Wondering what most prefer in a single course. I use this method to categorize a nine hole course:
1-open field hole (1 open)
2-open field then into woods (.5 open, .5 woods)
3-woods hole(1 woods)
4-woods hole(1 woods)
5-woods then back into open hole(.5 open, .5 woods)
6-open hole with some trees throughout(.5 open, .5 woods)
7-open back into woods(.5 open, .5 woods)
8-woods(1 woods)
9-open field hole to finish(1 open)

4 open and 5 woods for 9 holes

So how much of a course do you like to be wooded for an 18 hole course?

I like the idea of 12 wooded to 6 open
In no particular order
2 pure open holes utilizing elevation (1 up and 1 down)
A few of those field holes into a gap then tunnel holes.
A few from a tunnel into a clearing.
Then perhaps woods-clearing-woods.
An open with trees sprinkled in to create lines/difficulty.
Then just 12 pure woods holes.

I say my ideal is
3 heavily wooded
6 tightly wooded but not super thick
3 lightly wooded
3 open fairways defined by thick woods
3 wide open field type shots

50/50 for me. Doesn't mean that the open holes can't have a tree or two near the basket or in/near the fairway. By woods, I refer to tunnel shots or thick disasters. A "doorway" adds a moderate challenge but doesn't take you completely out of play.

A good course (IMO) has a blend of holes, going back and forth through levels of ease/difficulty/distance

i chose 50/50 but honestly any variety is good for me

the best holes imo often contain elements of both. 18 wooded holes or 18 wide open ones both suck.

Personally im a big fan of heavily wooded holes. A couple bombers holes tossed in there are always nice to mix it up if im blasting trees all day. But using accuracy and finesse are a big part of my game since i dont have a cannon arm. And threading a 300 footer through the jungle for a bird is a great feeling.

Even on a course with 17 wooded holes, if the 18th hole is wide open like a soccer field, I wouldn't consider that good. Good holes are good holes regardless of how many are wooded or more open. I'm more interested in variety of elevation, hazards and length plus left-right-straight balance than the foliage density per se.

12/6. Although I'd like half of the wooded holes to be tight, and the other half have a well defined fairway but in the woods still.

I voted 12/6. I like variety, but prefer wooded.

I think this poll should be in conjunction will elevation.

I've always been a fan of more wooded than open, but you should always have a few, I liked the 6 option to be able to air things out a bit and keep the course diverse.

I went with 12/6, but would prefer 14/4. I love wooded holes, but a few open ones are nice to fine tune drives.

Like others, I like more wooded than open, but a few open holes on the course add some variety, though I would definitely rather play an all wooded course than an all open course.

I like holes that weave in and out of the woods, giving you sweet gaps to hit. So roughly I like 3/4 of my holes wooded with a few of those being really tight, line specific holes like a sharp hyzer bomb hole for instance.

Bring on the trees! I miss them here in Phoenix. I prefer to have heavily wooded, but throw in 1 or 2 holes that are wide open to let it fly.

The longer I play, the more I appreciate wooded holes. A few mostly open holes is fine as long as there is some type of obstacles to overcome. Flat, wide open holes just aren't that inspiring.

I like 50/50. Half to work on technical shots, half to try to throw your arm off going for D.

50/50. Really just depends what kind of mood I am in. Sometimes I pick the short wooded course and sometimes I go to the mostly open one.

I went 12 / 6. I very much prefer wooded holes, but the most important factor to me is the variety of shots needed to execute a course.

A single poke and hope hole is acceptable.

The other end of the spectrum, there is a place for a single long wide open hole. I learned the sport on wooded courses and I typically play these type courses. I found early on that when I played at a course with a wide open hole how I had difficulty judging approach distance (so not to two putt) with nothing to use as a frame of reference. I had to make an effort to overcome this "fear".
