I did this design for my good friend Splash Gordon.
Hes got a hole load of land, dock poles and holes in his pocket :p

I have played on courses before with target holes like this. But never came across any info on them. So i have made my own 'open source' design for all. Crusin' the local home depot (think lowride kids car cart) tells me that all these materials are readily avaliable in one form or another.

Splash! Design considerations.

Cheap, Readily avaliable materials, Easy to make, Quick to do.
Main pole once installed can be converted to full basket with little effort.
All dimensions are in Inches, and to the engineers out there, i know i know!

No DIY knowlege needed, measure twice cut once as my old man would say. Or measure once and knock off early to play DG!:D

Legends of DGCR, Enjoy, comments feed back very welcome, i will update plans as nesesary.

Jungle!

what did you use to draw that? solid works?

Forgot to mention!

The way this thing works is when the disc hits the larger tube, as thats the only part that counts, there will be a 'dong/ding' to let you know you got it 'in the hole'.

The size of the tube is the 'hot zone' of a normal basket. So it shouldn't mess up your game or wallet.

yep, SW 2009, tried to post the file, but DGCR said no. Can send it via email to anyone interested.

Tim, you are legendary. This design is even simpler and cheaper than I envisioned when you tried to describe it last week. Thanks Jungle, now I need to get to work on designing the rest of the course. Hopefully I'll visit the cabin in the next few months while snow is still on the ground. Its so much easier to mark out holes, and see the course flow, when all those annoying ferns and underbrush isnt there. Castigador Norte will be a reality.

I could even spraypaint some kind of Jungle and Splash logo on them with a stencil. Any ideas for a cool logo, maybe "J&S", in a cool font.

With baskets this cheap and simple, I think I'll have to at least do 18 holes, since space isnt really an issue, and with these, cost really wont be either. Sweeet!

It will be easier and better to drill the large diameter (0.5in) holes in the poles and outer tube if a small pilot hole is drilled at the intended hole centre first.
Pilot hole should be around 1/8th diameter to make it easy to cut both holes.

Centre punching the holesbefore drilling will prevent the drill (assuming your drilling by hand) from skidding around on the cylindrical surface.

To centre punch place the 0.5in drill bit on the intend hole centre and tap it with the hammer to leave an indentation on the pole.
you could alternatly use a square pole!

Jungle.

What is the estimated cost for this?

Hi, I'm new and have been looking around as well. This design looks very interesting. I also came across another designer that sells plans for $10 as a point of comparison if anyone is interested. Would be interested in knowing if anyone has purchased these plans or tried something similar. I did read originally about this design in a blog found (link to page 2 of the blog with ref: http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/10/18/0318232.php). The blogger initially mentioned purchasing the original built plans from the site owner with some items he would change that he didn't like (refer to first page of the linked blog). This version seems a bit better, but is likely subject to some of the same flaws.

Just curious if anyone has done anything like this or used this design. The one posted in this forum certainly looks simpler to build and probably easier to maintain... Thanks by the way Jungle Tim for posting this. I was surprised at the limited resources as well, but I'm only just starting to learn about disc golf.

gpfried,

you might want to read this thread: Basket building options (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1086), for some additional designs, plans and ideas.

Thanks DWill, looks good too. I'll have to say for simplicity, cost, and other factors, I'm now leaning back toward the original in this post.

Dammit, i cut it twice and it's still too short!:p

How well does PVC ring? I'd have expected you'd need a metal pole to get a good tone, like a one of those long pole baffles people use to keep squirrels out of their birdfeeders.

Thats kindof what I was thinking as well. Also, it would be a good idea to mount the pole on a portable stand, such as a plywood X like many homemade baskets use. It would be made portable by threads in the middle to screw the pole into, like the thing people use to put metal clothes hangers into the ground.

I've been thinking about it alot tim, and Im questioning whether PVC or metal is the way to go for the outside. Perhaps, to make PVC installation easier, just cut the PVC to the right Length, and then Put a cap on both ends. Try to find a top cap that curves outward vs. a flat one. Drill a hole in the bottom cap thats a bit larger than the diameter of the pole. Then just slid over the top of the pole. Might be easier than all that drilling through the pole and the PVC.

This way, the target would break down to three pieces in seconds, and be assembled almost as quickly. My one concern is if it would make noise.

...like a one of those long pole baffles people use to keep squirrels out of their birdfeeders.

How durable are those? Would it hold up to discs hitting it at high speed (especially an ace run or a long 2)?

I am trying to convince the designer of a new local course where extra collars were installed to install tone poles in lieu of the shorty 3 foot tall poles he is considering at the unused collar locations (he was thinking that the shorty 3 foot poles would be a visual point of reference for the city park workers can see the unused collar locations and not damage them with the mower blades).

With a minimal outlay of cash he can make this course enjoyable for all skill levels. He can also weld a tab on the pole (at ground level) so these tone poles can be locked down.

Why were there no responses on the tone pole regarding loudness? I am in the process of building 5 for a course around my parents' house.
