Roughin' it at 'The Vet' 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 27, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Technical lines all over. I love this course because I need a lot of shots in my bag to make a great score. Lots of variance for only par 3's, short to very long. Great use of scrub shrub vegetation and terrain. At some points you feel like you are in a western with all the cactus, yucca and rocky arroyos, but then you walk out into the rest of the oak filled park and open grassy expanses. Lots of places to use hook-thumbers, side-arms, and plenty of space to bomb down hills from elevated tees. I love the multiple pin placements. Great tee pads, they are redoing all of them. Not much water involved, only on a couple of holes. This course has a very secluded feel to it, which I view as a plus.

Cons:

Not many holes that are easy to run for aces. Some of the very long par 3's could be made into par 4's. You really need someone who has played here to help guide you to the baskets (i.e. holes four - eight). Signage could be better, but I just read an article from the Funky Town Flyers news letter that talked about a new grant for The Vet to get new signs. This course has a reputation of eating discs, but if you go out with a local they should be able to advise you where to throw to avoid losing discs. Personally I've never lost a disc here. Bring lots of water, there is a place to stop for water at a pavilion east of hole #11. You'll need it if it's hot, which it normally is. Tee pads are a bit short for my giant legs, probably fine for most wee folk.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a must play, one of the oldest DGCs and best layouts in DFW. The best aspect of this course is the locals and lifers that play here, they are always willing to lend a hand to find a disc or give new comers directions through the wilderness. In fact, if anyone needs a guide let me know, I might be available on Saturdays. Also, can't wait to watch some pros at the VPO this weekend.

Still a Tough one 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Really makes you work on your accuracy
-Beautiful scenery. Some of the holes are just absolutely breathtaking
-Locals are pretty cool.
-The gas station on 12 has water and gatorade and discs.
-One of the most challenging front 9's I have played
-You will need every shot you have to succeed.
-Spectacular views on the entire front 9.
-Great use of elevation, especially in DFW

Cons:

-Can be very crowded on the weekends.
-Very easy to lose badly thrown discs on the front 9. Especially 5-7.
-Snakes are active. Found a few snake skins and a live one.
-Park closes at 11 pm. And they do lock the gates at 11 pm. So watch out if you were night golfing.

Other Thoughts:

As much as this course eats me and spits me back out, I keep coming back for more. The course is very unforgiving to errant shots, but rewards greatly for well placed shots. I will be coming back for more! They have mini's weekly and I think that I will definitely have to check it out.

I absolutely love the front 9. The first 3 holes are quite deceiving on the difficulty of the next 6. Hole 5 is a straight bomb downhill with plenty of trees to grab your shot if you miss your line. But if you do hit your line, it is greatly rewarded with an easy par. Holes 6 and 7 are uphill battles with plenty of scrub and trees guarding the baskets. Holes 8 and 9 open up a little bit, but still have trees guarding the easy lines.

Hole 11 is one of my favorites. Easiest way to get par or a birdie is to flick it or throw a RH backhand anhyzer. The only problem with that is the wall of trees in your way. I've birdied it a few times, but mostly I bogie it thanks to the trees knocking my shot away. Great hole.

The final hole is quite a finisher. Usually the basket is on the hill to the right. A high running flick or anhyzered backhand is good, as long as you have good distance on it. Otherwise, you are stuck in the trees and brush and it makes par a challenge.

All in all, I love this course. Can't wait til I can go back for some more punishment.

Pros:

Great course, requires all shots, lots of challenging pin positions and it is a great work out too.

Cons:

Challenging for beginners. I would recommend playing minis tees first. Lots of debree that might not be kid friendly.

Other Thoughts:

This is the course that teaches you how to play long accurate and develop every variety of shot. I love it. I play it 4 times a week.

Nice course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Big tee pads, good signs on most of them too. Nice layout with some open holes to bomb on and some that require a finesse shot. Loved the elevation changes on several holes. Convienence store down the street carries a lot of plastic.

Cons:

Would be nice if there was something at each pin to show the direction to the next hole. Signs on the tee pads had an arrow to indicate the next hole-problem is I always forget to look for that until its too late. Not a big problem though. Standing water around first pin.

Other Thoughts:

I average about 5-6 over par on the local courses I play, thru two rounds at this course I averaged +8 so I think the difficulty is probably about average to a little above. Really nice course in my opinion. I would recommend to anyone.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pretty easy to navigate I thought. The terrain and shots are very well diverse and gives your game a nice mix of things to do.

Cons:

May not be the best course to play if you're out to throw some discs. Its always been windy on the back 9 when I've played and can be frustrating for beginners. Always seems to be a very very slow game though, Lots of groups play this course, so be prepared to wait, and bring good walking shoes and water

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

great layout, park is well maintained. fun course to play found myself testing myself with different types of shots, several up hill throws really test your arm.

Cons:

if it is your first time playing find a guide or you will be walking around aimlessly for searching for hidden tee pads in the brush, the front 9 is difficult to navigate and is easy to loose yourself. course could use some "next tee" signs it is posted on the tee sign but is not very accurate.

Other Thoughts:

despite adding probably an extra mile walking with a 50lb bag or so i thought the course was fun and challenging... there are horses on the course i almost hit one... kinda spooked it and me, defiantly made for an interesting day. make sure you wear your hiking boots because the terrain is steep at times and i rolled my ankle a bit with running shoes. bring lots of water to keep hydrated too, it gets hot when the sun is beaming.

Verterans Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 20, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Lots of elevation changes
-You will use every shot in your arsenal
-Some good distance shots, and plenty of shots that need a little more finesse
-Tee signs on every holes is nice! (but they don't help you with finding the next tee)
-Not a lot of traffic
-Very clean/well kept, plenty of trash cans
-Friendly locals

Cons:

-Not easy to navigate for first timers. I was lucky to have a friend who had played before, my first time. My second time I had a map, just in case.
-I could see it getting really hot during the summer.
-Not any easy course to hike if you're out of shape.
-Definitely not a beginner course

Other Thoughts:

This course is really fun, but it's pretty difficult. I played it twice today, and I am just wore out.

After hole 12 you can walk across the street to a gas station for some refreshments. They sell discs as well, $10 for any disc, any plastic. Very good deal.

Pros:

-The just got some larger T-pads for most of the back nine.
-Shot variety is great...long and short, wide open and treed, ups and downs, lefts and rights
-Lots of elevations change
-Not huge hole waits if there are any.
-Plenty of "big-arm" holes
-Plenty of finesse holes
-Numerous pin placements per hole
-Clean course and well kept
-Long course
-Right smack dab in the middle of the metroplex
-Nice surrounding park area...

Cons:

-One of the worst for mud if it's rained in the week prior
-If you don't like playing in the wind, it can be really window out there.
-Might run in to some jogers or dog walkers being that there is a walkin' path cut through some of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Another great course right in the middle of DFW. Everyone should get to this course.

Both the front and back nine are loaded with big elevation changes and different types of shots. Mostly spotty trees in long fairway with elevation ups and downs.

Should be played by everyone...totally worth a drive and it's a nice change from the usuall local courses.

Pros:

1. The elevation changes on this course are unmatched in the area!
2. All the shots in your bag will be used.
3. A perfect blend of ace run's, birdie opportunities, and tough par's.
4. One of the best maintained courses that I regularly play on!
5. Concrete Tee's on every hole, plus short tee's on every hole as well!
6. Though it might be hard to find your way around the first time, just ask a local. (Most of 'em are pretty cool.)
7. Different pin positions for every hole! They are moved on occasion.

Cons:

1. The tee signs are in very bad condition, and some of the distances on them are just wrong.
2. It can be hard to navigate around the course for first-timers.
3. As most have said before, it is very hot in the Summer, so bring water!
4. There's not too much seating around the tee's.

Other Thoughts:

This is an awesome course! It is my home course and I'm still not tired of playing it after the 200+ time! This is by far on of the best courses in the area and is worth a look! Have fun out there!

Good ole Veterans 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Really great course that is always fun to go to. The pads are good and most of the baskets are good even for being old. Lots of different lines on most holes that allow for you to use your imagination. There are alot of open holes with some "tight" holes sprinkled in. This course favors a big arm for the most part but there is a mix of some shorties as well. There is some sweet elevation that is used well throughout the park too. Really a great place to play and scores can vary round to round. Probably in top 3 in the area! Course always seems to be in good shape as well.

Cons:

Can get VERY hot! Can get hard to navigate at times for a first timer. The park can get busy with players on the weekend and there are other park goers towards the back that can get in the way and not seem to know you exist. The wak can get tough at times as well.

Other Thoughts:

Bring lots of water and suntan lotion during the summer. Have a good pair of shoes and make sure they are comfortable.

The desert holes could have been laid out better IMO.This can lead to a disc being lost even when thrown on line.

Some of the park locals don't care they're standing between you and the basket,LOL

Some of the holes are little bland and can use new positions. Not necessarily longer just better.

Nice!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 12, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Awesome elevation changes on first 9 holes. Lots of trees and rock base for a fairway. Love how some of the baskets are set high atop hills. There is such a variety of scenery on this course. THe first few holes are open, then your into rocky, hilly terrian that looks otherworldly, then into a moderately wooded section, then opens way up to a park setting. You just can't get bored with that. Each hole seemed unique from the one before. Teepads were large cement. Park itself was fairly clean. Easy parking right next to the first fairway. I would love to live close to this park and would see myself playing this course on a regular basis.

Cons:

Some of the baskets were old though didn't affect the cathing ability too much though. Navigation issues, trying to find the next hole was difficult at times and new signs are defiantely needed to assist with that. Perhaps next hole signs/markers would help alot.

Other Thoughts:

Such a refreshing change from some other courses in the area. The front nine makes you feel like you are in some other world with the rocks and trees. A must go to disc golf park in the area. All kinds of shots needed for this one and you just can't get bored here.

Fun and Challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 20, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This ia a great park with a lot of variety of different shots. You have short and long shots with a good amount of left shots and very few right shots. Elevation plays a big part throughout most of the course where some baskets are placed on top of cliffs to add diffcultly. each hole has nice tee signs that show you each pin position and the distances for each basket and have arrows that direct you to the next tee. The course has nice large concrete tee pads that are just the right size and good baskets with the hole number on them. The course has a practice basket at the beginning of hole #1 so you can get warmed up before your round. The course is very clean and well maintained with garbage cans throughout most of the course and picnic benches on most holes.

Cons:

If you haven't ever played this course, navigation could be an issue. I would probably print out a map off of this site to help you out. Parking is very limited so you might want to get here early to get a spot. There is almost no shade throughout the course, so it can get really hot out there. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen because you will need it. The course can get really crowded on a nice day which is not surprising for this course.

Other Thoughts:

This course is really fun and challenging and is a must play if you are in the DFW area. You will not be dissapointed when playing this course, just get ready to get some exercise because you will get a good work out when you play here.

pure fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 22, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Amazing topography, with a mix of gentle grassy hills dotted with mature trees, to steep rocky/cacti covered hills with oak trees and scrub brush.
- Great tough design allowing big arms to often wail, but need some accuracy especially in wind, and it's key to have good upshots.
- Well balanced
- Cement tee pads, well maintained, course map at bulletin board
- Features some unique shots, stunning fairways and some views over a tree line unlike you normally get in Texas
- Little to NO poison ivy in play, unusual for this region, making it enjoyable and easy to play from a bad drive.

Cons:

- Baskets are kind of tiny, looks like they installed improperly.
- A bit tough to find #5,6,7,8 tee pads without the map. Sign needed after #7 to show how to find #8 as it could be very hard to find!
- Rough on your plastic on a few holes, bring no D/DX plastic.
- Physically tiring making it tough to play 5 rounds back to back, which you will want to do.

Other Thoughts:

Wear sunscreen, bring lots of water, take a picture of the map and bring it with you but it is navigable without. Little/NO Ivy.

Awesome Course!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 28, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has some great long holes for unleashing the power throw as well as some medium distance technical throws through the trees. There are a lot of holes where you are throwing at a basket that you cannot see from the teebox. About half of the holes are on the nice green park area and the other half is very rugged and desertlike. There are dramatic changes in elevation that really enhance the challenge and fun of this course. On hole 5 you throw out about 350 feet over the tops of trees to a basket that you cannot see...definitely my favorite hole out there.

Cons:

Some of the tee boxes are too short, requiring you to adjust your approach. The signs don't show the distances (they do, but are so faded that you can't read them) There are alternate pin positions. Normally this would be good, but when you can't see the basket from the tee, it requires that you walk the hole to find out where the basket is. Hard to navigate. This was my second time to play and I still had a lot of trouble finding the next hole in the rugged portion of the course. Some arrows would be helpful.

Other Thoughts:

I'd give this course a 5 hands down if it were prettier. It is somewhat scenic, but not the prettiest course around. Definitely a disc golfers paradise though. It was my fourth course of the day and I played in 108 degree Texas heat and still had a blast!

The Course of Many Faces 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 17, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has so many different types of holes. It is like playing 4 types of courses in one. There is the wide open, the rocky, the hilly, and the woodsy. Think of it like playing in the Midwest and then heading over to the desert valley for a few holes. After that, you take a jaunt through the Northwest and then through some farmland only to end up at a nice woodsy park. There are bathrooms and lots of trashcans. Those are nice things to have around. ;) I wish more courses did that. They have signs on almost every hole and are really keeping this place looking great!

Cons:

Finding you way from hole to hole through the front 9 is a challenge even with the tee signs pointing the way to the next hole. You might want strong supportive shoes. In other words, I don't really see this as a place for sandals. ;) This course being all par 3's is kind of a stretch, but hey in this sport, we are kind of used to that. It is also a bit frustrating not knowing which basket to throw at, as they seem to change these up regularly.

Other Thoughts:

I would certainly play with someone your first couple of times through. I met a few lost people on that front nine besides myself. ;) It truly is an amazing trek.

The blind shots off some of the cliff-like perches tend to make you think you will never find your disc. However, the paths are so well defined between the vegetation, that searching for your discs is not really that bad if you have a bright contrasting color that is.

Some of these holes are just so fun to play, it makes you want to go back and play them again. You will use all your shots here in a day. The layout of the holes will force you to.

Many of the holes in the desert terrain and Northwest like area leave you with no way to see the baskets from the tee. I do wish the signs would have a dot on them telling you which basket to play, so you don't have to walk ahead on some of those holes before teeing off.

This is one of the better courses in the Fort Worth area. If you are coming here from out of town, this is a must play!!! AND if you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and have not played here, umm...need I say more? :D

Summertime tips 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

As others have stated, Veterans has a lot to offer as far as variety in landscape and shot opportunity. It deserves a high rating due to the uniqueness, style, difficulty, maintenance, and fun level.

Cons:

Beginning players will most likely not like the course due to the difficulty. A seasoned recreational player will find themselves averaging around 70 with a few pars. On the flip side, getting good at this course can only help to improve your overall game. Something to consider for those beginners.

Other Thoughts:

If you are new to this course, these tips may help.

Star and Championship plastic are the way to go on this course. It will really give your DX discs some "character".
Bring at least one buddy. You can spot each other on some of the blind holes (4 and 5 in particular).
Holes 6 and 7 don't need a spotter but it helps to aim for the open areas on the path the first time or two through rather than trying to go for the pin on your drive. The distance is deceiving and will save you a couple strokes and time looking for your discs.
Same with hole 9. Aim for the open spot between the two sets of trees. Most of the time the basket is tucked away in the dogleg left position. You don't want to go past the basket too much, there is a pretty big drop off and during rainy season the water is high.
On hole 10, stay to the right of the big clump of trees. The hole is up the hill and beyond those trees but you don't want to be in them. There is a fence to the left of the trees. Don't go that way.
The rest of the course is easy to find and opens into the park once again.

This is Texas. During the Summer this course plays really hot since there are only a few holes with trees that are really built for shade. Playing early even in July and August is not too bad. We play at 7:00 AM and get in all 18 before 9:30 AM in a group of 4-6 recreational players.

We have played this course 20+ times and have never lost a disc yet. Use a spotter on the blind holes and you'll be fine.

like playing two diffrent areas 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 28, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

the course is a constant change, first 3 open, next 8 or so in a wooded area, that leads you to 3 more wide open, and then more wooded but open area. you will need to be able to throw a variety of shots, from long and open on one, to a hard dog leg left on 3, to tight and straight on 4, to open and very long into the wind or cross winds on the back, and fnishing up on a whole that just isnt right on 18, but it makes for a fun expereince, course is well maintaiend with nice tee pads, does have tee pads and signs that help suggest shots, starts and finishes close to parking lot

Cons:

some arrows or pointers could be helpful to get to the next hole as some are a leap of faith and following trails made by previous disc golfers, some holes share fairways (1/3) so keep your head up (or down depending on how you want to look at it)

Other Thoughts:

be prepared to loose a disc, 4 and 5 are rough as you may loose sight of your disc in a heavily wooded area (i suggest having an orange disc something that sticks out), or a disc that your are willing to part with
