am i supposed to shimmy up the pole for my disc?

That one is going to be tough being on a hillside. There is one like that in Fort Wayne (bottom of the basket is about 6' high) on level ground. It is definitely different. I don't mind it.

I think a hanging basket is a more interesting way of doing that, and is better aesthetically, but as long as it's used sparingly I think changing basket heights can add interest and challenge to some holes.

There are several around the Charlotte area. Hornet's Nest #9, and a couple at Sugaw Creek.

So, if the bottom is 6' high, and the player is very short, or it is a younger player, how are they suppose to retreive their discs? I agree, it makes for a very challenging shot. Especially if it's used for an optical illusion shot. For instance, the approach is level, but the ground drops off where the basket is located. From a distance, to a player new to the course, the basket would appear to be at normal ground level. The player goes for the chains, misses, and upon reaching the green, discovers they are 30-40 feet down hill. Oops!

6' is not that high unless you are a kid, but those who can't reach over and pull it out, should be able to push it out over the edge. Or use a stick. Or have someone else get it out.

Never played on a course with hanging baskets, I think that'd be cooler than an elevated basket.

Another one not as high but theres a steep bank to the right of the basket in this hole.....makes a 250 footer interesting!

Hammond hill DGC in west Michigan has a few baskets up on these 15-20 foot hight mounds, its pretty weird, if you miss your putt your screwed and you have to putt from the bottom of the mound again, it could turn 1 putt into 4-5 putts pretty easily. Plus if your disc lands on the mound its covered by thorn bushes and poison ivy and three foot tall weeds, so basically any putt thats not in the basket is a disaster. Its kind of like seeing a boat turned into a car going down the highway, its impractical and goofy as hell but still kind of interesting at the same time.

so how do you get your disc out?

There's only one elevated basket on any of the local courses in my area. Played the course once. I didn't mind the elevated basket. It had a brick structure built underneath of it, you could use the bricks for steps to help retrieve the disc.

I prefer the basket on a mound concept because, as Solomon keeps asking, it lets you get your disc out.

I like the tall pole ...thats why I started the thread...it messes with your sense of perception.

Mostly I think they are gimmicky. And Ugly!
The extra long pole, or pole in a pole, or pole on a pvc pipe filled with cement raised baskets are ugly. As well as the extreme pyramids (Morley Field, Sylmar #11).... Tacky!

However a few I have seen are well done. I like the ones that build a brick wall stepped retaining wall thing (Winthrop Gold #9,10, Sylmar #2, 18) and put the regular sized basket on top...

Or, when the baskets are raised up using natural things like tree stumps (Golden Gate #11, Bracketts #5) or a boulder (Brackett's #9, Renny Gold #8,17)... these look cool and don't look Tacky! And, add flavor to a course.

That's just me though.

so how do you get your disc out?

You have to reach your hand through the bottom and flick the disc over the rim and back out of the basket.

What's a DROT?

And... I don't know what you do if you disc lands on top. Look for a stick I guess.

I've long thought that altering basket height would go a long way towards making holes tougher/easier, and I'd support variable height baskets, where height could be changed around to suit circumstances. Casual play? Baskets in low position. General tourney play? Middle position. Top caliber players? High position. Higher baskets generally increase the risk of any putt attempted and taller basket would allow courses to be made harder without stretching holes, remaking tee pads, putting out yellow rope, etc.

Not too difficult a proposition, just needing telescoping poles and some sort of a stop to set position.

Think of taller baskets as creating putting greens with more slope.

Not completely sure, but that may not be up to specs when it comes to the distance between the ground and the baslet.

No spec for installation. Just a spec for height above grade as produced. In other words, manufacturers have a guideline for producing their permanent targets to fall in a certain height range above ground if installed according to the manufacturers instructions. However, there are no guidelines at this time for max or min height a basket has to actually be installed on a course used for competition.

Hole #1 at CMC Glenwood Springs (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1137&mode=ci)

You tee off from the left and there is a big drop off right behind it (to the right in the pic). Its a short hole but birdie putts are risky unless you're parked really close to the basket.

I think a higher basket is easier to throw at then a short basket, but definately poses retreaval issues.

true I have thought the same and even considered putting from knees but am afraid of the ridicule I'd receive!

I putt from my knees when I'm putting downhill so that I'm closer to being level with the basket, I don't think there's anything wrong with getting on your knees to throw if it gives you a better look.

I'm 6'3" and there are many taller than me...I might give this a shot during a solo round and if anyone gives me ****..I will just say Mashnut told me so!

I think its dumb. Not only is it not aesthetically pleasing but it makes it difficult if not almost impossible for short folks to retrieve their disc. And taking the disc out of a basket should be the most pleasant time for each hole whether its a YIPEE, or a FINALLY moment.

Mounded baskets does the same thing without the struggle to retrieve the disc.

There is frequent and sometimes heated debate about legitimizing the sport, what par should be, lack of standardization, getting kids involved, getting more women to play, etc. Varying basket height furthers the problem. It does nothing to help the problem.

Seneca Hole 3 has a raised pin position with a built up box with steps so the basket is about 7' off the ground. I like that one, it adds something different to the rest of the course.

Hawk Hallow Hole 10 I think has a really low basket which was kinda neat. There are a couple other holes where the basket is normal height, but the landscape makes them quite interesting positions with a high risk/reward factor.

hawk hollow #10 is in really sandy soil and likes to sink. i kind of like the effect so i let it go.
