Tone poles
Homemade baskets
Marked targets
Chain-less catchers
....pile of stuff to throw at:\
Would you play a course (great layout and flow with true par 4's) that used these random targets... or would you travel 20 miles to play a short par 54"old style" course with 18 real baskets?

Sure, I would be happy if there were more courses of any kind by me. I would prefer to have baskets with chains, but if the baskets were different makes it wouldn't bother me at all, I think it would help acclimate players to the different baskets.

I don't have a real issue with non-basket targets, but it would be annoying if they changed throughout the course. Something like 9 of one target then 9 of another would be perfectly fine with me.

Variety is the spice of life. I'd definitely give the mixed target course a shot (pun intended). Could be a blast...

I'd rather not see a mixture of different kinds of targets on a course, but different brands or models are fine. In other words, it would irritate me to throw to some baskets with chains, and some without, but if you don't have the money to have a full set of 18 manufactured baskets, a few homemade ones would be fine. And I've never seen tone poles on a course, but I wouldn't mind them either. I'm just imagining that what the original poster has suggested would have a ratty, unmaintained feel. If it was a great layout, you could probably get some folks together to raise money to install higher quality targets, so if you think of it as a temporary measure until you can raise money, go for it. Just don't expect many good reviews for a course where some of the baskets are flimsy or missing chains.

It's not listed but at the private Country Course in NC, I seem to remember every target is different - a hanging basket, bathtub, wicker basket, spare tire, etc.

the CC has all traditional catching baskets(homemade to production baskets)...I'm thinking more about "unique" objects (tone poles to less- traditional catchers)....similar to the birth of our sport back in the 70's around the "campus"....hit the garbage can, for example...smack the statue

I played it in the mid-90s so it must have been upgraded since then.

I truly understand what you are saying, but this is more or less a "gorilla" style course....no $ involved, that is the point ...it really doesn't need mach 5's or chainstars, they would take away for the courses character
reviews are great for conveying.....well, basically criticism towards a course...everyone can see things they would want improved/changed
all be it a course is course(one more place to practice and have fun playing this great game

I'd play it. What do you have to lose.

I'd play it just to see it, but doesn't sound like it'd be all that great. A course is a course though.

I would give "non-traditional" type courses a shot. I really haven't played anything close to one yet. I know there is one about 1.5 hours from where I live so I will make the trip someday.

I wouldn't go out of my way to play it, but I would give it a shot. If I liked the layout, I would try to go about getting baskets installed through the City, County, etc. I like to hear chains!

The roots of the game were the ability of each player to take turns choosing the next target. So after we just hit the garbage can..I can say from behind this tree over the drainage ditch and hit the fire hydrant in the field. To go to a course that already has objects chosen as the course is a letdown. If there are no baskets I would rather play safari and choose our own targets...It's so much more fun. I won't play pre determined object courses. I'd rather have baskets or the freedom to make up my own course as we play. Thats how I remember the roots of the sport. Before there were courses everywhere!

Ehh, I'd stick with the less challenging basket course because baskets make a course look established. You can build a course on the fly with non-traditional targets on pretty much any piece of land with enough size.

This thread brings an interesting thought to me. What's more/most important on a course for you? Fairway shape, design, etc., or basket type and placement, along with tee design and placement. I know they're all fairly related, but all are elements of what makes up the course.

i really think that alot of people really want accual targets... now ive played tourniments with different targets.. but they were still baskets... just some were plastic with odd noodle like chains(didnt catch very well) the beauty about the baskets is there is no question as to if it hit or not.. either its in or its not

I would rather play a great tone or object course than a crappy basket one, but given equal design and amenities, I definitely prefer baskets to other targets.

I was browsing around looking at courses and came across WJ Homestead (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3532&mode=ci). When I saw the photos for this course it immediately made me think of this thread.
I can't imagine that #11 has ever been aced. You could sit there all day and try for a Cubby ace and I seriously doubt you would ever get it. Tomahawk or thumber would be the only realistic option.
#18 just made me laugh. I can only hope that it's no longer used for its original intended purpose. ;)

I will play any course once. I prefer matching targets (aesthetic aspect), but 18 different unique targets could be a novelty. Bad or unmatching targets would not keep me away from a good course.

Im from Humboldt, we'll play on anything we can throw a disc at. My home course is a mix of baskets and tone poles.

If playing solo I'd prefer the baskets but if with friends I'd prefer the better design

I would play both. If a course is laid out well and easy to navigate, I would play it. The target is important but it wouldn't keep me from playing it.
