It's been brought up a bunch of times so I finally decided to try and make this happen. It might have helped had I been familiar with facebook since I had to learn what was what on the site and how things worked over there. At that point I spent a good week figuring out how to code something to get the two sites talking. But enough back story, on with the good stuff!

In your dashboards you'll notice a new "Connect to Facebook" button. Click that and follow the facebook prompts. You *should* get a permissions prompt immediately after connecting your account to DGCR, if you don't I think it should come up at some point (maybe a page reload) but you'll need to authorize the site to post on your wall, etc. Also, if you want the connection to remain active, you'll need to remain logged in to facebook (click the remember login thing) or you need to login to facebook in the same browser session prior to visiting DGCR.

Once you're connected, you should see a list of preferences there for what you want to share. The only "share" that is automated is adding a played course as it's just a button click on the site. For the rest of the items, you will see a checkbox at the bottom of the review/score/schedule forms with a checkbox to indicate whether you want to share this particular review/score on Facebook.

The dashboard preferences control these check boxes. So if you turn "New Reviews" on then the checkbox on the review form will always be checked by default. If you set it to off, then the checkbox will be off by default (you can always click it to on if you want to share reviews/scores on a case by case basis).

If your facebook account is not connected to DGCR or you're not currently logged in to facebook, you will not see any facebook options other than the connect button on the dashboard.

Wow.. that was wordy but hopefully somewhat clear as to what's what. As always, if you run into problems let me know. I'm guessing their may be a few as this facebook stuff is very new to me but I tested everything out and it seems to be working so fingers crossed :)

Cool, glad to hear it works for someone besides me :) I noticed some stuff seems to take a little longer on occasion if you're doing the facebook thing since it has to send a message off to facebook and do some login checks. I'm talking 1 or 2 seconds at the most so it wasn't too bad

Awesome Tim! I was able to connect OK but haven't tried any of the sharing features yet. Great job! Once again DGCR trumps all the other DG sites out there :)

Just recorded a fake score, worked great and the entry in the FB wall looks cool, I like how you pulled in a photo of the course & linked back to the course page.

Hopefully this will give some extra FB exposure to other DGers in FB who aren't aware of DGCR.

Very cool Tim. Now if I make a DGCR group in my Facebook and can convince my friends to make up and share a schedule it makes for a nice way to see who's playing when. Kind of what Google Latitude does, but for disc golf only.

Really cool! The only thing that I noticed that might be a problem is on the posting of a recorded round. If you go back and edit the round, then it does not update on Facebook. This may only really apply to when you make a change to the notes section or a change to the overall score.

timg
02-02-2010, 05:28 PM
Well, I can't remove or update a post on your page so I'd have to create another one if you change your score, etc. which I thought might get annoying.

I did include updated reviews and the same rules apply as on the site where if you update it in less than 24 hours then the review here isn't shown as updated and there isn't an "update" post to your facebook page. After 24 hours, your review will show the updated tag on DGCR and a post will be sent to facebook about your updated review.

is that just onthe social page, or is it every post we make here or what? Sorry I am facebook stupid. I'va had forever and only been in there a handful of times.

If you connect your DGCR account to facebook, you will be able to share the following items (and only these items) on facebook:

New review
Updated reviews
New scores in the scorebook
New scheduled rounds
New courses added to your played list

So when I add a round to my schedule though it posts to my Facebook right away. Which means it would get lost in all the feeds on my friends' pages by the time the actual day rolls around. So is there any way to delay the posting of the schedule until the day it happens?

timg
02-03-2010, 07:22 AM
I think there is a way but it's much more involved since I'll have to update your page without you being actively logged in to facebook. It's something I can investigate when I get a chance.

There isn't really a visible change on the site. What happens is that if you post a new review, score, etc. DGCR will make a post on your facebook wall that you wrote a new review or whatever the case may be.

Can I push out my old reviews? I was able to send the link to my home course.

I have a better idea. Why don't I just look for myself?

Nope. Can't do that.

I think you used the share thing for your home course which is completely separate from the facebook stuff I put together for reviews, scores, etc. As far as old reviews, there isn't a way to push them out. If you update them, they'll get pushed out so if/when you do that it will post a thing on your facebook page.

I love it. I didn't realize that I had checked the post updated reviews, So as I finally got around to posting the addresses for GPS's in my reviews, All of my facebook friends got blasted with the Review updates. Why would you post the addresses in your reviews instead of on the actual course page? Far more people would see it on the course page.

Finally linked up, and it looks great! Posted a scheduled round and a score, got some comments from FB friends who aren't DGCR members, so hopefully as I continue to litter my page with stuff this upcoming season I'll drive a few people to DGCR.

Tim, do you have a way to see how much traffic gets sent here via Facebook links? If so, we'd all love to see some numbers as more people start using this! If not, maybe you could include a little questionnaire for new members asking how they heard about DGCR (PDGA, Facebook, Google, flyer on a course, website address written in wet cement, etc.).

timg
03-06-2010, 08:10 PM
I can see some facebook numbers but it's all mixed in so I can differentiate whether someone clicked on a link from your wall or you just went to your dashboard and the facebook connect thing loaded.

Glad to hear a few of your friends commented on it :)

My only complaint is now that you have linked the IP (which I understand the reasoning) when I put in my wifes score on her account it posts it to my facebook under my name.

timg
03-07-2010, 12:09 PM
That's just a facebook connect thing I don't have control over. It uses the account of whoever is logged into facebook so if you want it to go under your wife's name you'd have to log out of facebook first, log her in to fb and then come here and enter a score (you might have to re-connect if you haven't to give the site permission to post to her fb).

It use to be more "school" oriented. It was designed originally for high school graduating seniors to keep in touch with one another as they went off to college. Now it's just pure social networking with no particular theme. :\

03-08-2010, 08:19 AM
Ummm I have found probably about 20 people I went to school with and was in the Navy with that I would have never found. In fact we went to dinner Saturday with a girl from school and her family. I think that is pretty cool.

You can also get groups of people with like minds on something.

Do you need to be logged in to FB before recording a score etc. for it to show up on FB? I recorded a score, but nothing shows on my FB page.

I also made sure I was logged in then edited the round (without making changes) and then saved it, no luck.

Was wondering if the "notes" section for the round would show up on the FB post as well.

timg
03-10-2010, 06:50 AM
I'll have to double-check the notes but I think that will show. You have to be logged in to FB (possibly having checked "remember login" over there). If you see the "Share on Facebook" checkbox on the score entry page (or any other page on DGCR that shares data with FB) at the bottom that means your account is linked properly. You can also go to your dashboard to see if it's connected.

That's really strange. I just went to the scorebook page and it popped right up for me. Which browser are you using?

gcoghill
03-10-2010, 02:45 PM
Safari on OS X 10.6.2. It worked fine when you first set it up, not sure what the deal is.

timg
03-10-2010, 02:58 PM
That's really odd since I haven't touched it since I set it up. If you have Firefox give it a shot there to see if it's something with Safari.

gcoghill
03-10-2010, 03:08 PM
Ok even more odd: Logged in to DGCR via Firefox, and I had to do the FB Connect thing again. Still no checkbox on scorebook edit page.

Tried on Google Chrome, and the FB Connect area on the Dashboard didn't even show up.

timg
03-10-2010, 03:12 PM
Only new scores are sent to facebook, not edited/updated ones so you won't see the checkbox on that page. I'm downloading chrome now to see what's up.

Forgot I had a Flash blocker plugin running on Chrome. Sorry!

So it seems you need to log in to FB Connect with every browser you want to use. I got the "Connect" button on Chrome after allowing Flash.

gcoghill
03-10-2010, 03:22 PM
Still odd that it didn't work last night, but I guess you need to be logged in to FB. Other linked apps have some setting to allow continuously, might want to look into that.

timg
03-10-2010, 04:22 PM
As long as you check the "remember me" button when you login to FB you will always be connected. From my somewhat limited understanding of it, I think the FB Connect stuff uses facebook's cookies to determine if you are logged in to FB or not which is why if you switch browsers you would need to re-login to both DGCR and FB. If you have already connected the accounts before in any browser you will not need to do it again in the new one.

Just about all my family is on facebook and it's a great way to keep in touch with them. I have been using it about 6 month's now and find it to be a useful way to keep in touch with people.

Fender088
03-11-2010, 08:40 AM
Teens use it for other purposes. A lot of people just use it to stay in touch with old friends. I really can't hate on it, because it's allowed me to communicate with friends that I would just be wondering about otherwise.
It's like any other website: you gotta take the good with the bad.

skinner21
03-11-2010, 03:27 PM
When I tested it out, I just put a score into the scorebook and it didn't show on facebook. What I had to do was go to my dashboard home on here (it will show "connected") then I was able to enter in a second round and it showed up on facebook.

timg
03-11-2010, 03:34 PM
Did you go to facebook between attempts? If so, that is probably what made it work. If you don't have remember login checked over on facebook then you'll have to visit there first before the connect thing knows that you're logged in over there.
