Big Rock Candy Mountain!

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 13, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Stardust Cellars is a unique little nine-hole course at a brewery on a mountainside. I was very intrigued with the design of some of the holes here. The first hole is up top on a sedimentary shale mound that's over 20' high. The third hole is on a flat ridge between two shelves. The one on the left is below and the one on the right is about 20' above the fairway.

Some major elevation changes that make for different shot shaping requirements. #2 is up a ridge between the shale mound and the downslope of the ridge on the right side. #6 was a daunting 150' drop shot from a platform to VERY small shelf 40' below where the basket is. 150' drop shot down a huge hill seems like a must get. Just wait until you see this! Go long, and you'll be fighting your way back up the hill. This is one the wildest short holes I ever seen.

-Fair balance of open and wooded. Five open and four tight wooded holes. Different shot shaping requirements. #7 is a legit severe downhill, dogleg right.

-They have cherry mead. I LOVE cherry mead. Especially the sour cherry. They have some fine wines that won't disappoint.

Cons:

-Disappoints me to say it, because the first seven holes are interesting to say at the least. The last two are pitiful wide open holes in the field behind the building. Immediately upon finishing #9 you see a ridge bordering between the woodline and the top of the hill down a pasture. My first thought was why not make a long downhill grip and rip across the field and down the pasture.

-Attendees leaving their wine and beer bottles on the course.

-Issues with weathering. You'll see what I mean with the high shelf on #3. Tornado hits, and you never know what lasting damage it could potentially cause.

-I saw a dead red shouldered hawk beside #2's tee box.

-Could use some better signage. Not all of the pads have hole info. I never found the pad for #9.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed the first seven holes. All of them had some sort of purpose. The first two holes are uphill, while #3 has you throwing on the ridge between two shelves. #4 is a very tight uphill ace run with a fairway no more than 12' wide. #5 and #6 are both short and VERY tight downhill holes with drop off potential. #7 is a severe downhill dogleg. Drops right at 60'! The elevation is quite drastic for it being a short course.

-As much as I enjoyed the first seven, Stardust has quite a few basic issues. There's little to no signage. You'll need U disc to find your way. Especially to #8 since it's a painfully long and steep uphill walk just to get to a wide open hole with no flavor.

-I think you'll enjoy it. It's a unique experience throwing up on a 20' rock and to throw down from a platform to another. I just wish the ending was better. I'd give it a 2.0 if the last two holes had more thought put into them.

-Be careful driving up the driveway here. It's steep and rocky.
