This summer I will be going on a road trip from Orlando to Boston on I 95. My question to you is what courses are close to the interstate that are must plays in your state?

While there are many good courses in Maryland not too far (20~30 minutes each way) off of I95 (Seneca, Patapsco, Druid, and Scarboro), a top quality course only a few (less than 5) minutes is Rockburn http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=97. I'm a guide, so let me know when you're coming thru, and if I'm around, we can throw a round - or two.

While I'm not from Delaware, I've played a lot of courses there, and there are many top-notch courses in Delaware not far off I95. I'd suggest you read the reviews of Brandywine, Carousel, and Iron Hill, and see which sounds most like the type of course you prefer.

Of the three, I've only played Brandywine, but I've heard nothng but good things about the other two, and plan on visiting them the first half of next year.

Here are some courses off of I95 in the Mid-Atlantic region that I would recommend:

Giles Run (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2473) - less than 5 minutes off of 95, just south of DC
Loriella Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=593) - about 10 minutes off of 95, about half way between DC and Richmond
Bryan Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=776) - less than 5 minutes off of 95, in Richmond
4 courses in Rocky Mt, NC - very close to each other and to 95
Luther Britt Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/reviews.php?id=1503&mode=rev) - less than 5 minutes from 95, about 30 minutes north of the SC border

I would also second swatso recommendation of Rockburn.

Take a look at traveling on I-81 instead of I-95.

Going north take 17 just north of Fredricksburg to 66 and then to 81. 81 all the way north to Scranton/Wilkesburry and the I-84 over and through CT. Heading south just reverse all of the above.

I've traveled down to Myrtle Beach the last couple of years this way and not only is it beautiful country, you get away from all the traffic on I-95. Google maps puts it 1 hour longer I think but if you miss 1 accident on I-95 (one if you're lucky) you make up for it.

Around Savannah, GA, Tom Triplett (Pooler, GA) and The Sarge (Hardeeville, SC) are both virtually on the interstate exit ramps. Both pretty highly regarded, only perhaps 20 miles apart, and the only respectable courses along I-95 on the SC/GA stretch. You'll be 5 or 6 hours on the road at that point, probably a perfect time to stop and play.

To expand on the I-81 alternative theme....

You might check into, once you get into SC, taking I-26 to Columbia, I-77 north to I-81, etc. I've gone from Columbia to Washington, DC on part of this route....much less traffic, MUCH nicer drive, a little longer but worth it.

This would bring a whole different batch of courses into play, including the fine selection in Charlotte.

If this is a 2 way trip definetely take 95 one way and 81 the other......off 95 in Delaware there are
3 (Iron Hill, Brandywine, and Carousel which are minutes from each other and minutes from I-95) in MD there is the beltway and Seneca and Patapsco are nearby. VA has many close by including Giles...5 seconds off the Ramp and The Grange.
On the way back, If you take 81 you can play Paw Paw and Whispering Falls in PA as well b4 deciding to hit 78 easst the Lehigh Valley and the 4-5 premeire courses there. Down South on 81 theres a multitude of courses to hit on 81.

Lehigh Valley and Delaware give you a bunch of solid plays close to one another.
If your looking for quick off the highway access I think Iron Hill in Delaware and Giles are both less than 60 seconds from 95 and Whispering Falls is a short simple drive off of 81 in Greencastle PA.

I really like Whispering Falls and think it's underrated. I also think Iron Hill is one of those you have to experience to believe it type courses. Just Nasty Hard!

pawpaw is still a solid hour from i-81.

christiansburg, staunton, signal view are all very close to it in va though and all worth playing.

Agreed Biscoe....I wasnt sure how much time he had.....but how often are you a mere hr from Paw Paw in your life? With 2 difficult courses that is more of a day trip than a diversion from driving, you are correct.

Iron Hill is all woods, all long, gradual elevation, and extremely difficult. Most report it as the most challenging grueling course they have ever played. A masochists good time.
Brandywine is all open, avg distances, extreme elevations, and more forgiving than Iron Hill. Most report it as one of the funnest courses theyve played. A hedonists good time.

brandywine=boring (i know this is not a generally held opinion)

I know what you are saying...Only half the holes there are really interesting ..I think it's just so rare to get so much uncluttered elevation in the Northeast thats its seen as a novelty and fun. The second time I played was definetely a bit different from the first time. In fact I'd rather play it from 10-18 first as the beauty on hole 4 is the climax. Its still above avg though.

I've played most of the courses close (~15 minutes one-way) to I81 between Harrisburg and Knoxville. While there are many solid courses, these would be my recommendations:

Greencastle, PA Whispering Falls DGC
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2416
Very challenging, great variety

Maurertown, VA Signal View DGC
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2475
Only nine holes but three tee locations, one of my favourites

Dublin, VA Randolph Park DGC
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2934
Nice distro of wooded/open - always enjoy a round here

I won't go farther West because I assume you'd take I77 South, and not enter Tennessee

And finally, since I64 connects I81 and I95 ...
Charlottesville, VA Walnut Creek Park
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=785
Another one of my favourite five

Read the reviews, and see what catches your fancy!

You should definitely check out The Grange and Hawk Hollow or you'll drive by the best course on your trip.
