I'm thinking of taking the gf on a roadtrip east over the holidays for a round. I know there are a lot of good courses around Rochester. What's your recommendation for a good time at this time of year?

I am heading to Rochester in the morning. I would recomend Basil Marella and parma if you have a guide. Baker is very popular, but if it is snowy I don't like it.
I may go to Buffalo for New Years Day (Como Lake)
Ellison wil probably be missing baskets due to sledding and MCC is nice, but may be super muddy.

No guide. At least I don't think we'll have a guide. I'm thinking more along the lines of spur of the moment. We don't mind the snow, mud, ice, or slush. Just looking for a little change of pace and a pretty winter location. And nothing overly technical for a first time out in less than ideal conditions.

We have yest to play at Como Lake. Don't know why. We've been talking about it. But when we travel that far, we go a little further and go to Emery.

Basil is good without a guide, I can probably be there with 45 minutes notice depending upon the day. Sawyer is 1/2 mile away, from basil, but not a great course.

WillACarpenter will guide most western Ny courses, but like you I mostly play spontaneously so I never have time to contact anyone.

Go to Chili. Concrete teepads at this time of the year is a plus.

That's really good to know. Cross that off the list till spring.

True that. I lost a couple strokes at Wilson due to slips. With less than half of my right achilles tendon, I'm very paranoid about completely rupturing it and never walking again.

Baker and Chili are the samething (for non NY-ers reading this)
I think if the snow is low Chili is a safe bet, and an incredible course. I just hate searching the wide open areas for discs that are buried. If there is snow I prefer wooded courses.

Basil. Chili or MCC if spontaneous and in winter.
Disc Jon and I will be playing tomorrow. We should all meet up!

Okay so all you lazy (read normal) people are still sleeping, and I'm just getting home from work. So I can't really talk to you guys to make any plans for today as of yet. So I'm going to make very tenative plans and we'll see what comes of it.
I, and maybe my dad, plan on playing Basil (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=7). Perhaps it will be at sometime around noon. This will give me some time to nap and him time to get back from running my mom around, and time for us to get ready and get up there.
Also time for DiscJon to wake up, and maybe time for SimpleTwist to come in to town. We'll see what's up then.
If you want to meet up, please send me an email or PM through here.

Keep driving east til you hit Albany. At Exit 23 on I-87, hang a right(southbound) on Route 9W for 12 miles. Turn right(westbound) at Route 143 for 2.5 miles then stay right at Starr Road(just before Hannicroix Creek). One mile on left is the "J"......... enjoy 27 holes of NY's best !

A little far for a spur of the moment road trip. But we are going to Troy to see David Grisman in Feb. If it isn't too far that might be an option.

Joseph Davis is my home course. And we've been playing Wilson fairly regularly too. Fifteen minutes or less driveway to parking lot from JD.

Troy to J park is like 30 mins. PM me when you'll be there I'll happily guide you though J park. Could even meet you somewhere by Troy and show you the way to the "J" I'm free on weekends.

I'm sure we will be playing on the 26th, 27th and 28th. And I'll expect that PM. For the record, does smoking the kynd bother you? Not that it's a show stopper, just don't want to offend.

:) smoking doesn't bother me at all unless its done infront of kids. I just throw practice drives or chat while people are smoking.

UPDATE: WillACarpenter and Prerube will be playing at Basil TODAY just before NOON if anybody wants to stop out and throw with us.
We'll also have 2 other guys with us, a local that apparently rocks socks, and my dad. Who sucks only a few strokes more than me...meaning he can win if I find more trees than he does...

prerube and I met up today, we were joined by my father, prerube's local friend Tim (reminds me of Bob...DiscJon you know exactly who I mean) and a local pro named Troy decided to join us.
It was a BLAST! I had some bad holes..some of the best of my life a couple times as well. It was a lot of fun, and I just wished we could have played a ton more!

I'm on the left and Mr. Prerube is on the right with a naughty snow ball. You can see that we are right next to the infamous Crap Basket (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9205) which was blissfully crap free today!
I'm sure prerube will post some more pictures later...he had that damn camera out all day ;)

I only took 4 pictures. I am not as good as I played today. I tore up the front 9, back 9 evened things out.
WillACarpenter
12-24-2009, 05:36 PM
I had problems on the front 3...4, and 5 were good, 6 was average, 7 worked out well...I couldn't pull together hole 8...but when we were looking for my dad's mitten I got a 4...which is par since that's the only 4 on the course! I was excited.
Back 9 was more consistent except for that tree fest on hole 18...oi!

We are heading out for Wilson in about an hour. Maybe JD, maybe both, but Wilson first. Gray Camry with a few hippy, stoner stickers on it.

It looks like I may be done in NY, I play in snow, but I have a limit. Also gas money is running low.
I'll be in Rochester tomorrow returning a disc I found. I am not sure how long my wife and I are staying, I can't risk getting snowed in. Right now Rochester weather looks rough!
