I am testing out a chat room since I know some of you guys requested it. Look under "Community" in the forum menu bar. Feel free to test it out and let me know what you think. If you guys are into it I may pay for it to add more options.

How long will the demo chat room be on the site?

timg

Until I decide if I want to keep it around or not.

Tim either now with the test chat room, or with theupgrades, ca the front page of the site have a section like the users online with the users in chat? I know you can go into the community section to see who is chatting but something on the home page of the forums might be nice.

The chat room says I need to install a plug in and my Firefox 3.0.5 couldn't do it so I can't use the chat room right now.

timg

The chat uses Java so if you don't have that installed it probably won't work.

It's working on my side. I would use it if enough people were to join in.

If enough people use it I can put something like that in.

FYI, the chat does have an instant messenger integrated so if you do the float chat and minimize it, people can IM you through the site and it should pop up.

Still can't get into the Chat room. Now all I get is a screen that says

This forum uses AddonChat Chat Software (http://www.addonchat.com/).

To use this chat room, you will need to Download Java (http://www.java.com/). with no way to enter the chat. I have downloaded Java. What am I doing wrong?

timg
02-02-2009, 01:38 PM
No idea.. it sounds like java may not be installed correctly. I always thought most computers came with it pre-installed. Guess not :(

harr0140
02-02-2009, 01:50 PM
Did you install java or was it simply downloaded?

Olorin
02-02-2009, 02:12 PM
Java is installed. I also thought I already had it, but that screen said I needed it. I also use Firefox's NoScript blocker, but it's set to allow all from the Chat room.

works fine for me... no one was in chat but i was able to send "TEST" and it went through

I'm in there now...no one else is. If we want to make this work, we should open the chat in another window while we are looking at other threads...I'll be on for a while...

timg
02-02-2009, 10:42 PM
Choose the float option and it'll pop up in its own window.

Geoffro

Okay you guys, this is really cool. Tim and I are chatting right now, and you can talk on the main board as well as PM individual users in a separate window. Open this thing via the last option under the community tab called "float chat." Leave it open while you're looking at threads...but check it now and then...now we have three on...

Geoffro
02-02-2009, 11:28 PM
Now we have seven on...every time you log in make "float chat" the first thing you do and this will take off!

Is there a way to add a box at the top of the screen that shows who is currently chatting in the room? I know there is a tab that can be clicked under community but I think alot of people forget to check. If there is a visable list maybe more people will remember and check it out.

how come no one is ever in the chat room?

timg
02-16-2009, 02:05 PM
I guess it never really caught on. I was thinking of removing it but it doesn't really hurt anything to leave it. I'm just glad I didn't jump the gun and pay for all the fancy features.

I try to hop in there when I'm on but I'm normally alone. I havn't joined lately but will do so more. the last time I joined I was kicked for inactivity and that was a few days ago.

Maybe it will be helpful if we all know the "schedule" topic chat.

Just some ideas like:

Mondays - from 6PM to 10PM, the topic will be about the discs only.

Wednesdays - 8PM to 12AM, congrats or bug and pick on Tim for anything about DGCR site

Fridays - 2AM-4AM, anything goes!

Saturday - all day, any topics!

In that way, people will know what to say in the chat room on that day.

Don't like it? Then forget it...

Used it a couple of times, but I'm not really on here for a long amount of time before the kids or wife drag me off. The one time I did talk with someone it was pretty cool, but I think most of us chat either thru the pm's or the forums anyway.

I guess I prefer to keep things in the forum where they can be searched for future reference.

Yeah, It would be very cool if Ken C. or Barry S. or Dave D. or any known guest DGers be in the chatroom for three hours for one day to take in questions from all of us or hear out their "wisdom" about DGing or products.

But I do like forums as well as to catch up what I have missed when I was away for long time...:o

wasn't around here for the test chat room, so cant comment on it, but i could set up an IRC channel somewhere and link back to it. There wouldn't be much website integration however.

isnt that why the dg and watercooler threads are seperated?

That may be why it is seperated, but how much bickering happens in disc golf related forums. It might take some pressure off the moderators because thye won't have to shuttle so many threads into the watercooler once they turn south

I think there wil be bickering in the forums (even with chat) because the flame war people want EVERYONE to read their comebacks. I think the flamewar people also like that it is raising their post numbers before it goes into the watercooler.

vbulletins quick search sucks chode. gotta use the advanced search if you want to really find what youre looking for.

Donovan

I feel a chat would be cool to have. I can think of a few times when I am in a private message conversation or going back and forth with one person in a thread that might get off topic. I would not think this feature would be used too often, but there have been a few times that I wished we could do this. An "invite to chat" would have been nice to have in those situations.

As far as going there to talk disc golf everyday...I do not think that would benefit the site. That would take away from storing the good info. However, i don't think it would get used that way that often.

Who said use quick search? ;) I do use it, if I am looking for something with unique words. There is no need to go advanced in this case.

However, I use advanced most of the time. :p

I think it would be pretty cool as well if Tim brought it back. He could put a feature that shows X amount of Disc Golfers in the chat room below the nav bar to draw in more people. Just a thought.
