Ok, check this out. I have been informed, from a very credible source, that Occone County is in the process of designing a new course. Not only is it going to be another to play in the area, they are designing it to be created to tourney quality. $20,000 put into it. No idea the finish date or when they start. I will however keep everyone informed on its progress. It's going to be at Occone Veterans Park across the street from Herman c. Micheal. Word on the street is that the county wants to hold tourneys there and have a course which challenges the Athens-Clark County's Sandy Creek. I'm FREAKING STOKED if this is legit!!!! :hfive:

Sweet!

While you are stoked you need to set up a trip to Fly Boy...it is incredible.

I can't wait to get out there, hopefully soon. How did the invitational go?? finish with any placement?

I didn't play, hurt my arm the day before...wife beat the other woman for rec womens champ...I carried her ridiculously heavy bag all day.

One round took 6 hours and that was with maybe 2 holes of waiting or more like taking a much needed break.

That's awesome. Sandy Creek is always a pleasure. Oconee is close enough to play both upon a visit, but still too many barking fans around that area for my taste. :D

Damn bill that def puts a huge damper on the rest of the season. Congrats to the success of your spouse!... Fender088, how often do you play Sandy Creek? Thats quite the ride out from Carrollton!

A bunch of kids I went to high school and boarding school with go to UGA. I've played Sandy Creek multiple times, but not in the past 6 months.

Any man that carries his wife's bag deserves something special. Did she at least cook you a burger and open a brew for you??? Did she pay for some take-out Bojangles?? Anything? I hope so.

Actually, I'm reliably informed that this was dinner: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2322/4509564281_29a9d6f0dd.jpg

Christy didn't cook it though.

BTW just looked up that park...definitely looks like plenty of land to do it...could be a really nice one...judging by Herman C. Michael I bet they will do an honorable job.

well lets put it this way, Herman C. would definately be a clutch practice course just to drive 1/2 a min. across the street to start a tourney at Veterans. I've been out there to watch my sister play softball, and they obviously have plenty of room to develop a real groovy course.

Anyone here ever heard of Dahlonega, GA?

Just wondering if anyone knows of it and if there are any courses being put together near there. It's my hometown and the closest course is about 30 minutes away.

Haven't heard about any courses going in there.

$20,000 is a truckload of money for a course! It darned well better be top-notch for that kind of money. :)

As for Dahlonega, I know just where it is, and as far as I know, the easiest course to get to from there would be Central Park in Cumming.

Central is absolutely worth the 30 minute drive. I'm trying to decide whether I'll give it a 4 or a 4.5 rating in my coming review. Probably a 4 so I don't have to feel bad about giving it the same rating as Flyboy. Because Flyboy is all of a 5-star course once Kelly puts in high quality baskets. Until then I can't feel good giving it more than a 4.5. But giving Central a 4 may force me to downgrade Alex and White Oak to 3.5, which will force me to downgrade Redan and ERP (maybe not ERP) to 3.0, which will force me to downgrade Oregon Park to 2.5, which will force me to downgrade Wills to 1.5. Funny what experiencing new courses will do for you. :)

As for the 6-hour round at Flyboy, I do hope you brought yourself plenty of sunscreen and water. I'm not surprised it took that long, but I'd be surprised if you survived without provisions. Did the locals have their kids out selling drinks and snacks again? That was awesome in April for the Ignitor.

Anyway I'm rambling, but it's downright exciting to hear about so many parks in Georgia stepping up. I know you've been hearing it for months and months now, but we're inching towards a second 18 at Oregon Park. Kevin McCoy says he's getting fairly close to a design there, and the Cobb Disc Golf Club is hoping the fundraising goes well enough that we can break ground on the new course in June or July. I know it's a wait-and-see thing for people not on the board of directors, but be assured, we're not just leading you on or spinning our wheels. :wall: I could wish we were moving faster myself, but it would have been impractical to do so before the county did all their infrastructure development anyway. The end result should be 36 Kevin-McCoy designed holes at Oregon Park.

There was a discussion a few months ago on the Atlanta Disc Golf Organization Board concerning a new course in Dawsonville, which is not too far from Dahlonega:

Oconee Co, GA.
Yes, there are stirrings for a course at Veteran's Park. HT and I have mapped it out several months ago. It (the proposal) will actually go before the BOC at the end of the month, according to the Rec Advisory Board.

Just came back from Wills (home course), definitely not 1.5 worthy! I'd give it a 2.5 easily, it's definitely a course that grows on you. Just stay out of that little river thing, recently they put up a warning sign about chemical treatment in it. And it smells funny.

Sequoyah Park is also worth playing, if only to look at the last 6 holes. That course designer must have been under the influence of... something. I don't even know...

Easy solution: move Flyboy up and leave everything else at the same. When they get new baskets, it can be a 5.5.

The proposal for the course at Oconee Veteran's Park was tabled due to further research concerning wetland mitigation, private funding/sponsorship concerns, and a couple of minor issues w/ the administration.

It will come back before the board in the very near future.

Yeah I wouldn't feel comfortable taking Wills down that far (I've played it many times since my office is only a couple of miles away), but my ratings in general might be inflated a bit anyway. I'd honestly like to see the ratings system go from 1 to 10 rather than from 0 to 5. My brain grasps 10-point by wholes ratings better than 5-point by halves ratings. Not sure why, but I suspect others would as well.

Just got out of a meeting w/ the Director...we will re-design some of the holes. Good news is that the course is still in the works, and,he OK'd opening more property for the course.

Updates will be forthcoming.

As soon as I finish up some time sensitive projects, HT and I will start laying out the holes. The director wants the proposal pretty soon, so I've been busting my arse trying to get everything else done!

I'll post more as it comes!

I've already mentally mapped out most of the holes, just by walking around at the back of the park...

A 9-hole course is up for consideration next Tuesday in Clayton in Rabun County. The city council just needs to see the layout before giving the go ahead. It's an Eagle Scout project. I'm acting mentor on the project and have done the design and I'm helping with the fund raising.

So any new updates on this course? It's only about an hour or hour and a half out from me and I would LOVE to have another worthy course to play out that way. Bhuff mentioned something about this to me a week or so ago when we were out at Herman and I had kind of forgotten about it until I saw this thread.

MrFixIt is the one who would know about any updates. Last time I checked with him there had been little to no progress and the course was not a priority for the county/gov't/rec department/etc.

... I'm really hoping it somehow does get put in at some point. It would be nice to have another course close to Athens.
