Okay, here is the latest updates on Courses in the Myrtle Beach area
We are now up to 3 courses
East Bay (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3360&mode=ci) In Georgetown, SC
Tupelo Bay (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1933) in Garden City
Loris Nature Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3763) in Loris
Here are the Future plans
Loris is going to be the first in being upgraded to an 18 hole course
Then Horry County is going to install 3 more 18 hole courses in the Myrtle Beach area. One in the North, One in the South end, and one between Myrtle Beach and Conway (Carolina Forrest)
Now, to the Georgetown County side of things
They are going to be installing 4 new parks, each one containing a DG course. I'm still waiting for more Details on the Georgetown courses. They've had a change in management, but from what I've been told, the course are still on!
Then you've got the presumed course planned at Grand Park. To which getting information is like pulling teeth!
So to summarize, That is 11, that's right ELEVEN, courses planned for the Myrtle Beach area! As I find out more, I'll let you know!

Why can't they have these when I was down there for the Flogging Molly concert last Saturday?

Poor Russ is like the war or weather correspondent in a bad place. He keeps hanging in there waiting for the good news. It looks like his patience is finally paying off. Before we know it, Myrtle Beach will be the DG capital of the South. Congrats on the progrss Russ.

I know, Right! I was shocked! It's been like pulling teeth to get any information about anything! I went to play Loris last week, and I noticed a course on my way back into town. Maybe it was my spideysense, but I passed a park that is almost finished. It had similar markings to the Loris Park. And I wondered "I bet they are going to put a course in here!" Sure enough, that is the North Park course that is planned!

I couldn't agree more!

You know what... I miss counted. I forgot, East Bay Park will more than likely become extinct when the next one in Pawleys Island gets installed. So we will have 10 courses. My bad:o I got over excited!

Why the big push all of a sudden? Is there a group lobbying the Parks Department.

You know, I'm not sure. It is strange enough to actually make one wonder. When I first started to email the city leaders. They told me that "Someone has already been bringing it up to them" I was stunned! Now, a year later all of this comes out! It's been difficult to get anyone to respond. But I finally got a response someone. That's where I got the info I posted. I've asked them about the Grand Park course. That is the one, people know about, but can't seem to find any details about.

very cool! Congrats!!! Always great to hear about these success stories. Here in the bay area, we hope to have two more courses 20 minutes from golden gate park (SF) in the next year or so. Should set us up for an A tier...

chalk up another course to that list! There is plans to put one in Myrtle Beach, just off of Kings Hwy, (Business 17) around 3rd ave south. I'm waiting to hear back from the City for more details, but it looks like it is in the Final plan.

The other 3 are being installed by Horry County, this and the "Grand Park" course, are city projects.
Now we are at 9 proposed courses.

I got an email back from City of Myrtle Beach, and was informed that there would be some budget "belt tightening" going on. So some projects may be put on hold for awhile. Now, that's just Myrtle Beach. Not Horry County or Georgetown County. I'm still waiting on updates, in fact, I may just have to shoot an email tonight.

Russ, I really appreciate all the info you've posted in here. My future in-laws just bought a condo in N. Myrtle Beach and I was searching for courses when I found this thread. Can't wait to see what these courses have in store.

I joined that group a couple weeks ago, I actually found it through Facebook before I found it here. We'll be down there in NMB this weekend, what's the top course I need to play (since I will probably only have time to hit one)?

Dude, I'm sorry I missed this one! Well, for future reference, I'd say you'd be close to Loris, but Tupelo will be lighted for night play. I hope you got a chance to play here, sorry I didn't catch this in time.
I thought I was subscribed to this thread. :o

Wow, I guess that's two strikes against me! :) I've already sent you a messaage, but I'm just going to repost it here, since it's the latest bit of info. There is a big playground project going on. ...in fact, it's huge. Once they get that constructed, which will be sometime this month, they will pick up the Disc Golf Agenda again. One of the next two courses will be in North Myrtle Beach. In fact, you pass it on the way to Loris. When you come off/or go pass Hwy 31 on Hwy 9, you'll see Bell & Bell Car dealership, and a CVS. On the CVS side, and across and down the street there is a new recreation center. It's will be there. The other will be more centrally located near Surfside, but further inland.

Fixed! :D
That's not a half bad idea. Tee off from the top of the roller coaster.
You know, that park wasn't half bad. I think they should have made it bigger, have made one big ride and put more stuff in. During 08, the radio station I work for gave us season passes out there for remotes. We were usually bored after the first of two hours.

OK, this is SWEET. We stay in North Myrtle (between 14th and 15th at Sea Castles) every year -- probably be there mid to late July this year, though I'm kinda hoping for June next year. Didn't get to play at all this year (got bronchitis on Wednesday, so I wasn't feeling like doing much of anything at that point), but we usually play two rounds of ball golf and a couple rounds of mini golf with the kids, so a round or two of disc golf should round things out nicely. Even if the new course isn't in by then, I plan on playing Tupelo and Loris both this next trip down.

Well, if everything goes according to what I've been told, we might have more than a couple new courses. ...hopefully! There are some in Georgetown county that are in the works as well. (The county to the south of myrtle beach) Possibly, one or more additional courses! That is, like I said

Just out of curiosity -- has anyone talked to the powers that be at Coastal Carolina University? There's some property over by the school that looks like (at least from Google Earth) it could house a decent course. At least four other Big South schools have disc golf facilities (Winthrop's is famous, Liberty has a nice new one, UNC-Ashville has a little 6-holer and Gardner-Webb has a nine-hole course).

Yes, in fact one of the next 3 courses in Horry county, will be near CCU in the Carolina Forest area. I haven't heard where, but they are talking about wanting to make it accessible for students. That's the only one, I don't have a specific on. As soon as I know something, I'll post it.
The problem with property here, is that if someone thinks it could make them a buck or two, they will hold on it. Of course this is a town that is just now realizing that people enjoy having recreational stuff to do. Don't try to figure out the logic, this is a town that has 2-4 beachware stores in every block.
Do me a favor, can you send me the address or coordinates of where you are looking? I'm curious.

Taking another look, it looks like it might be behind a cemetary -- it's across 544 from Coastal's football stadium. That'll teach me to zoom in before I assume stuff ;) 33°47'37.25"N 79° 1'37.81"W
There's some dirt roads it looks like going back in there, but I can't tell from the Google Earth imagery what's down there.

Well, I know that map is a couple of years old. It could be owned by developers, or it could be free open space. I'm going to send an email off to the P&R guy for Horry County, and see if they have a place designated for the Carolina Forest/CCU area. I know that is near an area that is owned by a lot of developers, but I'm not exactly sure what is there now. I think that this map is from 07, so there could be new stuff there already. ...or not. You never know with this area.

DAMMIT!! I had a whole paragraph typed out, and I accidentally hit a link and lost it!:wall:
I know that pic was taken in roughly 07. So there could be new developments already built out there. I'll check with the Horry County P&R guy, and see if he'll throw me any leads. I know it's near that area. Actually, It was supposed to be off 501. Just a skosh further North. I think that area might be owned by a developer. ...maybe. I will keep you posted though, that area is actually close to one possible site a little bit further south. Near Socastee. They've only given me tidbits to go on. I guess they don't want me to get ahead of them. ;)

Cool. I'd love to see more colleges put in high-quality courses and get some intercollegiate competition going.
Looks like we'll be there both June AND July this year -- my daughter has a dance competition there sometime in June, so we'll be there for it and then our regular vacation. I'm looking forward to throwing some disc while we're there!

As would I. I think that they have seen enough of a response, thanks to DGCR ;),that they realize that there is some credibility to this sport. God knows I've been dropping this site every chance I get. Course references, Played/favorited/wishlisted, photos, etc that they see the potential. Couple that, with the fact that Myrtle Beach has taken an interest in catering to second tier sports. i.e. Disc Golf.
If everything is done right, and the right people handle everything, we could become one hell of a disc golfing town. The backing is there, the interest is growing, and Parks & Recs Dept's are on board. So, hopefully, everything turns out nicely. I think Loris was a good place to start, they could see the feedback on what not to do for the next rounds. (Fairway next to playground)

Well, It's been a while since I posted on here, but I finally have some info to post. Regarding our next course: Baskets have been ordered and we are planning a meeting to put together a layout.
Also...
You may remember me mentioning this. Someone had been doing a lot of work, trying to promote Disc Golf to the Myrtle Beach area. Everyone I contacted would mention that "Someone" had already brought up Disc Golf, and they had done a good job convincing "The powers that be". Well, this person finally contacted me just before Christmas. :)

That is the plan. except we don't want just one nice one! Now that they have people to consult with, we are trying to steer them in the right direction. The current courses were built without any Disc Golf guidance. ...at least none that I know of. I'm still trying to get connected with the City of Myrtle Beach. So far, they are a tough nut to crack.

Yay. Every year I go to myrtle beach. Last year I payed 14 dollars for two rounds of a nine hole course (Tupelo). That was way to pricey now I'm gonna have options :D
RussMB
02-20-2011, 04:26 PM
I agree, one thing that I'm kinda hoping for is that this will cause Tupelo to drop their prices. It's not the greatest course out there, but it is pretty cool to play at night under the lights. It's just to dang pricey!

Amen my brother! Let me get back to you on that, I'll see what he will give me. As far as approval goes, the Horry county council is completely 100% behind this. They loved the idea! Now that's the county. The City of Myrtle Beach is the tricky one. So far, I can't seem to get into the right place. I actually need to get back on the ball with that. Cause they said a course would be going in during phase three of our Grand Park development. Well... the went ahead and started Phase Three at the same time as phase II. But can I find anything out about a disc golf course? Hell no! lol All I know is that it will be. What, How big, etc I've got nada! Myrtle Beach is where I could definitely use a push. Let me get back to you. :hfive:
