Nice Park Course with Layout Issues 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 31, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good length to fairways despite small footprint of course

- Mature trees, road/path, and creek provide enough obstacles and hazards to make for an entertaining round

- Pleasant park is enjoyable to play through

Cons:

- Several layout issues including conflicts with the road/path, a playground, and too close baskets and tees

- Mostly open and completely flat

- Natural tees and a couple missing tee signs

Other Thoughts:

The disc golf course at Point Rock Park plays down and back a narrow strip of land bounded by a wooded hillside and Carrol Creek. It is a lovely park that is great to play through with a handful of other amenities including multiple playgrounds and pavilions. Unfortunately the narrow nature of the course results in many areas of conflict between neighboring fairways and other park amenities. The narrow access road/walking path is thrown over on both Holes 3 and 4, long/errant drives on Hole 1 have the chance of reaching either of the playgrounds, and there are multiple locations where drives could find the next tee or neighboring fairways. The good news is that the park does seem to be pretty low traffic, but a crowded day would definitely be problematic.

The actual golf is not terribly exciting, but has enough going on to make for an entertaining round. Mature trees force some limited shot shaping, and the creek and road create OB boundaries for a little added challenge. The creek is in play to varying degrees on Holes 5 to 9, but looks to generally be shallow and clear enough to allow retrieval for those willing to get a little wet. I had one disc go in on Hole 8 and was able to get it back with minimal effort using a Kwik Stik.

The DISCatcher baskets are on the older side but still catch well. The tee signs are nice, showing hole number, par, distance, and a basic depiction of the fairway. The signs are missing on both Holes 7 and 9. While the tee area is apparent for Hole 7, I had to assume a tee location on Hole 9. The natural tees seem to be barely worn, adding to my perception of the course getting little traffic.

Hopefully the safety issues present never manifest in any actual issues because this is actually quite a nice little nine-hole course with some decent fairway distances and obstacles. It is quick to play through and worth stopping at if you are in the area.

point rock park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 16, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful, picturesque small park tucked away in a nice little town.
Perfect for a quick round when traveling thru.
Easy to navigate.
Pretty easy course, makes you fell like a pro.

Cons:

I could seeing this course being a potential issue if the park is busy as stated in other posts.
No pad or tee marker for #9.
Pretty easy course, makes you wish you were a pro!

Other Thoughts:

I've never been on weekends, but on weekday its all yours, great place to get some practice in as there's nobody behind you.
Other than update the tee pads signs (i don't have issue with grass pads) there's not much that can be done.

Dangerous 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a small flat park along a river. A few holes bring the water into play on errant shots, adding a little bit of fun risk to those holes. One green has the water in play, so you have to make some decisions on going for long putts. There are some nice mature trees in play on most holes to encourage some different lines, and a road ob also makes a few holes a little tricky. There are two sets of tees that offer longer and shorter looks for different levels of players, and the course is easy to follow.

Cons:

The safety issues here are pretty bad. The park road comes into play, though at least there's good visibility to see if cars are in range. Many holes play through or over playgrounds and picnic areas, so if the park was in use at all several of the shots would be unplayable. If players with less etiquette ignore those conflicts and play through anyway, it could lead to serious issues. The layout of the course isn't bad for the space available, but it's a mostly open flat piece of land so it just doesn't have any challenging or exciting shots.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find some challenges with large trees to avoid and water in play on really errant shots. More experienced players won't be tested, it's short and doesn't call for any real line shaping. I hate seeing courses put in with no thought to how it will interact with other park patrons. It gives us a bad image when inconsiderate discers through into other groups, and can easily result in pulled courses and towns hesitant to put in future courses.

Pros:

Well let's see nice discatcher's water come's into play a lot. Good for the beginner's out there.

Cons:

you have to throw threw play ground equipment i mean what the hell is up with that. And volleyball next to hole one and a big shelter house by hole four or five i mean if there are people here you can not play like half the hole's just to crowded in this park.

Other Thoughts:

it's nice to see a course in such a small town but it just should not be in this park.

nice water views 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice little park with decent yardage and trees to keep you honest. Carroll Creek wraps around the course and provides quite scenic views. Dirt tees rarely played; meaning you have a good little course all to yourself (not all that common these days. Two other courses in area; Old Mill and Millcreek Parks, are also little played and thus; this area offers a wonderful opportunity for a day trip of quiet, relaxing golf in nice settings.)
Signage yardages seemed correct.

Cons:

Water not really in play except for quite errant shots. Somewhat short by modern standards. (To be fair; it was quite wet out and we played short tees). Longer tees 3,000, and thus; quite up to modern standards; but, shot requirements not special.
Only nine holes.

Other Thoughts:

Therefore; a 2.5; though this is a very pretty park.

Hidden Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a very nice 9 hole course hidden in the back part of a little park. Use of playground equipment and trees make this course a little more challenging than it might look.

Cons:

Park does have a river running next to it. So if your off on your throws your disc will end up in the drink.

Other Thoughts:

All in all this is a hidden gem of a course in a town the size of Mt. Carroll.
