A Pleasant Surprise

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Let's start with infrastructure:

Every hole has concrete tee pads from which to throw from. The tee signs are cleverly built into the ground in stone or some other rock surface. This is an ingenious way to avoid most types of vandalism aside from graffiti and they may even be treated with something that allows them to be wiped off. Judging by the upper class neighborhood I doubt you have to worry much about vandalism to be honest. The baskets look brand new and are incredible looking and catch discs quite well. Navigation is super easy and straight forward so no need to hunt for the next hole. The kiosk when you drive up shows a large map of the course you could easily take a picture of if you really want to but you don't need it. The only note about navigation is after hole 8 walk up the walking trail for the last hole. The course is very well maintained and manicured, mowed on a daily basis and I saw a city worker removing downed bushes and doing other work while I was there.

So the course it self and how it plays and why it's fun:

You can see by the hole distances that this is not for big armed pros or anything like that but it is a fun course and not just throw into an open field. Holes 1 and 2 use the trees and ditch area on the road side of the course to make fun little throws that aren't boring. Holes 3-8 use an array of different elevation both up, down and sides of hills to make otherwise putter shots fun ace runs.

Hole 9:

This was quite the surprise. This is sort of a mini top of the world type shot almost as an introduction to newer players to the sport . If you had never seen a huge downhill throw before this hole would be super exciting for you. As a long time player and course bagger I've seen and played many top of the world holes and though this isn't Diamond X or the old Whistler's Bend layout it is a fun downhill toss and at 250 feet or gives my champion zephyr a work out and probably newbie arms as well.

Cons:

Most if not all of the holes are little too open and I would love to see the city plant some trees especially on holes like number 3 which is the only wide open hole on the course. There isn't much length here so obvious cons for those of you who have a cannon and like to show it off.

Other Thoughts:

It's designed for locals who are just getting into the game and does a nice job of easing them into the sport and also giving them something to strive for in terms of improvement. I was thinking this was going to be another wide open pitch and putt but ended up having a pretty good time. I played it with SuperClass discs, well disc, just me and my Champion Zephyr and enjoyed my time here. I think it's worth a play if you're in the area and not just for course bagging purposes. I really have to give the city props it's looks like they love this little park, are taking care of it and are proud to have disc golf be in it.

Fun Neighborhood Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Surprisingly fun layout, especially for a 9-hole neighborhood park course. More challenging than I expected, too.
+Beautiful setting nestled against the foothills of Bountiful Peak. The grass is lush and the park is impeccably maintained.
+Elevation changes on almost every hole: some subtle up and downhill shots, and a couple really fun ones with the basket way downhill from the tee pad.
+Baskets all in great shape.

Cons:

-The tees are horrible. They are natural, and only marked by 2x4s in the ground and a concrete tee sign which is also in the ground. You can't see the tees or sign until you are within a couple feet of stepping on them. Also, the tees are pretty severely rutted out. I ended up throwing either next to or behind most of the official tee boxes.
-Park does appear to get busy with non-DG activities. Runners, bikers, and picnickers all can get in the way.
-Only 9 holes.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the better layouts I've seen for a 9-hole course embedded in a neighborhood park. It really was designed well. While the tee pad/signage situation is pretty annoying, the course is still well-worth stopping by if you are in the area.

Pros:

- good quality baskets
-the tee signs are really unique and helpful
- other than holes 1 the navigation of this course is very easy, markers at every single basket
- good elevation change for a little park course
- decent variety of distances for a short course
- course sign

Cons:

- most of the tee pads are dirt and grass and are pretty rutted up
- hole 1 is sort of hard to find
- course plays over and around a field and park that I'm sure can get busy, making playing the course pretty sketchy

Other Thoughts:

Fun little course to warm up with as long as the park isn't busy.

Pros:

- I like the grass tee pads
- Signs are correct and informative
- Makes good use of space and elevation

Cons:

- Hole #2 can be a hazard with the parking lot & gazebo so close
- #3 & #4 play over a grass field that can be busy
- Tee signs are placed in the ground so it can take a second to figure out where you are going

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun little park with a few open holes to let your disc fly and a few holes that challenge your shot placement. It is multi use so depending when you go some holes can't be played. I personally really enjoyed holes #7 & #9.

First time at Freedom Hills 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Where do I start? Nicely manicured fairly open course. Not too many technical challenges due to the fact that most of the course is open. The signage at each hole is quite descriptive with distance, map, basket placement, and next hole info. The baskets are nice, new, Mach V baskets. Holes 1,2,7 have the only real obstructions to contend with where as most of the holes have a grip it and rip it feel. There are several holes that have a good amount of distance and a few nice short birdie opportunities.

Cons:

The cons. The signs are located in the ground along with grass tee boxes. So it can be difficult at first if you are not familiar with the layout to find the next tee box. So pay attention during the previous hole as to where the tee is and you won't have a problem. Hole #2 plays alongside the parking lot, so be careful on your drive not to hit someones vehicle. The hole probably should be skipped if the parking lot has several vehicles in it. If the park was busy, it could definitely hinder your round due to the multiple walking paths through the course.

Other Thoughts:

I had a great time today. The course was well kept and the park and paths were mostly empty. I was the only person playing from about 11:45 to 12:45. I especially liked the elevation change on the 9th hole with the exception of the little hike to get up there. I would recommend this course, and plan to add it to my usually played course list.

Pros:

Located in a well cared for park, with most of the shots playing over well kept grass. It is family friendly with paved pathways. Has a playground, which doesn't get in the way of disc play unless it is a really wild shot. Brand new Mach V baskets. Good tee signs. The change in elevation on a few holes make it fun. The backdrop of the Great Salt Lake is beautiful and it is at the base of the foothills that offer good short hiking trails. It is located in a neighborhood, but only one hole really has any possibility of the disc entering the neighborhood (hole 2). For such a family friendly park, it is not too common to run into big crowds.

Cons:

When there are people there, then a couple of the holes can be unplayable (2,3,and 4). Hole 2 has a few possible dangers with the parking lot on the left, a pavilion about 250 feet in front of the hole and private property on the right about 230ish feet ahead. That being said, I haven't seen hardly any issues here. Holes 3 and 4 play over the main part of the field, so if there are people then these holes may need to be avoided.

Other Thoughts:

Living in Davis County, this is my favorite place to play for a quick round. It is perfect for beginners and intermediate players alike. The par on holes 2, 4, and 8 are set at 4, but this is probably set for beginner level as they are not difficult par 3s. There are only nine holes, but I feel that the course design is great for the space available. I have seen more and more players here, but it is not typically very busy. This is a new course (as of 2015) and I believe the first to Davis County.
