and is a convenient stop.

All Around Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great course for all levels of players. Course is well maintained and provides 3 different levels of teeboxes that will make the course very playable for anyone. The course has short holes for Ace runs and birdie opps after you play the 500+ft holes. Very good use of the abundant park space. The course also flows pretty well from basket to to teebox. It wasn't a very busy day when we played but the course seems to stay outta the way of the park patrons so that the course and the park can be enjoyed by both.

Cons:

Some of the hole signs seemed to be old or just wrong. It was my first time to play so maybe I looked over something I should have seen, but it was a little confusing on a few of the holes. I believe it was hole 4, that said that the hole was 300 or so ft, but there was no possible way that is possible. Mhy guess is that the locals may have changed the course up recentley but luckily DGCR had up to date distances to look at.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this course, and would love to have a course like this to play on a day to day basis. Good mixture of long and short holes and great use of trees, bushes and roads(OB) to create a good challenge. I am definitlely going to make the trip back to this park in the near future!

Pros:

If you wanna bomb some drives this is a great park for it. Not overly technical but you still need accuracy and distance to score well here. This is the best park in SHV in my opinion.

Cons:

Because of the length you need at least 2 hrs to play the course. Make sure and take a drink with you too, a convenience store is close by though.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a really good mix of holes, and has a great atmosphere & scenery with it being right off the lake.

Stretch Ye Arm Out 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has many open holes, some sparce trees, OB, mandos, protected baskets and uses the entire park. With 7 holes under 300 feet and 4 holes over 600 feet, you can't go wrong with the hole length variety here. The OB areas are fair and can be considered tough. The road through the park has some parking sections that can sneak into play some. It made it interesting. The sparce tree holes had greatly placed trees allowing alternate routes and yet still made fun holes. The long open holes really let you open up your drives. The shorter holes are excellent with some great pin placements. The long tees have nice concrete tee pads. The baskets are older but were still in decent shape. The tee signs do have the length and hole map on them. Navigation here was not a problem. This place has picnic tables and a restroom.

Cons:

The shorter, grass tees are marked by stakes with the tee numbers on them. The negative about the good tee signs is that they are put in the front of the tees and could get in the way for some people.

Other Thoughts:

The Fun Factor for Ford Park is better than ok. Most of the holes are in the shade and the variety of hole lengths makes this place a real treat. The desire to tee off multiple times on these holes was not really there, but it was enjoyable just the same. The park is nice and clean and the golf was fantastic. I would certainly play this course again. I sure wish I had been staying closer to Shreveport, so I could have played the other courses.

I liked the playing in the tall Pines. The Course has a good flow to it. Holes 1-8, 11 and 15-18 are played in the shade of the pines. 12-14 are long open holes.
I like how this course has cool things about it, #5 Basket is right behind a row of tall bushes/trees, and #6 elevated of the ground. Multi -Tee Boxes

Cons:

Signage not so good, though the course has good flow to it, I found on a couple of hole looking for the basket after throwing the path show on the T-Box sign.(never found #3 Basket)

Other Thoughts:

Beautiful Ford Park with the old Steam Train and Fire Engine right at the front of the park, there used to be an old Sherman Tank there but I guess they moved it. Very nice park will definatly play again when I'm in Shreveport. I like playing under those tall pines.

Beautiful 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This park is absolutely beautiful. Long open spaces, short grass with tall pines, little to no trash. This course reminds me some of Pecan Acres Park in Nacogdoches TX. Just when I started thinking this course had too many short holes, it throw a 725 at me, then a 735 and a 710. There are a couple mandos late in the game that make those holes much more challenging. Someone else said this and I agree, many holes seem to favor Leftys/Forehanded throwers because the right side is nice and open, the left is blocked. See my picture of hole 9, perfect example. I loved hole 5 (also see pic), solid wall of trees in front of the hole, requiring a tricky loft shot or going around. Hole 6 is elevated on a brick pedistal about 8 feet, kinda hard to putt at. I was there saturday morning on a beautiful day and this park wasn't crowded in the least, maybe 12 DGolfers in the park total and a few walkers. The walking trails are mostly removed from the course, so they're not a problem. Bathroom was clean and there wasn't a lot of graffiti and carvings on the picnic tables, benches etc.

Cons:

This course is a lot of walking, some long holes and a few good walks between the holes, so be prepared for exercise. I agree, could use a couple more benches, but there were several so I'm not really complaining. There is a fenced area around hole 10 and 11 that like to eat your discs, but don't worry, you can slip through the gate to get them back.

Other Thoughts:

Gorgeous park, well maintained. Benches, picnic tables and a restroom on site. Good signage, though sometimes wrong because something has been moved. I really enjoyed this park, and I will play it every time I get over to Shreveport.

Terrible am. tees. The pars marked on the signs were crap. Half the holes had masking tape over the par with another number written...bad. Do not play for a few days after a big rain, the place floods easy. Wished i could have known the correct pars for the hole. Hole 15's mando was completely not needed. I messed up and played hole 16's basket for hole 15 because it was rediculously far out there. The sign did not help (And marked an impossible par 3)

mostly open, partly wooded and all fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 24, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice mix of distances. 3 different tees per hole. holes 1-6 and 8 are more wooded and overall shorter except for 4(716) and wooded. the back 9 opens up for some open bomb shots(except for 16 & 17) which for the most part have large differences in their alternate tees if you can find them. Hole 6 is now sitting on top of a neat looking platform made out of some type of bricks(same color as reg bricks). It was the first time I had shot at an elevated or novelty positioned pin. I swear it wasn't there last week. Very well manicured and super long concrete tee pads. It is always freshly mowed but I have never actually seen anyone mow it. Poor BJ, just bad timing. No walkers in the way. This course offers you a disc golf only round and even though you can see other people in the park they are normally not in your way and you soon forget that they are even there. Usually not more than 2 or 3 groups except for rare weekends and the shreveport clubs tourneys or leagues. Usually not windy. Great baskets that don't spit out too many of mine. starts and finishes in the same area and is easy to navigate with good signage.. great place to try out new drivers. practice field is next to hole or 11 or 12. It is right after the 250 ft kind of tunnel shot.

Cons:

flat terrain makes it an easy course to burn out on if you play it too much. being next to a lake just teases the golfers that like over the water shots. The pars are not marked correctly. par 3s don' t range between 200 and 700 ft. Even I know that. only about 40% of the course is shaded, the rest you are getting pounded usually with heat and humidity so you people that sweat a lot had better bring something to dry your eye area right before you launch. There is more room to the left of hole 7's basket across the park road is a large area that starts in the open and then becomes very wooded with a good amount of width also so you wouldn't have to get very close the playground . maybe they will add 9 more.

Other Thoughts:

It is a fun course to play but if you only have 1 day in the shreveport area then you must play lake Bistineau and ford. Play Bistineau 1st it is more of a workout but has almost everything you could think of including water.

Great stop along I-20! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

LONG Teepads-I don't know why we can't get these in Texas. Feel free to run on these things!

I love the mature pine trees on this course. They create obstacles in the flight path without low hanging branches to grab discs. Accuracy and a big arm are needed on many holes but there are at least 5 holes where birdie (if not ace) is a real possibility. Then again, a 3 foot wide pine might stop your disc in its tracks.

The course is easy to navigate. My brother and I found every hole quickly the first time out with no map.

The park was not crowded at all and was well maintained.

I will probably stop here everytime I go through Shreveport as it is only 10 minutes north of I-20 and a GREAT course.

Cons:

Some of the fairways (4-8) play too close to each other. An errant shot could easily head through an adjacent fairway.

Also, I felt like this course favored sidearm shots more than RHBH. You could play it if you've got a good backhand annie (I don't) or you can choose to forehand it. I felt like more than half of the course either finished right or the easier flight path was right-finishing.

There could be some more trash cans and a few more benches scattered along the course but that is picky. I almost never have anything to throw away or a need to sit down.

Other Thoughts:

The posted pars were inconsistent. The first two holes were 400 footers with a posted par 4. Hole 18 is over 700 ft through moderate woods and had a posted par 3. PDGA guidelines even for gold rating would rate that at least a 4.

But that's just for the over/under par, the number of strokes is more important anyways. I just don't feeling like I shot 3 over par for Hole 18!

Cons:

They were mowing the day I played with the giant speedy industrial tractor-like mowers. I really thought those guys were going to run over our discs every now and then. Sometimes they would stop mowing to let your throw, but they would leave it loudly running in the middle of the fairway and stare at you until you threw!

Other Thoughts:

I really liked playing this course. Scenic views of the nearby lake on the drive in. We had a little trouble finding the park, but some very nice workers at a seafood restaurant on the lake helped us find our way.

Pros:

Very nice, well-maintained park with lots of giant pines and gently rolling hills covered in grass (and pine needles)...almost ball-golf-like in parts.

2 sets of tees on every hole (original/concrete, alternate/dirt)...find the right local, and he'll show you even more "unofficial" alternate tees and layouts ;)

Although the park has pretty much the same terrain throughout, there's plenty of variety throughout the 18 holes, both in terms of length and type of shot/line you'll have to play. The course has everything from short <150' ace runs to 450'+ long/open bombers...but no tight wooded or tunnel shots, as there aren't any dense wooded areas in the park. The closest thing to a tunnel shot comes about halfway through the course on the hole that plays next to the fenced-in Parks & Rec building (2 rows of trees form a semi-tunnel). The "signature" hole is probably the new #4...LONG (has to be close to 800') hole that requires a tight shot off the tee followed by another well-placed and long drive to even have a chance at a 3. Hole 18 is another pretty unique one...around 600' long through one of the more dense areas of trees, ending with a basket nestled underneath the branches of a few small trees next to an old railroad car.

My favorite thing about Ford Park is the ratio of trees to open areas...there's enough space to "grip-n-rip", but just enough trees to keep you on your toes. Also, the landscape is very conducive to rollers (which I always enjoy).

Cons:

If you're like me in that you enjoy a lot of "visual variety", Ford might get old after a few rounds....still a very fun course, just looks about the same from hole to hole.

The only other Con I can think of is that the amount of pine needles on the ground during certain time of the year can make it hard to get solid footing, especially when playing the alternate dirt tees.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, a very fun course...aside from Lake Bistineau, this is the only park in Shreveport I like to travel to for casual rounds.

There's a gas station right across the street with awesome chicken strips (seriously) and a place called "Bayou Daquiri" in the same shopping center...so you can "refuel" between rounds :)

Not Bad 2+ years

Pros:

Nice multi-use park with bathrooms, playground equipment, picnic tables etc. Course has 2 tees for every hole giving you options on length. Easy to navigate in general except for 1 basket which had been moved and was hard to find because the yardage was way off. Lots of shade on a hot summer day.

Cons:

Not a lot of variation in terrain as the park is similar throughout. No signature standout holes. On each hole only one of the tees is concrete (the other is dirt)

Other Thoughts:

The course is well designed but the sameness of the terrain hampered the effort in my mind. I like the option of 2 tees (every course should have it). Ther is a lake on park property across the street. Too bad water could not have been included in the design.
