Okay, I know this may seem redundant, but there is a method to my madness. I'm going to use this thread as a reference when I email people in high places here in the Myrtle Beach area.
So...
Here is my question:
Would you come to Myrtle Beach to play Disc Golf, if we had an abundance of courses? A weekend of the Beach and Disc Golf? Well, it may not be as far fetched as one would think. As of today, Tuesday April 6, 2010, There are 7 courses, that I am aware of, planned for construction here in the Myrtle Beach area. Plus, we have 3 small courses here already. One of those three is supposed to be expanded into an 18 hole course, Loris Nature Center (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3763&mode=ci). One will be relocated to a new Park, once it's built. (East Bay Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3360&mode=ci)). The third will probably remain unchanged, but maybe inclined to host more tournaments. (Tupelo Bay (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1933))
This will give the Myrtle Beach area a total of 10 courses in the area.
That's 5 in Horry county, 4 in Georgetown county, and 1 at the Grand Park across from The Market Commons. (I'm still trying to find out more info about the Grand Park course)
The potential for these courses could be tremendous, if done right. I for one would love to see the PDGA (http://www.pdga.com/) more involved here, as well as the SCDGO (http://scdgo.net/). Even Manufacturers getting involved would be fantastic! So, let me know what you think.
Oh, Don't forget about the "Snowbird Factor". Disc Golf is all year round here in Myrtle Beach!
Thanks you all for responding!

To be completely honest I would come play Myrtle Beach only if I was visiting my family in Estill. I'm not at the point in my life where I would pick a destination solely for disc golf. Once the kids are older then maybe.

Great Disc Golf is about the ONLY feasible change that could get me down to visit my family when they stay in Myrtle Beach. Tell THAT to the local leaders.

Can we do something about those people who shoot off fireworks 10 feet away from me when I'm trying to have a quiet nighttime walk on the beach?

I can't argue about the fireworks. I like watching them from the pier, but it's annoying when you are walking along the beach.

I just mentioned this to my wife and her response was, "Whoooo, let's take a road trip." We're in.

Good deal! Keep checking back to this site, as I get details, I will post them on here. I would love to see Myrtle Beach become the Myrtle Beach of Disc Golf in addition to being the Myrtle Beach of Ball Golf. lol

We did Myrtle last summer and had a blast. DG was not the purpose but a bonus. Played both East Bay & Tupelo. Don't know if they would be a primary draw to return. We had a blast the week we went and probably would go back in the future. More DG would just be a bigger bonus.
We really enjoyed the Brookgreen Gardens and what a great place that would be for a course. ;)

Hunnington Beach state park across the street used to have a course, until Hugo took it out. The Baskets are now at Earlwood. Brookgreen would be an unbelievable place for a course!

The off season is great. Myrtle Beach reverts back into being a normal town. ...sorta! We still have all of the beach town things to do.

I'd go to Myrtle Beach as a fun family destination.
Disc golf courses are a bonus and should be marketed to the Commissions as a great family friendly activity.
I'm not in a position to travel anywhere for Disc golf so I can't really give an accurate answer.
BTW, I call Myrtle Beach the "Redneck Riviera". :p

I have not been to Myrtle Beach in over 10 years. For DG to bring me there they would have to be good courses not just a bunch of baskets and some tees. I can play on a challenging DG course here at the house. I do like to eat though and the beach, some good disc golf courses, and good eats might get me there.

We are the Monte Carlo of the Redneck Riviera! lol :D
That's pretty much the way it's marketed now. Come Play Putt-Putt and Disc Golf! I just hope they don't build all of the courses like that! I hope they throw in a few Solid courses! I do know that the new ones in Horry County are supposed to 18's. G'town, I'm not sure yet.

That's what I'm hoping for! So far, I haven't seen or heard any of the details for the courses. Hopefully I can pull it out of someone. Well, when and if you ever get back out here, you need to hit Prosser's country buffet! It will put THE HURTS to ya!

I spent two summers in North Myrtle, and have no desire to go back. Disc Golf is about the only thing that would give me a desire to go back.

There's your problem, you went to North Myrtle Beach. The south strand is a lot better. :p I prefer the beaches at Pawleys Island and Litchfield. A LOT LESS TOURISTY! IMO Well, the Irony is, the most recent course we had installed is in Loris, about 10 miles due west of NMB. That is the 9 holer that is supposed to be converted into an 18. From what I've gathered, it will be the First activity of the 4 courses in Horry county. There is one planned for NMB, at North Park, which is right off of 31, Caddy corner to Bell & Bell Pontiac. If you know where that is.

The two times I've been back since '93, NMB seems to have become much more touristy than it was even then. What keeps me from caring about ever going back is that there's really not a lot to do that I really enjoy. You've got the beach for any outdoor activities, and that's about it. There's no mountain biking, and there probably will never be. There's not really any good road biking. Nothing that resembles rock climbing, hiking, no cool swimming holes, or most any other fun thing to do up in the hills.
Basically, two summers was all I needed to realize I'm a much bigger fan of mountains than I am of beaches. Really it was only one summer, the second was icing on the cake.

I'll go to hell if the courses there are good. I'd love to DG all day and hit up a concert at the HOB, that'd be rad.

Hahaha... I know that's right! lol Hard Rock wasn't really that bad, I mean it could have been better. But I just think that it had a lot to do with bad economic timing, and they needed more rides. IMO I was bored after a 2 hours. I did see Kid Rock and Rev Run there though, Great Show!!! They have... well, had a great outdoor stage.
I've been to M.B. twice. I think that it was 2000 and 2001. I really enjoyed it. I wasn't discin' at the time so I wasn't aware of the dg scene... or lack there of.
Anyway, it is a haul for us at about 11 hours. So VA Beach has become more of the destination for us at about half the drive time. If I do make it back to M.B., having a nice course or two would only add to the trip.

VA beach is good too... and closer.

I figured I would post this here as well. I just found out that there is ANOTHER course that is proposed for MB. I don't have details yet, as I am waiting for another return email from the City. But this one looks to be real close to the beach itself. It's part of a revitalization project that is going to take place over the next 5 years. They are building a park, and it will be expanded upon from there. I know the Disc Golf Course is in included in the Projects final revision. When... That I'm still waiting on. Someone in the Myrtle Beach area is pushing Disc Golf. I'd really like to know who!

I have made some calls from Charleston myself, but I'm not "the ring leader"...
I did call a bunch of town officials in Georgetown to (A) offer congrats on the East Bay Park course. (B) Warn them that those loose temporary baskets may get swiped and strongly suggest they put in Innova Discatcher baskets instead. (C) Build more courses in Georgetown area for tourists who may be driving to Charleston, but might stay overnight in Georgetown to play disc golf instead.
Every little bit helps! :)
We had talked about going there this Spring Break but decided to stay home instead. It is a place that we want to visit and will in the future. More courses there would be a plus in my book.

Myrtle Beach update: In case you missed it, Loris Nature Park is now an 18 hole course, and the North Myrtle Beach course is either about to start, or has already started. Two more courses are not far behind.
Georgetown County is finalizing the plans for the First Park/DGC to go into Pawleys Island. According to a City of Myrtle Beach official, the "Grand Park" course is a long ways off, and the Withers Swash project is yet to be approved. So, that is the Latest update on the courses in the Myrtle Beach area.

I have family in the Pawley's Island/Litchfield Beach area near Myrtle Beach, and when I was down there in October of '09, I had to travel to Wilmington, NC at Castle Hayne Park to play a decent course. There was I think one lighted "disc golf" course at one of the Putt-putt/par 3 golf courses near the Myrtle Beach area, but I was hoping for a few more courses in the area. Hopefully something happens down there so I can play when I'm visiting family instead of accidentally tossing my discs into the Atlantic on the beach.
Cheers,

There is a Dx Destroyer somewhere in the Atlantic as well, from when I was doing the same thing! lol You are correct, Tupelo Bay (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1933) is the lighted Par 3/putt-putt/executive ball golf course. Now if you are down in litchfield, Georgetown has a small 9 hole course as well. East Bay Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3360). Pawleys Island is next on the list for getting a DG course, but it's being installed in a park that they are going to build. So the park has to come first, but the ball is already rolling and they should be starting construction on it in about 3 months. ...hopefully. (I used to live in Litchfield, now I'm up in Murrells Inlet.) Castle Hayne is well worth the trip! ...but it is a long A$$ drive from Pawleys though! lol

I certainly plan on making the trip back down to the Litchfield area. Are there a few courses closer than Wilmington that are worth trying, aside from the Tupelo Bay course? I may even be making the trip in the next month or two, and would love to do something besides lose another Avenger SS in the ocean. I'll probably make the drive to Wilmington as well, as I have family there. Last time I was there, a few locals were talking about another course being built to add to Castle Hayne Park in the area. Anyone know of this?
Cheers,

There are two more in Wilmington, Kure Beach and another whose name eludes me. (Perhaps Discjunkie or Brother Dave will chime in here). There are 6 in Charleston, but only 4 are accessible to the public. I highly recommend Trophy Lakes (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=783&mode=ci)! Charleston is about the same distance, perhaps a little closer, than Wilmington. Florence... isn't all that impressive. Although there is a new 18 hole course about 20 miles north of Darlington that is supposed to be pretty good, but I don't know much about it.

I've been playing for a short time, we got go myrtle every year and ive seen tupelo and thought that taht was only a golf course so i got more into disc golf and discovered that they had a course but the problem is its the only one in the area and its expensive for only nine holes. If they did get more courses installed you can sign me up

Oops, I forgot to post it in this one. Loris Nature Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3763) has now been upgraded to an 18 hole course, and there is a course being built in North Myrtle Beach. ...I'll update it, as I get more info. You can also check out East Bay (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3360) in Georgetown. The ball is rolling, and they are popping up!

Well the Tupulo Bay tourney already makes tons of people from NC make a special trip to MB to play DG so the answer is yes.
This is very true! The downside is that they don't promote the Tournament locally (They being Tupelo Bay). We were the only regular DG'rs for the longest time, and they never told us about it. I even asked them if they were going to have a tournament, and they would just shrug and say "I don't know". Then they would conveniently mention "Hey, you know we had a tournament last week?". It was quite frustrating! The first one we missed was in March. So mental note was taken on March. In Feb the following year, they said "Oh, it was last December!":mad::wall:
