Pros:

Nice and quick 9 hole course. Loved how it was laid out with natural area surrounding the fairways. Few trees and natural areas to add to accuracy. Nice tee pads and signage (even though some have inaccurate distances and pars).

Cons:

Few of the hole signs are way off with par and distance; i.e. Hole 7 said it was a par 5 +/- 500' in reality it was a par 3 184' according to UDisc

Can lose a disc in the tall natural areas, so bring a spotter or use a bright color discs (i.e. pink).

Other Thoughts:

During the warmer months, parking will be tight with other amenities on sight so plan accordingly.

A Fine Chicago Nine 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Decent variety for a 9-hole park-style course, makes good use of available land

- Well-manicured park is always in good condition and has other activities on-site

Cons:

- Limited difficulty, with long grass rough providing more annoyance than challenge on several holes

- Outdated tee-signs and other aging equipment.

Other Thoughts:

The disc golf course at Maryknoll Park is a good example of doing the best with what you are given. The potential for quality disc golf here is not very high, yet there are a surprising number of interesting holes in this very pleasant, multi-use park. Small hills and slightly sloping greens help give a little challenge to some otherwise completely open holes (e.g. 2, 8, 9), and the limited number of trees are put to good use forcing some slight shot shaping (e.g. holes 3, 4, 5). That said, there still isn't much challenge here, and birdies are certainly easier to come by than bogies, especially for even moderately experience players. The prairie grass shaping many fairways here isn't as thick or tall as I've seen elsewhere, but it still isn't fun to try and find your disc in.

The course was clearly re-designed some time ago, as the tee-signs are just about worthless for accurately describing distance. I would not have thought this to be a big deal to change, especially for a community like Glen Ellyn, but considering reviews have been mentioning this since 2014, it seems unlikely to be remedied. Similarly, the baskets are showing age, and many have really rusted chains. The state of the course equipment is a shame, since the rest of the park is well maintained, and takes away from the otherwise quality feel present. The concrete tee-pads are generally in good shape.

This is a pretty typical 9-hole course for the Chicago suburbs. Nothing to blow you away, but good enough for an enjoyable, casual round in a nice park. I wouldn't go out of my way to play here, but enjoy having it nearby for an occasional quick round after work.

She Used To Hang Out At Maryknoll Park. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 23, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Maryknoll is another lovely park in this immediate area. The park includes mini golf, playgrounds, platform tennis courts (Switch over to pickleball, it's a much better game). The tee pads are large trapezoid shaped ones. They're great. The baskets are INNOVA Discatchers with the yellow bands. The signs give the usual, hole #, Par, and distance, although the course has obviously been redesigned so the distances are actually quite a bit shorter than listed on the signs. Someone has written the actual distances on the signs with a sharpie. Thank you for that courtesy. I'll bet they lowered them in order to keep discs out of the neighbor's yards. There are signs which give you a number to call if your disc finds it way into someone's yard.

The course starts with the first three holes over near the platform tennis courts, then plays in a mostly counterclockwise direction, with the backyards of the neighboring homes on your right. It really gave me that country club feel with these nice houses just off the course. Because you're playing counterclockwise, you won't be throwing many hysers here.

I liked this course and felt it had some personailty. # 4 was a fun throw protected by a few trees. And # 9 was fun throw to a blind basket sitting on a small hillside.

Cons:

The course definitely is set close to the neighbor's backyards. More than a few discs will find their way into those yards.
Better players won't find enough challenge here.
A couple holes are open and on the boring side.

Other Thoughts:

I'M sure shortening a few holes was done to help prevent discs from landing in backyards. I'm also sure some players were not happy with this reduction in length.
I liked this course. I really felt like a golfer with all these nice homes bordering the course. I think it should be rated as another typical Chicago niner, that is a 2.5 rating, but because I liked it so, I'm bumping my rating up to a 3.0.

Good Ol' Maryknoll 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tees are in pretty good shape. Not big rectangular slabs of concrete, just the right size and shaped like a trapezoid. Can't argue with Discatcher baskets either.
The GE park district is one of the best in Chicagoland, so the course itself is in pretty good shape. Last I checked the chains were rusting over, but that should be taken care of. Mowed regularly.

Cons:

I've only been playing for a short while, but from the maps and previous reviews, I think this course has changed in layout on some holes a couple times. This makes navigation a little tough. The map at the kiosk and in the links/files site is not up to date. It shows #6 as starting in the woods beyond hole 5, but now it's in the middle of the basin that 5 plays around.
Yes, the yardages on tee signs are way off. They probably kept the same signs when they had previous layouts, so they're not up to date either. #7 is listed as a 435 ft par 5, but instead might be around 200-225.
NOTE: The basket for #6 is not the one that's visible from the tee (that's 8). Instead, it's a dogleg right over the hill, at the base of a tree.
Safety is pretty good, except for on 3 and 4 there is a park path to the right that's partially obscured. In the spring, there may be t-ball games going on too around holes 8 and 9.

Other Thoughts:

The whole park facility is great, there's a lot of activities. Like most Chicago 9 holers, I think they built the course to use space that otherwise might not be utilized. But this is much better than most of them because it's designed very well.
This merits a 3, in my opinion, because they made the best course out of the space that they could. It's pretty well designed if you think about it. Except for holes 1 or 2, there's some element of the landscape or park that plays into each hole. 3/4 are wooded, 5 plays on a slight ridge, 6 and 7 play in a basin, 8 ends with a tough basket location, and 9 plays along and above a hillside. The signage and navigation bring it down a little, but all in all it's a great place to play. Not very crowded usually, so you can breeze through pretty quickly if you want.
So this is my first review, and it has to go to my original home course. I learned the game here and it wasn't at all a bad place to start.

Easy but enjoyable 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautifully maintained course that is part of a larger park complex with minigolf, ziplines, multiple playgrounds, etc. Teepads are well marked and defined and taper toward the front in an elongated, trapezoidal shape. Course is almost completely wide open, with less than 10 trees that come into play. On hole 4, if you hit the woods to the right of the fairway, there is a path on the other side to easily find your disc. I liked the setup for hole 9 with a hill bisecting most of the fairway with the upper side down the right half of the fairway and the entire fairway rising up shortly before the basket.

Cons:

The par ratings and distances seem off, sometimes laughably so. I'm wondering if that is just a Chicagoland issue, as I've run into that at multiple area courses.

From tee 6, you can see the basket for hole 8, but not for 6 and it could be a little confusing, though I thought the distance looked wrong and jogged ahead to double check. Hole 7's teepad is cracked around the midpoint. Holes 7 & 8 run a little too close together and it is quite easy to cross fairways (in three rounds, I crossed to the opposite side of 8's fairway twice and was on the border between fairways the other round).

Other Thoughts:

I've read that you can rent discs from the store building by the minigolf course, but haven't tried to rent them myself. The staff inside were quite friendly and helped direct me to the first tee. They also offer a number of food and beverage items in the shop. There are trash cans available by several tees, but they seem to be clustered near the end rather than evenly spaced throughout. This is a good starter course and a good ego course for experienced players.

Good Amenities, poor design 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Nice concrete tees.
-Nice baskets.
-Well maintained.
-Some small ridges and depressions to add some difficulty.
-Nice playground for the kids.

Cons:

-Danger! This course offers you the opportunity to hit both unsuspecting people in their backyards, other disc golfers, and townhouses on a few different holes.
-Most shots seem similar with little distance variety.
-Hole 2 which was the best hole on the course has had it's basket moved short of the trees to make the hole a simple wide open shot. Previously there was a protected green.
-There is one instance where it is not clear which basket is which.
-Very blah course. There is nothing to make it stand out.

Other Thoughts:

Another average to poor chicago suburban 9 hole course. This one stands out due to the proximity of fairways to the surrounding homes. I'm surprised this course is still in the ground.

Quick, fun, nine holer 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 9, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

As a whole, this park is a wonderful accomplishment of the Glen Ellyn Parks Department. It offers a bunch of different activities (such as disc golf, platform tennis, playgrounds and mini-golf, and maybe others!), yet seems to avoid the congestion issue of these activities getting in the way of one another. As far as the course goes...

*Seems to have solid maintenance.

*Good baskets and tee pads.

*Uses trees to shape some lines

*Has some distance variety

Cons:

Don't plan on making this course a destination stop on your dg roadtrip. It is far from a world class course.

*Overall pretty short distances

*Not much difficulty on holes, even where lines are shaped.

*The signs here seemed inaccurate... I dont know this for sure, but they just didn't seem consistent

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little course. If I lived in Glen Ellyn I would probably come here all the time.

Also, it's a nice park with a lot of activities. Maybe the large demographic of park users will attract new people to the sport of disc golf (I know I am now interested in learning what platform tennis is).

Mehknoll Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Everything about this course was meh. It was pretty open, all the shots sort of seemed the same, nothing really stood out about it. Meh.

The park was very pretty and well cared for. The tees were concrete (although it seems that #7 was moved and badly cracked) and the baskets were in good shape. There were nice tee signs with comical distances and hilarious pars. There were 9 holes of disc golf, all about 300' long, with a handful of easily-avoided trees scattered around. There was some gently rolling hills that could have added some elevation changes but mostly were ignored. As a recreational course it was probably long enough to present some challenge to new players.

Cons:

The course was too wide open and repetitive to really be anything more than a beginners course. There just wasn't any challenge to it, and it didn't have any fun or unique holes. It was just point and shoot golf. Given that it is a beginners design, there should have been at least one short Ace Run shot and some variety to the distances of the holes to mix things up.

As with a lot of "small park" courses, there were some places where the holes were too close together and caused some safety concerns. There were some places where I could imagine someone could throw into a neighboring yard as well.

Other Thoughts:

By now it's a cliche, but Maryknoll Park is just another classic Chicago course: A basically flat, mostly wide open 9-hole course that really doesn't get you excited.

Blech. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Located in a well manicured park with tons of playground activities, walking paths, etc. and surrounded by suburban homes, with backyards adjacent to the course. Great fun on site for the whole family. Mostly a giant glorified lawn, Maryknoll desperately tries to bring some gently rolling elevation into play, and uses as many of the few trees available, but mostly this is wide open golf.
- Great amenities. Outstanding concrete tees (although #7's tee is already badly cracked). Okay signs list the hole number and distance, but take the listed distances with a grain of salt, as they are off badly in spots.
- Decent enough distance to create a bit of a challenge for beginners or very casual players. Open enough, and probably infrequently used, so ideal for field practice.

Cons:

- Several holes play dangerously close to each other. #6's tee lies directly in the kill zone of noob hyzers thrown from #5's tee.
- Open for the most part, and pretty mindless. Too long in the distance department for beginners to have rewarding birdie chances, but short and open enough for most to save pars. Too short for experienced players to get much of a challenge past one-disc rounds or safari golf.
- Goose excrement covers most of the course. I realize there's not much the course designers can do about this problem; regardless, its presence always detracts from a round in my opinion. Hopefully, it's a occasional seasonal occurrence.

Other Thoughts:

- It looks as though there was a slight redesign on a few holes that pushed the course back from some of the surrounding private properties. #7's tee might have been moved, resulting in the cracked concrete pad. A redesign would also explain why several signs list blatantly wrong distances.
- Be on the look-out for neighborhood dog walkers, joggers, etc.

Cons:

-if you have a bad throw you are looking through peoples backyards
-a short 9 hole
-i do not think that the distances on the holes are accurate
- hole 6 was the best hole on the course but they moved the pad out from under some big oak trees into an open field to make it just like 7 of the other shots at the course

-Not enough obstacles.
-Some holes are pretty close to each other.
-Some fairways have homes that can come into play with an errant shot, be careful!
-Could use some benches to rest at in between holes.
-Addition of few more trash cans would be greatly appreciated.

Good for some practice, not super exciting 2+ years

Pros:

- grass cut/course well maintained
- good concrete tees
- nice baskets
- some obstacles
- tee signs
- some level of elevation change

Cons:

- not the most exciting layout
- too open to really be challenging
- shot selection is largely unnecessary

Other Thoughts:

This course is ok. If it's nearby and you want some practice it's fine, but it doesn't really offer anything you can't get elsewhere. Some holes have some trees to avoid but for the most part it's too open. They have updated this course a bit to add wetland/prairie plants that add a bit of dynamic and challenge, but it's still quite open. I do find it pushes me to use forehand and backhand shots depending on the hole now, but you really could do the whole thing with one or the other if you had to.

Considering all of the other courses in the area, this one doesn't get a ton of traffic. If you have young children there is a nice playground and splash pad in the park, as well as mini golf, tennis, etc. If you are stopping by for other reasons it's a decent place to throw a quick 9, but I only go frequently because it's the closest course to my house.

Puzzling changes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 22, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I really want to like this course more than I do, especially because it is 10 minutes from where I work. However I can't give it more than 2 stars because it's just not that special a course. As others have said I guess the designers did the best they could with the limited space that they had to work with. Also the course is in an area that is used pretty much exclusively for disc golf so you don't have to contend with joggers etc. The tee pads are well designed and baskets are in great shape. FYI The 1st tee pad has been straightened out so that it actually faces the basket.

Cons:

HOWEVER there were some other recent changes made to the course that are real head scratchers and in my opinion make what was an OK course worse and not better. When I first played the course in May of 2011 the 2nd basket was tucked in among some pine trees and required a long RHBH anhyzer. I would say that this used to be one of the slightly more interesting holes. However for some strange reason they have recently moved the second hole basket out into the middle of the fairway which makes the hole a rather boring 300 foot open field shot with no line shaping required. This is not an alternate pin placement but looks to be a permanent change. WHY? Also the 7th tee pad used to be slightly elevated on a small ridge that allowed for a slight downhill shot to the basket. For whatever reason the pad was moved 30 feet to the west and into the bottom of the floodplain which makes for a more boring tee point and introduces a much higher probability that the tee will be flooded out after a strong rain. Once again...WHY?

Other Thoughts:

My final criticism of this course is that all of the distances are very similar. All but two of the holes are within 15 feet of 300 which make for a very repetitive feel to each round. I would much rather see a few 200ish ace runs along with some longer grip and rip holes. If you are in the area it's OK for a quick round but I wouldn't go out of my way to play this course. As always please pick up your trash and leave the course nicer than you found it. May all your drives be true & all your putts (and the occasional drive) end with a satisfying clink of chain.

Typical 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through an otherwise unused corner of a multi-use park. There are some minor hills that are used well to make the mostly open holes more interesting. A few of the holes have nice mature trees in play to make you shape some lines, including a nice low ceiling shot on 6. The last hole has a little more distance allowing for a nice long drive.

The park is in great shape, with nice grass that was mowed short when I played. Even with recent rains, there wasn't much mud, the grass is growing in around the tees. The pads are nice concrete with some texture, and are a decent size. The discatchers are brand new and catch fine.

Cons:

The course is a pretty typical Chicagoland 9 holer, a few holes with some nice trees but overall pretty open. There is a little more length than many of the other area courses, but most of the holes have pretty similar distances so that doesn't help the variety at all. Too many of the shots are straight ahead, only two require any kind of interesting line shaping.

There are no signs other than a small printed map on the shed near the beginning of the course. This makes it a little difficult to figure out which tee to throw from in a couple of spots (1 and 3, and 7 and 9). There are also a couple spots where baskets are pretty close and it's not immediately obvious from the tee which one to throw from (baskets 3 and 9, and 6 and 8). This also causes some potential safety issues where holes play near one another.

Other Thoughts:

This course is an ok beginner course, though a little long for many first time players. There are enough trees to keep it interesting for a new player but not too much punishment for errant shots. More experienced players can get some solid practice in here especially with some fun safari options, but it's not challenging enough to keep it interesting for very many rounds.

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Maryknoll is a decent course that plays around an open green space in a suburban park.

This place has a few nice natural features that make it a solid addition to the west suburban 9-hole line up. The course plays through some minor elevation shifts, minor even for the suburbs, but enough to provide variety.

Mature pine trees on 2-6 add some challenge and obscure the pin from the tee on a couple holes. This section is definitely the strongest part of the course... #2's tee shot is a mando that requires RHBH to throw a 250ft anny for a chance at the duece and #4 is best approached with a roller off the tee.

The course flows well, the baskets are brand new discatchers, and the concrete tee pads are roomy enough for a big run up.

Cons:

There is enough variety here to replay it a couple times, but this is a neighborhood course, not a destination course. The land just doesn't provide for many interesting shots. Tee signs aren't up, but I'd estimate most holes are in the 250ft range +/- 50 feet.

Holes 7-9 are completely open tee shots across an empty field, which makes for a boring end to the course.

This is a multi-use park surrounded by houses, so there is potential for conflict with non DGers.

Other Thoughts:

This course is brand new, so it's a little rough around the edges at this point. Without tee signs this place is more like a 1.5, but I'm guessing they'll be putting them in at some point.

This course is located in a pretty densely populated area, so it should serve as a good entry point to the game for new players. This also might lead to some crowding as word gets out, but for now you should be able to cruise through a round in 20 minutes.

Pros:

This course is located in a very nice area and a very well kept park. It has a few scattered trees and slightly rolling hills. After you enter the parking lot head to the southwest corner. Don't confuse #3's tee pad with #1. #1's tee pad is just north of the brown shed and plays west. #3's tee is directly behind the shed and plays south.

Brand new Innova baskets.

Large and level to the ground cement tee pads.

Easy to navigate. Friendly beginner course.

Cons:

There are no tee signs or numbers on the tees.

The tees have new dirt laid around them. Once grass takes they will be very nice. Until then it's going to be super muddy. Every tee has fresh dirt around them.

It's pretty wide open with very few obstacles.

I felt the slightly rolling hillsides could have been used to make a few greens more interesting.

Other Thoughts:

It will be interesting to see if the neighbors have a problem with this course and if it lasts. There are some super nice expensive houses that line the course.

This course sits just minutes off I355. If you get caught is traffic this isn't a bad place to stop for a while. There is a nice miniature golf course in the park as well.

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set in a smallish section of this park, pretty much clear of everything but a few houses on one side. General park-goers could wander into the fairways, otherwise no conflicts.
- There are some holes with decent elevation change due to some hilly spots. A few downhill drives/elevated teepads, sloped fairways, and a blind shot around/over a hill. Some of the greens have a little rollaway potential, but nothing too extreme.
- Not that many trees at the course, but a few holes make good use of tall, bushy pines. #2's basket has lots of schule in front and a pine tree behind, forcing a wide RHBH anny or a tight RHBH hyzer. #3 also forces a right curve to get around a bunch of pines.
- A good amount of LHBH friendly shots help to keep the course interesting, to balance out some of the wide open shots to be found.
- Good baskets, good teepads (though #1's is pointed in the wrong direction). No signage as of now, and the baskets aren't numbered; but the worst that could happen is playing them out of order.

Cons:

- Almost half of the holes have little to no obstacles, so it's a simple grip and rip with little thought.
- A few holes are pretty close to each other, if the course is busy keep an eye out.

Other Thoughts:

- Hole lengths here are all pretty similar, anyone throwing at or over 300' will probably get bored after a round or two. But, that also means there aren't too many ace runs or gimmees. Really depends on the person on whether that is a good or bad thing.
- Great course for beginners to learn on, with good length, different lines, and elevation changes. For more experienced players, a great place to practice.
