View Full Version : Seasoned vs. Trash
I have some very well used DX (standard Innova plastic) discs that I have a hard time throwing now and was wondering what other people may have done in the same sort of situation.
I just started throwing with "disc golf discs" in the Spring of 2007. I really just started to get the different flight characteristics of different discs this past Summer as my technique improved. I throw primarily RHBH.
I'm assuming a reasonably level release for these descriptions. I have a Leopard that used to fly straight as an arrow with a tiny bit of fade at the end and a Cheetah was nearly identical with just a little more fade. I have two Valkyries that were originally pretty straight that were longer and tailed more at the end. And my Wraith was the longest. It would almost always turn right for me a little with a controllable fade at the end.
The Leopard and Cheetah are still totally serviceable, but are way more understable than they used to be. The Vals and Wraith, though. turn over so much that any level release becomes a roller. And the crazy thing is that even with a big hyzer, the Vals and Wraith will still turn over and never come back. They fly like a Sidewinder on steroids now.
FYI... Just to give some insight into my throws. My distance increased over the last half of the Summer to where I clear 300' on about 1/3 of my drives. My go to drivers now are Champion Valkyries at 150. Plus I have a 170 Millenium JLS that I really like. With a level release the Valkyries turn a little bit and go long and straight with a little fade at the end. The JLS stays on whatever line I start it on. If I need a disc to turn right more I have a 150 Champion Sidewinder that works well. And for an overstable disc I have a 170 Champion Wraith that will take a nice anhyzer release and fade back left at the end.
Sorry for the length of this one. I'd really appreciate any suggestions on whether my old standby discs are done for or if anyone has suggestions for salvaging some use out of them.

I would begin by finding a store that buys used discs. If there is none then find some friends who are just starting out and hook them up (letting them know they owe you....wink!) since they will probably need something understable. Next I would quit buying dx unless its a roc and buy some better plastic. If your worried about them being too overstable then I would buy something less stable. Good luck and hey, you owe me...wink!

I did. And I love my Champion Vals. I do still like my Aviar P & As in DX better than Star. Unfortunately, the sporting goods stores... actually, one store... that's closest to me has no idea what disc golf is. Since I owe you, I'll give you a good deal on some "slightly worn" DX Vals or a Wraith.

My take on it given your experience and current distance is that it's you, not the discs. Discs do get more understable as they age, but I wouldn't expect them to act as understable as you're saying. What I would do is to take your beat discs and practice throwing them on pure hyzers, starting off short and seeing how far you can push them out without them flattening at all. There's a thread in here somewhere about "off-axis torque" that you might want to find and read. It's the sort of thing that will be easier to fix the earlier you recognize it.
I'd also recommend working with the Cheetah, your mids and putters a lot to improve your technique and distance. The Valk is OK, but not really optimal for how far you're throwing, especally in Champ plastic.
It won't be long before you value your beat discs more than your new ones.

Know what? I don't want to sound like a douche but I have a lot of trouble throwing distance with DX ANYTHING. I'm not sure why,but I seem to do better with Discraft "Z" plastic,or better yet Innova champion. DX just feels grippy and cheap. But I also know amigos who LOVE DX and won't use anything else. To each his own I suppose. :o

I'm one of those who liked DX plastic. But it really suffers with use and wears out to the point of uselessness. It also doesn't hold up well in colder weather, tends to warp easily after repeated tree strikes and gets nicked up more than others. As my game has improved, I use mainly champion and star plastic as they seem to be more dependable and less prone to damage. The release is more consistent too although this is also a function of practice.

I have a lot of old disc and old beat up disc. There is no where around here that wants them and no one I know wants a old beat up disc. The ones that are just to beat up to do anything with are trash the one that still fly I use as water disc, ones I don't really care if I loose. Then there are the ones that I take out of my bag and for some reason pick up later and they seem to fly different then I remember andfind out I use them more then my new ones.

FWIW, I have found that if throw an old beat up disc a little nose up it makes it more stable. Of course that's not a good habit LOL.

I found a really beat DX wraith a while back. I was only going to use it for junk shots, but after throwing it a bit I liked it better than my champ wraith. I also had a beat valk that I loved, but it has gone to disc heaven, so i replaced it with another DX valk that I trashed as quickly as I cold to get it beat in again.
So yea, I like dx plastic and I like it beat in.
