Not recommended for beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lots of variety. Each hole is noticably different from the last. Well-kept

Cons:

I would not recommend this course for novice players. Many of the holes are so close together that only the straightest shots can keep from crossing into another hole's area or into the dense foliage. The thick woods with small, deep valleys easily conceal miss-thrown discs.

Nostalgic but Easy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 2, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course was designed by Steady Ed Headrick the Father of Disc Golf. Great place to learn or take your family. Most people play par 3 for every hole. If you are a well seasoned player you can go here to show others how much you rock.

Cons:

This course is heavily played. At 3:00pm on a weekday you can count on all of the high school kids. From 5:30pm to Dusk on a weekday you can count on everyone with a 9 to 5 job. There are no shot corridors to create challenge but there are some well placed trees that occasional force a curving throw. I have learned to use my approach putter for most of the holes now.

Other Thoughts:

Play this course for aces, because all the distances are reasonable. I've aced about half the holes in my lifetime and had about 5 or 6 that hit chains and bounced out. On a typical trip you will normally hear someone yell on another hole you can't see and can tell that they must have aced or come close. Most people play this course because it just brings back good memories. But If your an advanced player from out of town I don't know that I would go here unless I was doing the Steady Ed Headrick Disc Golf Tour or something like that.

Woodland Mound 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very nicely kept. A good amount of elevation change over creek beds. Nice concrete tee pads. A few blind shots. Mostly short holes a few medium, plenty of ace chances. Most fairways are open but there are plenty of of trees through the course. Fairways are grassy rough is thick wooded areas. There is a nature center by parking where you can get score cards. Weekly doubles event is fun.

Cons:

Flow can be a bit confusing and blind shots are very confusing since hole are close together be sure to walk up the fairway the first time you play to see the hole you are shooting for.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 12, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Woodland Mound has a nice variety of holes from short to long, some blind tees and elevation changes.
Relatively compact to get multiple games in quickly.
Some wide fairways allow for multiple throwing types and disc travel patterns.

Cons:

Over generous par! The first 3 hoels are par 4's and can all be reached with a putter. (ive done it.)
Some hole locations have changed but the plaque at the pad is the same so distances are bit off for a few holes.
A county park pass costs $5 for a year which isn't bad if you live local but there is a $2 daily pass option for a visitor but paying non-the-less is no fun.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a nice course for a quick round somtimes as little as a half an hour or so. The easy par is confidence inspiring but heart breaking when you play elsewear.

My home course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Well-conditioned. All tees and baskets look new (though updated tee signs would be appreciated). Brush and weeds are never a problem.

- Excellent beginner/intermediate course. Straight shots are nearly always rewarded, but creative shotmaking will also shave strokes off your score.

- Good natural beauty. Several holes play over creeks with significant elevation change. Just over the hill by the nature center, you are met with a spectacular view of the Ohio.

Best in the area. On this side of the city, its at least a 30 minute drive to a high-caliber course (Mt. Airy, Lincoln Ridge, Idlewild).

Cons:

- Too confined. Some of the holes might as well share fairways.

- Too short for experienced players. All 18 of these holes are aceable. A pro might only need to break out his driver once on this course.

- Too crowded. As much as I like playing with other people on the course, this course will often draw young children who are easily frustrated by the game.

Other Thoughts:

As most people will not be making long distance trips for this course, the charge to enter the park is negligable, and locals should go ahead and get a county parks pass. Overall, slightly above average.

Woodland Mound 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great Ace Race course.
The Course is very easy to navigate.
Some very good tree and pin placements that make an otherwise easy deuce harder to obtain.
Some holes play over a creek or through small gaps in wooded areas.
Very good for new players and you will hear many people playing course par.
Very nice water fountain and facilities close by.

Cons:

No variation in shots, every hole can be thrown dead straight.
Several of the fairway and baskets play directly into other fairways and it is very easy to get hit by a disc.
Tee's are an assortment of lengths.
Some baskets are crooked or higher off the ground for no reason.
The concrete around the baskets make good shots skip away.
The tee pads signs are old and the distances are not right.
Pay to play, although if you live in the area its not a big deal because it gets you into several other parks as well.

Other Thoughts:

This course is normally very popular. This leads to alot of new players playing and can frustrate some. Also the holes all play very close to each other and it makes it very easy to get hit.

The park itself has alot you can do besides play disc golf. It is a very family friendly atmosphere and a great place for families to go. Close by is a very scenice view of the Ohio river as well as a small amusement park and water park.

beginner course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice scenic county park.
18 baskets.
Beginner friendly.
Holes 12/13 are the only challenge for an advanced player.

Cons:

If you are not a beginner golfer, this course is way too easy. A lot of holes are under 200 feet. The tee signs at ground level and can be covered with dirt and/or mud.I laughed at #2's tees sign, it listed par 4 for a 210' shot. Yearly $5 or $2 parking fee charged.

Other Thoughts:

I played Idlewild and walked Banklick before stopping here. This course just isn't in the same league.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course Maintenance-
Every hole has concrete tee pads, the signs are in the ground and show both pin placement and hole distance. Also the baskets are in good condition and have concrete "greens" around them.

Course Navigation-
It's pretty much impossible to get lost here. The course flows from hole to hole very well, and all the holes for the most part are in the same area.

Cons:

Hole Variety/Course Layout-
Besides a few unique holes, most of the holes are short, wide open, straight on throws. A few fairways are close to other ones and you may have to watch for people throwing at times.

Other Thoughts:

Course Atmosphere-
The course is in a nice park on a big hill that overlooks Kentucky and the Ohio River. There weren't too many people playing when I was there.

-This is a short fun course that you can play for aces on every hole! This is a great course for beginners to learn the game at.

Woodland Mound DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 15, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good course. Mach 5 baskets are in good condition. Asphalt teepads. Mix of open and wooded holes and short holes. Lots of parking near Tee 1. Discs at nature center. Heavily played on weekends. Lots of people to play with. Restrooms near nature center. Trash cans throughout the course.

Cons:

Moves slow. Pay to play (Unless you have yearly park pass). No teesigns. Kind of just guessing. Most holes a very short. Bunched together. Has a good chance of hitting someone or losing a disc.

Other Thoughts:

My first course. Few other courses in the area so go play those too. Short, lightly wooded 18 hole course, installed in 80's. Heavily played. Discs available in nature center. Hamilton County park pass ($) required.

Good to learn on, score well 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

This is a good course to learn on. The park surroundings are wooded, but almost all the holes have a relatively wide landing area - very few tight gaps to shoot through. The holes across the creek - 10, 12 and 13 especially, are among the best. Very easy to find each tee and hole - if you catch this course on a light day, it's the quickest 18 I've come across. You can often see families on the course. This is where my 12-year-old son fell in love with the sport.

Cons:

Long has taken on a new meaning. This is a short course - all sorts of pars are marked on the tees, but it makes most sense to play everything as a par 3. Experts would be mad about making more than two on most of the holes. No multiple tee options, so there's no way to increase the challenge. No real doglegs. There's no significant uphills (not that I mind too much) and there's only one real downhill shot. The course is too compact to make much use of elevation changes. #9 is one of the shortest holes I've seen on a regulation 18 hole design. Only 135 feet, with a huge tree to force your approach very low - kind of like having to get through the tunnel in putt-putt. There's often several groups on the course - then again my family contributes to the congestion, and we don't really mind. You will have to wait for people throwing back toward you on the shared/adjacent fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Since it's part of the county park system, the only cost is the annual county-wide parking fee - five dollars for a sticker that lets you in to all of the parks. As long as you have decent aim you don't need to choose often between hyzer and anhyzer, or forehand-backhand options. After playing lots of extremely tight woods courses, this plays almost more like a regular golf course - the trees are mainly a factor if your shot drifts off too far.

Woodland Mound Park DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 12, 2001 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great 18 holes course with a variety of hole types.
-Baskets - OK condition considering the age of the course.
-Tee Pads - Blacktop tee pads provide for great traction.
-Great variety of lengths. Some short and some long, requiring use of all your different shot techniques.
-Course is not connected with any other parts of the park so you don't have to worry about joggers/walkers.
-Markers - Markers are pretty easy to understand and stated distances seem pretty accurate. It is easy to navigate from hole to hole due to the layout.
-Parking - Parking lot is right across from the first hole and there is plenty.

Cons:

-Pay to play. However, the cost is low and it is well worth the extra few bucks to get the yearly pass.
-Park gets very crowded on weekends. Best time to play is during the week, the earlier the better.

Other Thoughts:

I have not played this course in years since relocating but I still consider it my "home" course. I played my first disc golf here and it is a great course to learn basic shots.
