Saint Catherine's

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Saint Catherine's Disc Golf Course is located on the property of Saint Catherine's Catholic Church. I observed that the church maintains the property well, as the grass was cut low. The tee for #1 is located directly behind the Saint Catherine's Thrift Store. The tees are grass. Each tee is identified with a sign that displays the hole number, distance, and par, and with two stone rocks painted bright pink that are set on each side of the tee. Each hole has a second tee for a longer distance. The baskets are orange Yaheetech baskets. The baskets are not mounted on poles in the ground, but are instead hung by chains from tree branches or boards, or are mounted to tree trunks. Each basket number is on display over the basket. I played the course without a map. I found the layout of the course to be easy to follow.

Cons:

Mackenzie Creek forms the eastern border of the church property and course. The second half of May 2023 and the first 10 days of June 2023 in southeastern Missouri had been hot with little to no rain, and as a result course was bone dry when I played. I observed the heavily wooded portion of the course to display evidence that the creek overflowed and flooded the fairways earlier in the spring or during the winter on #3 through #6 and #8. Before I left the course, I visited the thrift store and an employee of the store verified that the creek sometimes overflows during periods of heavy rain, and that the wooded area then is covered with water. This is likely a reason why the baskets are not mounted on poles, and instead are hung by chains from branches or are mounted to tree trunks.

Other Thoughts:

Piedmont, Missouri, population 1,977, is located on the southern edge of the Saint Francois Mountain region in the eastern Ozarks. The area is beautiful, with forested mountains, creeks and rivers, and valleys with cattle pastureland. The Piedmont area is a weekend camping and vacation destination, with fishing, boating, and camping available on Clearwater Lake, canoeing and tubing on the Black River, and camping, hiking, and biking trails available at Sam A. Baker State Park. Saint Catherine's Disc Golf Course is the only disc golf course within a 30 mile radius. With the population of Piedmont, and with there being no other towns in Wayne County with a population of over 500, and no other towns within 30 miles of Piedmont with populations over 1,000, it is likely that there will be very few local players who frequent this course. In all likelihood, most of the players on this course will be the weekend visitors who primarily come to Piedmont for Clearwater Lake, the Black River, or Sam A. Baker State Park.
