View Full Version : 3000!
The site just hit 3000 active courses tonight. Way over 3k if you count extinct courses.
I just thought it was a pretty cool milestone. The sport is definitely growing as a lot of courses were added in 2008. Hopefully 2009 will see even more courses installed.

Well I know the Charlotte area is going to try to up the count this year. One course, 521/Elon is set to add another 18 holes, Stumpy Creek north of town is going from 9 to 18 real soon, and there are 3 new courses that may get put in this year. And if Cornelius, NC (just north of Charlotte) will ever start on Robbins Park, that will have 18 holes as well.

I wish some of the other countries around the world would get their courses put in here too. I would love to see more pictures of those courses also.
There are courses from several countries but pictures are tough to come by. Sweden is big into dg from what I can tell and we have pics of the course in Antarctica :)

I hope the rest of the country are seeing what St. Louis is seeing. We got a new course in Alton, IL last month and one opened in Fenton, MO this week. I'm not going to review either until there is some work finished (tee signs, landscaping, etc.) but Rocksprings will probably be a 3.5 and Unger is going to b a 4 or 4.5 if it cleans up nice. So that's two nice 18-hole courses added to St. Louis disc golf. I hope what we are seeing is not just more courses, but more quality courses.

The Antarctica pictures were interesting. Look like they are using Innova Discatcher Sport baskets. I am thinking those portables are pretty safe. I don't suppose anyone will be stopping by to steal them anytime soon. :D

rockspring opened in early november, and its gonna be better than a 3.5!
i'll make it out to unger myself when it gets a little warmer, but it does look like that course has great potential too.
i've been contemplating trying to get a 9-holer put in at sunset park here in florissant, but that endeavor will wait for warmer weather too, and some input from the RCF.

Its great to see the 3000 courses now on here
On a side note I was looking at the # of members on here and the member list was at 3100 even. Its great to see how much this site is growing and expanding ... and the future only looks brighter! :D :D

rockspring opened in early november, and its gonna be better than a 3.5!Maybe. That's why I'm waiting to rate it. Right now I think it's a nice course, but I'm not nearly as impressed with it as I am with Unger. Right now I'd rate Rockspring a notch below Sioux Passage and JB, which would make it a 3.5. But...it's cold and the course is still in rough shape. I'm keeping my mind open to the possibility that it might rate a 4.
Also, it's why we all get to write our own reviews. We don't have to agree.
Which is all beside the point. Rockspring is a solid course, one that shows off the sport well. If every town in America had a course like Rockspring, disc golf would be HUGE! If all of the new courses are of a similar quality, disc golf will be headed in the right direction.

If I recall correctly, the 2,500th course to post on the PDGA course directory was in 2007. So in less than two years we have gained 500 courses. When I started playing there wasn't 500 courses, period. That was after the sport had already been around for over 12 years. One of the reasons the tradition of traveling around to play disc golf sprang up was because if you stayed home, you would just play one course over and over. I think there were seven courses in the entire state of Missouri when I started playing. We drove four hours one way to play Swope Park not because Swope Park was so great, but because we couldn't stand to play another round at White Birch. Now there are over 50 course in Missouri. Hell, there are now seven quality 18 hole courses just in the St. Louis area. There really is no reason to drive four hours to Kansas City anymore. Things have certainly grown.
The PDGA is still at a little under 2800 :D

Not to be a Debbie-downer, but I hope that quality is being stressed over quantity. A well-designed course is worth 10 course slapped into place by an over-eager parks department or a clueless Boyscout.
After that somber note... yay for DGCR! :D
