Only Kinda Okay

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a prairie course with a lot of long bombers, some more long bombers, some long tees to make the holes longer, and did I mention the distance?

There aren't a lot of trees, but there's some subtle elevation change to keep things interesting. There are also some small bushes on a few holes that cause them to go from super boring to having a little challenge. You still just have to throw over them, but at least you have to aim accordingly.

I like the par 4's, since they have slight doglegs that make big arms have to think about how they attack. Hole 9 is extra spicy, adding in a low ceiling as well.

There are two sets of tees, and although the layouts weren't complete when I played, they do look to show some promise giving some variety.

Cons:

The good holes were mentioned above. The rest are rather lousy. The fairways of half the holes have no trees above ten feet high, and that means there's so much less going for them. You're left to think about the heat since there's no shade, and potentially looking for your disc in the grass. These holes will play differently depending on how far and accurately you throw, but they're still not interesting.

But then hole 8 is, like, too wooded, with a super tight gap that just makes the hole not fun. And while I like the design of hole 9 the most of any on the course, there's a stage thing in the way, potentially.

While the long tees are helpful, they don't add much. Sometimes, they add distance for no reason, and other times, they make the hole into a super tweener hole for all but the very best players. Given that this isn't the most exciting course in the first place, I kinda want the layout to be fairly straightforward. Relative to par, the long tees are sometimes easier than the shorts.

Other Thoughts:

I applaud the effort to get the holes that there are, but this course really doesn't have a lot to offer. And for a place that you have to pay $5 to get in, and then drive two more miles to the course, I was hoping for a lot more than I got.

There are a few other trees in the area that could have been used, such as the walk from hole 6 to 7. It also could have brought the lake into play a little.

Can you have a Championship 9 hole course?

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 7, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

2 cement tee pads on most of the holes
Nice DGA Mach II baskets
Mowed Link style fairways

Cons:

Mostly Open
Long, very long from the longs for a 9 hole course
As of when I played it, tee pads are not finished

Other Thoughts:

Kansas State Parks do charge a $5 fee per car to use the park. It's worth it considering it's more than double that in Nebraska and Oklahoma park fees.

The course is in an area away from campers and beach goers. There is a pavilion and a makeshift a amphitheater on hole 9.

The course starts at the tree line near the Pavilion and winds it's way around counter clockwise.

Every hole does have a short and long tee. I would not consider the shorts a short course either. I would consider it a medium level. The longs on the other hand could almost be considered a championship level holes.

most memorable holes are hole 7 that is a big dogleg right up a hill with several tree's to navigate on the first 300ft of the hole.

hole 9 is not quite as long, but half way down the fairway is the amphitheater that does come into play. There is a small gap on the left hand side to get to the basket. There are several random trees that make going over the top not a option from most of the fairway. On the other side of the gap of the amphitheater are some thick evergreen disc eating trees. This still plays as a par 5 even though it's not a long hole.

Would I play here again? No, and I will tell you why. The 2 holes I mentioned above are really the only "good" holes. The rest are pretty boring. The course is long because it's open. Playing the rough as OB would add to your score, but I am not a fan of courses like that either.

State of the Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

I saw in the local Facebook disc golf group that the concrete tees went in at Hillsdale State Park since I played there. That will be a nice addition to the nice new DGA baskets. With a set of tee signs this park will have the basics of a well equipped course.

The terrain is flat, and has some light to moderate trees in play. I do like the links style fairways with tall grass rough to make the open holes a little more interesting. If you play the long tees tees the distance is formidable. It seems like the amount of trees and bushes hiding baskets and restricting lines grows from hole to hole.

1 and 2 longs are mostly open with doglegs in the fairway, first right and then left. 3 and 4 have large bushes that block the approach to the pin. 5 is pretty wide open again, but 6 has a basket that is planted among several trees. 7 is a very long hole with many mature trees to navigate before the fairway bends right. 8 offers a tunnel to the left or a big hook over thick vegetation and trees to the right. 9 is also long with a fairway that is pinched in the middles by tree branches and a few big old trees surrounding the basket.

Cons:

Besides having to pay for admission to the park, there aren't a lot of drawbacks. This 9 is more challenging than a couple of nearby 18 hole courses, but not quite strong enough to be the sole reason for a trip. There are campgrounds, a swim beach and other attractions within park boundaries.

I'm not sure if the concrete pads were installed for long and short tees on each hole, but difficulty levels up at the long tee noticeably. I'm sure novice and advanced players would love to have them at both.

Other Thoughts:

We took a ride on a hot summer Sunday to have a look. I was glad we got down there. The campgrounds and marina were very busy, but we had the disc golf course to ourselves.

This was the last new course that I got to explore with my disc dog, Charley. He is pictured next to the short tee in the photo of hole 6 long tee. We bagged literally hundreds of new courses together in 36 states since the summer of 2009. His company will be missed, as well as the defense he played on my opponents by wandering into play during drives and putts. Always down for a round, but enjoyed the 9 hole tracks a lot more this summer. Huzzah for Chuck.

I scored a 33 from the long tees on my only round. A birdie on hole 1, 4's on holes 3, 4 and 8, and 5's on holes 7 and 9. I'm not sure what par will be posted if the course designer appoints those values, but a 29 or 30 could be justified in my opinion. I might have to get back and try for a better score. Maybe I can talk some buddies into a weekend with the pontoon and camping gear, and take a couple more shots at it.
