View Full Version : where do you miss your putts?

I have been frustrated lately due to hitting the front of the basket *way* too often. Where do you miss putts when on the course?

That said I didn't really have any data to prove to myself that this was happening more than the rest of my missed putts... perhaps it was simply the most frustrating and memorable. I put together (and attached) this "putting diagram" that I'm going to print a set of for each round. Has anyone else used something like this to good effect when practicing or playing?

missing short or long is much more readily correctable than missing left or right- it's really just a speed problem rather than being offline somehow. i don't get mad at myself for missing short unless i'm doing it repeatedly- missing to the right is what really ticks me off.

Interesting diagram..I've never bothered to track my misses *that* closely, but most of mine are in 1 of 3 places: dead center on the basket (most often), high and on the right side of the chain assembly top, or whiffing past the chains on the left side.

I play a putting game called Pozzy Putting (http://www.discgolfreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2730). Throughout a round I'll putt 50 times at the very least, and since I started playing regularly again I've found that I can usually tell if the putt is going in and, if not, where it's gonna miss as soon as it leaves my hands.

When I miss it's usually short. I usually blame this on using a girl's putter.

i always miss left, especially on jump putts, I always pick a link about 2-3 chains right of the pole at about mid way up

it weird because if compensate right, i miss right?!?!?!

I tend to miss short, but that's the way I prefer it. Erring low or short leaves you with a shorter follow-up putt than missing high or long, which makes it feel like a safer putt. So I like to let my putts die in the basket. I usually miss really long putts to the right because tend to I overestimate the fade on my putter. Again, I'd rather miss right (RHBH putting) because that tends to leave a shorter follow-up putt.

It's just a matter of "playing it safe."

On my misses, most come up short or hit the front of the basket. The diagram is a pretty cool idea. I have never thought about it that close until this topic.

0'-15' range - I don't miss.

15'-30' range - If I miss it's usually low, especially uphill or with a tail wind.

Outside of 25' - If I miss it's probably 2:1 to the left due to fade.

If my putter had absolutely no fade whatsoever, I would hit 75% more putts. Most of the ones I miss are to the left due to the fade. Good poll and nice chart.

I get a little frustrated myself for leaving it short. I practice at home at least two to three hours or more a week (15 minute intervals) and at home I drill the putts, but when I am playing a round it seems like I lose power somewhere and leave it short more than I would like.

Oh before the questions come here is the link to the Pozzy Thread (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=295&highlight=pozzy).

Here is that great putting diagram made into 30 smaller versions that can print on one sheet. You can find whatever uses you want, but I think I will use it with the Pozzy Putting Game and write in the distance of the missed putt. If you did this enough times, I think you could chart these in excel and you might see if your miss positions change as your distance changes. Should be real interesting.

I miss them all over the place, but mostly to the right... I have been struggling so much that I have started throwing my mid-range Buzzz... I hit the chains most of the time with this disc, but it tends to want to slide through the chains... I need to get the cheapest movable basket and set it up in the basement, and just throw disc after disc...

Most of my misses seem to miss to the right, ussually knicking the chains and bouncing off. I have "somewhat" repaired this by adding a little hyzer to my release.

I have improved my short putting game dramatically after watching this video and following Mark's advice. I have switched to only practicing with the putters (no more than 2) that I use when playing a round while limiting my putting practice to 15 minutes sessions (once a day).

You know the interesting thing about this pole is...

If you now know where you are missing your putts, you should be able to adjust where you are aiming and start hitting more putts.

If you miss right aim that much more to the left.

If you are short, imagine the basket that much farther back from where it really is and aim for that.

We should be able to compensate for these if this is where your misses are fairly consistent.

The only negative to this would be if your missing due to technique failure. When I miss right its because I dont release the disc with the right timing. So if I was to aim further to the left, I would now only hit dead center when I screwed up. My good releases would hit far left and have a greater chance of kicking out.

I agree that its good to know where you miss, but so that you can try to find a way to reduce that error, not try to compensate for it.

In the last tournament I played in I was making all my long putts from 50 feet and in but for some reason the ones within 10-15 feet that were wide open I hit the top or bottom of the rim. I compare it to a receiver who runs across the middle of a field and catches a ball in front of the DB's and just missing the linebackers but when I run a streak (straight ahead) and am all alone I drop it. It was just that kind of day but fortunately I was playing doubles so he made those for me. I was probably just overly excited about hitting the other big putts. I need to work on not rushing and relaxing.

I miss mine all over, but I know how to fix most of my problems...
miss high - lower the nose
miss low - raise the nose
miss right - change my hand placement on the disc

My buddy pointed out to me during the last round that when i was missing to the right, I was holding the disc around about 3 o'clock. When I changed my grip to about 12 or 1, I was dead center. It was weird but when I tried the throw without the disc, I noticed my hand was pointing off to the right before and straight at the basket afterward.

Consistently missing is worse than missing consistently. If you miss left over and over, you can usually correct it with one thing ( moving your back foot to square up better ). If your missing all over the place, then get your drives close.

the secret to making putts is consistency.......... be consistant in your stance, your grip, your breathing, and only use one type of putter for practice AND game. If you play with an Aviar, buy 3-4 more for the practice basket.

I've had my own basket for 12+ years and for the first 5 years, i had 3 Aviars, 3 Magnets, and two 76 Softies for practice. The only thing i got out of practice was a sore back from picking discs up off the GROUND.

I like the answer, "Ha, I don't miss putts." I wish that were true most of the time. Usually by the last 9 of 36 holes in a day I either will start hitting the front of the basket or like today I start hitting the top where the chains hang down from. I like the ones that go in best though.

Depending on the distance of the putt. Normally I'm short or I hit the basket (low). It's all a matter of how much risk/reward I can take. Safe bet is to lay-up and be short. It drives me nuts when you go for it and overshoot the basket by 50 feet. Add a stroke or two?

This is pretty cool. My friends and I play "around the world" like in basketball. The first shot is rather easy, and every shot gets a little farther/harder than the last. You can only use 2 discs, and if you miss both shots, you have to start all over. It really makes you focus, because it really sucks to have to start again from the beginning, or even worse to have to replay the first shot. lol

This is so true. I played for a lot of years before I realized that you should find one putter that works and stick with it, buy several of them and stick to that type of putter exclusively and you will be way more consistent. Recently I have been really frustrated with my putting, I was missing 15 footers and shanking lay up puts that I should have been able to drop right next to the basket, they were flying 20 feet to the left or right of the basket. I came home and dug out 5 old Aviar putt and approach discs from my "extras" stash and I have been only using them and getting much better results. The Aviar is what I started with and what works best for me. I was making the mistake of thinking there was this magic putter out there that would work wonders but what I realized is I had the right putters for me collecting dust the whole time.

Back to the basics.

Thats the worst feeling, your within a stroke or so of your friend and your playing a pretty tight game and then you miss a couple putts from like 10-15 feet and all confidence and swagger goes out the window after that.

If you are consistently hitting chains and having them fall out could you be throwing too hard? I have seen some guys really letting it rip on putts even when they are close. Maybe you need to let up a little. It seems like putts bouncing off chains and the cage should be pretty rare. When I miss I do it right, and really shank it. No doubt it was my fault.
