It's a 9 hole course dammit!

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Tee signs
- Level concrete tee pads
- Easy to follow course
- Slight elevation
- Hole distance variation
- Great roller course
- Aesthetically Pleasing
- Water hazard without losing discs
- Well maintained
- Bathrooms
- Good for Intermediate players

Cons:

It's a 9 hole course not an 18 hole course. This is one of my pet peeves when designers try to say that adding an extra tee pad makes it 18. It should be listed as 1-9 and say extra tee pads. It feels disingenuous to say otherwise, feels like false advertising and tries to make the course seem better than it is. Please stop doing this! Some of the tee pads are slightly different but for the most part it's just a long and short pad. If I lived close by it would feel weird to always start on "hole 10" but I would play the longer pads they are more interesting than the short pads.

The baskets are all pretty much on the flat open ground with the exception a few. It seems little thought was taken into consideration of how the disc should land once it reaches the hole. I think some different decisions about the basket locations and some of this gets fixed.

Many holes are wide open with only slightly elevation changes to help it out and I feel like the elevation was mismanaged here a little. The vast majority of the challenge of this course is having quick twitch muscles for long BH drives. Other forms of throwing such as FH, Roller, Tomahawk, etc. aren't even thought about in the design.

Bad throws really aren't punished as much as they should or could be. I suppose if you get really unlucky you could land in the creek and OB but for the most part the holes can be played backwards in a sense; drive 300, short upshot and putt or throw a bad throw 150, longer upshot and putt for a par.

I find for the skill level of an advanced player, someone who's been playing a while but not a pro there are way too many tweener holes in the "back 9" which is what I'm basing my rating on mostly. Some of these are par 3 for pros but listed at par 4 for advanced ams who are virtually never going to do anything other than 3 these holes. Kind of goes back to the course doesn't punish bad drives with worse off upshots; every throw is the same.

Other Thoughts:

My rating is based off of the "back 9" long tee pads for the course. I did not play the "front 9" after figuring out what was going on here but I did look at the "front 9" tee pads when I passed by them. This is a pretty good option and the only course in Brigham City that I know of. It has it's flaws but it's also a pleasant walk. I think of the place as a typical city park 9 hole course but with some extra distance off the tee pads. Overall worth a stop but don't go out of your way.

Enjoyable, well maintained course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 8, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful Park and nicely used for the space
- Well manicured
- Good variety in distance
- Excellent Tee pads
- Multiple Tee pads so you can 18, which changes the holes just enough to really enjoy playing 18
- Most are open shots with a few really fun more technical holes
- 17 is the most difficult by far, and really has trees and the creek in play.
- 12 has a good mando to get through
- Bathrooms are always a plus

Cons:

This park can be quite busy and dangerous if played during that time.
- Play should be done in the mornings or evenings to avoid the crowds
- Holes may be a bit boring for some, with only a few that offer some finesse and placement
- Many holes could be unplayable in the busy hours

Other Thoughts:

This was a great course in a nice area. You are unlikely to lose a disc and even if it gets in the stream, it's not deep enough to lose. Biggest thing is to be courteous of other park patrons that are there to enjoy the park as well.

A Bit of Small Town Charm 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Adequate Infrastructure
-All 9 baskets, plus practice basket, are functional. All 18 tee pads are concrete and level.
-Some added convenience perks: Hole 1's tee and 18's basket are close to parking lot and there are public restrooms on-site.

Decent Variety
-The original nine holes are now the "Front 9." Apparently the alternate tee pads were installed a couple years ago, and they constitute the "Back 9" although they play to the same 9 baskets as the front.
-The Front 9 are relatively short holes, and are very easy and beginner friendly. The Back 9 adds length, some OB to worry about, and more challenging lines to execute from the tee.
-Elevation change is utilized well to create some fun tee shots.

Very Well Maintained
-Located in a city park with lush grass and regular mowing schedule.
-This course checks the Nice Box.

Cons:

Boring Greens
-Most of the holes (other than Hole 9/18) have wide open greens. They are mostly flat, very easy to access with your approach, and unlikely to have any serious impediment for your putt once you get inside 30'-45'.
-This problem is exacerbated by re-using the same nine baskets for the Back 9.
-I might be nitpicking here, but the baskets seem to be about 8"-12" shorter than normal. I felt like I was putting downward all round, even though most greens are flat. This isn't a major problem but it is a bit odd.

Busy
-Multiple people warned me about how crowded this multi-purpose park gets on weeknights and weekend afternoons. I was able to avoid most of the crowds by arriving at 7:30 on a Sunday morning, but even that early there were people out walking the park and playing tennis. Some of the holes would become unplayable if a sand volleyball game and picnic is going on.
-I did have a slightly awkward exchange with a homeless guy and a couple tweakers near the Hole 1 tee, likely because of how early I got there. Just something to keep in mind if that bothers you.

Other Thoughts:

The Back 9 has a bunch of tweener holes that power throwers would consider a Par 3 and noodle arms would consider a Par 4. The course designer seems to have split the difference, and called half of the tweeners 3s and half 4s.

The overall course par of 57 seems pretty generous. I'm a low MA2/high MA3 level player and I could probably get to -6 or -7 if I played here a few more times.

Speaking of tweeners, I had to mull over this course rating for a couple days before writing my review. An 18 hole course that is well maintained with some fun tee shots is typically at least a 3.0 in my book. However, John Adams' wide open greens, used twice each, really does make the round a lot less enjoyable. That plus the imminent threat of holes being unplayable when the park is busy makes this a 2.5* course for me.

Much improved 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pretty area, recently upgraded and renovated, great tee pads, decent baskets, putting basket, a couple very challenging holes, a couple very long shots and short ace runs, good use of what elevation is available

Cons:

Obnoxious angsty teenagers often there to escape the eyes of their parents after school, lots of unaware people hanging out in the middle of fairways at times, picnic tables close to greens, a couple of the new holes are pretty much the same as other holes, just with the baskets having been moved back a bit or to the side.

Other Thoughts:

Back 9 is much harder than front 9. 13 is a doozy.

Nice beginner course in Brigham 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great Beginner Course in Brigham. Very nice park. Tee pads are great long and wide at the end of your throw. Hole 4 and 8 are the only long throws on the course. Some trees in which makes the course fun. Easy Par 3 course. Baskets are in great shape and so are the tee pads.

Lots of short shots with some trees that come into play.
Funniest holes 6,7,8 trees are in play.
Hole 7 right hand side arm or a very under stable disc. I used a valkyrie, laced the hole 4 times.

Little bit of elevation change in which I like as well.

Cons:

There was distance markings on the tee pads but looks like they have worn off. Bring a score sheet if you would like to know the distance of the hole when playing. I would recommend that. Map is also helpful. On the map hole 1 and 2 should be flipped around and they do criss cross each other.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course to get your throwing arm warmed up and to work on so new disc. In the summer time there might be a lot of people walking around, remember it is a park for everyone. I just played it in the fall on a sunday not to much traffic.

I recommend playing this course. It's not to difficult.
I rate this course around 2.75 will play again.

Pros:

- Concrete Tee Pads
- Baskets catch well and are in good shape
- Good for a quick play
- Play ground and bathrooms right next to Tee #1 & Basket #9
- Holes 1-2 & 9 give you some elevation change
- Holes 6 & 7 are moderately wooded
- Holes 5 & 8 have trees you need to throw around

Cons:

- Holes 1 & 2 cross each other
- No Tee signs
- Holes 1-4 are all open shots
- There is a river but it will only come into play if you really overshoot baskets on #1,5 & 6

Other Thoughts:

I play this course when I'm traveling from Salt Lake to Idaho. It's not hard to get to off the freeway. It's a quick play to stretch the legs and let the kids rub around the playground.

Why all the hate? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

John Adams is a small park in the middle of Brigham City. It has restrooms, a picnic pavilion, a fire pit and grill, a playground, a sand volleyball court, and lighted tennis courts. In the middle of all this is the meandering Box Elder Creek which winds right through the middle of the park. There are two parking lots for the park one on the north at N 500 E and one on the south at N 500 E, the park prevents the road from going through. Unfortunately, hole 1 is not located near either parking lot. Instead it is found on the east side of the park along N 600 E, with only street parking. Hole 1 and 2 play down a slope into the park. As others have mentioned, most of the holes are short, with only one hole over 400 feet and most fewer than 300 feet. There is some possibility of water hazard from overthrows on holes 1, 2, 5, and 6 but for the most part the creek is out of play other than for pretty scenery. This seems to be a perfectly reasonable recreational course, I don't know if it's changed from previous reviews but it's not bad.

Cons:

Holes 1 and 2. As The Grim mentioned there is a definite problem here, the flow is just bad. I don't know if he's right about the fairway cross or the maps right about which pad is which, but having to walk up to hole 2 after 1 is still a bad design. I think my suggestion would be to have Hole 1 play from Hole 2's tee, from the map, to Hole 1's basket and then adding a tee down by Basket 1 that plays a nice hyzer along the creek to Basket 2, if that all makes sense, in fact that's what we ended up playing after a bit because we didn't want to walk back up the hill.

Hole 9. This is sort of a blind shot around the restroom building back up to the road and the teepads.

Short Holes. Some of the holes are a little short, but not unreasonably so. Both of the under 200 holes have some slight uphill to compensate for the shorter distance. There are no long bombers here to be sure, but the distances aren't unreasonable.

Multi-Use Park. As with all multi-use parks, there are the potential of other park users rendering the course unplayable. I wish all DG course were DG exclusive, but it simply isn't going to happen. Please, represent the sport, be courteous to others, and serve as ambassadors to the game, if others our on the course try to get them to play if possible, or simply skip.

Navigation. There are no signs, and the writing on the pads is really faded, making navigation difficult without a map. With a map the park is small enough to find the pads. The signage is perhaps the biggest con of this course, I would like to see actual signs marking holes and maybe an intro sign on N 600 E marking the course. Also, ideally you would want warning signs posted around the course for other park users. With better signage, I could see rating this course a 3.5.

Other Thoughts:

I don't know why all the hate on this course, it seems to me to be a perfectly reasonable recreational/beginner friendly/family and youth friendly course. It could use better signage for sure, but the holes themselves are perfectly fine. Not every course needs a 500 foot par 3 to be a good course. This course should serve as a good introduction to the game and as a very family friendly course, as well as practice on upshots and putts for better players.

Nice for what it is 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good beginner course. Other than a couple of holes with a few trees, a bad shot isn't punished. The creek really doesn't come in to play. Nice concrete tee pads.

Cons:

A couple of really short holes (3 & 9). Holes 1 and 2 cross each other. No tee markers or maps, and from a few of the tee pads there are multiple baskets that "could" be the right one. Only 9 holes, and most are similar enough that 2 laps is a little boring.

Other Thoughts:

Nice for what it is, but not worth the stop if you're passing through. Better off going to Riverpark.

Excellent Beginner Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a great disc golf course for beginners, and a great place to take the family as it has a playground area and restrooms.

Several short holes, some elevation, a few decent length holes, and good use of trees to require a variety of shots.

Good Tee pads.

Cons:

The layout of the first two holes really struggles with crossing fairways and a significant walk to the number 2 teepad. Hole number 9 is short and fun, but is a blind shot right by the #1 tee shot and area where other park users pedestrians might be.

No signage, and hard to figure out where to go your first time if you don't have someone to follow.

Other Thoughts:

Great place to play a quick round or two.

The Course Of My Dreams 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

I've always wanted to play a course that could be parred with just a putter, and this is it!

It's actually quite a nice little park with a fun, yet arguably overly easy, course through it. They do make good use of the hills and trees to try to toughen it up a bit, but let's face it, it's still just a beginner's course, and that's ok.

The tee pads are good, so props to the locals who put them in. There are bathrooms and running water which is always a bonus.

Take a moment to enjoy the beautiful area, the picturesque mountains and the burned out building by hole 4/tee pad 5. Absolutely stunning.

Cons:

The map on here is incorrect for holes 1 and 2. They actually cross each other, which is a big fail in course design. Hole 1 starts by the restrooms. Plus you throw hole 1 then have to walk all the way back up the little hill and throw 2. It's just not good form.

Ok, now that we have that crying moment taken care of...

Aside from the somewhat wonkie (yes, I used the word wonkie, I'm cool like that) design of the course and no signage the only other con is really the length of the holes. Hole 4 is really the only one that is driver-worthy, unless you are trying out some different throws.

Other Thoughts:

Look, not all courses need to be world-class to be fun. It's short, so take the opportunity to bust out some different throws or actually drive with your putter for a change. It was hilarious to see some guys throwing discs like softballs on hole 3!

An all-putter, tommies only or a rollers only round (yes, I'm aware of the "how do you roll a put into the basket" argument, deal with it somehow) or even frolfing, you know, with an actual frisbee, would be fun to play here.

Great Beginners Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice easy course to play. All baskets are easy to spot. Park is pretty open and not too crowded with people. The concrete tee pads are super nice having. I played an easy round in about 30 minutes and the park was empty. There is a river with water always running fast. This comes into play on hole #1, #5, and #6. If you throw a heavy disc plan on wading in after it. I thought my disc would be swept away but I guess I was lucky. It is a fairly open course but there are some trees to offer fun obstacles on most of the holes.

Cons:

There was never a super difficult shot which is why this would be great for beginners. None of the holes are super long.
I hate hate hate when there are not clear signs to mark the course. For example, even though I had played the course before, I was confused by the first hole. The map is incorrect. The tee pad for holes one and two are switched. So hole number one is actually closer to the bathrooms. There is a sign at the first tee pad that shows a few of the rules of disc golf.

Also something that bugs me about this course is that after you play hole one, they make you walk all the way back to where you just threw from and throw down the hill again for hole two. To avoid feeling like I was getting exercise and not having fun, play from hole one back to hole 9, by the bathrooms.

Other Thoughts:

The course does use what little elevation change there is to its advantage. On hole number 8, the concrete pad is clear on top of the hill as you walk around the tennis courts. When I played the first time, I didn't know this and we just started from next to the tennis courts. This made us lose out on playing a harder hole.

Overall its a fun short course that you can play if you have a few extra minutes and you are in the area. It's pretty much all grassy area you play on so for me wearing work clothes for a quick game works well.

Best beginner course in UT 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 29, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a great beginner course - and it looks like it is designed with the beginner in mind. The tees are all concrete. The holes have very few obstacles (there are small elevation changes). And each hole has 1-2 extra strokes added to par (meaning they have 350' par 5 - in an open field shooting down hill). I play all the holes at par 3 and was 8 under on my second game. Not a ton of challenge, but I took my wife and kids up and they really enjoyed it.

Cons:

The biggest con is that there is not a lot of challenge in this course for the pros for the same reason that this is a beginners course.

Other Thoughts:

Here is the best advice: if you are in the Northern UT area and are a beginner or are introducing someone to the sport, take them to this park, if you are a pro, make the drive 1/2 hour south to Riverpark and skip it.

Pros:

Well we switched up holes and now its in good shape. We also got new concrete pads and made the holes a lot more challenging. Its was first a course for beginners, and i guess if you are Barry Schultz like who you say you are then i guess its still a family course. We do not have signs up at holes but are working on it. And we have plenty courses nearby like, Wolf Mountain, Snow Basin, Riverpark, Logan but probably dont want to go there if you think Brigham is bad. We had doubles going for awhile but it just kept getting smaller so we just quit. And no its not because of the course. You are one hundred percent right about the tee pads being fifty feet long, shows you how much that course gets played by legit players right? We took the dirt that we dug up for the tee pads and put in place of the fifty foot seven forty seven runways, so maybe we might get some grass going on, but who knows, Brigham City waters that park like water is going out of style so it should be good, So all and all it has gotten a lot better. Im a local and at one time i got sick of the course, but now i take every chance to play it.

Cons:

Swamp on hole four in the summer, Brigham needs to water somewhere else besides right there. Ummm the city guys need to quit Bajaing through the course especially when the grass is really wet.

Its a great course, Us locals spent a lot of time in it the last year or so, so go check it out.

Glad I don't live in Brigham City 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was very disappointed going to this course. I saw on this site that it had a 3 disc rating, which is horribly misleading. If this is a 3 disc course, I need to go back and rerate every other course I've ever played on. I've played on maybe 15 courses and this is definitely the worst one. I'm sure there are worse courses out there, but I haven't found one yet.

Pros- Only course for miles around so the locals are stuck with it. There are bathrooms nearby, but I didn't go in so I don't know how clean they are. The course does make good use of the entire (very small) park (except it failed to use its main feature well, a creek running right through it. Not in play on a single hole.) Oh, was that supposed to be in the Con column? It also makes good use of its very limited elevation changes. There are two holes where you tee off down a 15 foot hill and one hole where you play up it.

Cons:

The parking lot is by the third basket, rather than the ninth/first tee. There was only 1 sign on the nine holes. It said "290 feet, Par 5.) The hole was indeed about 290 feet...wide open....like nearly every other hole on this short, wide open course. There were no tees. The only way you know where to tee off is because there is a splotch of bare dirt on an anotherwise completely grass covered park. Sometimes those dirt splotches are 50 feet long, so it is tough to know exactly where to throw from. It is also supremely irritating to have no idea how far any of the holes are. Other users of this park have no idea what disc golf is or that there is a course here. (Again, the signs would help.) I had two people walk from the basket directly toward the group of us standing on the tee while we attempted to get them out of the way so we could throw. Near the basket, there was a father encouraging his young children to stand there while we were playing down saying (I kid you not) "keep playing...don't let them chase you away." Never mind that we were throwing sharp discs at high speed toward his young children. The portajohns in the parking lot (as opposed to the restrooms near the first tee) were nasty, even by disc golf course standards. No sign of alternate tees mentioned by other review. It was hard enough to find the regular ones.
