Beautiful Setting, Normal Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I had the opportunity to play this course while on vacation and had a lovely time. Maybe it's because I don't get to the south much but the setting was lovely. Giant mossy oaks covered the park and a lovely marsh overlook was close by, not something I get to see every day!
-Like I said, it was beautiful. The trees were incredible and made the course a really neat experience.
-There were 3 sets of tees providing different challenges based on the layout you chose to play. Typically only 1 set of tees were paved so we just played those.
-Nice course map and plenty of parking as well as a shelter.
-The park was well kept
-Some variation on distance, though the course played well as a par 3
-Low hanging vines and branches forced some shot shaping, but there was never a lost disc risk and scrambling for par was typically easy to do.

Cons:

-Not a lot of variation. If you put this course anywhere in the country it would feel like your typical park course with some trees and flat throughout. Most shots are basic hyzers.
-The park appeared to be popular with dog walkers who would often let their dogs run the fairways. It never presented a problem and they were always friendly, but it did delay us on a couple holes.
-Hole 9 is completely unnecessary. The course is 10 holes and hole 8 finishes right at 10, but they crammed a 9th hole into a small wooded strip of land and is only about 160' long. You then have to backtrack to hole 10. It felt like someone was told they could use that part of the park for the course and they felt like they had to use it.
-A few holes play near a couple roads with at least 2 gold pads playing across roads.

Other Thoughts:

This course is really nice to have close if you're vacationing in the area. There aren't really other options but I could see having fun playing here a few times during the week and switching up tees. In the end this is your typical park course in a lovely setting.

A Coastal Get-a-way Experience 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 6, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.184 Rating) An incredibly pleasant moderately wooded flat course.
- FUN FACTOR - I refer to courses like this one as Jimmy Buffet Style. Gascoigne has a very friendly laid-back feel to it. There are benches on most holes. Searching for discs is a non possibility. Losing a disc will be limited to throwing high in a tree. Birdies can be had by novice players on a couple holes and the ace potential is very prevalent for higher skilled players. I'd be willing to bet there is a nice local scene too as the natural tees have some lane pitting.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I scored Gascoigne a touch above average. Hole (1) out the gates is a really cool tee shot with an uprooted cedar that somehow lived in the middle of the fairway. Lots of 100 to 200 year old oaks and cedars litter the landscape, some as wide as a car. What's holding a higher score back is the lack of different elements. No water, no elevation change, no rocks, no backdrop views. The course has a very monotonous feel to it.
- MULTIPLE TEES - There are three sets of tees here, Gold, Blue and Green. Being a bit of a tee snob, I threw the one turf pad per hole layout, which is a mixture of both Blue and Gold Tees. The original first six pads were in great shape. The last three will need some repairs in the next year as the lumps are very noticeable. All the short Green tees and remaining Blue and Gold tees are natural surfaces. All of the tees are clearly marked with softball sized painted rocks.
- NAVIGATION - In my haste, I may have missed spotting a course map on site. Regardless, this is an easy to follow layout. Most tees can be quickly spotted from the prior basket. The transition between basket (1) and tee (2) could have been tricky with tee (5) being between them, but there's a nice directional arrow right there.
- CHAINS - Older DISCatchers with chains that still catch great.
- MAINTENANCE - The park was well maintained during my visit.
- QUICK PLAY - I had this one wrapped up in 30 minutes taking my time.
- PARK FACILITIES - Shelter, restrooms and a drinking fountain.

Cons:

A basic 9 holer.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - Average difficulty from the back Gold tees. Only modest shot shaping and power requirements from that tee layout. In addition, the tees are not aligned to the correct colors per the PDGA guidelines. Gold is more like a tweener between an Intermediate to Recreational layout. Blue is a lower Red level Recreational Layout. Green looks to be correct at Novice level. The course is beginner friendly from the Green Layout.
- ELEVATION - Glass has more undulations than this course.
- VARIETY - Other than hole (1), the holes generally have the same look and feel throughout. As noted earlier in this review, there are no water features, rock features or backdrop views. The first six holes are moderately wooded and weave around 3 or 4 extremely large oaks or cedars. The last three holes are lightly wooded with one or two trees to game plan around.
- TEE SIGNAGE - Passable. Tee signs are only at the one turf tee per hole. Only a distance and number is given. A few seemed off by as much as thirty feet.
- WAITING - The nicest non-disc'n dog walkers that I've ever met on a disc golf course. All three I saw said hello. One even apologized when their dog jumped into my fairway that I was about to throw. Expect to wait a few times at the tee.
- PARKING - A sand and dirt parking lot with not much parking area.

Other Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised. One of the more laid back courses that I've ever played. It reminded me of several Florida courses I've thrown. I'd personally would like to score the course a 2.25. It offers all the basic elements of what I think disc golf should be. Although there are not a lot of thrills on this course, for those that just want to have an easy going round, the course will deliver. No reason for a cherry picker to come here. However, if you're in town on vacation or for work, this course will definitely feed the addiction.

Adding 3 more holes to the existing 6 holes has finally brought this course full circle. New artificial turf tee pads on every hole. There are always tournaments being held at the course. The majesty under the 400+ year old live oaks, is something to see!

Cons:

There are no artificial turf tee pads and or tee boxes for the (B) holes.

South Georgia Defined 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It may be small, but this place is absolutely stunning. the mixture of the live oaks, spanish moss, and light breeze made my time out here very enjoyable. The course sits in a small park next to the river right when you get on St Simons Island. There is plenty of parking right by hole 1 (in the shade to boot).

The course itself is only 6 holes, so you can do like I did and just play it three times for an 18 hole round. You'll throw backhands and forehands here, but keep it low. The trees catch anything high. Each hole is a little different from the previous.

One of them (I think it was 4), puts you right in front of a massive live oak with a face on it. The basket sits directly behind this oak forcing you to make a decision about which side to attack, but the face was very memorable on it's own.

While I was out there, a few people showed up to play some kind of painted rock game. It was pretty cool and led to a few friendly conversations about disc golf and rock hunting.

Cons:

Well let's start with 6 holes. It stinks. This place is a beautiful destination for disc golf, and I wish there were more holes to play. Like I said you can play it three times, but it's the same six holes three times... and that get's old.

Second because of the nature of the park, there were many non-disc golfers out and about completely oblivious to what I was trying to do. I get the impression that disc golf is not very popular here so many people just haven't been exposed to it yet. Dog walkers walking their dogs without leashes, kids running around fishing, people parking their cars right in the middle of the course... I saw all of that during my one 18-hole round.

The teesigns and teeboxes need some love. Most of the teeboxes were sand pits. I consistently had to drive next to them just to avoid hurting my ankle.

Other Thoughts:

I'm somewhat torn on this review because it's so beautiful and I understand there's only so much you can do on a property like this, but the course is really limited. I would not go out of my way to play here, but if I'm close and I'm bored... I'd hit it up. I could also see this course being a great place to get juniors into the game. It's very open and forgiving (under the canopy anyway), and with the shade and breeze... it should be easy to play.

If you're in Brunswick and looking for one course to play, check out Honey Creek. It's similar to this one, but 18 holes and quiet.

Cons:

Pretty and improved since the last time I played. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 1, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a close to complete rewrite from my initial review in 2014. I hope that I am a better reviewer since then, and the course is better since then.

The course is full of beautiful live oaks right off the mash in a picturesque setting with Spanish moss draping down every branch.

It's a beautiful place and the layout is somewhat interesting. There are three tee pads; gold that is the longest and usually rubber mats, blue middle distance mostly turf and green which is very short and mainly turf as well.

A few of the holes have benches and all of the tee pads now have small marker signs with hole number and Par. Very basic but they do the job. There are also some next tee signs which is nice.

Baskets are all Innova discatchers and are in good shape, though not new. Looks like they may have been repainted recently and hardly any rust for being so close to the salt water.

I like some of the hole designs, one with its sideways growing tree and the blue pad for 4 being directly behind an 8 ft wide tree are fun touches and the longer gold tee pads and the three newer holes in the other side of the parking lot make this course a full point better than it used to be.

Cons:

It's a beautiful spot, but a lot of one note golf. Backhand or forehand hyzer is in play for most holes and if you don't play the Golds you never need a driver, though I did use one on 2 gold and a few others when I wanted a Hyzer skip.

Signs are super basic, navigation is a little tricky(but is in Udisc and I did use it successfully).

Tons of friendly local dogs as well. They seem to know not to mess with a disc but they still around and I was afraid I would hit one from time to time.

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun breezy play and I would have much rather have been there than shopping in the village with the rest of the group I was with. A single could play 18 there(I did one from the blues and one from the golds) in less than 1 hour.

I don't see myself thinking of this course when I'm daydreaming about my favorites, but it is perfectly set and fun. Maybe 2.5 is half a point high based on what is offered but the live oaks and salty air were so therapeutic I think it's worth it.

The Live Oaks Alone 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's impossible to overstate the grandeur of the live oaks at Gascoigne Park. The course plays around and under them. The canopy of sprawling branches draped with Spanish moss is alone worth stopping at this six-hole disc golf course. The course may not be anything special but these trees are.

The course at Gascoigne Bluff is standard, beginner-level stuff. Nothing too difficult. There is a little bit of length, with hole three checking in at 38 feet to the pin. There's no brush, the fairways are pretty open and it'd be a frustration-free, first course for someone.

The best hole for for me is 4. I've seen holes the put a clump of trees and brush in front of the tee, giving players a left and right option. This one uses just one, very wide tree with thick branches jutting out to either side. (check the photo)

While there is not a ton of challenge, swooping around these massive trunks is both fun and aesthetically pleasing. The baskets are well placed, and maybe one out of six drives will want to be straight, the others will want to execute a curve. They may not be tough lines to hit for the veteran but they are fun lines, and pretty lines at that.

Cons:

I think the limitations are obvious here. Challenge is very low. There are only six holes. The tees are abysmal. (Outlined in wood, but they're natural and all dug up.) Worse, it's tough to find a flat area anywhere near the tee.

Other Thoughts:

These aren't canopy holes. This is a canopy course. Even if the discing isn't great, it's a cool place to just be. It's not too far off of I95 and it plays quickly. ( I got in 18 in about thirty-five minutes.)

Boring "course" and layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 30, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cons:

Even as a solid beginner player, I found this course quite easy and unmemorable. The sand tee boxes seemed more like tripping hazards so I teed off to the side of them.

Several random cars, trailers and junk sitting around just off the course took away from some of the view.

Other Thoughts:

I highly recommend making the drive to Honey Creek if staying in the St. Simons Island area. It's a far better course and challenge.

Better than nothing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 26, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very nice signs. The live oaks and setting make it a pretty course. A good place to try for a hole-in-one. Canopy not so low that you can't go the whole distance with a nice drive, so there is some technique practice.

Cons:

Only 6 holes. Tees are sand pits so I played in front of them to avoid filling my shoes with sand.
Dog walkers. Parked cars. Low canopy.

Other Thoughts:

Very short holes, but since you'll likely be the only one there (other than parked cars and people walking their dogs) you can easily recreate your own layout.

I don't recommend going out of your way to play this course, but St. Simons is its own destination so give it a try when you're on the island but don't expect much.

Don't have high expectations and you'll be fine. Its a small 6 hole course they put in so that something is there. I wouldn't go unless you're already there.

Best 6 holer to date! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 14, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Very nice tee signs. They do show the location of alternate shorter tees, hole #, par, distance, and a general diagram. They look fairly new but they also look like they will holed up well.

2) Massive LIve Oaks and huge Cedar trees are draped with Spanish moss creating a feel like you are playing a round on an old plantation or better yet on mama gump's homestead you know where Jenny came and gave it up to Forest!

3) Course has a good diversity in hole distance. Distances ranged from 170 to 348 from the longs. This allows for some holes requiring an approach, and some you can gun for birdie. I really appreciate courses that do not require the same discs and same shots on every hole.

4) Course has a couple anhyzer holes and a couple hyzer shaped holes. I like that they knew how to use the property to get a nice variety of shot shaping.

5) Course is very beginner friendly. It is mostly open, fairly short, and there just isn't much trouble that can hurt you too badly. There is almost no way for one to lose a disc on this courses unless it gets stuck in one of the trees.

6) There is a bathroom area, a shelter with plenty of picnic tables, garbage cans all around the first tee area. There is plenty of parking on the north end of the park (where people park their boats and trailers) although it says no overnight parking and also a lot with parking spots by the 1st tee.

7) Garbage was available on the course on hole #1 and I think I saw one near another tee.

8) Benches were available on some of the holes also. This course likely never gets busy or slow, so it won't be an issue, but it is nice to always have a place to set your bag too even if they do not get used for sitting much.

9) This course looks like there is more potential here. There could be more holes on the other side of one of the "manmade" roads. People are parking boats and trailers towards the north end but it looks like there is room for a couple more holes over there and the other holes could be routed differently to create a decent 9 holer.

10) Discatcher baskets in great shape and hole #'s visible on the big yellow band.

Cons:

1) I have to second the dip$hits parking in the fairways. Someone had parked on the straight line fairway on hole #3 so I played the anhyzer route instead. I would have much rather thrown straight at the basket than go around the treeline.

2) It was apparent that people did not even pay any mind that there was a disc golf course there. One lady who had her dog running free even let her dog $hit and never went to pick it up, and I stared at her and I know she saw her dog do it. One guy was walking his two dogs although I have never ever ever before seen someone walk their dogs while driving around in their car. I couldn't believe this . . . he drove very slowly down the 3rd fairway when I teed off on #2, then he made a veer with his car along the 4th fairway and finally decided he needed to drive right behind the 2nd basket as I was making my approach. At that point I noticed he was talking on his cell phone the whole time. "Get out of your car and walk your darn dogs the proper way and on a leash."

3) The wood framed mulch tees leave a little to be desired. I think I would rather throw from the nice sandy soil in this park. The mulch has eroded on the long tees and is being scattered all over the tee areas. I threw from just behind the tee so I didn't have to worry about unsure footing.

4) Course is very short and doesn't present much challenge even for beginners.

5) 6 holes leaves me wanting to play more DG. I suppose it fits the market and the next closest course is about 40 miles.

6) Course is as flat as flat can be. It is southern Georgia so not much more can be expected.

Other Thoughts:

I did enjoy this course despite its shortcomings. It is a cool setting for a DG course despite what the apparent local non dg'ers think of the course being there. The massive trees create a wonderful canopy that would provide shade to the course which would make this a fun cool thing to do on a hot August Georgia day. The holes are pretty well balanced and have some variety. They do not challenge as much as I would prefer but they do make you select a shot shape and execute. I wouldn't go very far out of the way to play this course but I was staying in the area on my way to Savannah so I hit it up. It is about 15 miles off the interstate so it isn't real close, but if you are a course whore like myself it was worth the trip out to St. SImons Island. The bridgeview alone was incredible and made the 15 minute drive out of the way worthwhile and scenic.

I am evaluating this course as a first time visitor. I can understand the parking issues being a problem especially in the summer but when I played, there was only one car in play and I simply decided to play around the area instead. Although these shortcomings are negative I still think this course has enough there to make it an average course. I know some people will downgrade the 6 hole course because it is only 6 holes, but I am evaluating it more on the content that is there not what isnt there.

Other Thoughts:

Despite the signs reminding people of the county leash law I saw 7 unleashed dogs running all over and crapping where they pleased without anyone even thinking of curbing their dog's waste. People parked anywhere they please, frequently right in a fairway. Retirement housing area adjacent means this is where people take their dogs all the time to crap, I saw them coming and going from there to the park. You need to play with your head down to dodge the dogshit minefield. I won't be back. Playing here early in the morning is a mistake.
