Pros:
Newly installed out-and-back park nine (as of May 2023 the signage isn't in yet) with a mix of concrete tees and marked teeing areas on the asphalt walking path, a few interesting basket placements, and two (!) water carries in a beginner-friendly layout
+ Water carry: Hole #4 is across a small bay to a hillside basket that's level with the tee. The hole is almost 300', but you only need about 180' to carry, so it's mostly in your head. You can avoid the water by playing around to the left. An ace run hyzer line requires 250' or so to be dry
+ Water carry: Hole #8 is across the edge of the lake with a walkway, and fence atop an outlet waterfall. There's a steep dropoff to the fairway and basket below. The hole is 328' and the water carry is only about 125' but you want to be high enough to clear the fence while also considering the finishing fade (RHBH) as your disc drops way down to the fairway
+ Elevation: Hole #2 is a steep drop down into a valley to a basket in a pocket of trees. Holes 3 and 7 are uphills throwing from the walking trail up to sidehill baskets
Cons:
- Lakeside is a huge park that's already built in a lot of water and non-water activities. Grafting a disc golf course onto the existing footprint was tricky, and a few areas are pretty tight. Holes 5 and 6 play side by side in opposite directions. They're wide open, and the longest holes, so expect some spraying into oncoming traffic (players and walkers). Hole 8 plays across Hole 2, and an early fade on 8 could strike players teeing off on 2
- Another aspect of fitting in the course is that the walking trail comes into play on five or six holes: if you're not throwing across it, you're throwing alongside it
- Finishes with a soft slightly uphill 200' par 3. Fun for beginners, but a bit of a letdown after the water carry on #8
Other Thoughts:
~ Lakeside Park in Pawling uses the water and the elevation really well. It's an excellent design job, knowing it had to fit into an existing park, though it comes with the compromises of a few dull holes and a lot of crossover with the existing walking trail. Busy days will bring safety concerns - and maybe putting this layout in wasn't such a good idea. But if you play at a time that's unlikely to have a lot of walkers, you'll enjoy a 30 minute round with a couple of very interesting and fun holes
