Pros:
The pop-up 9-hole track at Forest Hills Park a great taste of the full 20 holes used at the annual Matt Keatts Memorial C-Tier.
+ Pop-up courses are all the rage in the Triangle! In addition to the 18-20 hole temp courses we've grown accustomed to for annual tournaments (e.g. Downtown Urban Open, Airbourne at WakeMed Soccer Complex, the full 20 at Forest Hills), we're now seeing short-track pop-ups (Forest Ridge, Dix Park East and West, and now the Forest Hills 9). It's an exciting time for disc golf course baggers.
+ These 9 holes are similar to some select holes from the 20-hole layout, but not the same. Theirs also on the shorter side, designed for Rec to Intermediate players and introducing people to the game.
+ Even being a shorter taste of Forest Hills, there is still great variety in the types of shots you need off the tee: hyzer, anhyzer, straight, flex.
+ Beautiful, well-maintained urban park with lots of mature trees and big oaks.
+ Navigation is easy with tee signs and the UDisc map.
Cons:
- Sadly, this course only pops up once--make that twice--per year. The full 20 holes are more challenging and have more variety, obviously.
- Being a temp course, the tees are natural/grass and get very torn up after a couple of days of heavy foot traffic. After even a little rain, the course gets very muddy, torn up, and slippery. There are even areas with big swaths of standing water. Flooding and drainage are a real problem here when it rains.
Other Thoughts:
Definitely check out this course and keep the pop-ups coming in the Triangle!
