View Full Version : Like a Leopard but more stable?

Can anyone recommend a driver that is like a leopard but more stable? I have recently started throwing the Pro Leopards... I like the small rim and the glide.. but I would like to have another disc in my bag that is like a pro leopard but more overstable. Viking is the only thing I have thought of so far, any other ideas?

You might like the.....
1. Gazelle
2 . Banshee or the Millennium EXP1
My DX Cheetah is ever so slightly more stable than the my DX Leopard... but the Cheetah is only available in DX plastic. The shape/feel is very similar between the two.

Don't fear base plastic. DX and D flies farther than the denser premium plastic, and the slower drivers like a Leopard don't have those fragile wings the super-fast drivers have that get beat up so fast in DX.
I'd recommend a D Cyclone or a DX Gazelle.

I agree with the recommendations for the Gazelle. Same specs but less turn. I love my Leopard, though.

Get a Champion Eagle(mine is 170). Throw it while warming up,or when your just out on the course messing around.Hell throw during any round you play. Get it good and "seasoned". Once you get it "broken in" you can flip it, and if done proper, it will run the line you tell it to. Just my opinion based on the Eagle I have.

Hmm, hadn't thought of a Gazelle.. a beat-up eagle sounds like a good option too!

Eagle all the way I have 2 Eagles I could use on most any shot 1 9X KC Pro the other 12X KC champion
not as flippy as the Leopard, Not as over-stable as the Gazelle. The XS by Discraft in X plastic broken-in is also really good.

get you a millenium QJLS its what got me started playing good and made me wanna keep playing otherwise i would have quit cause i coundnt find anything that would go straight and far, if you turn that over try a teebird. they also make the QJLS in cheaper plastic as the JLS.

I've tried the XS, but I prefer the XL. Not a fan of the millenium discs that I have thrown... The teebird is a good disc, but not what I'm looking for. Maybe there is a gateway disc out there that is similar to the leopard but more stable? sabre maybe?

check out the interactive flight guide at marshallstreetdiscgolf.com its got a few different brands. I've thrown alot of those discs and its pretty acurate

sabre maybe?Sabres are good discs, but from my experience you have to get them higher and throw them harder then any other fairway driver. They don't have very much in common with the nice-N-easy Leopard.

Try a TL....I threw leopards a LOT because of the glide, however when my distance came up I need more turn <stable>. I happened upon a TL that I picked up at a tourney because I liked the color. Well when I threw it I was amazed at how it flew. My leopard is now out of my bag and my TL is in its place. Flies straight like the leopard, you can flip it when you try, but has just a slight amount more stability at the end of the flight.

I like the TLs.. but it isn't stable enough. I've been looking for something that feels like a leopard but will finish with a hyzer when thrown on an anhyzer line.

For me the Eagle X fades at the end of the flight even after it is beat up. You have to be careful not to get an Eagle L, because that's the main difference in the two Eagles to me. The L will flip and stay flipped, the X will flip and fade back.
Of course, the Eagle is the most mixed-up poorly marketed driver in the Innova line-up. They have run L's and X's in every plastic, except I think all the Star Eagles are X's. Plus with the Star you get the bonus of abbreviating the name of the disc...Star Eagle X. It's fun to walk up to the tee and loudly announce "I need some SEX" and watch the other dudes in you group slowly move far away...:p

if your looking for something around the same speed with a less beveled edge like the faster drivers have and something for tunnel shots maybe a star cro its also good for shorter sidearm shots.

Is there an easy way to tell whether a DX eagle is an X or an L?

Is there an easy way to tell whether a DX eagle is an X or an L?Eagle X's have a notch in the wing. The Eagle L's don't.

What about the Teebird did you not like? I ask that because IMO the Eagle is very similar to the Teebird. The Teebird is faster with more glide but they feel and fly close to the same. Now, the Eagle X will be way more stable than a Teebird but maybe that's what you are after

On the subject of the Eagle molds, I got a 12x Eagle that looked and felt diffrent from my 9 X So I e-mailed Innova They said " The original Eagle was an L type mold with a fairly flat beveled edge. It was initially supposed to be slightly understable. We subsequently made an X type or TeeBird type Eagle that seemed to be the mold that most people wanted. Eventually we switched to X only Eagles as it is today." So most likely if you get a new eagle it will be an Eagle X. But are you looking for more of a driver or more mid-range feel???

just bought a star skeeter today and put it side by side with my champ leopard and its got the same shape just a slighty more rounded edge its a speed 5 which is one slower than the leopard and its got 0 turn and 1 fade which is one fade less than the teebird, it looks more like fairway than a midrange and it feels alot like the leopard in my hand

Considering all the old discs for sale out there from nine years of running Eagle L's, you had still better be pretty careful when you pick up an Eagle.

Didn't someone post a picture on DGR with both molds side by side? It was a small picture with just the beveled parts of the discs and each was labeled... I can't find it anywhere but it made the difference in the two molds VERY easy to distinguish.

I didn't know that part. Should have asked for more details, about the switch.
Where do you find innova's announcements? I can post photos of my two Eagles.

I went through all my Eagles last night and marked them "L" vs. "X". The difference just by running my finger over the underside-edge seemed pretty obvious. It also made a LOT more sense why one of the KC Pro Eagles in my bag was much flippier than the other.
Do you have something similar for the TeeRex vs. TeeRex-X?

Whoa! Lots of credit for nothing. I just went to DGR, found the thread in question, copied the picture and posted it.
I traded all my TeeRex. The only one left in the house is the one my dino-loving daughter has hanging on the wall in her room. So, no can do...unless I can goad someone on DGR to post a picture I can copy and take credit for. :D

Regular TeeRex (DX & Star):

http://www.innovadiscs.com/discs/starteerex.html
TeeRex-X (Champ & Star (nice stamp)):
http://www.innovadiscs.com/discs/cfrchteerexx.html
http://www.innovadiscs.com/discs/cfrstarteerexx.html
But I recall reading somewhere that the TeeRex-X was released as regular Star runs for a while, causing much confusion.

Why does PDGA let them get away with this? The Eagle was listed twice on the approved disc list but I only saw 1 Tee Rex listed. Would they both not have to be approved separately???

Just wanted to update this thread.. my search for a more overstable leopard is over.
I tried out a few vikings and different Eagle molds. The Viking turned over too easily, and the Eagle was good for hyzers, but not the line I wanted. What I finally settled on is the Discraft Talon. It has a rim and dome that is very similar to the leopard.. Granted this disc is much faster and more overstable, but is exactly what I was looking for! Sadly, this disc is out of production.. If anyone has an elite Z Talon laying around, let me know.

yea, I saw that they had a few in stock.. Including shipping it would be $18+ just for one disc - seems a bit high to me.
