Heading to SoCal from Michigan from 1/30 to 2/10. Could use some advice or information on courses, walk-on leagues or other thoughts or suggestions. Thinking of checking out La Mirada tuesday league. Thanks.

I may be staying near there, plus there is a good restaurant nearby. What's a good time to go to Sylmar? Any weekly events?

Huntington Beach isn't a bad track, not great but worth a play if you are near there.
Whittier Narrows and El Dorado are decent urban park courses.

Sylmar is my home course. The best time to check it out would be the early afternoon as the locals usually come out around 3. There are weekly events on thursdays at 3:30. Sometimes there is enough golfers for tuesday afternoon tournaments as well. And it is true... you might meet Steve there in the afternoons as well.
Other must plays in SoCal would be:
Oak Grove - first dg course in the country
La Mirada - famous for big tournaments
Emerald Isle - cute because its on a ball golf course and you get to drive carts
Have fun! Say hi to the fellas at Sylmar for me.

coyote point is great, at least that's what all my friends that have played it tell me. i got into disc golf and was in the bay area so i have not played it yet but it is on my wish list. every time i go to socal i play a new course and this presidents day i will be giving this one a go.

Coyote Point is a cool course to camp at and play. It has a lot of big arm shots mixed in with some technicality and some major hiking. It should be nice weather there in January too. The only problem is that it is pretty far from anything in L.A. and the other courses. I don't know what your itinerary is... but if you were traveling north and wanted to work it in, it would be worth it. Otherwise, it wouldn't necessarily make a great basecamp from which to hit courses.

I would definitely recommend Sylmar, Oak Grove, La Mirada and El Dorado. Sylmar and Oak Grove are about 20 minutes apart so you could play a morning round at one and then do the other in the afternoon. I would start with Oak Grove because it tends to get congested later in the day. La Mirada and El Dorado are also about 20 minutes apart. You could do a morning round at El Dorado then shoot over to La Mirada where you could play the Lakeside course the Backside course or both if you are up for it. Coyote Point at Lake Casitas is a nice course and like DSCJNKY said it is pretty far from the LA area so it might be hard getting out there. Anyway you go, you should have lots of fun out here. Good luck!

I would recomend the Lake Casitas Coyote course for camping. There is also camping at Oak Grove park in Pasadena but I have no idea if it's good or not.
The LA courses I would go to are La Mirada, Sylmar, Oak Grove and El Dorado.
Other courses not mentioned yet that are very cool are Evergreen in Santa Barbara (a little far from LA but not if your at lake casitas) and Chavez Ridge DGC at Elysian (the Course by Doger stadium). Chavez Ridge is not too long but the shots are a lot more Technical plus There are views of LA and you can do something in Downtown afterwards.

While we're at it, any good live music venues/clubs in LA, like say...The Whisky A Go-Go in 1966? Thanks in advance.
