Maple Hill is truly a classic Disc Golf layout, now 21 years old and constantly evolving. Remember when #1 always played to the basket on the far side of the pond? First they lengthened it into the woods and made it a Par 4, now they've added a triple mando to access that green, not a favorite change of mine.
Hole #7 for years following a gravel road for much of the fairway (one of my biggest pet peeves on a course), but this year the fairway was moved into the woods and the gravel road is used for spectators. Yeeaaa!
Hole #9, already one of my favorites, with its huge elevation changes and the green with major risk/reward. This has now been increased to a Par 5, with another pond carry to hit a gap in the trees and more elevation increase up to the green.
So many of these holes look great on video, but you have to see them in person to truely appreciate their layout. Here's how a truely Intermediate player sees them:
-- #1 the pond and green really do look like a long carry.
-- #3 its hard to imagine how Feldberg flexed a shot through there and kept its speed for the skip ace.
-- #4 Yes, it really is that tight and the pond is pretty close behind the basket.
-- #5 I really thought I could make that forehand tee shot and find dry land (maybe not on the green), but to see the main gap to use and realize it would take a 30-40 foot fade to reach dry land, I bailed for the land route.
-- #6 the fairway is very tight along the OB stone wall (with #2 on the other side), and the pond is pretty close down the left side.
--#8 even from a shorter tee, its still a dead carry to the green (that's where my used disc purchase went).
--#11 The view is truely awesome from up there, that was one place we had a bit of a backup, pretty cool place to sit. Unbelieveable how far it looks to reach the Gold green.
-- #12 while we didn't play to the Gold basket, we did get a look and its an unbelieveable way down and through the woods to that basket.
-- #14 boy that basket really is perched close to the pond.
-- #18 even from a shorter tee, its still a long way, slightly uphill to reach the green, then you have that tight, heavily protected green. Yes, I came up short on my upshot.
Maple Hill is truely a memorable Disc Golf experience, the Pro Shop (I left my mark there), the multiple layouts, the difficult, yet fair layout, this is a place every player should visit at least once. I almost wish I had stayed for another round (a return visit wasn't possible), but visits to Marshall St and Pyramids (right across the street) and finishing the day at Borderlands capped off my best day of Disc Golf, so far.
