Marooned between "yikes" and "meh"

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 14, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Holland High School recently installed nine holes of disc golf that play around the school grounds. The course has two layouts - a long Red layout appropriate for recreational players, and a shorter White layout good for beginners (at least, from a length perspective). The two layouts are accomplished via two tees per hole. The pads are natural, but most locations coincide with existing sidewalks or other pavement. Color-coded wooden posts with the hole number on top mark each tee location.

The baskets are Black Hole Gravity models painted a red-orange color. They are still in mint condition. One per hole.

This course is mostly pretty open, but a few trees and several man-made obstacles come into play. All concrete plays as OB, which definitely adds to the challenge. Specific shot shapes are forced on a couple of holes. The best holes on this course are in the middle of it. Bigger arms will favor hole #4, which reaches 500' from the long tees. Hole 5 requires a tricky little throw onto a grassy island. Hole 6 plays slightly downhill in a semi-wooded area.

Cons:

There are an embarrassing number of safety issues here. At least one city street, school drive, or parking lot is in play on all nine holes - and these areas define one side of the fairway on several holes. Holes 1-2 and 8-9 are too close together for my liking. The school building itself is even in play on multiple occasions. You can assume this course is unavailable during school hours, but even outside of that a single extracurricular activity could render multiple holes unplayable - and the city streets will always have the potential for traffic.

There are long walks between some holes, and zero navigational signage. You'll need UDisc to find your way around.

The course is pretty much flat, and doesn't have any particularly memorable holes.

As you might expect, there are no extra touches for disc golf here (trash cans, benches, practice basket, kiosk, etc.)

Other Thoughts:

This one just has far too many safety issues for my liking. All you have to do is look at the UDisc layout map to see it. It's especially problematic given the presumed target audience of high school students and other new players. Some of the holes in the middle of the course and the dual tees almost inflated my rating to a 1.0, but the dangers of the last two holes sank it back to a "high 0.5." Even if you are the type who isn't that worried about potential safety hazards, there just isn't anything here you won't find more of at other, safer courses nearby. I played here so that you don't have to wonder. Give this one a miss.

City School Property Course

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Easy navigation with udisc, Tees and baskets were easy to find. No natural hazards or issues with terrain, this is a very accessible course.

Cons:

This course plays thru tons of shared spaces, parking lots, sidewalks. Tons of risk of user conflict.

Other Thoughts:

This course is unplayable during school hours, this includes the extra curricular times as well, too many parked cars and pedestrians moving thru throwing lanes until mid evening or on the weekends. Be careful if you go play this course.
