Pros:
The Marshall middle school disc golf course actually plays, not only on the middle school, but on the high school, elementary school and kindergarten grounds too. Also next to a church.
There are 18 baskets here. They are homemade but aren't too bad. They're not great by any means, but I've seen much worse. They're pretty close to your "standard" dimensions. The cages are a bit shallow compared to most newer baskets. Overall though? Better than I was expecting tbh.
There's some solid elevation here, for this part of WI. Nothing crazy or anything, but some undulating terrain throughout to keep things semi interesting.
The course starts and ends by the amply sized parking lot. One of the better attributes of the course. The course was clean and there was a port-a-potty behind hole 16's pin.
The course is permanent (outside of school hours of course) and free to play.
Cons:
Oh man, where to start.
This is one of your typical WI public school courses, but on a grander scale of ineptitube. It's essentially 18 homemade baskets placed sporadically around the lawn areas of 4, that's right 4, neighboring schools.
The flow of the course is downright atrocious. I used the map on Udisc to navigate. Whether that's accurate or not? No idea, but it seemed to make sense. Without that you'd never be able to make sense of this design. I've played over 600 courses and have a decent ability to navigate designs like this. I had a hard time with this one, even using the map.
No signage whatsoever. No tee signs, no next tee arrows or signs. Nothing at all. There are no tee pads or markers either. It's literally the definition of baskets in a field, but reimagined on acid. You'll take a trip here, but it'll be a bad one. Always.
The distances/walks between holes is ridiculous. Playing holes 15 and 16 alone will require, I kid you not, probably a quarter mile walk. To top things off, these play on a sliver of land pinched between 2 different track/football fields and farm fields. Climo or McBeth wouldn't be able to keep it inbounds on this stretch.
Your main obstacles here are fences around various sports fields, parking lots, roads and sidewalks. So if your want to break in a new driver, this might be for you. Very real chance of breaking one of the windows of the four different schools or losing a disc on one of the roofs.
If any other activities are going on, even outside of school hours, holes will have to be skipped. The course plays, almost entirely around different sports fields. So it's a very real possibilty you'll have to skip some holes, which just disjoints the layout even further.
Other Thoughts:
This was one of the poorest designed school courses, or any courses I've played in awhile. There's just not much fun factor here. Me and the wife played this one on a crazy windy afternoon which didn't help me opinion of the course by any means.
That being said, I will not be back here again. It's just such a disjointed, bland, unsafe experience. We had to skip holes 11 and 12 due to baseball practices going on at the time. We skipped 13 as well to save time and get back on route to getting out of there. I saw 13's basket and fairway so I was at least able to visualize the hole. Played the rest.
If you happen to be in this area I wouldn't suggest playing this one. If you want to deal with windy conditions and the potential for lost plastic just head up the road to Bird's Ruins. It's infinitely more fun than here. I've played there 4 or 5 times, and will do so again as much as possible. Not again here though. It was just a bad trip man.
