A Water Park Washout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are 6 Mach 2 baskets and 5 matching cement tee pads . There is a spacious parking lot near holes 1 & 6 . 5 signs accompany holes 1 & 6-9 . That's it .

Cons:

A decent course was installed in Freedom Park in 2010 . Somewhere in about 2014 part of the course was removed for a large water park ( it DOES look nice ) .They removed baskets and tee pads for 2-4 and the tee pad for 5 . I walked the grounds and found that they not only have a huge man made sled hill , but they also have a large pond in the back and a walking trail . For whatever reason , they never replaced the missing holes and redesigned the course . They could have put a natural or turf pad on the hill and put a basket or 2 up there and remove them in late November for the winter or make alternate holes away from the sledders . 6-8 are wide open shots with no obstructions anywhere . Wind will be a factor . Hole #1 where you either have to throw a roller through small trees forming a canopy or throw over top . Same with #9 . It is less a course and more a practice facility for disc golf . I missed a putt on #7 because the basket must have been hit with the mower and leans . I guess the park had second thoughts about disc golf after the water park came in . Guess what . The water park is seasonal , likely Memorial Day to Labor Day at best . Disc Gold can be played year round . If you want to know , you can play hole #1 , make up a tee near it to throw at #5's basket , then play 6-9 in about 15-20 minutes . Getting a group of 3 to meet you here for a foursome will only get you punched out .

Other Thoughts:

When I was leaving the water park , er , disc golf course , a man with his girlfriend pulled up , opened the trunk and pulled out a nice disc backpack . I told him to not waste his time , and gave him a printout of Coyote Trace's course and directions from DGR .
My Recommendation : If you live within a couple of houses of here and want to practice some putting , or unleash some drives in the wide open spaces given here , have at it . Otherwise , drive on by . There are too many decent courses within 20 minutes of here .

Clearly a work in progress 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 22, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Ample parking, a shelter near the first hole, two level concrete tees per 18 chain DGA basket, and a large, open park to work with, certainly merits the name 'Freedom'. There are currently six baskets in place as this new community park undergoes another massive construction project: a $10 million, state of the art water park. The disc golf course will obviously play second fiddle to that (and there's even a future design for a large wave pool!). So this review has to deal with what exists for the disc golfer stopping in, not what was or what might be.

Right now, it's probably worthwhile to pull up the map here on dgcr, park at the end of the lot, and throw the wide open, level holes 6 through 8, the lightly guarded (sapling planted trees) holes 9 and 1, then decide if you want to loop back for the longer tees, or find a spot along the parking lot to throw over to basket #5 on your way. You could get in a 12 hole double loop that way.

Cons:

However, there's not much attraction as the course currently stands. The entire space containing holes 2,3,4 & the tees for 5 is now a fenced construction zone for the water park.

They have an artificial hill, but didn't use it. Each hole is level, and only varies in terms of the distances (from the 178' short 9 to the 360' long 8), so it's really just a Recreational level course right now. There are tee signs oddly placed about two feet behind the long tees, but no other significant amenities. They tried to use the young grove of trees near the parking lot to force some line shaping on hole 1, but the short tee has already gotten so enclosed, you can't really get off a completely clean shot unless you go over top of the little things.

Hopefully, the future holds a resurrection of a better disc golf course here, with the use of the 'hill', and maybe playing more holes down the west side, and toward the south end of the park, where there is a nicely sized pond.

Other Thoughts:

I actually stopped in here to see Freedom Park for myself despite the fact that someone listed the course conditions as 'unplayable'. It is bad, but you can still use the remaining baskets for practice (if not for much of a challenge).

Solid Starter Corse 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 27, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course is aimed towards beginner or intermediate players. Advanced players will have no trouble with this course.

Baskets - 9 grippy chainstar baskets. No issues with spit outs.

Tees - 2 concrete sized tees per hole (pro and am). The biggest difference between the tees is that one is further than the other. The lines are almost identical.

Variety - Most holes are on the shorter side but range from 178 (am tees) to 420 (pro tees). Holes 1, 3, and 9 have younger trees that are starting to grow. They will definitely be a factor on hole 1 when they fully grow in.

Wind is the biggest factor.

Great sings. Easy to navigate. No risk of confusion.

Clean multi-use park where disc golf does not interfere with any other the other activities. There is a walking path that could come into play if a disc is overthrown.

Great course for beginners to learn the sport of for an intermediate / advanced player to learn new discs.

No risk of losing a disc.

Many ace runs.

Very peaceful.

Tons of potential for improvement or expansion!

Cons:

Course is for the most part completely wide open and 100% flat.

Course could really use 15-25 more trees. It would make this course more challenging and would make it more of a course for advanced players to play.

There is a sledding hill near holes 6-8 that is not used for disc golf. Rearranging these holes to incorporate the sledding hill would definitely improve this course by adding challenge and elevation. In my opinion, this course would be a 2.5 or a 3 if the hill was incorporated into play.

Minimal challenge for a seasoned player.

Other Thoughts:

Although this course was more on the simple side, I played it with my girlfriend who is not very experienced. With that being said, this course is ideal for introducing the sport to a new or newer player. It will definitely boost their confidence.

I've now played it twice since it opened. There weren't any signature holes to bring me back but it was nice to play something that I was not used to playing. Hole 1 stands out the most to me.

If you are looking for potential for an ace or are new to the sport, this course is for you. If it is too easy, I would recommend Mt. Gilead in Moorsville, Blue Heron in Franklin, or any of the 18 hole Indianapolis area courses.

I updated my review 1/1/2017 due to 4 holes being removed (2-5)

A Good Start 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Thanks to the city of Greenwood to put in a disc golf course in a relatively new park. The expression "better to light one candle than to curse the darkness" is appropriate here. The south side of the Indianapolis Metro area needs more disc golf courses, and here one is. While it has a way to go, it is a great place for beginners, families, those who want to work on their game, and those who live nearby and cannot invest the time to drive to a more "seasoned" course farther away.

Cons:

It is a newer park without many trees or other challenges. So, expert or veteran players will not be challenged. The most challenging parts of this course are the wind and seeing how close to the basket one can get.

Other Thoughts:

Despite the "nine baskets in the middle of a field" reality, I enjoy this course. It is in a park that includes a playground, restrooms, basketball, tennis, and a walking path. So, when we go out as a family, those of us who golf, do so, and the younger kids go to the playground. That works for us. Other times, when we want more challenging courses, and we have to drive to get there, we do so.

Wide Open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 27, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wide open space. Great for working on different types of throws. Perfect for beginners.

Cons:

No real challenges; a few small tress. Field setting, so it's typically windy. Signs are directly behind the tee pads, so running up is more difficult.

Other Thoughts:

As this course grows, it will continue to be a great "training ground" for new comers and those who want to practice on the mechanics of thier game.

Just a series of tees and baskets 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-You wont lose a disc
-Clean, well maintained area
-Cement tees
-Great signage with directions

Cons:

-Flat, flat, flat
-No obstacles, elevation, bends
-Only 9 holes and Am tees don't make enough difference to fake an 18 hole course

Other Thoughts:

This course just is what it is. It is clean and well maintained but there is nothing to it. Every hole is just dead straight with no obstacles and between 240 and 450 feet. Not a bad place to warm up your arm after a long winter, but offers no challenge or views or anything worth playing regularly.

cement pads. multiple tees seemed to be a waste of effort, they provide little variation.
Very quiet park when I was there.
They should have used the giant mound at the park for a change in elevation, course is entirely flat.

Good Training 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 1, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

2 sets of concrete tee pads. I can't see giving any course with concrete tees a half star. Yes, I'm talking to you, Mashnut.

Safe and clean. The area is nice and the terrain is not hazardous and easy to walk.

Not busy at all.

Tee signs are nice and make course navigation a snap.

Bathrooms were nearby, but not sure if they are kept locked or not.

Good wind training. It's wide open, and the course meanders so as to require drives from all directions, so various wind angles are present.

Good perspective training, because it's deceptively hard to park holes when the basket is out in the open with no nearby reference objects.

Cons:

Only nine holes.

Lack of variety, as in no elevation or wooded holes.

Gets boring pretty quickly, and lacks replay value. Not so much good clean fun as good training.

Other Thoughts:

This course is an excellent trainer course, but lacks the variety needed to keep newbies coming back. Blue Heron has been added within driving distance, but it's too much of a leap in difficulty. I think there is still a gap in the area for a safe and fun course that is not too frustrating for casual players.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 31, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a good place for beginners to learn how to play the game and throw without worry of losing a disc. The course is completely wide open and flat. It looks like some trees have been recently planted by holes 1 and 9 which is nice to see. They're close enough to the tee that they could have some effect on those holes in a few years once they grow a bit.

The course has tee signs by the longs and there are concrete pads for the longs and shorts.

Cons:

The tee signs are centered a foot behind the tee blocking your run up if you want to start behind the pad. I found this a problem on the long holes. Also, the tee signs only list the distance from the longs

The course is completely flat and immensely boring.

There's a very large hill right next to the course that could easily be brought into play on 2-4 holes but isn't. the 50-75ft elevation change that would bring into play would certainly be a huge addition to this course while still keeping it beginner friendly.

Other people mentioned ruts in the ground. When I was here I stumbled over the occasional rut in the ground, but overall the ground seemed mostly fine.

Other Thoughts:

Unless you live in the area and are either new to the game or want some field practice, there's no reason to stop here.

Pretty bad 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 7, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through an open field. Two holes use some small trees as obstacles to make you shape your shots a little. The holes go in all directions so you have to play all kinds of wind conditions throughout the round. There are dual concrete tees that are nice and large and in great shape. The baskets are new, and catch great. It's always nice to see disc golf making inroads into a new area.

Cons:

The land available for this course is just not interesting at all. It's a wide open flat field with uneven ground that makes walking difficult, and holds lots of water after a rain. The one interesting feature of the park, the sled hill, doesn't come into play at all.

The course seems to be intended as a course for really new players, even the short tees have a few holes that are a little long for new players, while the longs aren't enough longer to really add any challenge. If you're going to go to the effort of making dual tees, especially on wide open holes, the distance difference should at least make most players choose a different disc from the different tees. There is no signage, so it's a little difficult to figure out where to start, after that it's pretty easy to follow, though occasionally it's unclear which way the hole points.

Other Thoughts:

As I said above, I love seeing new courses in areas that had none. Unfortunately, this was a pretty boring park to use, and the design doesn't do anything interesting with it. Both sets of tees have lengths appropriate for novice level players, it would be nice to see some tees designed for kids and people completely new to the sport on a course like this. Unless you want to add to your course number, this one isn't worth going out of your way for.

Its a start 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice baskets, multiple tees per hole,
ample paved parking, great neighborhoods surrounding park, very clean, great for beginners (wide open, with only a few small trees and no blind shots to make).

Not a lot of traffic (making it solid for some Safari Golf).

Cons:

Its just a big flat field. I think the course is developing as the park is being built and the surrounding area grows and develops. As the trees grow and maybe the hill can be utilized and the finishing touches are made on the course, this can be a nice little 9 holer, but for now (today) it doesn't have a lot to offer in the way of challenges and unique shots.

Other Thoughts:

Given that a pole hole is better than no pole hole and 9 holes is better than one, then this passes the test as a real disc golf course.

It counts.

And given the lack of courses of any kind in this well populated (and growing) area, I can't help but applaud building this course (and hope it leads to more). I don't want to say anything bad about it for that reason, but to be fair to this website, I have to say this is strictly for beginners right now (and hopefully the beginners in this area will grow with the course and others to be added). It is not a destination course for players looking for any challenges (yet). I am heartened by comments in other reviews hinting at more to come - I hope it happens, but as of today (8-19-10), it is what it is. A start.

Also, use the north parking lot (signs say "Greenwood Schools Transportation" or somesuch) and not the south "Freedom Park" lot.

Beginner Friendly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A course on the Southside of Indy.
Concrete teepads (coming Summer 2010). Decent use of the land that is there. As previously stated in other reviews, this was tillable land a year ago. Beginner Friendly.
The land lends itself for fun, long safari possibilities. Walking paths mostly not an issue.

Cons:

For advanced players--> beginner friendly.
Uneven terrain.

Other Thoughts:

Jerry (course designer) stated it well in a general article about disc golf mentioning the course. He explained that you can not just install a championship caliber course in an area that does not have any courses. This course is a step to more challenging courses in Greenwood and surrounding areas. (this means you Franklin, IN)

Freedom Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Easy to follow, wide open, looks like it will be well taken care of. Plenty of room for modifications.

Cons:

Wide open, no signifigant obsticles at all. That being said, it is a old hay field so it is flat, and wind has a major roll in playing this course. If it werent soo windy i would prefer the holes to be 50-75 ft longer, maybe more on some.

Other Thoughts:

I believe if i had a say in things, i would recommend: saving the $ for pouring the concrete for the short tees, as i would like the holes longer, and purchase more trees. And lay out the trees so as to include some cunning mandatories into play. I believe that would definately save this bland course.

First community course, always a beginner course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

•Mach V targets •Concrete tees & signs •trees have been planted •two tees per hole •easy to figure out next tee location •paved parking, with few trash cans •Very nice Bathrooms •Nice playground for the kids,4 slides!

Cons:

•Wide open, with wind being the only obsticle •Flat, with deep ruts from mower, could twist an ankle or trip if your not careful,if the grass is tall •Trees are not much,if any,of an obsticle •trees only come into play on #1,#2,#3 • no bathrooms or water fountain •No Alternate pin placements •the south end of the parks pond was not utilized? With the paved trail circling it, I don't see it happening.

Other Thoughts:

Use the North parking lot. As soon as you see The "Greenwood Community School Corp. transportation" sign turn right. #1 on the northside of the lot, throwing back to the entrance. Cross the entrance south for the #2 tee. If your in the area please "get a round in". If the course gets used I believe they parks Dept may add another 9. I'm sure Jerry Suiters "hands were tied" as far as what land the parks dept. would let him use. He has also designed Camp Cullom in Franfort,IN. Boondocks in Knightstown,IN. and McCulloch in Muncie,IN. I hope, can be fix with another 9 added to utilize the HUGE man-made sled hill. The south parking lot has alot more scattered trees and small mounds that will be a big improvement over the "front 9"
