myself (dahig), eric g. (hognosesucker), and my son are going to be in town the weekend of jan. 30th - feb. 2nd.
i made a road trip to houston in dec. 08',played several fine area courses (tom bass, oak meadows, shawshank, sping valley, moffit, macgregor.jim mazola, terramont and a couple of others that their names escape me).
some of these i want to introduce my road trip companions to (oak meadows, sping valley, shawshank) i have others that didn't make it last time that need to be played this time(river grove in kingwood, mcdade in conroe, jack brooks in hitchcock).
we are starting to get a daily plan/schedule together, but before we finalize it was wondering if something new/fun has cropped up since my last visit.
also if any of you local boys would like to meet up with us for a round or two?
wadda ya say ERicj and midnightbiker?

I might be free to hook up with you guys for a round or two, especially if you head down to the Southwest side of town.
Note that there's a charity tourney down in Lake Jackson on the 30th.

Hopefully the kid will be born by then, but PM me anyway when it gets closer to the date because you'll need a guide anyway for Oak Meadows who is allowed on the course in case the cop is there. It's currently private - note local forums and reviews, but JRW(DGCR# 6535), Miller(2462), or myself can get out there. JRW actually lives next to the course, and is a great contact as well. It really is a fun course. Long at almost 7000', the shorter holes are tight and the open longs are long usually with some water in play. I managed a 7 over a few days ago, and wouldn't mind another crack at it.
Note - Sugarland is Eric territory. I'm the northwest guy. :)
BTW - Make sure you check out - Windwood Church (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3634&mode=ci) - fantastic new course in NW Houston.

I haven't finalized anything with dahig yet, but I'd like to do 3 different areas, a northern trip which includes Spring Valley, McDade and Shawshank which would probably be on Monday so we can play the whole Spring Vlley course, a northern rim trip Oak Meadow, Windwood, and Kingwood, and a South side trip which would include Jack Brooks (2) and probably something in Eric Js neighborhood...but I think dahig and I are definitely open to suggestions. Also I'd like to unload my '10 travel tag and I saw that a bunch of you guys have them.

So what's the deal with oak meadows anyway? I'd like to get at least a round in with all the active members on here. Anything we should know schedule wise to plan theses three trips? I saw that 9 of the holes at Spring Vlley are closed on the weekends, any other little caveats to houston golf we should know? Is it OK to play Windwood on Sunday? that sort of thing

Oak Meadows must be played Monday-Friday as it is marshalled on the wekeends. Great all around course.
Spring Valley is not to be missed and only the "power 9" which are 9 holes on the ball golf course is closed on the weekend. But don't worry, IMO the fiinesse 18 is the main attraction. Here's (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/reviews.php?id=1858&page=1&mode=rev#18205) a review I posted recently.
Overall, I think Houston is a great destination city for DG. The thread has pretty much hit all the high lights. I haven't played either Jack Brooks course (one recently added) but heard great things.

Yes, Windwood is closed until noon on Sunday out of respect for the church. It is also a school on the weekdays, so please check in at the front desk before playing M-F. Nothing big - just a good safety thing, plus they'll give you a course map when you check in.
The marshal is hit an miss at Oak Meadows - yes usually they are there more on the weekend, but they could be there at any time, so make sure you heed my previous suggestions. If you can catch Windwood and Oak Meadows, and Spring Valley in one day - that's a big day with driving. Might I suggest: (However a hardcore player could combine things)
Day one north: McDade Park (18), Spring Valley(18), and Terramont Park(9)
Day two northwest: Northside Comm Church (9), Woodwind Church(18), Oak Meadows(18)
Day three southeast & Downtown: Jim Mozola(9), Taylor Lake(18), Miramar Park(9) (only if you have time, but the weakest of what I've listed), Jack Brooks(36) both courses
Day four southwest: Missouri City Comm Park(9), The LINKS(18), River Pointe Church(9), If you call ahead or ask Eric you may also be able to get to play the Erickson/Payne course(9)
Day four IMO is the weakest of the four days, but that my friend is a recommendation for a tour de Houston. I haven't played Taylor Lake, River Pointe, and the Payne home, but I hear good things about them all. And yes, I listed the courses in order I would play them in the day from the I'm coming from the north angle.

are there problems out there? is it a good choice to incude in our travels?
thought midnight biker would have chimed in on it...isn't that his home course?

It is and he loves it. However not many other people are fans when there are a lot better courses out there to play. It might not be as bad right now because of winter, but it's stupid tight and full of spiders in the summer.
Yes, I nasty banana spiders that are 3-4' big and make webs in your face are a reason not to like a course :D
Like I say - It's not horrible, but not worth it compared to the others I previously mentioned.

If they were 3-4' big you can bet pretty much no one would play there. But 3-4" is probably more accurate. ;)

Super aggressive schedule.
Best advice I'd give on that schedule is to do the Northern stuff on Monday / Tuesday. That'll help you avoid any issues on Spring Valley, Oak Meadow, and Windwood.
His "Day 4" courses don't get nearly as much play so they'd work better schedule-wise on the weekend.
For "Day 3" the Brooks courses are the "must" there, do those first and work your way back into town.
Other tidbits:
I think Taylor Lake is down to 15 holes currently.
I'd skip Miramar.
Mo.City Community Park has nine baskets, but the Alt tees are just as good or better than the mains so consider that as 18. But you need a guide to find the alts (or a map and good eyes, the alt bricks are small).
If you guys have big gun arms you might enjoy the Tom Bass Park courses as well. Not sure what you're into.

Just noticed this thread. I would definately be up for a round out at Oak Meadow on Sunday January 31st. If you, or any other local DGCR members, want to join send me a PM. It would help if I had a list of names of those coming so I could let the gate gaurd know who my guest are to avoid having anyone turned away.

I would suggest SV, Brooks, Windwood, and Shawshank with the rest being kinda...meh.

3'-4' definitely would be a deterrent for most people though wouldn't it!

So, the drive down to houston will take all day on friday (Jan 29) as we are stopping in Memphis to play, then Saturday Jan 30-Monday Feb 1 we will be playing in houston from dawn till dusk hopefully then then we'll be leaving Tues (Feb 2) very early to hit up Shreveport LA, then back home. I think the goal is to get at least 54 holes a day for the time we are in Houston.
So...Sat, Sun, Mon is Houston
I don't think I want to play Kingwood if the spiders are 3-4' but we could probably get by :)
JRW III- I think sunday would be fine for oak meadows as long as we have a "guest pass" for us and whoever else.
Scooter- I don't think we'll be making it to Austin, as it's already quite the jaunt down from IL and our host is in Houston, but the golf there does sound nice.
I think we would be up for pretty much any kind of golf...our home course is long (7700'-red, 9400' blue), but still pretty tight. We have no preferences as long as we are throwing plastic :), although I'm not a huge fan of wide open courses.
Also, any good microbrew pubs in the Houston area? I'd like to get a pint at some point during the weekend.
Thanks for all the input!

Our home course is Foundation in Centralia, and I go over to STL pretty often...but at least there is some variety in Houston, the good thing about so many courses in one area is that the golf gets spread out pretty decently...but I'm just excited to see some new dg terrain, and play golf in shorts again :)

That and the brown water of death. :D

BTW - The only two decent elevation courses in Houston - Terramont(9) & Jack Brooks - Cedar Hills(18).

Based off your three day schedule - I just take out day 4, or...
Day 1: McDade, Terramont, Spring Valley, Windwood, and Oak Meadows (81 total holes)
Day 2: Mazola, Jack Brooks (both), Tom Bass (both) (81 total holes)
Day 3: Missouri City, The LINKS, River Pointe, Imperial, and Agnes Moffitt (72 total holes)
You said you were going balls to the wall, so that is three full days with day one being by far the best and hardest to pull off. I usually play these types of days if it's just me or one other person for speed purposes. Day two I modified based on your home course length, and Tom Bass is okay - but not awesome. Plus you have more in the same area. Day three includes more nine holers to get the Houston feel, and Anges Moffitt just so you can play the most popular course (by usage) in Houston.

Wow man you do go balls to the wall. That might be bit more than we can chew, dahig (dave) would have the final say on that though as he is the old fart in our group. Daylight is the other limiting factor...I think last time I checked sun up at 7:15 down at 505. Dave is going to work on the schedule tomorrow and then check it with me. Day 2: Mazola, Jack Brooks (both), Tom Bass (both) (81 total holes)
Day 3: Missouri City, The LINKS, River Pointe, Imperial, and Agnes Moffitt (72 total holes).
I want to emphasize the first day again. If the best course is 1 point, and the 20th best is 20 points (based on review ranking), consider the following point totals:
Day 1: McDade-2; Terramont-8; Spring Valley-4; Windwood-9; Oak Meadows-1 Total Points: 24 (5 courses)
Day 2: Mazola-12; Jack Brooks-3,6; Tom Bass-22,26 Total Points: 69 (5 courses)
Day 3: Missouri City-11; The LINKS-5; River Pointe-13; Imperial-17; Anges Moffitt-18 Total Points: 64 (5 courses)
As you can see, even taking out a few courses from days 2 or days 3 - you can tell that your bread and butter is really the first day. So, if the three day total is too much I would recommend going all out the first day and then cutting out courses on the following days as time allows.
Hope this info helps you in your decisions.

We have alot of good courses here, in Houston. But i think there is one that stands above the rest. Shawshank, IMO, is the best course. It is worth the extra long drive to make sure you can play it. And while you are up there you might as well play McDade, also a very great course.

I would be okay with not playing Imperial or Moffitt - just trying to work within the perimeters. Plus I never think of Shawshank as a Houston course, however - it certainly is better than any previously listed. I also took off the Erickson Payne because I don't know if they could get on. However, if you played Erickson/Payne - totally take out Imperial. Moffitt isn't the best either, but you know I had to give it some love.
Oak Meadow Park is rated at a 4.05, and at this point probably only Shawshank is better. Jack Brooks Cedar Hills is close though.
Moffitt... Imperial... no way.
And you dropped Erickson/Payne from the list.
Shawshank is the best in the area, unfortunately you'd easily burn 90 minutes just driving there.
Okay my list of Houston area courses is below generally sorted from best to worst. Don't think I left any out. See if that helps you decide which ones to play. Just my http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q193/ejubin/2c.gif

Oak Meadow is good.
But I love the variety at The LINKS. I don't think anyone's played the red/short tees forever so forget about them. But the blue/long tees will offer most INT/ADV players a great risk/reward experience. The white/Largo/championship tees force you to throw a real drive and a real upshot/approach to be in position for a putt on just about every hole. We (mostly me, with some help from Neal) also designed a temporary orange/alt layout for use at the tourney a couple weeks back. The orange layout plays similar in length and challenge to the blues but with a lot of different shots. I've uploaded the orange map to DGCR and indicated that those tees are unmarked; but if you want to play it you can get a good idea of where the tees are from the map.

It's a different beast when the ponds are low or dry as the threat of just an OB stroke doesn't get in your head nearly as much as the threat of the lost disc. At least in non-tourney play. ;)

We're planning on starting as early as possible each day...about 3 hrs a round...going to be tight to get everything in. We are going to have a foursome already, at least for Sat. and Sunday trips, so if we could coordinate who wants to join by course it would help us out tremendously with time. Or just as a thought we have some sweet glow gear if you guys want to do a big get-together for a glow round, besides the day round. Don't know if any permission must be asked, may have to go outlaw style.

If you're coming from the south side of town you head north to 290. Take 290 out to Fry Rd and head over to Oak Meadow first. From Oak Meadow take Fry back up to 290, stay on frontage rd, and get on Spring Cypress to Windwood. Once done with Windwood get back on Spring Cypress, turn north on TC Jester to 2920, cut over to Gosling and then north to Spring Valley. Here's a link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=29.957570,+-95.719811+(Oak+Meadow+Park+DGC)&daddr=30.013596,+-95.579832+(Windwood+Presbyterian+DGC)+to:%2B30%C2% B0+7'+45.07%22,+-95%C2%B0+30'+17.95%22+(Spring+Valley+DGC)&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=30.129307,-95.504987&sspn=0.006922,0.01399&g=30.129187,+-95.504985&ie=UTF8&ll=30.038783,-95.615387&spn=0.229148,0.447693&z=12
Drive time from Oak Meadow to Windwood should be about 20 minutes. Windwood to Spring Valley another 20-25. If you want to let me know where you're coming from Sunday morning to get there I (or someone else) can help with that too.

FYI: here's the skinny on the missing basket at Brooks:
Sometime during the night last Friday #17 basket was removed from its spot on the course. For reasons unknown, the basket was simply rolled in to the adjacent pond. A parks employee and a Brooks Brother recovered the basket early Saturday morning. The basket will be reinstalled with a larger footing soon. Not soon enough though. Those little bas-turds don't need to be able to return to the crime scene and boost.
