Curious about how long you can keep discs? I am also curious if anyone has some old ones that they would sell to a new discgolfer. I am in Wisconsin so if anyone in WI has any I would consider them, I am just trying to get started in the sport.

Most folks I know hang on to their discs until they lose them, or until they are so beat up they won't fly right anymore. Those discs usually end up on a wall or in a box in the basement. Disc golfers get pretty attached to their discs.
If you have a Play-It-Again sports store in your area, that would be a good place to start. They often have used discs. I would also look on Ebay.
You might also try a scuba dive to the bottom of your nearest water hazard, though you are required to call the numbers listed on discs if there are any.
If you ever want to throw up north, give me a shout, and good luck.

Id have to agree with Geoffro about being attached to discs. Ive only ever stopped using a disc after loosing it. and the beat discs I have are actually kinda special to me becuaseI know their flight patterns so well, they are like a fine wine to me. :D
One thought though ... discs are generally pretty cheap that you could buy a couple new ones for not much more than you would get them used ... my play-it-again sports is actually generally more expensive than buying new discs (go figure). You may actually be better off just buying a few new discs outright.

Good points, Valk. Also, Wal-Mart has recently started carrying discs, starting in my area at about 6 bucks.

You could try Craigslist. I saw someone selling some discs on there when I started.

let's be accurate...it's not REQUIRED that you call the number, but it's the right thing to do...

This is true, but it still feels like it should be. :)

When I decided I wanted to give disc golf a try last March I found 9 drivers (stars and champions) on craigslist for $30. I'm sure they were discs that someone pulled out of a pond, but they worked perfectly for me. There are good deals out there if you keep your eyes open.

I've been trading/selling/buying discs through DiscGolfReview.com buy/sell/trade forums (http://www.discgolfreview.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=7) for a few years now...and so far, every single trade has gone through (though 2 took a little while). I've only had a few trade offers that weren't fair in my opinion (eg - someone wanting to trade me a used DX disc for a new Star disc), but generally speaking, everyone on there is honest, knows what a fair trade is, and won't try to scam you.

I agree with Rusty on this one -- lots of folks post up on those boards and often are some good/great deals on new or lightly used plastic that people are clearing out. A lot of disc golfers are people who LOVE trying new plastic, just to see how the latest/greatest/most-hyped disc flies... then they don't like it. So they sell what they don't like.
Also, you've got a lot of Ams who know what they like, but place in tourneys and take discs home that they may not throw, and then trade/sell them on the forums. So you can sometimes get a lot of cool tourney stamps from all across the country at a good discount.

I always thought that if you go swimming for them they are fair game (but you should always call if you find them in woods, etc). I don't expect any of the discs I've chunked in the water back.

i found two good discs in the woodlands today, and one has a phone number with no area code and i tried both the houston ones (281 and 713) in front of the number on the disc and neither of them were the owners....would this be sufficient effort to return it before i declare it as mine?

Absolutely...I had the same thing happen to me. You did your part...it is not your fault the person was that small picture minded.

You missed the other Houston area code: 832.
Which course was it?

hey ERicJ im at my parents house in NW houston (cypress) for another week and i was wondering if there were any good courses near here...i usually just go to the woodlands but its kinda far, i am within 5 min of 1960/249 to give you an idea of where i am at....think u can help me find a good course that isnt too far?

I think you have an obligation to call the number no matter where you find a disc. If I pull one out of the drink I assume it was lost and could not be found. Same thing as if I find one buried in weeds and nettles - lost and could not be found. It shouldn't matter if it's wet, dry, or frozen - call the number.

i do call them, cause i find quite a bit of them, but i feel if person 1 gets in nasty stinky cold water to see if person 2 decided it wasnt worth their time to get it, then person 1 earned it. if person 2 expected to get their disc, they could have gotten it themselves. like i said, i call #'s, but i share the opinion of a lot of the people who i call, they just let me keep it.

Show up at McDade Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/../course.php?id=666) tomorrow (Sat) morning for a bring-your-partner Doubles event. Register by 9:45am, tee at 10am. Non-sanctioned. http://hfds.org/vbull/showthread.php?t=243 There may be other people showing up looking for partners.
McDade Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/../course.php?id=666) is a great course. I like Terramont Park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/../course.php?id=263) (9 holes) in that area too.

FYI on Spring Valley DGC (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/../course.php?id=1858): you're not allowed to go disc diving in any water on that course. And any discs you do find are supposed to be turned into Lost & Found at the club house.

It sounds like you're talking about making a choice to leave a disc you can see, and if you were willing to get wet, you could 100% surely get it. Maybe you have a point there. If I can see my disc, and just don't want to get my footsies wet I guess I deserve to lose the disc.
Where I lose discs is generally in deep lake water, or in muck and duck/goose sh!t so deep you're in to your knees if you go in. I generally go in anyway - deep lake or goose sh!t, but lots of times you still can't find it. Lots of times I find other discs and not my own, and I call the number.
Happy swimming. ;)

SV is nice if you like heavily wooded, technical courses. Another FYI on that is that the uber-long "Power 9" holes are closed on the weekend, and you can only play the "Finesse 18" layout. But if you're there on a weekday be sure to hit up all 28 holes. (Yeah, there are really 28... even though they have another layout called the "Total 27" that uses a connector hole, and skips Finesse #6.... Dunno why they didn't just call it "Total 28".)

the water is about mid-chest high and you cant see through it...if you are a foot in you are already three feet deep, so if you toss it in you gotta take a dip to get it back, but most people just leave them. and its not uncommon to see people swimming to get all the discs out, in fact there has been someone there every time i have been out there and when there isnt thats when i hop in. if you toss it in that water and leave it i assume you are knowingly giving it away, the same with leaving it anywhere. i call to return them but many others dont, like the two kids out there today selling discs with #'s on the back, one under the pavillion and one by hole 3 teebox. the reason i call is because the whole DG karma thing. i mean its a nice thing to do but if someone else refuses to call i cant blame them.
