2010 DGCR Mid Atlantic Meet
Hawk Hollow (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3252) – Spotsylvania, VA
October 1st, 2nd, 3rd
All DGCR members are invited to the 2010 DGCR Mid Atlantic Meet being held at Hawk Hollow (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3252), a private course maintained by our very own John Biscoe. This 27 hole course plays over 90 acres of scenic Virginia country farm land filled with elevation changes and water hazards and is regarded as one of the best courses in the country. Come see why DGCR members have said:
“Hawk Hollow is an excellent example of course design. "Risk versus Reward" is a necessary requirement of a great course and it's very apparent that a lot of thought went into every hole. “ – Zenbot
-----
“Hawk Hollow is my favorite course out of the 350 or so courses I have played thus far; the design is fantastic, the scenery beautiful, and the aura is friendly and relaxing.” – cefire
-----
“Get used to saying wow, you'll say it again [and again].” – tmahan

I'm in. My Va friends are the ones who got me into this game. I make at least one trip down each year and I'm visiting them next month so chances I won't make it are extremely small. I'll be able to drag one of them to the event. Not sure if we'd want to camp or just stay at his place in Manassas. I'd love to see some sort of fund raising for the site/Tim even if it's $1 for each participant and we send him a small check.
I'm in for shirts or whatever. Keep the ideas flowing. I might be willing to front some cash for a DGCR custom stamp order.

What kind of items are you looking for to use as prizes. Do they have to be stricly DG related. I often get great deals on tools and stuff where I work. Would something like that be okay.

While we are having competitive events, the main theme of this meet is to socialize with fellow DGCR members while playing disc golf. It really isn't intended to see who could win a "grand prize."
I'm hoping TimG *cough* and maybe a few DG stores would donate a t-shirt or something small to give away as prizes, to those who win the doubles and one-disc competitions. I guess they don't have to be DG related. But we're trying to keep away from any extra expenses as possible. So purchasing tools for prizes isn't really on target.
For example:
I had the idea of everybody donating a used disc to put in a basket. We'll hand out raffle tickets to everybody and we'll draw one out at a time. When your number is called, it's your turn take one disc of your choice from the basket. You could take your own back or you could take one somebody else put in. So maybe if there's a DG Retailer out there that wants to donate a disc with their stores stamp/ink on it, we can add it to the basket. And the store would get some easy and direct advertising out of it.
gottafixit
03-03-2010, 01:04 PM
I think the disc idea is great, because I'm sure most people will have at least one disc they could manage to get rid of if they know they are getting one in return. I think the DGCR fund would be good thing to. So i see one disc and doubles what else is on the event list?

I wish we could band together to build a nice 9 hole course during the weekend like a Peace/Americorps sort of project. You know, some way to give back and spread the good word of disc golf. I know that's impossible but maybe we can try to schedule a group cleanup on a course that needs it. Didn't Loriella loose its biggest advocate a year or so ago? Maybe a course like that could use some help or another course could use an improvement.
It would be nice to see the DGCR weekend leave an impact on a local course.

Are you implying HH is not flawless? ;)
Whatever. John's hosting us so that would be the least we could do. It would be great if we could build some tee pads but I don't imagine he's looking for that.
I prefer the idea of fixing up a public course that the general public would actually see though.
That's just my opinion. I would love it if other people were into volunteering someplace though.
jrawk
03-03-2010, 08:21 PM
As far as HH, the goal is to leave the course sunday with it in better shape than when we got there. So late in the day Sunday we'll get volunteers to walk the course with trash bags and divot repair tools. ;)
And I think you have a solid idea. Maybe we can do it at a different course on a completely unrelated date. Bryan Lake in Richmond or Burke Lake in Fairfax would be great candidates. Tons of exposure. I'd be willing to help plan and coordinate this with you if you are willing. Shoot me a PM.

I think its a good idea but it would depending on what we are considering, if we are just talking walking a course and picking up trash and stuff thats easy and would be a great thing to do before playing a round or during, before playing the hole everyone walks it picks up then you play the hole. If your talking making a constructial improvement that would take some working with either a local group or the parks dept. I'm for the cleaning slash playing idea.
justin
03-04-2010, 09:18 AM
Oh I want to do it all ;) I think with 10 or 20 people you could clear out a fairway and essentially build a single hole in less than a day.
I've ben thinking about it and I think it might be best to just get an idea of how things are going during the weekend and discuss something like this for 2011 if it still seems appropriate.
But yes, if we go play another (public) course I think we should make a point as a group to not leave a piece of trash behind. I'll bring trash bags :D

03-04-2010, 02:03 PM
Bryan Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=776&mode=ci) still has natural tees and no tee signs. You'd think a group of 10+ volunteers would make short work at installing the Tee signs at least. And depending on the material (crushed stone or rubber mats), new tee boxes wouldn't be hard either. Those improvements would significantly boost DGCR review points.
justin
03-04-2010, 04:06 PM
Boosting review points? I love the way you said that.
That's along the lines of what I was thinking. If there was grunt work to do like installing materials already purchased I think we could make a real impact. If this could become a standard of DGCR Meets then maybe we could talk courses into volunteerism like this on an annual/semi-annual basis in exchange for putting a DGCR sign at the kiosk or something.
Plus, I haven't played any Richmond courses so if it adds a course to my list I'll do whatever's needed :D
jrawk
03-04-2010, 04:13 PM
Standard DGCR meets is a little rash... it'll certainly be a variety of one. ;)
But lets face it, this site revolves around reviews. If a majority of reviewers notice a specific flaw at a certain course, why not get a team together and explore fixing it?
What's the worse that can happen, the park and rec says "no thanks".

Although a fantastic Idea, Bryan park(the city) I don't think wants better tee pads, or at least doesn't want to pay for them.
As for posting a DGCR sign at the course, if your local course has a kiosk and doesn't all ready have one then shame on you. I designed my kiosk around the DGCR sign(not really but it sounds good and the sign is a major focus). Take a staple gun out there and do what is needed.

The course is the best in Virginia and is private. You will not find it on the map here on this website because you have to have permission from the owner to play there. Who is a great guy and a very active person on this website. He goes by biscoe.
His love of discgolf and the people here has prompted him to offer us the chance to meet and play there.
The course is near The Grange (which has 3 great courses) is all I can tell you, and that is in Spotsylvania county. The approximate distance is about 70 miles from Middletown.

If you mean the Middletown, VA east of the Chesapeake, it is quite a long and expensive trip. Google maps says 4 hours via the tunnel under the water.

"Post count doesn't matter"
That's funny considering all of the add-nothing comments out there from people who have been on here for a few months with post counts over 1,000.
You know, comments that don't help with the discussion at hand and are just an excuse for someone to....talk... Hmm, I'll shut-up now.

I forgot. The reason I brought this up is because I need a rough count of how many t-shirts we may need. So please chime and let me know.
Just a heads up for everyone.
I talked with jrawk and I have contacted a friend that owns a company, Peace Frogs (http://peacefrogs.com/) , that can professionally design and print the shirts. He has agreed to do them at a discount. I will be meeting with him on the design next week. Once we finish the design I will submit it to jrawk, jkdisc, prerube, vegan ray, and biscoe.
If I have their approval then to everyone else.

As long as you've marked the poll, you will get an RSVP invitation via Private Message (PM) when we start sending them out. We have not started sending them out. You will have to reply to the PM, answering some general questions, and then also provide the donation (to be determined). When we receive the donation, you will be sent the directions to the course.
The donation will kept as low as possible. And it will be per day. So if you want to come only one day, you are only donating for one day. All donations will be used for the events expenses (job-johnny, food, etc.).
The more people that RSVP back intending to come, the lower the donation will be. I don't expect it to be over $20 total for a 3 day stay. Probably half of that for one day.

Great job to everyone that is organizing this. Can we switch our vote? I'm currently at 50% and would like to bump it to 75%.
I might also be looking for a carpool coming from a little north of Philly.
The events schedule looks great. I'd likely use the free time to hit up darkside/sunnyside. I know the events schedule is tentative, but I'm not sure how I feel about tombstone tourney (I have never done one, but understand how they work). If we have a big group, it seems as if there is wasted time since we all have to tee off in same spot, and only 4 start at a time. It might also make a long walk for people that finish early.
jkdisc
07-29-2010, 11:04 AM
as far as the tombstone round, right now there are only 11 definetes, the number will go up but right now the time doesnt look like an issue.
Kwick
07-29-2010, 11:44 AM
say we have 30. we could have 6 groups of 4, and 2 groups of 3.
I think it would waste time in this example to have a group waiting for about a half hour before they tee off. It will also create a log jam if the event any group is slow/lost discs, when most of the course will be open.
Obviously 11 wouldn't be a problem, but at some number of players i think it would make sense to do a normal round. Just my 2 cents. can't wait for this event and to play Hawk Hallow.
jrawk
07-29-2010, 03:09 PM
Keep in mind how early the tombstone round starts. The first people to tee off will be those camping on-site the night before. Then as people arrive later, they can tee off. It takes 2.5 hours for a group of 4 to play 18. The tombstone round will take less time for the group of 4 to complete since everyone is limited to the number of throws. And if there is enough time after you 'die', just keep playing.
We can't stress it enough. This is a social event. Cmon out and play. If you want to play a normal round of golf during the tombstone rounds, go for it!
jrawk
07-29-2010, 03:13 PM
Also there will be two divisions (you choose which one you want to play in division).
Two groups will be teeing off at the same time on different holes.
Advanced get 58 strokes and will start on hole 1 (just an example).
Ameture get 70 Strokes and will start on hole 10.
jrawk
07-29-2010, 03:18 PM
And lastly, there will be no wasted time.
Things to do while you wait to tee off:
Take some throws on the Ace Run hole while you wait (extra donation required).
Play some tailgate games i.e. cornhole, washer toss, ladder ball, etc
BS with other DGCR members.
Help Ray prepare lunch.
Help Biscoe churn butter. :p
jrawk
07-29-2010, 03:30 PM
While i brought up the Ace Run hole, here's what I had in mind.
We mark a tee off area to one of the baskets near by.
For $5.00 extra you get 10 throws, using your own discs.
If you make the Ace, you get 75% of the total end-of-day pot earned.
25% automatically goes to Hawk Hollow as a donation to the course itself.
If more than one person Aces during the day, all split the 75% evenly.
Play as many times as you'd like. Every 10 throws is another $5.00.
So if 30 people play the ace run, the pot is $112 and Biscoe gets a $38 donation.
If nobody gets an ace, Biscoe gets it all as a donation to Hawk Hollow for course upkeep/improvements.

Nope, not a 1000 rated. I think i've only recorded one 1000+ rated round all year. I'm the guy who shoots the hottest round in a tournament and because my rating is low it's rated below 1000 and all of the other pros complain that I lower their rating. Call me the spoiler.
I'll eat Ray's BBQ but you guys can fight over his jockstrap.
I'd watch out for Biscoe at his course. He beat me by a stroke when I played there a few weeks ago.

Would you need any additional baskets for extra activities like the ace hole? I have an M-14 that is a piece of cake to toss in the truck and bring along. Just drop me a PM.
With the excitement building, I may have to take a slick day from school on Friday. If so, I'd gladly help with set up, etc.

Invitations will most likely start going out the end of August or beginning of September. We want to get a good feel for food prices and a rough head count.
If you plan on staying overnight at Hawk Hollow, consider it primitive camping with no electricity or water. There is local camping at Lake Anna otherwise. I am not aware of amenities there, but click here for the website (http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/lak.shtml).
What questions do you have for camping? we can start addressing them now.
Some things to bring if you can:
- Extra coolers
- Portable tables
- Portable chairs
- Portable canopies
- Tailgate games (beanbag toss, washer toss, ladder ball, etc)
This stuff will be listed for response on the RSVP if you can bring any.

Different places to camp?
Hawk hallow
Lake Anna
The Grange
Maybe a general time it takes to get to HH from them
That link is good and I'll need to research that when I get some more time. I, like most I assume, will be looking to camp and will base it on :
Price
Ammenities (water, showers, electric)
Set up tent or have cabin
Location (distance to HH, grange, loriealla (sp), etc)
Maybe there is a cheap hotel/motel close by that people could split for two nights. I'd probably prefer to split a hotel for friday and saturday night if the room would be $100 or less a night.
Maybe also knowing where to pick up ice, food, gas (i have no idea what spotslyvania consists of).
Perhaps a list of course rules. no alcohol or drugs for example. if allowed, where do you get them or bring your own (alcohol that is).
2 more months, make sure to put those PTO requests in with work and the GF's/Wife

Upon approval by the organizing committee here are the t-shirt design and prices...
The minimum order for shirts is 48 and they will be $10.00 a piece. If we hit 100 they go down and if we hit 144 it is only $6.00 per shirt.
When sending invitations can we include how many and what sizes as part of the invitation? Also, it may be a good idea to plan for those who do not order ahead, do not have the money yet, and those who show at the last minute.
The second one is from Peace Frogs, the company that is doing the shirt. He is keeping the price down by putting this on the front. These are the first shirts made with this design. You will be seeing it in the future, a lot, if all goes well. More on that later.
This one will be on the back.

As stated in early posts (i know 160 is a lot to page back into), both Lake Anna and the Grange are less than 10 minutes driving time using the speed limit. We have been telling everybody that mapping directions to Lake Anne will be a great way to estimate distances. We wouldn't tell people to do that if it was not very close. Heh. I can't get any more explicit than that.

Please go back and re-read the original post in this thread. It should get you pointed in the right directions. Spotsylvania near I-95 is a shoppers oasis.
Hawk Hollow is roughly 30 minutes from those attractions, however there is a local grocery store.
We are not organizing lodging for anybody. If you know of others coming you can make plans with them.

The brown shading can go bye-bye I was not real up on it. The reason I did not go with the big bird was because either the banner cut up the wings making it look, well, cut up or the wings covered over the banner making it hard to read banner.
As for the other one I wanted an unbiased opinion so I let it out there as I did. I do not like the term FROLF but it was a decent play on words with frog and golf. As for the Ching it does not sound right.

Having two sides is sweet, but I'd rather have a side blank than have "peace frolf" or "PF CHING" on it.
Maybe have the hawk from post 174 (but remove "mid atlantic meet up) on the front. Either big across the chest or as a small picture on the left chest side.
than on the back have a big picture of the Hawk on a basket (post 169),or the black hawk catching a disc (post 169) with the "DG.. meet up... etc" with it.
That'd be a sweet shirt that i'd be proud to wear and would get a bunch of use out of.

I think we're going with the hawk head logo. As much as I'd like to do double sided, it'll be a bit more for that. Maybe next year. :)
Also, invitations will go out this weekend. So keep your eyes on your PM boxes.

We do not discriminate, but if you are camping, the wife and chillins' may get bored while you are playing hours of disc golf. Most PDGA courtesy rules apply, except I think you will be able to drink while you play as long as you don't litter.
The atmosphere should be kept suitable for children, I do not know if anyone plans on bringing any illegal substances, but personally I would say it would be pretty rude for anyone to assume our host would risk having illegal substances on his land.

Finished at 74 with a circle 6 on 15 and circle 7 on 18. The wind was playing tricks with me. Could have been 68 if i were more attuned to mother nature.
Is it ever not windy on that end of the course?

Cyclops, I'm PM'ing you the invitation now. Lodging/camping (even if at Hawk Hollow) is entirely your decision and own responsibility. If you haven't, shoot Kwick a PM about the carpool.
Yep, been talking with him about the details. The car pooling is no problem. As soon as the details are clear I'll reply to your invitation. Thanks

As long as cyclops isn't referring to one-eyed willy i'm sure there's a spot in my car.

I want to thank everybody that has responded to the invitations so far and everybody's willingness to lend a hand (and donate some prizes). Truly outstanding!
As time draws nearer, we'll start to sort out who can bring what and shoot ya'll a message with what to bring.
Also invitation reminders will go out sometime this weekend to those that haven't responded yet.

Yeah I know MD is south of the mason dixon, but I consider the MD/VA line to be the real line. As soon as I cross the line into VA its like another world and people can't drive!
I have lived in multiply states, and the only thing worse than certain ethnic drivers in CA, are MD drivers. You guys, you know who you are, are not a NASCAR driver, and are also Not an Ice Road Trucker. But you DO suck on the road!

Maryland drivers have maryland education that means that drivers close to DC really do not know that 70 is more than 55. PG County people always speed, run red lights, and never follow basic right of ways. This doesn't make sense because PG has the most red light and speed cameras.
(PG = Prince George's....or Pretty Ghetto. It is bassically DC, Do not park your car anywhere in the county)

It's just as bad inside the beltway. everybody feels the need to ride the bumper in front of them. If there is no bumper in front of them, it's petal to the metal until there is one.
And 20 feet of separation is an invitation to get cut off.

To any Pittsburgh folk - I'm driving to this and I don't think my wife will be coming. If you need a ride, shoot me a PM and maybe we can figure something out.
