Pros:

Great variety of short technical shots along with long and open holes to crush

Course is very well maintained and very clean

Beautiful lake beside the course

Overall, an aesthetically pleasing course

Nice combination of elevation changes

Very easy to navigate the course from hole to hole. You don't even need Udisc

Cons:

Biggest con is overlapping fairways. Many dangerous situations, plenty of players who don't understand disc golf etiquette since so many people play the course. Get ready to yell fore and hear others yell fore very often

There is just not that much land. It feels like putting 18 holes on this course is a bit of a stretch, hence the overlapping fairways.

Be careful on hole 4. Brutal roll aways can result in losing your disc.

One of the early So Cal disc golf courses.

Cons:

Back in the day, probably early 80s, this was the first course I ever had to pay to play - $1!
I was upset about it at the time, but pretty cool to see it hasn't gone up much.

Pros:

Fantastic hole #2 - Tunnel hole behind a strip mall! Great concept to squeeze one in. Holes #3 - 5, super cool with the hills and trees - strategically tough. Great holes on flat green areas too. #15 double Mando tee off taught me a lot on tunnel tee offs! Liked the downhill second shot on #13 - learned a lot there too. #11 is tough too next to horse fence and loaded with trees. These tough holes, make you appreciate the flat open green ones.

Cons:

$2 fee on weekdays and $3 fee on weekends - makes you play this course when you really want to, (maybe it cuts down on the traffic!?).

Other Thoughts:

Maybe because of the fees, the course is really well maintained. Like the pro disc shop their too and the fact that you can call and ask how crowded it is.

Pros:

I loved this course very friendly people and for sure gives off the Huntington vibe. Cool pro shop with snacks and discs for sale. Only 2 dollars a round is more than fair. Very cool practice putting green with multiple pins including an elevated one. Course has a good mix of distances, and different shot lines. Lots of mandos that make you have to be accurate. Nice layout and baskets/tee pads.

Cons:

Some fairways play a little to close together and the park is a very busy park. The mandos do a good job of keeping you off the other holes fairways but you will hear the occasional fore. The tee signs weren't correct I'm guessing there had been a redesign at some point.

Other Thoughts:

This course was better than I was expecting and worth the stop for sure. Playing here might take awhile sometimes due to traffic but worth the stop

Socal Beach Life! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Solid, quality course. Baskets are in good shape and the park is a dedicated disc golf facility. It's pretty dusty and dirty, but there is a tremendous mix of holes and terrain out here. Some shots are wide-open across the fairways, others are tight tunnel shots or low-ceiling drives. The first five or so holes play around the edge of the facility and incorporate elevation, trees and bushes into your game. There are a few different angles to take on each hole, but if you miss expect to be punished.

The rest of the course winds back and forth across a fairly flat park. Most of the holes are within the 300-350 foot range. Most holes have MANDO's to keep the fairway limits in check. I didn't know they were out there the first time I played so I had a great round initially! The second time I played it became a much trickier experience lol.

Holes 11-13 are lined by a equestrian center and OB fence. We got to watch horses walk by 20 feet from our teeboxes while we waited... and that was pretty cool!

There are about 5 practice baskets to worth with right next to the proshop. Most holes have benches to sit on near the teeboxes.

Other great things:

- Dedicated staff at facility
- Friendly club and regular events
- Pro shop on site
- Practice area for putting and approaches
- Scorecards, etc available in pro shop
- Dedicated disc golf facility

Cons:

If I wasn't playing with a local, it would be quite hard to navigate my way around this course. The close nature of all the baskets means it can be quite confusing to know what teepads go to which baskets.

Mandos and dropzones were hard to utilize properly without a local guiding me. Some of the teesigns were not correct as well because they recently changed up the layout.

Also the holes are all pretty close to each other... like really close to each other. I've never been to a course where I heard FORE so many times in one round. None of the fairways cross over each other, but they all run parallel in opposite direction. Keep your ear open and if you hear someone call FORE, duck and cover!

Other Thoughts:

This course definitely fits the Socal beach vibe. You will meet so many cool people out here. The staff is great as well... very friendly! Keep an eye out for the little lade that takes aluminum cans from the trash cans lol. There's a small $2 fee for a round, but it's worth it. If you're planning a visit to the course, check for weekly events! The place fills up quite a bit and can get quite bust. Parking is right outside the course. If it fills up, you can park across the street at the sports complex. Grab a map from the proshop if you can. Enjoy the round, watch out for other players, and have a great time!

Nice city course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 28, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Huntington Beach Disc Golf Course is a nice 18-hole course located in the 350-acre Huntington Beach Central Park. Park amenities include fishing, horse trails, picnicking, baseball, library, and nature center. The disc golf area is disc-golf only, always a plus.

-The course features a good mix of holes. Holes 2-5 are more wooded, and on a hillside. They provide a nice contrast to the rest of the holes, which are moderately to lightly wooded and generally flat. I believed I used every disc in my bag.

-Many different types of trees present different challenges. Tall, short, wide, and skinny, the variety of trees require a variety of shots.

-The pro shop was just a trailer, but being from Oregon, any pro shop is a plus in my book. They offer a selection of discs and snacks.

-This is a great place to practice your putting, as there are FIVE practice baskets. One of them is elevated, too.

-The Discgolfpark baskets were nice and new. They featured a built-in arrow on the cage pointing the direction to the next tee.

-Good variety - two tee pads and two basket placements on most holes.

Cons:

-The course is a bit cramped. Given the site they had to work with, the designers did a very good job. They avoided criss-crossing holes and used mandos where appropriate. Still, many of the holes were too close together for comfort. Hole 10 has a basket placement about 20 feet from Goldenwest Boulevard.

-I was not a fan of the rubber tee pads. Some of them were uneven and many were very dusty and easy to slip on.

-Even during the week, there were a some large, noisy groups drinking and smoking. During the weekend it would probably be jam-packed.

-The course was extremely RHBH friendly. As this is my primary shot, I didn't mind, but for leftys or forehand players it would be a LOT of turnovers. I only threw a forehand once, on #15.

Other Thoughts:

-Being near the ocean, this course can get windy. Not to ridiculous amounts, but enough to make you think.

-There is a nominal $2/week and $3/weekend fee for an all-day pass. Totally worth it.

-The only restroom was a port-a-potty by the pro shop.

-This course has gone through modifications due to the new senior center going up next door. Because of this, some of the pictures, as well as the hole distances on this site are incorrect. Many of the distances on the tee signs and the scorecard available at the pro shop are incorrect also. Please put up new distances and photos if you can.

-The map available at the pro shop is mostly correct, but not in color and hardly legible. I made and uploaded a new, correct map to this site complete with all current tee and pin locations. If this course undergoes more modifications, please contact me to update the map.

-I found out about this course on the original Champs vs Chumps video. It looked fun, and it certainly was. I'll be back!

Fun to do once, would play elsewhere next time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Red tees are manageable for beginners
Baskets with arrows that point to the next hole are wonderful

Cons:

Missing markers on the red tees
Many blue tees didn't seem to have markers either
Most holes just show distance, not a diagram of the hole

Other Thoughts:

This course is, I suppose, a must play if you are visiting the SoCal arena. We started our round at 9:30am and the course was pretty quiet.

While we enjoyed the round I agree with previous reviewers on the missing/incorrect signage. With the new baskets in and a $2 fee it really would be nice to have updated signs at all the holes, and to have the signs correctly mark the hole (at least one of them was wrong).

Also, there are quite a few holes where there is no grass at all and you are throwing your disc into dirt/mud. We didn't expect this and really wished we had a towel to wipe discs off after.

Pros:

Fun, technical and wide open shots mixed.
Elevation changes.
Multiple practice baskets.
Multiple tee positions.
Friendly and helpful proshop.
Not expensive to play.
Very beautiful environs.
Very friendly locals.

Cons:

Course is a little crammed together.
Can be very crowded. (Not really a con since my home course is Morley Field.)
Course layout a little confusing as a newcomer to the area.
Hole 5 and 6 (or maybe it was 4 and 5) were mislabeled and switched. (No biggie, I asked the locals.)

Other Thoughts:

After a long day playing both the back and the front of La Mirada, I cruised over to Huntington Beach Central Park to play a round or two before heading home to San Diego. It took me a few minutes, and some outside help to find the first tee, but after I started playing I just followed a group ahead of me to figure out where to go. The locals were more than friendly to show me where to throw and also interested in my story and where I was from. The course got a little crowded as the afternoon wore on, but all the big groups were more than happy to let me play through. I even got to meet some well known disc golf players and chat for a while. All in all I thought this little course was pretty neat and I will definitely come back and play more rounds here on my opportunity.

Historic - could be better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are many reviews on here
Here are the essentials:
This is the course I learned how to play disc golf on. It is a intermediate course. Pars are achievable on all holes, hardest part is keep focused sometimes, but it can be unforgiving in areas.
There are many long drives and open fairways. Holes are well placed to be challenging.
There is a great shot up a hill next to a lake through a gap in the dense trees. Usually windy and very fun shot, use to be hole 4.
Everyone likes hole 16. Big long drive open fairway with the pin under a big Kebler Elf tree.
This is a fun corse to play- defiantly has it own nitch. And local vibe.
Very popular place. Not to just play disc, but to hang out.

Cons:

This course was once better. It has gone through multiple course renovations in the last 17 years I've played there. The most recent course deign is not very good. Holes are close together. Hole 1 use to be nice elevation drive with a tree that had hanging sneakers all over it. Very classic sadly no more.

Course has lost a bit of its flow and all of its grass. This course was once lush full of grass kept the dust down and great for my dads rollers, I even was in a horse show that had jumps where hole 16 is. That's how nice and far back this course goes. This course definitely has a local atmosphere with drinking and smoking in the open. Good if you want to party but a little imbarrising In front of the parents and children.

This course can get crowded and has large groups and tournament play, best to go early- wind is usually less also. This course use to look very nice but lately it looks pretty beat up. Play for disc is fine, just everything around just looks like it needs water and maintenance.

Other Thoughts:

This course has great history. It is a little frustrating knowing that the course has been and can be better than it is now.

It will be interesting to see with winter if the rain will bring back the grass or just make mud. That course deafeningly needs some water.

There are fun holes but now not all the holes are that fun.

Tuff course, challenging, good for practice and tournament but not as much for relaxation and Park enjoyment and overall disc experience.

Other courses In The area that are better

A lot of the reviews are good. And descriptions great. Check them out and you'll be set for a great day of disc.

Happy flying

2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes in a city park. They just recently installed brand new Discmania (essentially Discatchers) baskets. I love the sturdy metal "next tee" plates mounted in the basket bottom- they look great and are extremely helpful navigating the course on your first time. Course nicely loops back to the parking lot after 9. There was a good-sized practice area with multiple practice baskets.

Most holes had two sets of tees (maybe they all do?) - a short tee with a smaller basic tee sign, and a longer tee with a larger sign with the words Kona Red (being my first time there I just randomly played some of each). The shorts would be pretty easy to master for experienced locals playing again and again, so adding the longs was a good idea and makes it more of a normal course by today's standards.

Tees are rubber and permanently attached to the ground. I had no problems with them, and this area of the country rarely gets rain. Speaking of weather, this course is playable in comfortable conditions year round- rarely gets hot or cold.

There was a surprising amount of elevation on a few holes, however it is mostly flat. There is some variety of left, right, straight, and many holes with options that keep it interesting and allow one to occasionally use different discs and shot shapes, though a straight shot or gentle hyzer can be used on just about all the holes if you choose. The best holes are the first half of the front and back nines.

Though surrounded by many other things, the land containing the course is essentially in its own area. Holes 2-4 are near a playground, but should not come into play.

The "pro shop" is nothing special, just a small trailer with discs and drinks, but it is more than most courses have. The worker was very nice and informative. This is also where you pay. It was $2/day for me to play on a Wednesday.

Plus the historical significance of being one of the oldest courses and designed, at least in part, by Steady Ed is pretty cool.

Cons:

The course is very popular and looks like it could get pretty crowded on afternoons and weekends. And on top of that, unfortunately, most of the holes are really close to other holes. Some baskets and tees are really close and many fairways run parallel and almost give the feel of sharing fairways. In short, this course is really cramped and one should be alert of discs coming at you and be careful when you throw.

It appears to have undergone a recent redesign of a few holes on the front, so some tee signs are off by a number. The current map on DGCR needs to be updated to reflect these changes of 1,2, and 6. The basket numbers were correct, but some of the signs were not. The baskets did have the correct number on them, but were often not facing where you could see it from the tee or fairway. Too bad because there are many places where you can multiple baskets somewhat close to one another. (makes me wonder at what point the permanent next tee plates were installed?)

Hole variety- though there are some holes that are more unique, there are a lot of really basic holes that are similar in regards to distance and a general lack of obstacles off the tee. The last few holes on the both the front and back are very vanilla and do not make for much of an exciting finish.

Other Thoughts:

I played here while visiting my sister, and was also intrigued by the history behind it. It is by no means a destination course, just a decent course for the people of this community to play. However, if you are in the area visiting the beaches and want to play, it has all you need- tees, baskets, and some mild obstacles. Challenging enough for more experienced players, but accessible to novices as there is a lot of room to recover from errant shots and little chance to lose discs. Nothing spectacular, but at least it is not horrible- translation: a 2.5 (decent/typical) rating.

World's Second Oldest Course Offers Wide Open Expanses! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Huntington Beach, the world's second oldest course does offer a variety of holes. A few of the early holes are more technical in nature.

The park is basically wide open and mostly flat. There are scattered trees that come into, often later on the hole, affecting your approach shots more than your drives.

This is a play to play course although the pro shop seemed to be closed the morning I played. The starts and finishes here at the parking lot, completing a large loop around the park. The tee pads are nice, grippy rubber mats while the signs are very functional, giving you all the needed information.
Two baskets are raised giving you a little variety. The front nine features the more technical and shorter holes while the back nine have more of the wide open type.
Supposedly, this course gets really crowded but it wasn't bad on the lovely Friday morning I played about 9:30. The course isn't difficult by today's standards. It plays as a Recreational/Intermediate rated course. I found the course quite forgiving. In areas where there is underbrush, it's pretty thin.
There were lots of holes to throw rollers, not that you particular needed to, just wide open enough to let em rip.

There were two tees for every hole and the difference between the two tees was often 75-200', enough to completely change up the hole.
# 13 was my favorite hole. It was a blind shot over a small hill through a narrow gap in the trees, 322' from the long, with the fence on the left being OB. Just areal pretty hole, with some challenge!

Cons:

Since the crowds weren't a problem this morning, I guess some of the holes on the back nine were less than interesting, just long wide open throws with minimal trees.
I could see the sometimes overlapping fairways being a small problem on a really busy day.
A reviewer complained about the amount of RHBH favored holes here. That's really not surprising since most of the older courses have a majority of holes with a slight hyzer at the end.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed playing this old historic course. It literally spins a story from where the game of disc golf has evolved. Back in late 70's, few players were throwing 400' and a course like this was a nice challenge to most of them. My, how things have changed!

Rent a Bike at the Beach 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Really solid intermediate/beginner course that has several really cool holes that force shots up hills through tree canopies, over open fields, and through tight trees. Poor drives are not easy to recover. For a course right next to the beach the elevation usage was surprising and added a lot to the fun factor. It is a well-manicured park that had almost no trash making it a really nice place to spend a morning.

Pro-shop on site with drinks, discs, and snacks. Once I read that that this is one of the oldest courses out there we knew we had to play a piece of history which was really cool.

Cons:

Pin location on a few holes wasn't perfectly clear but usually cleared up by a short-walk up the fairway. Could see how on a busy day some of the holes are packed tightly together and could lead to problems, luckily we didn't experience any of that.

Other Thoughts:

We are from Colorado and were staying at a Hotel on Huntington beach (no car), so we just rented cruisers and biked over to the park which was really easy to do. We played in perfect weather on a Monday morning so the course was relatively quite (still a bunch of people out enjoying it!). If you happen to be vacationing in the area I highly recommend bringing a couple discs and having a few hours of fun.

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is one of the best maintained in SoCal. It's usually busy but flows very well. There are a decent variety of shots requiring accurate lines in order to shoot competitive scores.

If you've got an arm this course will really let you open up as quite a few holes are fairly deep. If you start to get out here more often in the mornings you'll likely run into some locals who play a modified super course that sports holes as long as 1000' I think. All the locals I've come across have been really great people.

Also, this course is a designated disc golf area which means you don't run into park goers.

Cons:

Can't really think of any.

Second oldest! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 30, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

It was neat to play the "Second Oldest" disc golf course in the world after playing the oldest a couple days ago! And it has a very different feel indeed. I can see how pro player Paul McBeth honed his distance game here, as this course is very open, playing in a grassy area that has some scattered trees to shape the fairways.

Don't get me wrong - it's not wide open, a handful of holes are more technical with narrow gaps through the trees, but most holes have tree danger much later in the fairways, which means that you can often uncork some distance before you encounter the obstacles. My favorite holes were 3 & 4 as they offered the most trees and elevation on the course and made me "think" about shot execution.

The course is fairly flat, but sits on a bluff, so several holes are affected by this modest slope and the design utilizes it on about 6 holes. But it also affects a couple of the upper holes that have his drop off on their edge (6 & 7) which can make putting hell if you go to the bottom of that slope on your drive/approach.

Dual tee pads are on every hole (long and short) and most holes have multiple pin placements. Also there were 4 or 5 practice baskets with enough room for putts and approaches.

The park itself is beautiful with lush green grass and beautiful mature trees.

The locals were friendly and let me join their group (thank you!). Rich at the pro shop was very welcoming to me, the outta towner.

Cons:

There could have been more shot variety here. I like options off the tee but not when It became apparent very early that this course was going to favor a RHBH throw - and indeed - 10 holes were left-turning. This got quite repetitive (how could it not?). I would feel the same way if there were 10 holes that were RHFH dominant. Also, I felt most of the shots didn't require a lot of thought preparation.

I played the long tees, but the distances seemed (for the most part) about the same - in the 320-370 ft range. I feel that distances need to vary to keep things interesting. I felt that even if I had that kind of consistent distance in my arsenal, that I would just be making the same shot over and over.

Safety factor: Holes are packed tightly together and errant shots easily put people in adjacent fairways in danger of being hit. I nearly hit a group on #8 when I was driving on #6 (it's a RHBH hyzer shot, my shot didn't hyzer and my disc missed those folks around the basket on #8 by inches.). There were many mandos here, but that didn't make things safer (there's just not enough trees to protect people from errant shots).

Other Thoughts:

Okay, this place is supposed to be the second most crowded course in CA (next to Morley Field) There were many people playing when I arrived, but somehow the crowds magically thinned out as I went along (on a Sunday evening). I joined a group on the 5th hole to avoid playing through people all day, but we never had to wait - woohoo!

Just a slight question - why not have the discs in the pro shop handy so that people can actually look through them by hand?

Not bad, not great. California style crowds 2+ years drive by

Pros:

As there are not many courses along the PCH in SoCal, the convenience of this course is nice. Usually a pretty good group of people on the course. Decent variation of shots to take.

Cons:

The crowds at this place are unbearable. In my experience, groups get really salty when you ask to play through, and everyone is in each others way. There are a few unique holes, but nothing punishing or anything amazing. Always annoying when you have to pay to play as well. Parking can be a nightmare.

Other Thoughts:

I guess if you have already chosen to live in SoCal, you are ok with EVERYTHING being overcrowded and overpriced, but being from out of state, it took a lot of the fun out of the course. All in all, it is a solid course, and I continue to play it whenever I'm in town. I prefer the course in long beach.

This is and always has been my home course, this is where I learned and always play DG, I love this course for so many reasons tons of good play, awesome holes, open but closed holes long and short drives, I think this is almost as good as they get.

If your in the area you have to play this course. People I've met from all over always say this is one of the most fun courses they have played and wish they came down more often.

Pros:

- Diversity of shots (uphill right to left, tight tunnel, elevated baskets, baskets on steep hills)
- Changes in elevation
- Manager, Rich, is cool as hell
- Pretty surroundings

Cons:

- Busy (at least, compared to Phoenix)
- Limited parking
- Dangerous intersections

Other Thoughts:

The course is DEFINITELY worth the small fee and the possible wait to tee off. Rich, the course manager, was more than friendly and helpful. He made Sara and I feel right at home. Holes 2, 3, and 4 can really put hurt on your scorecard if you roll down the hill. The course requires a variety of different shots to navigate it successfully. One of my new favorite courses.
