Been working on next tee signs for Giles Run.
Here's the prototype (fourth try) which will be placed next to the tee sign on 17 red.

May take a while to do some more, need 50 degree temps to paint outdoors.

really nice looking...i wish the signage on my local courses were anywhere near comparable to some of the stuff i've seen on this site.
potentially stupid question: why do you need to direct people from hole 17s tee to hole 7?

I wish they would put some up at mason sports park. the first time i played we saw hole 8 basket thinking it was basket 4 and couldnt find the tee. it is by the river. also from hole 2 to 3

Giles is a huge course (46 acres) with 9 holes on the northern and southern sides of a valley.
There are are a few long walks between the holes and two humongous walks between the nines. Finding the next tee is almost impossible without a map and intuition usually leaves players lost.
Next tee "signage" has been mentioned by numerous reviewers (after the thorns and long walks)
These signs are somewhat temporary and are surely susceptible to vandalism.
A home depot stake, lots of sanding, a 2x4, letter/number templates, two paint colors and 2 screws.
I will eventually request more permanant versions from Fairfax Co. Park Authority when I am sure that placement, verbage and visibility are adequate.

Players finishing hole 6 are looking right at the tee for hole 17. They have no idea that they need to walk 450 feet around the pond to get to hole 7.
I have placed red electric tape, hanging from the specific spoke on the bottom of each basket, pointing in the direction of the next tee but most players don't realize what it means.

Good for you for taking the time and effort to fix things like that about your local course. Too many clubs or course maintainers get in the mode of "I know my way around, so what's the big deal?" and don't worry at all about players playing for the first time.

i knew there'd be a good reason!
your dedication, and attention, to improving the course(s) under your care is impressive and inspiring. it seems as though i've read quite a few posts from you detailing the work you've done at giles and bluemont (hope i'm remebering the course names correctly) to improve the maintenance, aesthetics, and playability of these courses.
keep on doing the good work.

All of the bottom of the bucket metal form V's. Some courses have begun painting the two that point in the direction of the next tee. This is an unobtrusive and ingenious way of sending you in the proper direction; down the proper path.

I've seen that done on a few courses and I liked it. The red powder coated and galvanazied mach 3's at Giles are just too pretty to paint.
Originally considered hanging plastic arrows from the appropriate basket spoke using plastic zip strips to avoid abrasion and rust. Couldn't find durable plastic (red plexiglass) arrows for a reasonable price.
Now that I think about it, I could probably just cut the 24 inch stake down to 8 or 10 inches, drill two holes through it and hang it from a basket spoke with some 1/4 inch rope. This would work as long as the basket is never moved to another position.

Timber, I know we've given the Saturday work crews a rest for a bit while we recuperate from the push prior to the Wind Up, but if you want some help and another set of hands with this sign project let me know. Gotta get that work crew fix and keep the good karma flowing ;)

Saw this at a course in Grand Rapids, Michigan and added to home course.
I put a piece vinyl tape on the top ring of the basket located in the direction of the next tee. The tapes are color coded to the tees (White and blue). There is a sign at the main bulletin board explaining the reason for the tape. The method is very cheap and easy.
Doesn't work great on those exceptionally difficult situations, but for the cost of a couple rolls of 1/2 inch vinyl tape rolls and an hour of time the method is pretty effective.

Great Course.....be prepared for Thorns! Probably best enjoyed in winter but I have a feeling those thorns don't hibernate I think they just get more pissed off when it's cold......Probably one of the best open air courses you will play....it's just the landing that is so scary!!!!

Painted or taped spokes are a great way to point to the next tee, and I think it's a really good idea to explain it at the beginning of the course. I always look for that, but I've talked to a number of players who didn't know what that meant, and so weren't taking advantage of the navigation help.

How about a set of NexTEEs(tm) from Whirld Sports (Disclosure: I am with Whirld Sports, and felt that since this thread is here, I should reply. This thread is one of the reasons we are in business)
