Care for a round after work?

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 4, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Set on the large parcel of land around the fitness center side adjacent to Georgetown, Kentucky's enormous Toyota campus, is a fittingly designed loop of 18 holes of disc golf well scaled to its intended audience. Most holes are in the 'wheelhouse' for recreational disc golfers, with three right around 200', most being in the mid to lower 200's, and only two holes over 300' (and marked as 'par 4's). Though it slightly favors the rbhb fade line, there are at least a couple of holes that are definitely left to right, and about half can be thrown 'as you wish'.

Tee signage is basic, but functional, and all tees are 4'x10' level concrete in good repair. Baskets appear to be Veterans (?) with the bands painted silver, are visible, and catch pretty well. They've used a small circle of tarp around the bases of the poles (just like they used under the sloping parts of the mulched paths), but these could use some updated mulching. The course flows logically and well, and plays smoothly for small casual groups. The design does an excellent job of using the available space, and would be ideal if only the mulched paths therein were used exclusively for disc golfers (though I suspect that's not the case). The balance between fun and challenge level is very well done.

Cons:

For those who always want to throw longer shots, except maybe hole 10, this might not be the course for you. Conversely, for beginners, the prairie grasses (in season, throughout, but especially on 17 & 18) and pond on 7 will be 'eating' some discs. Having played near lunchtime on a weekday in December, I only once noted one non-player using the paved path to the right of hole 10, but the repeated use of the mulched paths and trails as fairways had me concerned that you may have some shots in the air before you realize someone is there (especially on hole 13). Use caution throwing on holes 7, 13, 15, 17 & 18. Some areas of the course are serene and in almost a nature preserve setting, but you'll definitely have Interstate highway road noise over on hole 7. Finally, it seems odd that they didn't create a clear way to play a shortened round over lunch (though the path from 5 to the right may get you close to 17?): after hole 9, you're well out away from the start.

Other Thoughts:

They clearly built the course for Toyota employees to enjoy after work or on weekends, but also obviously don't mind the occasional visitor (and I appreciate that). Drive around the loop counter-clockwise from the traffic circle to the park shelter at the dead end. At the east end of the lot, there's a welcome sign stating this is the Mendomi Meadows Disc Golf Course, and you walk forward to the tee sign for hole 1 (which is inaccurately marked as 195' …it's 246' across the mulch path beside a guardian clump of rough). From there, you'll almost always see the next tee from the basket, and when you can't, they've added nice 'next tee' signage (they might need to add one between 6 and 7). The course did not appear to be heavily used, as it was soft soil and lacking in the usual compaction and erosion more extensively trafficked courses experience.

A Well-Hidden and Decent Course

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- concrete tees
- good quality baskets in decent repair
- some garbage cans and benches throughout course
- mostly a dedicated disc golf space with good variety and distance
- one major water hazard, some decent elevation change, and a variety of shots
- good use of next tee signs for 6, 10, 12, 18
- landscape fabric and minimal mulch around baskets to keep them dry
- navigation is fairly straightforward
- really nice natural area with rabbits, birds, frogs, etc.

Cons:

- technically on Toyota Manufacturing property, but no indication the public isn't allowed, and no access control
- concrete tees are very small
- tee signs only have hole, par and distance and leave a bit to be desired
- next tee sign needs to be put in for 7
- lots of safety hazards with nature trail
- no practice basket, limited amenities
- rough is a bit long, and is really bad on 16-18 (prairie plants)

Other Thoughts:

I couldn't believe it when my father in law, who doesn't play disc golf, mentioned there was a course a few miles from our hotel and turned out to be right! This course was not yet on DGCR so I headed over to play and document it. Overall, it was a fun round. If you are a Toyota employee, this is a great addition to their family park. While some areas of the plant are gated access, this is wide open and Toyota touts their nature park as being a good part of the community so there's no indication you aren't welcome to play.

The biggest con here are the safety hazards. While it's mostly a dedicated disc golf area, many holes cross or otherwise interfere with the nature path - including 5, 6, 7, 10, 13, 15, and 17 at a minimum. Admittedly, I didn't see a single person on this path, but I was also there at 6 AM on a Monday morning, so it could be more of an issue at other times of day.

This course has some decent elevation change and lots of varied shots, with many being partially wooded but some of the front 9 being more open. The rough isn't mowed as short as some courses but it wasn't an issue until the end where you risk losing your disc in the tall prairie plants - watch out for ticks.

A few more garbage cans and benches might have been nice, and if you're going to the effort of putting in 18 concrete tees, I so wish you'd just make them a bit bigger than this course did. The tee signs also would be much better with some color maps, but overall the course is still playable and fun with some decent challenge.

One of the signature holes is Hole 7, where you have to throw down a narrow channel between the pond on your right and the Interstate off to the left. It's a high risk shot that challenges you throw placement well.

With respect to finding the course, once you take Family Circle to a dead end in the parking lot, you need to go to the far end of the parking lot past the shelter and memorial and the first tee is on your right. The sign by the beginning of the nature trail is not the start of the course; this is near 18's basket. Also, for hole 7, you have to follow the nature trail past the basket for 6 and take a left when you reach the pond, crossing over the bridge to get to the tee for 7.

This course was a bit muddy in places but overall was fairly well maintained. I decided after looking at some of my other ratings this course just barely warranted a 3. It's not amazing, but it's worth making the trip if you're in the area. I would rate the challenge as moderate; it's ok for beginners but probably better for intermediate players and up.
