View Full Version : Signature UPHILLs

Okay, everybody likes to throw long bombs off cliffs, down hills, "top-of-the-world" stuff. But what goes down must come up, right? Is there such a thing as a signature UPhill hole? I mean, you expend just as much energy throwing the disc, why not share some of the glory with those poor ignored uphills???
:baz picks up the phone:
Hello? ... Hey, 'sup! ... uh ... yeah ... sure, I'll be at the 27th tee at De La Veaga. See you there :D

The first one that comes to mind for me is the "A" hole @ Austin Ridge Bible Church (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3694&mode=ci). It's a 261 ft (par 4!!) I don't recall ever playing a par 4 260 ft hole. It must be a 45 degree uphill slope w/ upwards of 100 feet elevation gain. I finally got my first 3 on that hole last time out there & it took two great shots & a solid putt.
The second one that comes to mind is #9 @ Circle C (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=542&mode=ci). It's only 202 feet & not nearly as difficult as the one I mentioned above, but it does take a solid drive on a good line to set you up for the deuce. An errant drive can make for a tough par.

^This, then you fire back down a cliff on #11. If you're out of shape, DON'T play this course in the summer or bring plenty of water, I thought my friend was going to have a heart attack last weekend at this course. A LOT of elevation change and water comes into play on a few holes. Nice course but physically challenging in this great Georgia humidity.
Also, that picture doesn't do it justice, it's a lot more steeper than it appears here, lol.

I love hole 5 at Idlewild. It's not a pure uphill hole, but after your first shot down a small hill and into the woods across a creek, you shoot back up a long wooded tunnel. It's always been a tough hole for me, I can't bite off that much distance uphill and through a narrow fairway without ending up in the rough.

Hole 1, 2 & 3 at Beaver Ranch (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2488&mode=ci). These three make out-of-towners and locals alike huffing and puffing and bad putts can easily roll all the way down the hill. All of these holes are less that 300 feet but are easily some of the hardest holes on the course because of the sheer upslope.

That might be my least favorite hole at Idlewild. The shape of the uphill portion of that hole is tight and curving but do-able if you were throwing from a tee pad in just the right spot (I would love that hole if that is what it was).
The problem is that landing zone is not much bigger than a tee pad (at least not much wider).......so unless you hit that perfectly with a putter off the tee (which is outside an acceptable margin of error for even the best players), you are left with a putter shot, putter shot and tap-in. This equals boring!

Fair criticism, I definitely can see that. I guess I've gotten lucky in the way my tee shot gets knocked down the few rounds I've played there, and had an open look up the hill for my second shot. It is a tiny little area to shoot for though, especially with the creek ob down in the bottom.

hole number 7 at brown deer. http://www.dgcoursereview.com/gallery.php?id=1042&mode=gal# The pin was recently moved so it's on top of that sledding hill. It's not an uphill hole, just an uphill pin. Very fun though

most signature uphill hole I can think of is Hole #2 at Kensington toboggan. its a par five and it takes every bit of 3 bombs to get up there.

Hole 18 at Winthrop Gold is a classic risk reward hole (when the yellow ropes are up): How far do you want to push your drive up a narrowing fairway to get close for a lower risk upshot onto a treacherous green?
Another favorite of mine design-wise is Renny Gold #10 (beauty-wise it is ugly!). The way it was when this video (http://www.charlottedgc.com/images/renaissance/Renny_10G.mpg) was shot is very cool - as unique a hole as I have ever seen. The forced up-n-over approach was genius. I am very disappointed that they changed it by clearing all the brush on that up-n-over (and widening the fairway on the first leg) since the designer did not like it as an easy par-5 (for Gold players - I felt fine with a 5!) that could be albatrossed (a 2 on a par-5) with an "ace" 2nd shot thumber.

How about hole 1 at Stafford Lake? The length varies greatly depending on which tee/pin combo you play, but its plenty steep. A rough start to a round to be sure.
I remember playing a steep, uphill, right to left curving, narrow, heavily wooded hole when I went to the quad cities. Sorry, can't remember which course though.

Also, the opening Hole #1 on Justin Trails Classic (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1406&mode=ci)...300' from the longs, and wide open...but it's somewhere around a 30-35 degree incline all the way, and when the wind's blowin' you're in trouble! Not a terribly tough hole, and you might as well take your 2 or 3 here since you won't be getting many more for the remaining 17, except for the very deuceable downhill over-the-pond shot on #11.

First, there's the walk to the first tee at Stafford; and then, yes the first uphill is brutal. I did like the way streams were coming down the hill in a free form way when I was there.
The Quad cities course you are thinking of is West Lake and from the long tee; that one is not only uphill crazy; but very narrow; and a seven is very doable; and our crew has been there four times now, without a one of us doing very well on that hole as of yet. There is more than one good uphiller on that course.

Can't believe Z-B hole #2 hasn't been mentioned here yet. You have to have a good 400 foot throw, to make the top of the hill, that is only like 350 foot away. The pics under reviews don't give it justice. One reviewer even said this hole is "a joke". He must have a noodle arm. I'll try to get some decent pics/vid that show the holes qualities later today.

Let's try this....
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/3373/affe50fa.jpg
Hole 5 at Naples
202' straight up the guy, heavily wooded on both sides and an elevation change that is just subtle enough to make you forget about it so you worm burn and hate yourself. Being good at this hole feels GREAT.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/2/d424e724.jpg
Hole 9 at Ellison Park
Personally, I HATE this hole, but it's still a signature hole...just not a beloved one.
This hole is 470' playing up the same hill that 2 tees ago made you feel alive and proud of the sport...now you're thinking 'This isn't so bad! It's sort of flat here, and I can play right between those trees!' Then the winds kicks you in the face and your shot just clips that tree and gets shut down and then you're suddenly trying to putt from 20' out and 15' down and you've just lost the will to live...fortunately the next hole is simple and fun and then you get to:
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/2/bcc0259b.jpg
Hole 11 at Ellison Park
195' that plays up a fast hill and then goes to the right behind some guardian trees on a small plateau. One of those holes that can range from a 2-4 very easily. A 2 is actually a lot harder to get than you'd think, especially if you have to throw the shot RHBH.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/7/c7e53a74.jpg
Hole 13 at Basil Marella Park
283' and pretty fun. What you don't see is that there's a fairly wide stream off to the right just out of frame and that anything that still makes it up to the top of that hill still could hit any of the million trees up there and roll into the drink. If DiscJon decides to chime in with a Thanksgiving story...I might have to kill him. Before this hole touched me in my private areas on that fine holiday, I really loved this hole. I've had one day where this course hurt me EVEN WORSE...but I haven't had any real troubles with it since, I just play is safe with a BuZzz up the middle and then throw soft putters from there.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/6/b6f2cb84.jpg
Hole 7 at Parma DGC
300' and the first bit of it is this beast of a hill. I've taken to tossing a tomahawk up the hill with the goal of pushing it out further. A BH toss just has too many ways it can fail and leave you halfway up this hill or just at the top of it. After the hill it plays super flat across the opposite side of the park from the 1st hole's fairway (makes sense if you know what the hell I'm talking about) and it plays through under and around some trees that do just enough getting in your way to make it fun. It would take a miracle of a first of 2nd shot for most players to get a 2 on this hole, 3's still take some skill and determination, 4's are pretty common.
These are all of the uphill holes around me, and other than hole 9 at Ellison I think they're a lot of fun!

Iron Hill in DE (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2737). Hole 17 pro to long pin position is an 860' par 6... and when I say par 6, I mean it. It is a beautiful, epic, signature hole up a long, sinuous fairway with a gorgeous set of stone steps at the end up to the pin... One of the most beautiful and challenging holes in the country. Only a handful of 4s have ever been carded on the hole... and it takes several good throws to take the birdie 5.

I was going to mention Iron Hill 17. Its not crazy elevation, but its a crazy sig hole.
Quakers Challenge hole 1 is probably the steepest I've played and one hell of a welcome to the course. I almost fell backwards down the hill on my upshot.
Hawk Hallow hole 9 is fairly intimidating and seen a few discs roll back into the creek.

Number 8 at Fox Chase in Albemarle NC is my choice for an uphill hole of agony. I am usually huffing and puffing that I have to wait a couple minutes to throw my second shot. According to my Garmin it has 80 feet of rise in 287 feet from the short tees 385 from the long. It also is a dogleg left about half way up the hill from the short tee. It seems I score the same rather I am playing the short or the long tees. I have only seen one 2 scored on that hole and that was from the white tee, it was cause for a celebration. http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/659/099a05bd.jpg

Tough to understand from the video, but the hole goes straight up steeply off the tee. There's a window that most like to hit that's elevated past the initial slope. I threw the hammer down, and had a putt. 185 ft, + 75 elevation
