Greatness could be had 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 19, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ DISCatchers. They are a bit old with a newer 1 or 2 mixed in there but they are mostly older DISCatchers with not as many chains and are slightly rusty. That being said, I had no issue with these baskets catching like they should.

+ Nice full color teesigns with all the alternate pin positions shown with distances and routes to take.

+ Parking by the tons. Just a lot of parking.

+ Bathrooms are placed throughout the property. Once I started playing, I didn't really notice them being around but there are a few facilities throughout the property.

+ Next tee markers are on the trees directing you where to go. I didn't have to consult uDisc too often to figure out where to go next. The signs are just little arrows on some trees. Takes you a bit to figure them out but once you do it's not too bad.

+ Diversity is king here. This course makes you use a lot of different shots and discs. You need to bring you full bag of tricks here to score well. I threw just about every shot except for a roller here.

+ Hole 8 is the signature hole to me but there are plenty of great holes here. Hole 8 is just a fun downhill shot over a little valley. Its a downhill tunnel and just a breeze to throw.

+ The course brings a lot of elements into play here. You will have wide open bombs, short technical par 3's, shots over water, uphill and downhill shots, shots wide open to the elements and others that are completely shielded. You kind of have a lot of different shots you need to know how to throw to be able to score well here. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of variety of this course and it is probably this courses biggest positive it has.

Cons:

- Natural teepads. This is the biggest downfall of this course and takes it down half a point. When the pads are dry they aren't too terrible but these will get muddy with rain. They also aren't all that flat and some have roots coming up thru them. You can usually find a good place to throw off of. The tees can also get a bit slick because there are a lot of pine needles on the course and on some pads. Some teepads also had some stakes pounded into the ground at the front of the teepad with a rope stretched between them to mark where the teepad is. Would be nice to see this on all of the tees but its not a big deal.

- Hole 16 was missing a teesign. You could still tell where the teebox is if you have uDisc and if not you just have to look around for the worn down spot that indicates a teepad.

- The teesigns are nice but don't help as much as they could. They show you the different pin placements and the distances and some natural features but they don't tell you which pin position the hole is in and it seems like the distances are a bit off. They still had the old teesigns in the area and the distances on the old and the new didn't match up. Something just seemed a bit off.

- Some holes seem to play directly on top of some of the camping sites. I think I counted 3 holes where you were teeing off and or holing out way to close to campsites. It wasn't an issue when I played but I could see this being an issue in the summer months.

- Some holes had mandos listed on the teesigns but did not have them marked on the course.

Other Thoughts:

To get into the park it is now $3 a person. I really enjoyed playing this course and would go back if I am in the area. I would prefer to play Ford Park but that is only because it has concrete teepads. If this course had concrete tees then it wouldn't even be close. This course is so close to being a 4.0+. There needs to be concrete tees here and the simple edition of marking what position the pin is in would make this course so much better.

I really enjoyed my time here. The course started and finished great and every hole has something to offer. This course is the style of course that I love and prefer to play. Its wooded, but not too wooded. Its got a good bit of length but not too much. The par 3's are good par 3's the 4's seem like good 4's, not too many if any par 3.5's. The one par 5 is a bit shorter but its not bad. If you 5 it you will probably feel bad but a 4 feels pretty ok. I enjoyed the variety of this course and what it has to offer. I don't think you need to travel out of your way to play this course but if you are in the area then it should go to the top of your list of courses to play. This is a better course then the others in the Shreveport area but it's not a must play, if there were concrete tees then this might turn into a must play or definitely play here first kind of course.

Birthday Trip! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 25, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Technically diverse course
-Multiple pin locations
-Good use of tree marking to show path to next hole
-Bathrooms were usually nearby if needed

Cons:

-No welcome sign
-Length only on tee signs
-No designation of current pin location
-Dirt tee boxes
-There is some water in play that will eat disks
-Some holes dangerously close to campers and day users.
-Some tee sign lengths were incorrect

Other Thoughts:

This course is located in the middle of the park. It took us a while to find the first tee, and we were confused on whether the lengths at the tee meant there were two tee boxes or two pin locations. We quickly realized it signified multiple pin locations. I though having pin placement flexibility was good, but it was hard to know which was in play with no tee sign other than length. Navigation between holes is greatly helped by arrows placed on trees throughout the course. There were some good holes, but there were also some bad ones. I personally did not like the 888 ft hole 7. I did like being able to launch a drive without worry of being too long, but it seemed silly to have absolutely nothing in the way that had to be worked around. I was also confused on where the goal was. I did not realize the white posts marked where the hole finished in the woods (FYI). I did like the finish of the hole, but the length seemed to be just something to make long bombers happy. Hole 8 is a safety concern. There were campers near the basket placement that had to move for us to safely finish the hole. We drove expecting the hole to finish left, but it was tucked into the woods to the right. (Very confusing)

I played this course to check Louisiana off my list of states played. It was an OK course, but could use some tee boxes and improved signage to really move up a level.

Great Disc Golf close to I-20 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 22, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a beautiful state park on the shore of an impoundment about 20 minutes south of I-20 to the east of Shreveport, Louisiana. The course winds through open, moderately wooded and forest areas around the lake. The first five holes stick close to the lake shore in a moderately wooded area with hole 4 having a short water carry. Hole 5 is followed by a tunnel shot and then two holes that go through a large open area. Hole 9 follows a power line right of way with significant elevation change (first down and then up if the basket is in the long position). Holes 10-14 go through forest with several of the holes following old roads. The last four holes bring you back out into the moderately wooded areas around the lake shore with the last three having the lake to the right.

When I played, the lake had been drawn down, so I did not get to experience any danger of a lost disc, but it appears that this danger is pretty low, even on the hole with the water carry.

This course is only moderately technical but it still offers a lot of challenge and I found it to be a fun course to play. It starts at parking lot by the lake and finishes at a pavilion near that parking lot. The transitions from forest to moderately wooded areas keep the course from being only technical and give the opportunity to use those distance drivers occasionally.

The Pavilion has bathrooms and is a good place to rest and enjoy refreshments after the round.

There is a good mix of hole difficulty with only a few holes that don't require some amount of shot shaping. In comparison to Lake Claiborne, one of the three State Park courses in North Louisiana, this course is more open, with a little more involvement of the lake as a hazard.

It is only $2 per person to play all day. There are camping and cabins on site with at least one of the cabins right on the course.

Cons:

Navigation is not all that straightforward. The course needs better signage. In some cases, the signs are there and we had no problem finding our way from 9 to 10 despite a bit of a walk between those holes. But other holes, such as 16, weren't as easy to find, even with one member of our group having played before. We also had to scout ahead to find the basket on several holes because there was no meaningful tee sign and no way to determine what basket position was in use.

There is precious little elevation on this course - another distinction from Lake Claiborne. The only holes with any elevation were 9 and 16, and even on those holes, the elevation change was not much of a factor.

Holes 7 and 8 just don't fit all that well with the rest of the course IMO. Hole 7 is a very long hole that is wide open for the first two throws. Just throw as far as you can twice before you throw into the woods toward the basket. Hole 8 has a mando and isn't as wide open, but it also sticks out from the rest of the course and I think, along with 7, it doesn't live up to the challenge and fun standard of the rest of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Before the course at Lake Claiborne was built, this course had the highest course rating in Louisiana and it is apparent to me that it certainly deserved that distinction. This is a course that left me wanting to play it again.

This is also a course, along with Lake Claiborne, that should be considered by anyone traveling through Louisiana on I-20 and looking to play disc golf. It is well worth the effort and is the quickest detour from that route of any of the State Park courses in North Louisiana.

Very Good State Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 17, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It is great to see a Disc Golf Course in a state park. It is $2 to get in for the day, but that is a minor expense for playing a nice course. Be sure to ask for the map/scorecard when you check in.

The course winds through several areas of mature forest. Most holes are in the trees and require a careful drive, but a couple are quite open.

Hole 4 requires a drive across a short neck of the lake, but the carry is short. Holes 5, 16, 17 and 18 play along the edge of the lake, but it isn't really in play.

About half of the wooded holes are clean enough that a errant tee shot will still give you a fair look at the basket. But others are very thick along the edges, and a drive fading into the edge will leave you with a tough second shot.

Hole 7 is an 888 foot shot across an open grass field. The basket is tucked about 100' back in to the woods, and there are black-and-white painted posts on either side of the gap to give you a hint of where to drive. Hole 8 comes back across the same field, so these two holes are your opportunity to air it out.

Hole 9 is a tight drive down a power line clearing, with thick brush on either side of the fairway. It is narrow, and difficult not to fade your drive(s) into the edge.

Hole 16 is a blind drive over a rise with the basket tucked out of sight to the left. Hole 18 is a nice finishing hole that returns you to the parking area.

There is a huge parking lot near the Hole 1 tee, a couple of restrooms along the way, and plenty of trash cans. Tee signs are basic, giving hole number and distance. Tee pads are natural, which fits in well in this environment.

Most holes have a couple of basket positions, and in some cases you'll need to walk up to see the basket. A few holes offer a two tee positions.

Cons:

Tee signs are very basic, with no hole diagram. I always appreciate a map, especially when I'm only going to have a chance to play a course once or twice.

A few of the tee pads were a bit rutted out, and some were a little muddy and slick.

There is little elevation on the course, so the challenge is limited to missing the trees.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a very nice park course. We camped here a few nights and enjoyed both this course and the ones at Lake Claiborne.

beautiful location 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 22, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gorgeous location next to Lake Bistineau
Nice mix of holes, short, long, open, tunnel
Well groomed
Disccatcher baskets with dual locations

Cons:

Poor signage; hard to determine basket location
Must have map; course mixed with hiking trails
Course is far from any major city.
Dirt tee-boxes

Other Thoughts:

The first time I played this course, was after a daylong rain, so all the teeboxes were muddy, and the lake was high. Had to find the basket on several holes then walk back to tee off, as there is no sign telling you where basket is, nor which pin placement is being used.
Maybe bring a boat and go fishing after play. The lake is supposed to be excellent for fishing.

I played it again recently, and the lake had been drained, so no real water hazards. Tee boxes, though dirt, were really not bad when they were dry. Really no one else out there. I think if i played this regularly, it would be one of my favorites.

Bistineau: A beast fo' sho' 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 20, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lake Bistineau DGC is an excellent course located next to a very cool lake. There are plenty of trees to negotiate on holes that cover a full range of left/right shots at varying distances. The lake is near the course in places, but only once did I throw near the water. It looked to be lower than normal perhaps. There are dual pin placements on many holes, and a few of the longest holes offer short tees if you don't feel up to those 800 footers. Tee boxes were natural and generally nice and level. All tees had numbered posts with distance to both pin positions. Each of the baskets was in decent condition. There are benches, tables, and trash cans placed all through the course. Scorecards with a map are available at the park entrance.

Cons:

A more detailed map would have helped in negotiating the course. The layout had some long walks between holes that weren't well marked. I never played here before, so baskets that were not visible from the tee pads gave me some trouble, also. Some of the grassy tees had pine needles slightly compromising the footing. Bug spray may be a good idea. There were plumes of gnats around the last three holes, and we were warned about some kind of mites at the park entrance.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed this course very much, and would love to play it again. Definitely on my list of favorites. Some upgrades with maps, signage, and maybe concrete tee pads would boost my rating, but it is a great time all the same. Will test your skills in accuracy, and power. Birdies are possible, but you got to be on your game to shoot a low score on this beast.

Well worth the Drive 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I had heard this was a good course from those that have played it, I was NOT disappointed.
1st, only $1 to play all day, sweet. They even gave me a map of the course (thank goodness)

The course has several very pretty shot though classic cypress trees covered in moss along with lots of very tall pine trees.
There are only a few short must get birdie holes. Many of the holes were longer drive, upshot holes for me. (my max distance is 350)
A few of the holes were great tunnel shots.

Cons:

Not the greatest tee signs. At least they were all marked.
Non existence tee pads. Luckily it was dry the day I played so no mud.
The course did have a mando, I am not a fan of those. (and yes I missed it)
The longest hole on the course was over a large field with no trees. Land a good drive on the left so you can make your 2nd shot.

Other Thoughts:

I literally drove 233 miles to play this course (it was 120 miles out of the way of where I was going overall)

In my opinion it was well worth it. The course flows pretty good and was a very pretty course to play.

Even though I was tired and it was hot, I managed to shoot a 58 and was happy with it.

I WILL be playing here again the next time I can swing it.

Pros:

Well Groomed, Played in, Great Parking, GREAT views, Nice clear baskets, well thought out and all in all, a great experience! A few open fields for hucking and some tight spots for controlled throws. Some holes have more than one basket or tee. The ranger has maps some times, so ask when you pay for parking. If not, don't worry its not that had to navigate! #7 basket is at the end of the filed tucked in the woods where the two white poles are!

Cons:

Hole 3 was hard to find the tee, I think the sign is missing and hole 7 is hard to find the basket because it is tucked away at the end of the field!

Other Thoughts:

This is a wonderful course! It has everything you want, open fields to just huck, and areas where you need your control! There are some shots near the water so be careful! You have the option to camp there if you want, and It would be a great way to spend a whole day there! I could be muddy in areas (hole one two and three maybe) So bring some boots, but most of the time I bet its fine. There are bathrooms and trash cans along the course as well!

multiple hole locations
good mix of left/righty shots
nice water shots
Only $1 per person to play all day!

Cons:

Map was TERRIBLE
park rangers seem to not even acknowledge the disc golf course here

construction on holes 15-18 should be done by end of August 2012 but they failed to tell me this on the way in. I played them anyway.
Some holes were in long and some were in short so most of the time you are teeing off blind

natural tees were not in the best condition

Other Thoughts:

The map was horrendous. Very hard to find hole 16 and I had played the course a few times 2 years before. Map needs to be revised to include short and long position. It seemed to only have the long position on the map and sometimes the short position would be the opposite direction. Park rangers don't care about disc golf. They didn't even know the State Championship was going to be hosted here in a little over a month. Great long course that is tournament material.

Classic Louisiana Beauty + Disc Golf = A GOOD TIME 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is embedded in sheer Louisiana Beauty! Enjoy a brisk walk through old cypress trees hung with spanish moss. Hear the wind pass through the tall pines and live oaks.
This course offers a challenge to newcomers and veteran disc golfers alike.
A course map is available at the park enterance.
The course is well marked with bright blue markers on every hole indicating two seperate pin distances (long and short). Some holes offer alternative tee pads (closer to the pin).
The course design is well done, offering a varation of required shots. The design of the course gives you a great overview of the state park and chances to enjoy the lovely scenes of this great landscape. I especially enjoyed on serveral holes being forced out of my natural bent. For instance, several opening drives required a hyzer shot when I typically would have felt more comfortable with an anhyzer. The draped spanish moss creates haunting windows of opportunity, that if missed create havoc for your next shot. The wooded holes on the course are punishers. Not only are they very narrow (10 -30 feet tunnels), they are long! Several wooded holes played 200 - 500 feet long. Any wayward drives carved their way into dense woods that punished you into a dropped stroke just to get back in the fairway. Pin placements were mostly tucked into trees that required laser accuracy to hit the long putts, or nice approach shots to have chance at par.
Not a great deal of water on the course (good for beginners).
Several spots to take a break on a bench or use the restrooms.
Highly recommended!

Cons:

One major drawback to this course is the lack of concrete tee pads. I never realized what a difference having permanent tee pads made until playing this course (which has elementary dirt pads) in the rain. My footing was shaky and really hindered my power throws and drives.
The course had standing water on several holes after moderate rain fall the days before playing the course.

Other Thoughts:

For good or bad (you chose), several holes required a long walk from basket to next tee pad (some felt like 200-300 yards). BE SURE TO GRAB A MAP before heading out to #1.
Beatiful course. Great for disc golf and nature hikes!

Pros:

Very secluded. Good variety of types of holes. Heavily wooded and long. Some shaded holes, as most of course is in the woods. Map at office where you pay your dollar fee. No crossing holes and not many golfers during the week. Alt tees have a large difference in length, one is over 200 feet in difference, making some of the alt Ts a different shot. An over the water shot of 350 ft. with elevation help it is very possible to pull it off, even for some rec players like myself. Some interesting pin placements add to challenge as well. Many tables and benches to rest, eat or just take in the sounds and scenery of nature with no background traffic noise. Lots of parking and covered areas with plenty of seating. Coke machine. Even with the length there are still several chances for birdie. This has the most elevation for a mostly flat course that I have seen so far. It is borderline moderately hilly.

Cons:

No restaurants close. Not much elevation. During warm weather there are plenty of biting and stinging insects. Hot and humid about half of the year. Distances are not correct on tee markers because so many baskets have been moved, for the better in my opinion.

Other Thoughts:

The course itself is my favorite course in Louisiana so far. It is heavily wooded on most holes so there is some shade. There is plenty of land for another course in Lake Bistineau State Park. With a few touch ups and another 18 holes this course could host national events in my opinion.

Best in the Ark-La-Tex 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 14, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The state park itself is beautiful and set far enough away from the city and main roads that it feels very secluded. Wildlife abounds, including deer and alligators (though I believe the gators are rarely seen near the course).

The course is quite wooded and very technical, but mostly flat...there are only 2-3 "open" shots that allow you to really let one loose without worrying about your shot being "tree-nied". Several lake-side holes surrounded by Cypress trees w/ hanging moss make for some great scenery. 2 pin locations on most holes add some variety for tourneys, but they aren't moved very often otherwise. Good variety of shots required to shoot well, nice facilities, cabins for rent (2 are actually on the course), and several very unique shots. My favorites holes are #3-short (shooting through a small gap in the Spanish moss for an ace run), #7 (700' through an open field with a few trees, then 100+' through a tunnel cut into dense woods), and #9-long (mini ski-slope type hole with dense woods on both sides of a 30' wide fairway).

Cons:

Last time I played (a few months ago), the only signs were 4x4s in the ground and small green arrows showing the general direction of the next tee...can be a little confusing your first time through without a guide. All tees are natural right now...which I personally like, but many others might not. Not very beginner friendly...unless you're a beginner that likes a real challenge. Bring bug spray for the swamp mosquitos!!!

**Update - distance and number signage has been added to the existing 4x4 posts marking each hole**

The new pin placement on Hole 13 (right side) is pretty cool, but definitely needs some clearing done. There is only a 2-3' wide gap in the rough surrounding the basket, and only about a 5' radius around the basket has been cleared so far.

Other Thoughts:

Once some better signs and good tees are installed, this will be a superb course. Last time a played there were flags marking alternate tees on most holes..hopefully those will be finalized soon. The park employees have seen a huge increase in park attendance since the course was installed, and if those numbers stay the same there might be a 2nd course coming soon! If you play, stop by the office to pay your $1 entry fee and make sure you tell them you're ther for the disc golf.

long course 2+ years

Pros:

Good facilities in the park, restrooms are in several different places around the course. The state park where the course is located is very scenic with many views of the lake. The course has some variety with open and wooded shots with water in play on a few holes.

Cons:

The course is a little hard to find even with a map. Ther are some very small arrows pointing in the right direction but are not labeled as DG related and I did not even notice them until midway through the 2nd round. Also the score card bore no relationship to the course as configured today. The score card might say 250 ft and the basket might be 450. It was often hard to tell where the basket was and the map had only a general outline with no signage at each tee. Every single hole was in the back position making it a very long course. I would have liked to have seen a mix of long and short or some alternate tees for beginners and/or shorter throwing players.

Other Thoughts:

There were 3 or 4 holes that did have alternate tees but more are needed. Signs for each hole showing where the baskets are would be great and scorecards with both distances are also needed. Not beginner friendly as set up today. Many of the holes are quite long with narrow heavily treed fairways. I would like to play it again with the pins in the short position for comparison.

First Time Thoughts 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

All holes are clearly marked, and a map is available at the check in office. There is a beautiful camp ground with other activities available such as bike rentals, canoe rentals,a swimming area in the summer, group lodges and pavilians. There is even a little gift shop where you may purchase Discs for a reasonable price.

Cons:

All the trees draped with Spanish Moss pose a big challenge .(But That is one thing we all love.)All tee's are grass. None of the baskets are marked as to par ,so I assume they are all a 3. This poses a huge challenge for the novice player such as myself. A couple of holes are 800+ ft.

Other Thoughts:

While it may sound as if I am complaining about the challenge of the course these are just the thoughts of a novice player who loves the game and just played this course the first time. I would highly recomend taking the family and make a vacation of it. (We are booked for a wk the end of Feb.)
