View Full Version : Score Tracking
It's finally here.. score tracking!
I kind of want to call this a beta to let you guys play around with it, check to see if anything serious is broken and then I can flush all the stats and start with a fresh slate free of errors. The reason I am inclined to do that is there are a lot of things being tracked and a simple error can throw off quite a few stats.
I've been playing with it for a while now and I think I have most of the bugs ironed out. I will play around with it as well a little more before clearing out all the scores/stats and officially going live.
If you guys have any suggestions, comments, etc. please post'm here or email me.
To get to the score tracking, go to your dashboard and click the Scorebook tab and you're off. Only courses that are in your Played list are available for score tracking. Once I get all the bugs ironed out in the next day or two I plan on adding a button and possibly recent rounds to the course pages.
I just posted this on DGR and thought I'd cross-post here since it has some additional info:
You can take a peek at my profile at the link below to get an idea of what it looks like:
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/scorebook.php?mid=1 (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/../scorebook.php?mid=1)
The scores, etc. I have in their are bogus as I've been doing a lot of testing trying to nail down any bugs I could find. If you're already a member there please feel free to give it a test run, submit a few rounds and tell me what you think. I will probably integrate the scores into the course info pages.. something like Recent Rounds but I don't have plans for any sort of leaderboard since I think it would encourage some of the less honorable people to put in phony scores just to be on top.
I will be clearing out all scores/stats in the next day or two after testing is complete so don't start putting in all your rounds just yet ;)
One other thing you may/may not notice.. choosing a tee and/or par will fill in the appropriate spots on the scorecard if the site has that information for that course.

I just started using dgscore.com and found yours to be similar. But if added to the site, it is a great asset. All of the features of a bunch of sites all bundled up in to one delicious site. I LIKES! It would be nice if the course you picked from your played list could incorporate the hole info into the score sheet. You would need to have the available option to edit this though with the varying pin location (some pins in a or b placements). That way, you wouldn't have to enter it yourself. I guess I'll have to start keeping count of my putts too just so I can fill out that section. At first, I thought it was pointless, but the more I think about it, the more you track, the more you can improve your game...
Glad you like it :)
I addressed the par/distance thing 2 minutes before your post.. the site will grab the current pin position distances and pars assuming they've been entered in the course profile. The pars/distances are also editable in case one of the distances is off from the current course setup or the current pin position at the course hasn't been reflected as the current one here.

Guess I better start writing those pin placements and distances down. I don't think any of the courses I play have them listed on this site...
That would help.. plus you'd never have to manually enter the pars and distances in the scorecard again :)
As far as I can tell, the score tracking is good to go. I've made some adjustments, fixed a few things and everything looks to be up and running with no show-stoppers to be found.
So feel free to start recording your rounds and if you notice anything funny let me know.
Enjoy!
I added Average Score and # of Rounds to the course profiles and moved the current course rating up to the top of the list rather than being towards the bottom as it was. Any thoughts as far as the placement of the course rating? It seemed to make more sense than having it at the bottom (at least to me) but if you guys like it lower down I can move it back.

I like having the course rating right at the top. That's the key thing I look for, so it's very visible and easy to see. It was a little hard to find before.
IMO, you don't need the Avg score. I think this is meaningless because you know nothing about the skill level of the people who recorded the scores. You have to know if those scores are by Pros, beginners, or what. By themselves scores really tell you nothing. Now SSA would be very nice to have (but that's also quite problematic to get).
I just added an option to the score tracking so you can now just enter some basic totals rather than having to enter a score for each hole. When entering a score, just click the "Quick" tab and you'll be able to enter your score/putts/penalty shots without going hole by hole.
Obviously this will effect your stats as far as pars/birdies/etc. so if tracking that is important to you then you won't want to use the quick feature.
The par/distance is still pulled from the course's hole info so those totals can't be manually entered since I want the hole distances to actually add up to the total distance.
If you notice any issues with the new Quick entry or just the scorebook in general feel free to post something here or send an email my way.
I added the ability to record birdies, pars, bogies, etc. to a "Quick" round by request. To add those details, the total of your pars, etc. must equal the total number of holes you played.
So if you got 5 pars and 1 birdie but you only played 5 holes, the site won't let you record your shot details as you entered stats for more holes than you played.

Fantastic. But unless I am losing my mind, you left out birdies.
Looks like I'm the one losing my mind. I just added birdies in :)

Dude what ever you do don't get rid of this feature. That is the coolest thing. I have instant access to all of my rounds than I can go back and see where and when I mess up and fix those mistakes. Before I would just have scorecards that lay around and get lost. Plus a scorecard doesn't figure averages for putts and scores. It also doesn't tell you how long each hole is or how far you've walked. Anyone who doesn't use this is just lazy. This could really help people improve there games if they use it right. Anyhow I could go on for days about the positive aspects that this sight offers. Keep up the good work man, I sure appreciate it!!!! If your ever in Louisville Ky. let me know!! I'd love to play a round with you.
By the way if you do add anything, add something for your ranking and or what class you play.
Hey Russel,
Don't worry, I don't have any plans to get rid of the score tracking. Only plans to improve it :)
Thanks for the kind words too, I"m really glad you like the site.
Just added best round to everyone's course stats (you might have to do a ctrl-f5 to reload the cached javascript file), added a little number that tells you if your were over/under/even with par below your score on your scorecards and I also re-did how course/player averages are calculated although that isn't quite as noticeable.
As far as the average thing goes.. let's say you played 9 out of 18 holes and scored a 27. For the purposes of the average, the site will estimate what you might have gotten on a complete round of 18 (in this case, it would estimate a 54). That way, if you normally play 18 but have a week where you might only be able to get 3 or 4 rounds of 9 in, those scores won't drag down your average so all of a sudden your average is floating around 30.
The flip side is if you only have incomplete rounds in the scorebook, your average will be a bit high as the site is using what you would have gotten on a complete round at that course.

In the Scorebook the "Course Stats" are obviously for each individual course. So a 9-hole course will show an average for 9 holes.
But on the Overall Stats pane you might consider changing "Average Score per Round" to "Average Score per 18-holes".
That raises the question of how you're factoring 9-hole, 21-hole, etc. courses into the "Overall Average". Are you just taking the average score per hole and multiplying by 18 for each of those rounds?

Yea, that's what I'm doing for the most part now.
I've added the ability to create "custom" rounds for courses if for example, you play at a course that is normally 18 but they set up 9 additional holes for a tournament.
Custom rounds behave the same as normal rounds except they will NOT be averaged into the course average but they will be factored into your overall play average just like any other round.
If there are any questions or find any bugs please let me know.
Another new add.. you know have the ability to mark holes as skipped in case you couldn't play a hole for whatever reason. If you do skip a hole, it's obviously not a complete round so it won't be factored into the main course average or your course average. It will factor into your overall user score average though.
Let me know if you notice any bugs as the score tracker is getting pretty complicated at this point so the possibility of a small bug is a bit greater than usual.

Well I love the score card feature on here but I have a small problem with it. The main course I play can be played as 18 or "if you add 7 holes in the middle" 24. So the score card is set up for 24 holes but recently I've been playing 18 and the last 9 hole distances get screwed so if I want to be 100% accurate I have to manually change the distances all the time...
Also On another course I play On hole 8 you have the choice to play 8a & 9a for 9 holes or 8b & 9b for 18 well the way the score card is set if you play 9 holes you need to change the distances for 8 & 9.
Hopefully you understood what I was saying, I have no idea if there is a way to remedy the problem. I've just decided to not worry about the distance error and move on.

I think this one is an easy fix.
First off I recommend that you go into the Hole Info page for the course and change the labels on the holes so they accurately reflect the 'A'-'F' names for the middle holes.
Then to enter your score when you only play 18: select 24 holes played and check the "Skip" box at the end of the row for holes 'A'-'F'.
That should work.
ERic
I think ERic's suggestion is a good one, the only downside being that those rounds won't count in your course average but it would still count for your overall average score.
It would be really difficult to make a scorecard that could account for all the idiosyncrasies of the various courses that have non-standard layouts. Plus if you did make one that could, I think it might get too complicated for its own good. The one on here does a pretty good job of providing options for dealing with non-standard layouts, especially with the addition of the skip holes feature. So while it's not perfect, I like to think it does a pretty good job :)

Well, that is a different course... I think you just have to use the "Skip Hole" feature here again. Short of listing that as two separate courses (one 9-hole and one 18-hole) I can't think of what'd you'd do other than "Skip Hole". Like Tim said though, unless you play all the holes listed for the course, it doesn't count for your course average.

Way better than "pretty good". Love this site! :D
Just added the ability to filter rounds by date when viewing all your own rounds or all the rounds at a particular course. I kind of crowbarred it in so it's not as nice looking as it could be but it works.
If you noticed anything odd try doing a Ctrl-F5 on the page to see if it fixes the problem. If something is still broken then please let me know.
Oh yea, a note about the little pop-up calendar. If you click between the two arrows it'll jump to today's month/year so you don't have to scroll from 1975 :)
Just made a slight change to the averaging algorithm thanks to ERicJ pointing out an inconsistency. I used to count rounds where you would have played x out of y holes and would just round up the score to what you may have gotten had you completed the round.
Then I introduced skipping holes into the scorecard and since rounds with skipped holes don't count towards the course average or your average on that course, the latter example shouldn't count either since it's basically the same thing (you "skipped" the last 2 holes of a 9 holer for example).
So now those rounds have been removed from the course average and your average at a course. If you normally play all the holes on a course you shouldn't notice a change in any of your numbers. If you had a few where you maybe played 16 out of 18, etc. then you will see a change in those two averages. Your overall average remains unchanged (every round counts).

So usually play 18 out of 24 at my local course how does that work out?
Those rounds of 18 will count towards your Average Score per Round in your Overall Stats. They won't count towards your Average Score in the Course Stats area and they won't count towards the average you see on the Course Info. page.
