Johnny Roberts DGC is one of the oldest and most popular courses in all of Colorado, and for good reason. The course is all par 3's and accomodates all skill levels. This is a great course for beginners and more experienced players. Even for my mediocre game I was throwing mainly putters and mids on almost every hole. Which is awesome. I love courses like this and there needs to continue to be courses like this to truly grow the sport.

The baskets are all newer Mach V's. All in good repair and catch great. There's two pin positions per hole with a single basket in use. There's not usually too much difference between the two positions other than a little extra distance and maybe being scooched left or right a little bit.

Cocrete tees on every hole. These are perfectly done. Ample length and width on each one. All were level and grippy enough. One tee pad per hole. Perfect.

The design here has been revamped a few times throughout the years. The current iteration is more in line with the original concept. Short par 3 golf. The course has a creek that wanders throughout the course and comes into play on about six of the holes, to varying degrees. It's pretty easy to avoid for the most part but it can sneak up on you with a bad shot or being overly aggressive. The course has quite a few trees and lush green grass fairways which I really enjoyed after playing a few of the desert style courses in town. I can definitely see why it's such a popular course for this reason alone.

The course is pretty easy to navigate. Due to it's popularity there's well worn trails from every basket to the next tee. Most are pretty close to each other anyway.

Lots of ace runs out here. Even for those that don't throw very far. Every hole is birdieable to most players too.

The tee signs are solid, Basic but solid. They feature the hole #, a simple hole map that shows both pin positions and distances to each pin placement. They also have the par. Which is pretty simple to remember, being all threes and all.

The park itself was very clean and well maintained. Free to play and open year round.

The course is in a pretty small park so there's a lot of fairways that play very close to each other. You'll want to keep your head on a swivel out here. No fairways cross or play over each other but they're so close that there'll be interference one way or another if playing here.

The course is very, very popular. Expect to encounter backups when playing here. Not going to be a real quick round unless you're here very early I'd assume. I probably could've played this course in less than half the time it actually took due to how busy it was.

The park is full of other park users too. There's some walking paths that can come into play in places. Not a huge deal if you're careful but it is worth noting.

I really wanted to see what all the fuss was over this course and why it was the one I kept hearing about in Denver proper. I'm glad I did and I can certainly see why it's a popular as it is. This is just a damn fun course. I'd play here often if I lived in Denver. And clearly lots of others feel the same way. Not a destination course or anything but well worth a visit if you find yorself nearby. Great old school par 3 course.

A small, busy course with a prototypical rec challenge.

-Amenities: Concrete tees, DGA baskets, tee signs showing multiple pin positions (though the maps weren't super helpful), next tee arrows. I think there was a practice basket as well. There are small rubber circles under the baskets to presumably prevent erosion.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: A short ace race, but with variety. Holes vary from open to wooded to creek crossings to sloped greens to initial gaps. The course can be mostly completed with putters and mids, but stays engaging throughout. The variety of approach-type shots is very good.

-Rec-Friendly: The hallmark of the course. Longest hole is under 300', and it's a series of birdie opportunities and ace runs. I can see why it's packed, because it's perfect for families from beginners to experienced. The fun factor is very high.

-"Friendly": Well-manicured, easy to find your way, hard to lose discs, welcoming environment. Also, there was a very friendly vibe on a Sunday afternoon. I played with another visitor, interacted with several families, and had a small gallery cheer my ace.

Little to speak of.

-Crowds: It was slow going on a Sunday afternoon. Every hole had at least one group on it, with some holes backing up to 3-5 groups.

-Fairway Overlap: There are quite a few holes with adjacent fairways. Plenty of shots are going to bleed over here.

-Scope: Obviously, with nothing over 270', a course will be missing out on some of the possible challenges. I understand why Johnny Roberts receives so many generous reviews--it's legitimately fun to play--but it lacks the kind of gameplay and design present in a top notch course.

I struggle to rate Johnny Roberts. It is a great example of a local course that provides a perfect gateway to disc golf. It's also really fun to play. Initially, it seemed like a sure bet for "Typical," but after writing this review I decided it more fits in the category of Good. It's a different Good than most of my other 3.0s - it's a fun, ace race type of Good - but there's no denying that this is a course any city would be happy to add.

- A great course for those beginning in disc golf.
- Nice clean park and beautiful fairways.
- Definitely a lot of short holes but also a course where a player can recover from mistakes.
- Other players are really nice and makes this a place I want to return to in the future.
- A few of the holes definitely make a player work for their "money shots"

- Not many cons here.
- There are a few holes that do run parallel to each other, so be careful of errant throws.
- Irrigation has caused a few issues in spots. The grass hides some really wet spots. But, I think that is part of the fun of playing a course. You need to learn to play what is in front of you.

I see a lot of comments about the length of the course holes. Anyone who knows the history of the original course and the history behind the name of the park will know there is a reason for this. Johnny Roberts, to many, including myself, was the Godfather of Disc Golf. With the recent redesign of the course.

This is a welcoming course for many. I look forward to getting my kids to play this course so that they can get comfortable and happy with throwing their discs.

Most of the holes on this course have nice layouts. There are a few blind tee shots, a couple holes where a big winding creek comes into play, and a couple of doglegs. Most of the holes have a few trees that serve as obstacles - some are kind of tricky, while others aren't too bad. Each hole has two basket locations, and each tee pad has a helpful nice-looking sign to reference. The grass on this course is well kept. Also, there's some nice landscaping done with each basket location - the baskets are in the middle of a gravel circle, and that circle is outlined by a cement ring.

The biggest issue with this course is that it's real short. Each hole is well under 300 feet, and some are well under 200 feet. Since a lot of the holes are mostly open, it can be easy for players with a somewhat strong arm to have a lot of birdie opportunities, provided they don't overthrow the basket. Some players won't even need to bring a driver to this course. Also, some of the holes are a little too open and straightforward.

Overall, this is a decent course that's in good shape, but unfortunately it's also really short. That makes it more of a beginner-friendly course, but it's a good one to play, not just because it's in good shape, but also because some of the layouts are kind of tricky. You may not have to throw your disc real far, but every now and then you'll encounter an obstacle or two that can make the hole somewhat challenging.

- Due to irrigation there are a lot of muddy spots on the course you can't always see until you step in them

Convenient, well maintained, easy to navigate, challenging but not punishing. Beautiful city park, with light elevation changes. great use of creek flowing through park.

I play this course multiple times every time I visit Denver. I really appreciate this course because it is convenient (in a beautiful park, very easy to access, quick to play), it is challenging with water and light tree coverage throughout, but is not punishing. If you have a bad throw, you will most likely still have a decent line toward the basket. This course is the busiest one I have ever played. Expect to wait in a line to tee off on most of the holes, but the lines move quickly. This course is perfect for beginners and families, as all holes are around 250' or less. I recommend the Johnny Roberts challenge: just use 2 putters to play the entire course. I am still able to birdie most of the holes using only my putters, but it has been great practice in refining my upshots, accuracy and putting abilities. I wish every city had a disc golf course this nice. Anyone who visits this course will see that there is a huge need for more beginner/family friendly 18 hole courses. I bet this course introduces more people to disc golf than any other course in the world. Of the 365+ courses I have played, Johnny Roberts is by far my favorite course to revisit.

Super clean park. Beautiful scenery which is important. Fun hole design. You can play this course with a starter pack. I look forward to playing this course on my yearly trip out to Colorado.

Super busy. This course is always busy but luckily you will not be waiting long to throw as traffic seems to move quickly.

You cannot compare this to some of the epic courses in Colorado, that's not what this is trying to achieve. This course is about getting people in the community to play disc golf and for that it excels 100%. This course is packed with all level of players. It's fun for me to try and Ace run most holes and generally have a good time. It's good old fashioned fun.

Typical cons like hole length, shot variety/shot shaping requirements really don't apply to this course for me as it's a Pitch and Putt course. Great course for beginners to throw a full bag and great course for INT and ADV players to work on shot shaping, fast casual play and 1 disc challenges

Very busy course, even on weekdays.

Best approach and putter practice in Denver's metro area.

Johnny Roberts is a well manicured, diverse, short range course. Perfect for advanced played looking to practice shorter throws and putting. Great for beginners and even children. Can definitely get away with one or two discs for every hole.
Nice practice area close to #1 tee. Good course sign with tournaments, course rules, and map.
Here is a detailed description for each hole:
#1: Plays straight with OB left and a big tree on the right. Nice hole to warm up for the rest of the course.
#2: Plays over the creek on top of the hill. Water play on the right with big tree on the left and smaller foliage closer to the basket on the left.
#3: Straight with little to no guardian trees. Couple small trees on the right, one larger tree close to basket on the left
#4: Plays out of a couple big trees. Main pin position sits behind a group of mature trees. Straight and to the left for the most part.
#5: Plays over the creek once again with the basket lower in elevation compared to the tee. Possibility of going OB left on/past sidewalk and even into the creek.
#6: First "long" hole on the course. Had a few smaller trees along the fairway with creek on the right side. A few small hills in play along the fairway as well.
#7: Another one of the "longer" holes. Mando tree to the right (stay left) with a couple bigger trees closer to the basket.
#8: Tee plays out of some thick trees that line the entire right side of the fairway, blocking off the sidewalk. Main hole sits on top os a small hill with some bigger trees on the left.
#9: Another "longer" hole with a big tree on the left of the fairway. Several bigger trees guarding the basket. Creek runs along the backside with OB sidewalk on the right.
#10: Has big guardian tree right in front of the tee box. Can play the gap in between the branches or go underneath. Basket is straight ahead.
#11: Big tree on left of tee box. Small tree to the right of the basket. Creek in play past the basket on the left side.
#12: Filled with several guardian trees with creek along the entire right side of the fairway. Short and straight with OB sidewalk long.
#13: Slightly uphill with OB sidewalk left and creek down the hill on the right. Basket in between two mature trees straight ahead.
#14: Short and straight "ACE" hole with little to no barriers to the basket. Some pine trees along the left and a big tree behind the pin on the right.
#15: Big guardian trees on either side of the tee. Creek along the far right side with OB sidewalk long past the hole. Several trees along the left side of the fairway.
#16: Short hole with little visibility from the tee. Several trees blocking the easy line. Very "Aceable".
#17: Another "long" hole that plays on top of a small hill. Big trees just off the tee pad to the right with several more along the right side of the fairway.
#18: Last hole with two large pine trees (that have seen their days) on the right side. OB sidewalk on the right and past the basket. A few small hills along the fairway with large tree from #13 on the left.

Several large groups of 5, 6, 7+ players can form on the weekends. (Which is against the rules)
Plenty of adults smoking and drinking adult beverages is regular. (Also against the rules)
As other reviews have noted, can get very busy on weekends.
Basket positions haven't changed since I started playing in December. (Probably because of the winter weather)
Pedestrians frequent the paths, but these are out of bounds anyway so...

Excited to see some basket changes this spring/summer. Great place to relax and learn the game.

-Nice tee areas, there are concrete tees, and signs that show the hole layout effectively. Also, I played this course when there was a couple inches of snow on the ground, so the hooks on the signs were really helpful so I didn't get my bag wet.
-Baskets are good quality, and all except hole 16 or 17 are visible from the tee. The gray color of baskets was hard to see in the snow storm I played in, but that is just a given with the weather conditions.
-From what I could tell, the fairways were nice mowed grass
-Whenever there was a hill to be used, there was a basket on top, nice opportunistic design in that way, also with the creek that runs through the Park, the course plays across and next to the creek several times, which is a cool obstacle
-Navigation is easy, baskets have updated numbers on top, and the layout is very logical and easy to follow
-Definitely a great course to bring a novice friend to, the distances are short, the park feels homey, and the course feels rather professional even though the difficulty is definitely recreational.
-This Park is actual kind of scenic, there are some cool bridges over a river. I played this course with my mom and sister, who were less than thrilled to be out in the cold, but for some cool photos on a bridge they were satisfied.
-As far as I can tell, the locals are super cool out here, we saw a guys shoveling snow off the paths around the park, and he offered to do the tee pads too, so, shout-out to that guy!

-Not as much rough as I would like to see on a short course, I think if you are going to have distances below 300' on the majority of holes, there needs to be some challenge from woods or otherwise.
-This course is just about as good as a under 4000' length course in a pretty wide open park can be, this course is very easy,I I would even argue that it is too easy, I mean I'm all for course where you can go perfect -18 and not be a pro, but come on! I almost got to -18 on a bad knee and 3 inches of snow!
-A couple baskets appear next to other fairways, and if you don't know the course, which I didn't, this is highly confusing

I wrote this review because I wanted to express my opinion about this course, however the conditions I played are not normal, so, take what I say with a grain of salt, because this course is likely a little different without three inches of snow.

If you're used to playing mountain courses or rougher, more natural terrain, get ready to have your mind blown. You'll feel like a pampered PGA golfer entering this course with mowed lawns, impeccable tee boxes, concrete-circle greens and high-quality baskets. Playing this course opened my eyes to the joys of shorter courses and being able to focus on playing precision golf instead of crushing distance shots. It can get crowded so either show up early or be prepared to relax and wait for groups ahead of you. Even intermediate players will snake a few birdies on this course and feel like heros.

If you like longer holes or elevation changes, this course offers none of that. All good though, it's important for your game to play all different types of courses!

Leave your driver in the car. No holes over 300 feet on this course, most are in the 220foot range. Enjoy throwing your mid-ranges and putters (you'll throw your putter off the tee box for some shots) and working on your accuracy.

Usually a cool group of locals frequenting here and I have showed up as a single and joined fun games on two of my visits.

Johnny Roberts is great for piling up birdies and going way under par. There are 18 short holes that would be ideal for new players working on throwing mechanics and shot shaping. The tees are all concrete, with signs and nice baskets. The layout is not hard to follow, and there is a course map next to the practice basket you can reference.

The main perk of the park is fun. An easy course that you can go on a run of 5 or 6 birdies in a row at any point. It was crowded when I played, but everyone was really friendly and courteous. We got there at noon and a lot of people were there playing with more showing up throughout the round. I played with a girl who played almost no disc golf prior to this round. We let about 5 or 6 pairs of people play through, and it still only took us about 90 minutes.

We saw one guy make his first ace on hole 9. I was close to getting one on 15, my Roc jingled the right side of the chains off the tee. Shooting in the mid 40's or even into the 30's is not impossible. My first round was a -9 (45), bogey free. I would love to get out there and take a few more cracks at it.

I won't give a hole by hole breakdown, but I can tell you the park is very pretty and well maintained. There is a creek in play around a few holes. The terrain is mostly flat, with a slight elevation change here and there. The lines will require a slight bend to the left or right at times but no extreme turns to make hard corners or doglegs. The putter challenge is put forward on a sign at the first hole, but I did throw a driver on one or two holes. It is not out of the question to play this course with one disc and still wind up with a terrific score.

One thing I loved was the mountain weather. It was 96 degrees when we got on the course around noon. I am used to midwestern and southern summers, where mid 90's means I'm drenched in sweat by hole 3. The low humidity kept it quite comfortable, and as long as you have sunscreen it is not bad at all.

Extremely compact area hosting a popular course leads to waiting on the tee for other groups to finish in front of you. It really isn't too bad since all of the holes are so short.

The lack of challenge will not be satisfying for very long to an established player. Fun for a birdie fest at least once, but no holes where you have to throw a technical shot or make a tough approach to get pars.

I would have liked to play the old layout, just to see what a longer and tougher course looked like in this park. It still has some risk of throwing into groups of people on adjacent holes, but it isn't bad considering how tight some of the fairways are.

My favorite holes on the course were 2, 5, and 12. The water being in play and a little elevation drop on 2 and 5 are nice elements, and 12 is one of the tighter fairway lines with the trees and water on the right side.

The scores on the course page average 48 with 375 rounds recorded now, so it is clear that most people will get a good score here. 9 under par is nice, but I would have liked to get double digits into the negative. All of the holes I didn't make birdies, I had a chance at it. A near ace is always fun as well, and that is a frequent opportunity here.

If you can't enjoy a beginner level course, or you want to play a course with a low level of traffic, this one is not for you. If you want to get a fast, fun, low stress round then check it out if you're anywhere near by. Next time I am going to accept the putter challenge, to add a bit of challenge.

Too well known. Arrive early or get stuck behind doubles.

I was fortunate enough to be located a 2 minute walk from this course on a recent stay in Denver (OK, well, Arvada, but it was our Denver vacation), and played this course twice, once each morning for the days we were there.
It was a really fun play through.
The course is really immaculately maintained.
The signage is all really clear.
Multiple pin placements for each hole.
The thing I like the best about this course is that it does so much with the property it's on. The holes are very short, but they do a lovely job integrating the trees, creeks, and surrounding sidewalks to create some challenges.
No doubt this is a beginner course, and more advanced players should go in expecting to birdie every hole and ace-run pretty much every hole. But for the course size, the holes are fun and diverse.
If you're in town and want a nice little disc golf course in a lovely neighborhood park without traveling too far out of the Denver burbs, this is a great course. You can get a full round in in about 45 min - an hour and then go enjoy the rest of the day in Denver.

The holes are all very short. There really is not an opportunity to open it up and throw big here. You could probably play this entire course with a putter (especially true for advanced players).
I played early AM in December, so the park was not crowded when I played it. However, driving past in the afternoon, it looked crowded. I could see it getting pretty packed during peak hours, and given how close everything is, I could see there being problems with dog walkers and other folks getting in the way.
Some of the holes are a bit repetitive towards the end of the course. I forget exact numbers, but once you get into around 13-16, you're throwing some very similar holes.

If you get creative, I think you could make some interesting new holes out of the already existing teepads and baskets. I had a bit of extra time after playing one of my rounds, and messed around making a few longer holes by mismatching teepads and baskets. So, I think I shot from Teepad 14 to Basket 16, and Teepad 17 to Basket 18, and made a few slightly longer holes that way for an added challenge.
Definitely check out this course if you're in the area, have a minute to kill, and don't mind shorter holes. But if your definition of a good disc golf course includes big par 5's and long distance shots, I'd skip this one, b/c there's not much there for you.

-This course is VERY easy for experienced players and still easy for beginners
-It is in a very nice park with great scenery
-Good signage posted around the course for each hole

-Not totally clear where the next hole was after a few (the park was busy so i was able to follow a couple guys to find my way around)
-too easy with top distance on the holes being around 300 feet.

This was the quickest 18 holes i have ever played and every single hole is birdie-able. There is nothing difficult about this course but is still fun to practice on.

I don't normally put a preface before my review, since it isn't a "Pro" but this is the first thing you read, and I wanted to explain where I'm coming from on this one - Johnny Roberts is designed to be a pitch-'n'-putt ace run kind of place. It's not the kind of course where you're going to find long bombers, to wit, they even have the Johnny Roberts Challenge, which is using just a putter on the whole course. That said, I've tried to rate it based on what it is, not what it isn't.

+ Great baskets, tees, and signage

+ Navigates like a breeze, plays a loop

+ Situated on some impeccably manicured land, super low chance of losing a disc here

+ Decent amount of parking and port-o-johns on site

+ Great for beginners, family-friendly, a place to hone your short game and bump up your number of birdies/aces

+ Multiple pins

- Cramped; has serious potential for crossing fairways

- Crowded; not only w/ other players but other park patrons - with the short hole setup it can get a little dodgy

- No teeside benches, not many trash cans around either

- Dearth of variety in distances and shots required, overall challenge is on the low side, even w/ putters only

I'd recommend Johnny Roberts to anyone at least to play once for the experience. The Putter-Only challenge adds some flavor to the round, I'd highly suggest trying it out, plus, it's not like you really need those mids here, much less drivers - lighten the bag up for this one.

It was a little on the crowded side when I played, but I didn't have much issue with it. It definitely isn't going to let you air anything out so if you're in love with long bombers, check that at the parking lot or try elsewhere. It's just a fun, short course that stands out as a novelty. Destination-worthy? I don't know. It's definitely unique and can be a lot of fun if you know what you're in for. Would I play it again? Totally. It's a nice complement to Bird's Nest nearby where you can really air your arm out.

I would definitely recommend this course to others, particularly those just beginning

-Really well made signs for each hole listing par, distance for both A and B pin locations, and a hook to hang your bag or whatnot from.
-scenic park with a Ralston Creek running through it. Throws into the water are usually easily retrievable.
-Short distances perfect for beginners, your pregnant wife, and practicing your putting. Take the Johnny Roberts challenge and use putters only!
-There's a disc golf store just west of the park on Ralston called #9908. The owner is a cool dude, but prices are a little high.

-This course gets BUSY! Expect to have groups ahead and behind you and the other 15 holes if you go on the weekend or nearly any other time.
-It takes a long time for snow to melt in the winter due to the constant shade from big park like trees. Can be icy in winter.

-Leave your speed 14 in the car. You don't need anything faster than a speed 4 Putt and Approach disc. It even says on the rules sign putters only. If you have a good short game you can bag some really great scores here. If you have a pregnant wife she will still be able to par here.
