Pros:

- Multiple tee pads and different basket locations
- Difficult par 3 and 4 holes
- Variety in terms of fairway/hole shape
- Great course for rollers with all of the maintained grass
- Love the bunkers (large bushes) through out the fairways and greens that make running landing spots difficult
- Well defined fairways and thick rough to punish bad throws
- Easy navigation
- Beautiful new DGA baskets
- Short "island hole" (no water) with a raised basket was a nice touch

Cons:

- Very little elevation, only small, gradual changes that didn't affect shot selection or thought pattern much
- A few of the longer par 3 holes and par 4 holes are roughly the same distance and fairly short for par 4 holes. Adding some length could make these more true to form par 4's.
- If you don't have a cannon, you might find that many of these holes are unreachable for birdie and not likely to bogey either
- For those of you who care about pay to play, be warned it is not free

Other Thoughts:

I found this course to be very good but perhaps not my taste. First I don't throw 450 which is needed to score well here and challenge greens. I found that the lack of elevation really bothers me at some courses especially when they are more on the open side like this place is. Overall I appreciated the course for what it is and imagine if I were younger and better I would enjoy this place more. I really appreciated that it was an almost disc golf exclusive area. 27 holes and long so not a short, stretch the legs kind of course. If you like challenge off the tee and can throw a disc 400+ you'll like this place.

Love me some Token Creek! drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- 27 Holes to play.
- Variety of shot shapes & distances.
- 2 Sets of tee pads and 3 rotating pin positions for each hole.
- Well maintained by the county!
- New upgraded baskets.
- Camping on sight.

Cons:

- Can get very busy on weekday evenings and weekends.
- Not a whole lot of parking nearby the course itself.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a great park course! Mostly open shots with a few wooded holes mixed in. Long pads test your distance and accuracy very well and the short pads are fun for some ace runs or for the shorter arms to have a good time!

Call it Token Creek. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is by far my favorite course out of the four Madison area courses being a local. This course isn't far off from a "Championship" level course. Token Creek was the final round course for the 2016 Am Worlds when the tournament was in Madison. This course has a good mixture of long holes and shorts holes. Token Creek also has a good mixture of wooded holes and open holes. Token Creek is 27 holes with a great layout that brings hole 18 right back to the parking lot with hole 19 also being right next to hole 1. So if you only want to play 1-18 you can and if you only want to play the last 9, hole 19 - 27, you can, Each hole has a short and long tee pad. Also each hole has three different pin positions except hole 22 which is an island hole. The pin positions rotate weekly. The fairways and entire course are always very well maintained by the county.

Cons:

The only "Con" Token Creek has is that it doesn't have much elevation change at all as almost every hole is pretty much flat. Also it can get slightly busy here in the summer on Saturday mornings Token Creek has a random draw doubles league at 10 am. Other than that, it can get a little busy during the week after 4 pm each day but nothing terrible.

Other Thoughts:

This is by far the best course in the Madison area in my opinion. If you only have time to play one course in the Madison area, play this course, you will not regret it. Lastly, call it Token Creek. Its real name is "Vallarta - Ast" but none of us locals even know how to properly say it. The course is on the "Token Creek County Park" so every just calls the course Token Creek.

Get Ready to Rip! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- 27 Holes!
- Two teepads at every hole and 3 potential basket locations
- Nice concrete teepads
- Excellent tee signage.
- Fairways are well maintained and mowed.
- Very clean. Have yet to see much of any trash/cans/graffiti on the course.
- Pretty nice variety. Some wooded, some open. All skills levels will enjoy.
- A few fun feature holes including a "through the window" ace run or death putt hole and a "stonehenge" island hole.
- Opportunities to air it out with your distance drivers, especially on the back 9 (19-27).
- Basically disc golf exclusive area. It's located in a park/campground but it's off on it's own.

Cons:

- There's some serious disc-eating roughs on many, if not the majority, of the holes. We're talking tall grasses which may include poison ivy/stickers/ etc. You really want to keep it on the fairway here or you're going to spend time looking for discs.
- Unless you have a big arm, it's hard to score real well here. There's a few shorter birdie opportunities, but for the most part you'll need to bomb to get in birdie range.
- While you are in a nice semi-wooded campground area, the constant drone of traffic from Highway 51 ruins some of the ambiance.
- Navigation is tricky in some areas. Multiple paths leading from the basket in some cases and in a few spots you need to cross the road and walk a bit to the next teepad. Some signage would go a long way.
- What's the opposite of disc grabbing chains? That's what these baskets have. I don't know if they're a little older or extra heavy or what but they seem prone to spit outs/straight up rejections. Seriously, I saw a buddy casually toss a tap in from < 3 feet away that smacked chains and bounced straight back onto the grass. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.
- It's pay to play, which is not a con to me, but the $8/day rate seems a bit high. I think it should be more like $5. Granted there are 27 holes and the course seems to be kept up with, so maybe I'm splitting hairs.
- Some of the holes are a bit repetitive. 350 foot open fairway with a few trees to dodge. Not bad by any stretch, but not quite the variety of some of the other top area courses.

Other Thoughts:

Token Creek, as it's simply known locally, is a nice compliment to the other Madison area courses. It's more open, and also longer, than either Elver or Hiestand. This is a good thing in my opinion, as it fills a niche not served by the others. All in all, this is a really nice course that is well maintained and generally not as crowded as the other top courses. Being able to play 27 is also a real nice bonus, and probably bumps it up a half star for me. For a 300 foot arm such as myself, it might be a little frustrating to be playing for par on most holes, but it's still a fun and enjoyable round. There are a few cons, but on the whole they are pretty minor. It's a course I'll be returning to multiple times in the future.

The extra nine helps! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

As the 52nd reviewer of this course, I'm not sure how much else there is to add, but I'll give my brief thoughts in any case.

+ 27 holes of disc golf on a well maintained property! The sheer volume of disc golf that you can play here bumps this course up from a 3.5 to a 4.0 in my eyes.
+ You can tell that the pay-to-play is utilized. The grass seems to be mowed frequently, the trash cans weren't overflowing, and the facilities on-site were clean. Benches are abundant and course equipment (tees, tee signs, baskets) are in good condition.
+ The flow is, for the most part, pretty logical. When there is confusion on where to go next (such as multiple paths), the disc golf path is usually mulched. This help guide us, as first-timers, through the course.
+ This area is solely dedicated to disc golf. There is no issue with having to watch out for other park-goers when throwing drives.
+ With 27 holes, there's a little bit of variety in lines that are required. You have your straight holes, your around an obstacle holes, and your dog legs to both directions. It felt to me like a very fair course where skill was valued over luck.
+ The island hole on the last nine is a really, really cool hole. Definitely the signature in my eyes. It's fair and fun.

Cons:

- Lack of major elevation here made many of the holes feel monotonous. Even with 3 sets of pins and two tees, there isn't much variation in the holes. Often times the pins are within 30 feet of each other.
- The course, while long and manicured, felt boring. Truthfully, outside of the island hole, I didn't find myself looking forward to any holes during my second round here. I truthfully can't see myself coming back here.
- Mosquitos are god awful. I'm not deducting points off this course because of it, but just pointing it out. I layered myself in three different repellents and still got rocked.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, one round here would suffice. It's a long round, but it's a pretty boring one. It's great, however, if you want to get away from it all and just immerse yourself in disc golf for a couple hours. I don't know if it's worth the $8 fee. I feel like there could be features added (like elevated baskets or something) that would make this course much more memorable and fun.

First time, played the longs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tee pads, good use of land, well designed, easy to follow layout, well manicured. My first course that I played in Wisconsin. First thought that comes to mind is the beautiful use of boulders. Some of the greens I would call signature greens. Good mixture of left/right shots. Mostly long shots but I played all the long pads. Has bathrooms available close to halfway through the course. Also has up to 27 holes and a big parking lot.

Cons:

Lack of elevation. At $8 seems overpriced in comparison to the local courses that I played the next day for $5. Could use some next tee arrow signs in some places.

Other Thoughts:

Rewards smart play which is a bonus to me. The rough can be very punishing in some places. I think this is a very well balanced course. I didn't play the shorts but seemed like an extreme difference between playing the shorts and longs. If I was to only play one round here, the perfect layout would be a mixture of shorts and longs. Most of the shorts looked really short and the longs were really long. It could use more shots that are more inbetween. Didn't throw many mid ranges from the long pads and I throw a midrange close to 350' for point of reference.

Fun for out of towner 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was in town for a funeral and needed a pick me up. This course provided that for me! I played short pins and used my fairway driver for most of the drives. The long pins didn't seem more challenging, just required a longer throw. The course is well manicured and was easy to navigate.

My favorite hole was the island hole, but it was just an easy putter hyzer for birdie.

There was also a nice mix of sidearm and backhand throws. There really isn't any risk of losing your disc unless you really shank your throw.

I was the only one on the course which was nice also.

Cons:

I played in the spring so the ground was wet, though it wasn't horrible. Not really the fault of the course, just bring an extra towel and good shoes.

Other Thoughts:

If you're in town and want a straight forward course to boost your confidence, play here!!

fun golf at a beautiful park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well maintained park and well marked tee signs. Big bonus that there are 3 pin placements and 2 sets of tee pads at each hole. Benches at a lot of holes, and when I wanted to sit I was able to. As someone new to Madison, I got lucky enough to play with some locals, but seems easy enough to navigate. Mach V baskets are dependable and catch well. Pretty beginner friendly from the red tee pads, and judging from where the blues were those add a decent amount of difficulty.

Cons:

Not a lot of trouble to get into, at least the time of year I played. Would probably be a lot more challenging if all of the tall grass areas played OB, especially would make the last 9 a bit more interesting.

If you're hitting the fairways, which are pretty big, it feels like playing on a ball golf course. There was less technical challenge than I had expected, at least playing from red tees to blue pins. I think I found myself in a tough spot maybe once or twice over the entire round.

Other Thoughts:

Pay to play courses are a new concept to me, since in Mid-Missouri they are all free to play. Course was definitely well maintained. Personally I'd like to see better signage at the baskets, like next hole indicators. It seems fairly intuitive to play and navigate but having number plates on the basket and indicators to where the next pin is at would be helpful, as I was faced with multiple trails a couple of times and was unsure where to go.

There also seems to be a lack of trash cans on the course, but that doesn't affect me as I always pack out what I pack in anyway. Course was nice and free of litter anyway, so probably not a big deal overall - I'd imagine the pay wall to play the course means that people are a bit more responsible when it comes to things like littering.

From the reds tee to blue pin, this course doesn't offer much challenge for a high advanced/low open rated player. I was able to shoot -7, with 2 bogies, and I felt like I played pretty average. I'd certainly like to play blue to blue to see what kind of challenge the course can offer at its best.

My Real Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 4, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I've surely played 2000 rounds here since it opened, and it is one of the most beautiful and well kept courses in the US. It has the look and feel of a ball golf course. There are some challenges and it is well laid out.

Cons:

The course is utterly flat, has very little in the way of obstacles, and in tournaments uses the ludicrous painted lines and arbitrary OB in an attempt to compensate for that. It may well be the most played course in the city, but it ranks 3rd out of the 4.

Other Thoughts:

This course is great if you live in the area and will play it .ore than 5 times in a season. Then you can get the season pass. This course felt like they had the extra space in the park and the county thought, "Let make a disc golf course amd see how much money we can get from this. There are so many better, pay to play, courses in Wisconsin that are cheeper than this course. And a lot more fun than this course. This course also seems to have no challenge in it. Each hole seems very similar to each other. Long and straight. This course is wel maintained and thw pads are well marked. It is a little confusing to find the next hole but with a little common sense ir is pretty easy. I dont think that I will come back to this course unless the price dropps.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-A beautiful 27 hole course- definitely worth the season pass for residents as well as the day pass for visitors. It is a must-play in the Madison area!

-The holes vary widely in composition, technicality, and distance. There are short holes, long holes, holes through the woods, holes in the open, and lots of changes in elevation. There are a lot of very, very interesting holes that require technical prowess to par or bogie, but are still not punishing for beginners. The best part of this course, in my opinion, is that each hole has its own character, and no one feels like the play of another (on the first 18).

-Two tee positions and three pin positions.

-Intuitive layout.

-Beautiful signage.

Cons:

-The last nine holes (excluding the island hole) are a little repetitive, and at this point the players with less endurance feel like dipping out. But, on the bright side, the front 18 end at the parking lot and it is easy to leave without playing the full 27 if you feel so inclined.

-No water hazards, if you're into that sort of thing.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a lot of fun for people of all experience levels and I adore going here.

Great overall course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Appeals to all skills levels with two sets of teepads and three different hole locations on each hole. Plenty of holes are very open and forgiving, and the holes that utilize the trees don't have too many in the fairways. Garbage cans at every hole and a bench every few holes. Overall a very clean and deliberate course with no other park entities coming into play.

Cons:

There aren't many negative things you can say about this course. A lot of the holes are pretty open, so some may say that it's a little boring, but I think the overall appearance and challenge of the course is solid. Also, the last 9 holes (19-27) are a little longer than the rest of the course, especially if you play the pro tees.

Other Thoughts:

I'm happy to pay to play at the two county courses near Madison. These courses offer more solitude and a clean, spacious feel compared to the city courses.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Token Creek is an immaculate course that has the maintenance crew of a public golf course. I played on a Friday a few weeks ago (middle of August) and there were multiple, large tractors doing mowing and maintenance work on the course and I even saw a few people weed-whacking. That's what a pay to play course does! Here are my pros:

1) The course has multiple tees which offers a nice variety in the distance and gives players with different skill sets the ability to play the course. There are also multiple pin locations on every hole.

2) The course is extremely fair and has really clean lines. The course didn't have any poke and hope holes and I really appreciate a course that rewards a good shot.

3) The course had a lot of variety (at least with the first 18 holes) on different shot shapes. You had option holes (hole 1, hole 7), RH flick holes (3), long hyzer holes and everything in between.

4) This course had extremely beautiful greens. It doesn't get much better than 6 and 7 with the beautiful rocks and built up greens. Many of the holes had defined greens and I really enjoyed that about the course. It required a placement shot to get onto the green to have a shot at birdie.

5) The course had very defined fairways and really required a lot of thinking about where to land and where not to land. A lot of the course actually felt like a golf course, albeit on a smaller scale. The fairways were cut out of the woods on a lot of holes and it was neat to throw a lot of the holes on the first 18.

6) The Island Hole: This is a pro all by itself. This was the only hole i enjoyed during holes 19 through 27 and it was just a neat hole. It doesn't have the majesty of the famed island hole at TPC at Sawgrass, but hey, this is disc golf and its a start!

7) Hole 10 also has a special place in my heart. From the long tees I think this is just a special par 3. Trying to hit that right window through the trees and going into that guarded green is just a wonderful shot to try to throw. In my opinion this may be the best hole on the course.

8) Navigation: It was actually very easy to get around the course. I didn't have any problem finding where I was going and played a very quick round. I think the $8 fee cuts down on a lot of the ruckus so it was very quiet the day I played.

NOTE: The workers in the park actually stopped me to check to make sure I had a receipt to play the course. This is a pay to play course and they do check receipts so make sure to pay!

Cons:

Token Creek does not have a lot of cons but the cons stand out and edge the rating from a solid 4.0/borderline 4.5 to a 3.5, which is still a very good rating.

For me this course is all about the design. This course has many phenomenal holes and features but there are two design flaws, in my opinion:

A) The course simply has too many tweener holes. I can't remember playing a course with so many holes between 400 and 550 feet. The longer the hole was the more wide open it was so it was really tough to call this kind of hole a par 4. At the same time, I didn't see anyone sniffing a deuce on some of the longer par 3's over 500 feet during the recent A Tier. I think that extending these holes to true par 4 distances or cutting them down to true par 3 distances would add significant value. I think a lot of the holes don't offer enough scoring separation to be a world caliber course.

B) Unfortunately the last 9 holes were just boring. I hate to use that word but there was so little variety in these holes. It just seemed like these holes were an afterthought. Besides the island hole, these 9 holes were not enjoyable to me. These holes were extremely flat with no elevation change and hardly any obstacles but prairie grass. They weren't bad holes by any means but they just didn't have the same feel and fun factor as the first 18. Unfortunately these 9 extra holes actually took away from the rest of the course but I still loved the first 18!

Don't take what I am writing in a negative way - Vallarta is still an awesome course with a lot of great holes. I just wish the last 9 holes were as awesome as the first 18!

Other Thoughts:

To me this course is a tale of two cities: the first 18 holes are a solid 4.0 and really could push the envelope to be a 4.25 or higher. The issue with this course are holes 19 through 27, which I would probably give a 2.5. Most of the time having 27 holes is a positive thing but in this case these holes truly hurt the course. Its still a nice course but in my opinion its probably not worth the $8 fee. I know this keeps the course more playable and beautiful but if I am going to pay $8 for a 27 hole course I'd love for it to have more interesting holes on the last 9.

Lucky to live nearby 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 17, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I'm relatively new to the game, and I like that the short tees on the course give me a fair opportunity at making par with the occasional birdie, and that when I want to stretch myself, I've got the back tees available to make the course even longer. I'm sure people with real monster arms would like those back tees even further back - in many cases, they're only adding 50-75' to the holes.

Maintenance of the course is great, as you'd hope to find on a pay-to-play - all holes are well signed, and the path to the next hole was obvious, even the 1st time I played the course. Most holes even offer separate paths leading to the long and short tees.

There's a decent mix of holes on the course - none of them are so obscenely tight that there's really only one way to play the hole. The pin locations are pretty thoughtfully done - even on the new 9 where trees are fewer and farther between, switching tees completely changes how you approach the hole in some cases.

Cons:

If you're not local enough to play this course and Capital Springs (the other local course operated by Dane County), the $8 fee is a little steep. 6 rounds in a year is the break-even for the annual pass. Dane County passes aren't valid at Madison courses (Elver and Hiestand) or vice versa. They need a revenue-sharing agreement.

Since I live real close by and have a pass, I'll sometimes swing by just to play a quick 9 after work. If you want to just do the front or middle 9, you have to cut through a few paths to make your way back from the 9th basket or to get to the 10th tee. The new 19-27 starts and ends at the parking lot.

A few of the holes are pretty close to I-39/90/94, so a few holes have a fair amount of highway noise - mostly on the new 9 as well as #2 and #3. If the wind is wrong, it's in the background elsewhere, but not objectionable.

The lack of trees on the first few holes as well as the new 9 can make for some windy conditions, too. Prevailing winds in the area tend to blow from the west/southwest in the summer.

Other Thoughts:

Dane County ought to offer an option somewhere in between the $8 day pass and the $48 annual pass. Punch card good for 4 rounds for $20 or something along those lines.

My favorite course in Madison 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 27, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's incredibly well maintained, with nice signs, concrete tees boxes, multiple hole locations, and fairways well-marked by mowing. There's a nice variety of shots required, in both shape and distance. The long tees are well-positioned and generally create a different experience, rather than just making the hole longer.

There's ample parking and rest rooms available. The park rangers keep any discs they find and will return them if you come looking.

Cons:

The rough on some of the holes will consume errant throws.

Other Thoughts:

This is my favorite course in Madison. This was a pay-to-play course long before the city courses started charging, and the condition of the course reflects that. Like its sister course, Capital Springs, this is a great example of how a disc golf course can feel just as nice as a real golf course.

Beautifully maintained 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautifully manicured park with cleanly mowed fairways. I've played this course at least a dozen times and have never seen the maintenance get behind and have never seen garbage on this course - it is always in excellent condition. Two large concrete tees per hole and three basket positions per hole that are rotated on a regular basis with nice signs at each tee with distances for each basket position and benches at most of the tees. The long and short tees provide a fair challenge for players of different skill levels. With several holes over 500 feet from the long tees, there is plenty of length for the big arms, and the short tees provide a more manageable course for the rest. With 27 holes and 3 baskets per hole (except #22 - the "island" hole), there are 79 basket positions, and with most holes, the different basket positions change how to throw your tee shot, and you need to have proficiency in moving the disc in both directions to score well. The landscaping, in the form of rock retaining walls, around some of the baskets is also very nice - makes it look nice and adds a degree of challenge.

Cons:

None that I can think of. Some people might not like pay to play, but to me, this course really shows what disc golf can be when money goes back in to the course.

Other Thoughts:

Although many of the holes look open, most of them force appropriate positioning to set up scoring opportunities. Whether you have big arm or not, you still need to be accurate for your birdie chances. The wooded holes force you to hit tight lines for good birdie chances, and even the more open holes have just enough trees to force you left or right for a good approach line. The only thing I think they could do to improve the course is to have a better basket rotation. The baskets are rotated such that they are all short, all medium, or all long. All short can be a little easy. All long can get a little tough from always having to throw long shots. It would be nice if they would have a third of the holes at each position at any given time, and rotate the baskets with the same frequency they do now between the three positions.

Beautiful course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 5, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I was. very impressed with this course. The thing I noticed before long while playing this course was the open it was, then how much green, mowed grass there was, then I started to notice how the trees were trimmed up - all much different than what I am used to playing on around Iowa City. I like my local courses, but the groomed, well maintained nature of this course was a nice change of pace, a change that frankly I prefer. I thought I had it well with Sugar Bottom, Turkey Creek, and Shaver Park, but I think what Vallarta/Token Creek has to offer plays better to my style and what I want from a course.

And very little poison ivy!

Cons:

Very few cons to say about this course. Maybe more signage leading you to the course once inside the park.

About all that could improve what I saw (and I did not see holes 19+) might be some beverage cart girls!

Great facilities.

Worth the money 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Additional 9 holes this year making it 27 now. Probably because of the cost, it's not full of high schoolers smoking weed. You can actually play with out having to wait behind people.

Cons:

Some holes are a bit easy, but just move back to the pro tee and it'll add a little more difficulty. Some have extremely tall weeds to lose a disc in on the sides of the fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Some courses, 18 just isn't enough. The $8 you're supposed to pay is worth it here for 27 well maintained holes.
